"Adobada looks very disappointing" People on TikTok have been really hyping this spot up lately, so I went in expecting it to be one of those "best in San Diego" type places, but honestly that's exactly why you can't always trust food influencers who base everything off one bite and a good angle. First thing I noticed was the parking situation is rough there's basically none, and you can't even risk street parking because it's marked red, so right away it already starts off inconvenient. When we got there, the tables weren't clean, which kind of kills the vibe before you even order, but I will say the carne asada mulita actually surprised me in a good way, it was solid, flavorful, and probably the best thing we tried. They also have a bigger version called the keka that I didn't get, but I could see that being more filling if the mulita is any indication. Customer service was decent, nothing special but not bad either, just kind of there doing their job. Overall though, even with a good item on the menu, it's not enough for me to say this place lives up to the hype TikTok is pushing. In my opinion, in San Diego it's still hard to beat Tacos El Gordo, and I've seen people online try to downplay it saying places like Chula Taco are better, and I just don't think that's accurate from a real first-hand experience standpoint. For the most part yes the hype is real especially with the Keka taco. They have me with the Carne Asada Keka, I love it! With the hand made strong corn tortilla & delicious guac that Keka is one of the best Mexican items I've ever tasted, the asada meat is also very good, charcoaled to perfection. The prices here are very affordable, prices are lower than most taco shops & portions are good. The other taco I loved was the Tripa taco & honestly probably the best Tripa I've had in SD, the Pollo asado taco also very good. The other tacos were ok, the Adobada one to me was too seasoned to my liking & Birria under seasoned. One interesting thing here is they don't have Cabeza tacos they have Labio which they said it's the same, no not for me, similar yes but not the same, not a fan, Salsas are good. The customer service is good from the counter, cooks & Drive Thru, yes they have a Drive Thru which is cool. Parking ain't that great tho during peak hours. Over all it's a very good taco shop I will come back to & in my top 3 in SD for sure, it's that Keka that brings me back baby. Chula tacos is a great spot down south for some authentic carne asada. They have an actual mesquite charcoal grill out front where they make the meat, leading to a unique Smokey flavor in the tacos made the authentic way. Home of the Keka is how Chula Tacos markets itself and of course you have to get one! Walking in, I appreciate the clear menu of options and even the description of each taco (Vampiro, Gringa, Keka, Mula, etc) since I sometimes forget what the differences are. Espcially since I have never had a Keka, it was nice to see the description. Service was friendly and quick and they will bring the food to your table. Inside was clean as well. The best thing I had was actually the Al Pastor taco! The meat was very tender and super tasty. They also provide a generous mound of guacamole on top. I've never had a Labio Taco before and that was also very good. Super soft and had even more fatty bits than other meat cuts I've had. We got the Carne Asada Keka and it's essentially a large quesadilla that's folded like a taco filled with cheese, meats, and all the fixings. Because of the tortilla, it reminds me of a flatbread in texture/thickness. While really good, I do think the carne asada meat wasn't as flavorful as the other meats so I'd recommend getting al pastor with it next time. It's obviously really big so it is a fun experience eating it, but I would personally go for a regular taco or mula since the portions and bites are better in those versions. read more

My tripe taco was very spicy but it was flavorful and meats here are well seasoned. I really liked Vampiro here the most because it's crunchy, has melted cheese that I like, has good bite into it. Chula Taco has recently moved to the community of Nestor, in South Bay on Palm Ave. I had two al pastor tacos and one carne asada taco at $3.50 each. Both tacos were very good. I was however a little disappointed that the al pastor meat did not come right off the trompo. It was already prepared and warmed up on the hot griddle. The meat was tasty but did not offer that juicy and smoky flavor right off the spinner from the direct flame. The carne asada was well seasoned and tender. They prepare the meat over wood charcoal right in front of the restaurant, so you get that great flame grilled flavor on the meat. Both tacos came with a generous amount of freshly prepared guacamole, which was very good. The corn tortillas were very good, too. The service at the counter was very nice. When I saw the long line months ago, I thought this taco shop must be doing something right compared to their "competition" down the street of Palm Avenue 92154. Not exactly the price I'm use to when I visit Mexico, but I must say, Chula Tacos have bragging rights to charge that amount compared to other taco shops in town. Of a lot of seats indoor, there are more seats outside. There's one area (empty desk space area) that I see for potential seatings. I was the 7th person in line. As I looked around, every seat inside was taken. Luckily, I was able to find a seat right after I paid at the register. The place is organized, clean and lively. Chula Taco is a hidden roadside treasure right off the interstate. The setup is more than just a taco stand -- think "food truck on steroids" with a spacious tent for plenty of seating. It's not mobile, but you can tell they could pack it up and move if they needed to. Parking is the only real challenge. Being on a corner next to a residential area means spots are tight, and you may have to park down the street in the neighborhood. Luckily, they offer a shuttle to pick you up and take you back to your car, which is a nice touch. If you're lucky, you can grab a spot nearby -- as long as the cones aren't blocking it. I appreciated that they have three porta potties along with a handwashing sink and soap -- a thoughtful detail you don't always see at roadside setups. The staff was incredibly friendly, patient while I browsed the menu, and very helpful in explaining the ingredients and flavors. This was my first visit, and I was impressed. I ordered the carne asada taco, garnished with cilantro, onions, salsa (not overly spicy), and phenomenal guacamole. I also tried the carne asada mula taco -- imagine a cheesy corn tortilla sandwich stuffed with juicy meat, salsa, onions, and cilantro. The smoky flavor of the meat, as if it had been cooked over wood or coals, really made the tacos stand out. Overall, this place has serious potential. Came here and got lucky with parking right in front of the store on a Sunday at 8pm; otherwise there is someone in a golf cart shuttling people to and from the restaurant which would make what would normally a stressful situation fun! We have been searching for some good tacos in the area. We found this place since it was recommended and suggested by Instagram and tik tok. We had the el pollo tacos, carne, and some of the pork ones. They were delicious and not salty. I did feel that it lacked a little seasoning, but it was still ok. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 5pm-11pm, Friday and Saturday until 12 midnight. 4 types of meats on the menu, Carne Asada, Al Pastor Labio (beef head/cheeks) and Tripa (tripe). Carne Asada had the classic grilled smoke taste to it. Unfortunately the Al Pastor lacked that "wow" factor in regard to the marinade, and was not grilled enough to give you the "char" profile. Tried a mixed carne asada/"soft, not fully crispy" tripas Keka, both meats were cooked amazingly tasty (when driving away we realized the meat is actually grilled outside on actual charcoal grills). There was a small hiccup where my Keka got ordered with everything in it instead of only guacamole since they had to delete and re-enter it and the only guac was forgotten as I changed my meats selection but they took care of fixing it very promptly. Personally I was disappointed in the amount of guacamole they put. They wrap the tacos first and then add it. So about only 40-50% of the taco has guacamole. Sauces also didn't sit well. The meat lacked flavor unfortunately but the salsa we're good and presantation was good with the side of cucumber and radish and lime .
