Amazing tacos in the San Diego area! This was our first stop while visiting SD and it was a great start to the trip. First of all, the place is quite small but worth the wait if you have the time. It's intimate but the tacos come out relatively fast. They all come with 2 tacos and my husband and I ordered 2 fish and 1 shrimp plate and it was plenty. The al pastor margarita was also good and sweet. The fish tacos are all filled to the top with meat and slaw, all of which are perfectly seasoned. And the service was super friendly. Very cute spot! My husband started chatting with a busboy who turned out to be the owner/chef. Such a nice guy. A true artist. My husband asked him why they don't do takeout and he said it would compromise the quality. Came here a few minutes before opening and there was still a line! Parking can be tricky because you only have the option for street parking. Once we were seated though, our orders were taken fairly quickly considering there was only one person working! We ordered everything on the menu basically, except dessert. The smoked fish was not available that day, but we got to try all the tacos, and we got seconds on the coconut shrimp. The fish n chips was brilliantly reinterpreted with the potato salad, the coconut shrimp was delightfully crispy and coconutty, and the swordfish was also good due to the yummy slaw. I had to ask twice for hot sauce though because it didn't have the heat I needed, but with it, it was superb! Would come back - though earlier next time to beat the line. One wish: (I wish they'd hire more people.) She was extremely professional despite the fact that she was the waitress seating people, taking orders, bartending, clearing dishes and tables, and being the cashier too! I wanted to try their smoked fish dip but knew I wouldn't be able to finish it on my own but I was told they don't have anything to give you leftovers in. I ordered the Original Baja fish tacos and the fish and chips. The tacos were $12 for just two small tacos, which I felt was overpriced. What really surprised me was that the "fish and chips" came in taco form, which wasn't what I expected at all. I also ordered a drink, but they didn't have straws, salsa, or any condiments available, which made the meal even less enjoyable. Each one was excellent in its own way. The swordfish taco in particular stood out, but honestly all three were fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. We were served by a friendly young waiter whose name I unfortunately didn't catch. He mentioned he grew up in the neighborhood and was genuinely warm, attentive, and outgoing. Service like that always makes the experience feel more personal. For drinks, I had the Pepino Santo, which I highly recommend. It was refreshing and perfectly balanced. My partner tried the Smokey Mango and enjoyed that one just as much. If you're used to grabbing tacos across the border in Tijuana, the prices here might cause a little sticker shock at first. But for San Diego, and especially for tacos of this quality, the pricing really isn't surprising. I loved that their tais came lots of cabbage in too that helped balance out the fried foods. I actually really liked how small the store was because you got to look out into the street and really enjoy the view, making it a really charming place to have a quick lunch! It was one of the top food places I was able to fit into my few days in SD, and their tacos were so fresh and this was one of the very few places that lived up to the hype. I visited this location on a Friday night. Parking was a bit of a struggle, but fortunately there was no wait. Our group of 5 was able to fit at one of tall bar seats, but not sure if a larger party could fit. We were on a taco crawl situation so serving size wasn't an issue, but I can see this as more of a lunch or getting like half the menu to share situation. The menu is quite small, but mostly pairs of tacos that you cannot mix and match. The trick is to trade with people but honestly I did not want to share. I got the De Coco (coconut battered shrimp) tacos. We also wanted the smoked fish dip but they were sadly sold out already. For fried seafood tacos, these did not feel heavy or greasy at all, very well fried. For all the coconut haters out there, you definitely taste some coconut but it's not very coconut heavy like thai food. You can really taste the quality of the fish-simple, delicious, and done right. Right when they opened a party of 14 came in and took over the restaurant, it's not built for that capacity. The food here is nice. It differs tremendously from mitchs in Point Loma or bluewater. Everything is freshly prepared though per day. The Cole slaw and the fish are so up there in quality. My sword fish was up there in quality. The fried fish taco was sooo spicy I had to give mine to my wife. It is very good. Authentic up there recipes and quality. Dunno, just something was missing for me. I was so so so freakin excited to try Fish Guts but left utterly disappointed. I showed up a few minutes after 12 and the place was almost full but I got a good seat at the counter. I asked the waitress if they had the fish sandwich back but she didn't have an answer and said it's basically still off the menu. But later I spoke with SD locals who said the waitress was wrong and the sandwich is there. So I don't know who to believe. I started with the smoked fish dip. This was fine. You can't even tell it has fish in it. Which might be fine for someone who doesn't like fish, but when you're at a fish restaurant ordering a fish dish, you want to taste the fish. This just tasted like a serrano dip because the heat from the serranos overpowered everything else. Now for the baja fish tacos. More like coleslaw tacos because there was so much spicy coleslaw on these tacos you wouldn't even know that you're eating a fish taco. The tortillas are fantastic. Actually, the tortillas are perfect. They're soft, warm, chewy, and flavorful. But the rest is a mess. The fish itself is flaky and soft but the batter was soggy and mush. And the size of the fish is like a chicken nugget compared to the tortilla. I'm not expecting a whole filet on here since these are "Street tacos" but c'mon. two bites and the fish was gone, then you're just eating tortilla and coleslaw. There is so much coleslaw that you don't taste anything else either. After talking to others, everyone said the baja tacos are not the thing to order but rather you should order the sandwich (if / when they ever bring it back) and the swordfish tacos.
