Great spot to try West Coast BBQ! The service was good had take out but the young lady that took my order was very nice. The place was crowded but my food came out quickly. Nice place to grab BBQ if you are in town visiting. The beef ribs was very tender and the wings were really good. I also had bake beans which were ok. First visit very impressed ! Line at the door opening for lunch it went very quick and smooth staff at the register will explain the menu if it's your first time there and give you a cute piggy sticker. Menu so much to choose from so I went with the Phil's Ticklers 1 beef bone rib comes with 2 onions rings fresh cut fries and coleslaw added side small Mac and side potato salad with one extra beef rib bone to take home that was delicious get your face messy with bbq sauce yummy! They do have a bar and other beverages on the menu. Large dining area self serve soda station and utensils. In the back of that is a large sink for guests to wash hands before or after you meal nice! We just landed in San Diego and decided to have lunch. I heard about this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. It's just a short drive from the airport and it has some good reviews. We got their famous ribs. Both the half and full racks. Also their onion rings, Caesar salad, and a sausage with fries. The ribs are very tender. You don't need a knife to cut them. You can literally pull the bone on the ribs and you will get the meat from the bone. The meat is so soft and juicy. We had the sauce on the side so you can dip the meat whenever you want. The onion rings are also good. The service was excellent. You can ask for extra sauce or dressing with no extra charge. This is our first time dining here and we had a tremendous experience with their food and service. read more

This was my first time at Phil's BBQ and first time in SD with my family. Why can't we have this kinda BBQ in Modesto, CA!? Amazing, top notch! Great flavor the meat very tender and the staff very friendly. Great experience. When I come back to SD after a six hour drive south I'm coming back here. Hands down the BEST BARBEQUE that we have had around the World. Our first time at this location and it did not fail us. Customer Service from the ordering process to our guy "Derrick" was awesome. Derrick ensured we wanted for nothing as we devoured our Que & amazing sides. Despite a huge crowd, the lines moved smoothly & food was served hot & fairly quick. If you happen to by this place ..It's a must stop an get in line , it's worth every minute an I'm not playing! We visited this restaurant for an early dinner. We arrived at 5 p.m. and the line was out the door, which told us it was popular and good! You order upfront and then find a table. They provide a buzzer to tell you when the food is ready. We ordered 2 meals with 1/4 lb of ribs with two sides. I chose potato salad and beans. My mom chose beans and slaw. My niece ordered a broham sandwich (pulled pork), with fries and slaw. There was so much pulled pork on the broham. There were plentiful ribs. Everyone enjoyed the sides. I did not like my beans as they were very sweet. but I traded that for some of my niece's fries and was happy. Also, we ordered a cornbread for the three of us to share. Definitely large enough for sharing and it was tasty. The restaurant was large with plenty of tables inside and outside. By the time we left, the line was wrapped around the building. I was happy we made it to an early dinner. The waiter helping our table was attentive and brought refills and extra napkins and to go containers pretty quickly. read more

I usually don't review a place I have already reviewed, but I recently discovered the awesome happy hour at Phil's, and I'd be remiss to not extol its virtues in a follow up review. (Feel free to read my first review for more about this San Diego institution.) Phil's has one of the best happy hours around, with not just wells, but their signature cocktails at only $5 and some great food specials on menu items like their wings and broham fries. I opted for the latter, which were topped with delicious pulled pork and Phil's insanely good BBQ sauce. Two signature cocktails, the meal-sized Broham fries, tax and tip came to a few pennies under $20. Good luck finding a better deal than that in 2025. read more

Definitely over hyped placed. I give them a 3.5 on food and service. I tried the beef and baby back ribs, and chicken. Meats is good but not amazing or mind blowing. As for the sides, fries were limpy and no seasoning. Cole slaw was fresh but lack of seasoning also. Mac salad taste very basic and baked beans just OK. Onion ring was nice and crispy but no seasoning and battered heavy. Not worth the 1+ hour wait more of 30 min. read more

We come because we enjoy the beer selection at the bar. The food, unfortunately not so much. We ordered a veggie burger and corn bread. The veggie burger was dry and disappointing with bbq sauce poured on top. I know, what should I expect ordering a veggie burger in a rib joint - but if you're going to put something on the menu, make an effort. The corn bread is delicious. Kinda surprised they brought it to out table pre-packaged to go and not heated - the maple butter they bring to the table is also pre-packed to go ???? And would sure taste yummy put onto warm bread. Oh well, given this place way too many visits, time to broaden our horizons. read more

Overall customer service was great, the manager was very nice. He even offered me a sample. I ordered to go but ended up sitting at a small table outside. The music is extremely loud though and it was packed. However, the food was extremely disappointing. The rib was big but was covered in so much fat there was barely any meat and my two onion rings were overcooked so I couldn't eat those and the fries were overcooked and burnt as well. Almost broke a tooth on one. I left still hungry. The manager asked me how everything was before I left, I said it was good I didn't have it in me to complain because of how nice he was. read more

Still my favorite bbq restaurant I have eaten until this day. I haven't been back in years but I'm so glad the crowds have died down. I was feeding a large party of 7 so it took me a while to decide what to eat but when I was ready the worker Jenna K she was so awesome and ready to help. She was nice and patient while I read out my long order. She gave my son stickers which he had a field day with. She read back my order and made sure everything was right and made sure I added any extra sauces when I ordered instead of during pick up so they don't get forgotten. I ordered 1 pork dinner, 3 beef dinners, and onions rings. For my sides I chose veggies, fries, mac, and coleslaw. I also got a buster burger but it was so big I don't know how to eat it or tackle it and I was full so I let the others in my party feast on it. No notes I loved everything couldn't even chose a favorite side because it was all delicious. It was enough food for my large party with just 1 small togo box of leftovers. My friend and I wanted to try a local food joint that was unique to San Diego and Phil's BBQ popped up in our radar. She was from Texas and I was in Texas just last year so we were both curious to see how the BBQ was out here. We came on a weekend around 6:15pm and there was a line out the door and around the corner. It took us ~40 mins to get inside the restaurant and order. She ordered the pulled pork burger and I got the rib and chickless dinner combo ($24.99). After ordering, we realized we had to find our own table which seemed like a nightmare considering how packed and busy it was. Luckily there was a booth that just opened up and we were able to get it. While we were waiting for our buzzer to go off, we did notice that people who couldn't find seating could just ask any of the employees walking around to help them out. Our food took about 20-30 mins to be ready My friend said she enjoyed the pulled pork and barbecue sauce. Compared to Texas, the ribs were small but they had good flavor. The boneless chicken was the breast part which was perfect for me since I like eating leaner meats. Surprisingly it wasn't dry and was seasoned well. Overall, it took us a little more than 2 hours to get in and out. By the time we left at 8:30pm, there was still a long line out the door and around the corner. A standard stop on any of our trips to SD. Been going for an unknown amount of time and it's become almost tradition for us to stop at this Phil's location before we drive home from SDCC. We eat there and also take some Togo orders. Food is good days later Parking is very easy at this location and the place is always clean. Plenty of seating and on thing that always stands out is the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff here. Tip: when you order you can order, I recommend you order with Sauce on the side. They dont necessarily drench the proteins in sauce, but I like to have some control of how much sauce I add. For orders, we always get the three beef rib dinner (my personal bias), and full baby back rib dinner. The dinners include two small sides or one larger side. One of the dinners, we'll add the link & drink. Both ribs are tenders, pretty much come off the bone. Side recommendations, after years of coming here, my two favorite sides are easily the macaroni salad and Cole slaw. Those are pretty much our go to sides Get the colossal onions rings. While portions of these gotten smaller over the years, they're still delicious Other portions are fair for the prices in my opinion. Staff is generous if you ever need more bbq sauce or ranch, feel free to ask! This place will always be part of SD trips! read more

I feel like this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I liked it -I just didn't love it. Honestly, everything except the BBQ ribs felt pretty below average to me. The ribs were good, but not amazing or "best I've ever had" like I expected based on all the reviews and hype. Some pieces were dramatically smaller than others too. I've visited other Phil's BBQ locations, this one on Sports Arena is my first time and I had no idea it was this close to one of my work locations! This restaurant is a large facility and was pretty busy. The food was awesome and very filling, of course! Always need a few to-go boxes because the food portions are huge! The dining areas include indoor and patio dining and there was another dining location I think was on the street side and you can get seated and have your orders taken in this area, but didn't take a peek to say much about what it looks like. We opted to stand in line and place our order at the front desk. We sat ourselves in the booths against the window and close to the fountain drinks. As busy as it was on a workday during lunch, our food arrived quickly and the staff came by to check in on us regularly. The parking lot serviced all the businesses within the complex and seemed to have many available parking even on a busy day. read more

It can be pretty busy and there is a line during their dinner rush but they have heaters outside so you won't be cold. The line moves pretty fast and are asked to order before sitting down. The staff is extremely friendly and they are very attentive. All employees we interacted with from waiting in line, ordering and at the table were very friendly and attentive. The employee I believe named Allen was super friendly as soon as I sat down he asked if we needed anything and brought over utensils for us. The food itself was very delicious and flavorful. I had a quarter of ribs with a baked potato. I added bacon and cheese for an extra fee. The sauce on the ribs was good and cooked perfectly. I definitely recommend it. Their beer of the month was the Hazy IPA and was great. There is indoor and outdoor seating which have heaters as well. It was very lively and busy inside and outside. read more

This was one of my brother-in-law's favorite spots, so we had to check it out--and wow!! The food was amazing. We'd come back to San Diego just for this place. My wife and son had a great time. It meant a lot to us to finally try Phil's... it definitely did not disappoint. Everything we tried was consistently amazing. My ribs were falling off the bone!! The sides were fantastic as well. I tried the potato salad, fries and macaroni salad.... all were seasoned and prepared perfectly. When we had told the gentleman taking our order that it was our first time; he gave us stickers and told us how they operate there! If you're worried about getting messy, they provide you with wipes and have a dedicated sink by the restroom to cleanup. The workers were constantly cleaning tables, and keeping the area clean. It makes sense why Phil's BBQ is so popular in San Diego! You have to check out Phil's BBQ when you're in San Diego!!! Highly recommend. read more

We went to Phil's BBQ today at the Sports Arena location, and honestly, it was an amazing experience from start to finish. I ordered the beefy ribs with a double side of mac, and my brother got a full rack of baby back ribs with fries, coleslaw, and two drinks. Let me tell you--this place does not miss. We've been coming here for a couple of years now, and every single time the food is consistently top quality. This time we went on a Monday, and it was perfect--not too crowded, no long wait, and we were able to grab a booth right away. The service was excellent. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and on point. Our food came out fast, hot, and fresh, which made the whole experience even better. The beefy ribs were absolutely incredible--tender, juicy, and literally falling off the bone. Every bite was packed with flavor. The mac was creamy, rich, and the perfect side to go with the ribs. It really tied the whole meal together. My brother's full rack of baby back ribs looked just as good, and he couldn't stop talking about how flavorful and perfectly cooked they were. He finished the whole thing and was beyond satisfied. Overall, Phil's BBQ continues to deliver top-tier food, great service, and a great atmosphere. What I ordered - We both got the baby back rib tickler which came with 3 bones. We both added a beef rib for $9.99 and rib-less for $6.49. We also added a sausage link that came with a drink for $4.99. - Sides: The Tickler came with coleslaw so we added a side of Mac salad. - Drink: Self serve fountain soda. How it all tasted: - Baby back ribs: these were good this time. Fall off the bone and soft. - Beef ribs: We loved these last time we came. However, this time was a bit dryer and close to being burnt. We didn't enjoy it as much this time around. - Rib-less: we wanted this as a to-go order so we only tried one piece each. It was on the dryer side. We definitely prefer the baby back ribs over the rib-less. - Sausage: Typical Sausage. It's on the sweeter side. Little things to note: - You have to line up to order before grabbing a seat. You can also see a live feed of the line on their website. - Happy hour: they have a happy hour at their bar that has great deals! - Parking is pretty easy. The food was good this time around, but just not as mind-blowing as the first I'd had it. Maybe off day? I got the chicken & ribs dinner w/ a baked potato. They were a bit light w/ the toppings esp given the extra $2 for the bacon...Thought the chicken tasted a bit old, as well. It's mostly self-service, but everyone serving was still very nice and helpful. Make sure to include a tip, please y'all. This is the spot to visit when in SD for some bbq ribs. I came here for lunch and got the full rib dinner to share. The ribs is good and I love the bbq sauce that goes with it. You can choose from different sides they offer, I got fries and mac salad. The service is quick and the food came out pretty fast. This is a nice spot for lunch or dinner if you are around the area. read more

Meet the Business Owner: Phil P.

Since opening its doors in San Diego in 1998, Phil's BBQ has served over one million pounds (and counting!) of BBQ sauce. In 2007, after the smoke cleared from the original Phil's BBQ location in Mission Hills, the restaurant relocated to a much larger space in Point Loma. Even with a change of location, the Phil's experience and the menu remain the same: long lines of anticipation, an energetic, friendly atmosphere, fantastic food, huge portions, and many, many, paper towels. Phil doesn't come from a long line of BBQ connoisseurs. Instead, he created from scratch a top-secret recipe for BBQ rubs and sauce while taking his dad's advice to only cook what he knows best and treat employees like family. Phil has been a pioneer of fast, casual dining since the opening of the first restaurant, giving San Diegans what they want - great BBQ. I was there today and there's a line fir in dining & a line fir to-go orders. While waiting to dine in, I saw people walk up and confirm the phone order & the staff brought it to the counter for them. Seemed very efficient.
