I was looking for a new place to try in San Diego. I saw people talking about this new restaurant, so I had to try it. For one it's very small. If you're having mobility issues I wouldn't come here. Seats are limited and they can only seat you once people get up to leave. It's either high top seating which accommodates about 12 at the high top table and then there's low seating that can handle approximately 10 to 12 people at a time, with seating for 2 on the front side and a total of 4 at the bar. So it's very small. The tacos were good but I was disappointed because that's all they serve. No sides no frills. They do have a dip they serve with ritz crackers. I thought the prices were high for what you get, and it took a long time for my tacos to come. They maybe should put up a sign that limits your time at the tables during busy hours. Especially because there was a long line waiting outside and it was actually cold and a little windy out. I had the De Coco, De Espado & fish & chips tacos. My favorite was the De Coco tacos. Delicious tacos that are unlike what you find at your typical taco joint. I've come here twice and had to order 3 sets of 2 tacos to get my fill. You can taste the freshness of the ingredients here and it stands out in memory even a week later.... which is why it's one of the few restaurants where I continually thought about when I'd be back. This is my partner's favorite fish taco restaurant in San Diego, so I knew I had to try it one day! We came here on Saturday around 1PM and had to wait approximately 30-45 minutes before being seated. I'm not sure if this is something they do regularly, but I noticed that they seat people in groups so that everyone in that area finishes around the same time. So, even if you see empty seats, they won't seat you right away... or maybe it was just for that day since they were short staffed. We were seated at the bar stool area, where we had to share the table with eight other people. I honestly didn't mind, but having that table be a maximum of eight people instead of ten would have been better since it was quite cramped, awkward, and easy to overhear conversations. The stools were also a bit short especially for someone with my height ): Now, let's talk about the food. One important note when ordering is that you can't modify anything, so what you see on the menu is what you will get. We ended up ordering everything: Smoked Fish Dip, Estilo Baja, De Espada, De Coco, Fish & Chips, and De Hongos. Each taco plate costs $12 and comes with two tacos per plate. Our appetizer, the Smoked Fish Dip, came out first. Let's just say it was the best fish dip I've ever had. The fish tasted incredibly fresh, and the pico de gallo and lime really enhanced the flavor. There was a small amount of mayo included and it wasn't too overwhelming to the point where it masked the freshness of the fish. This dish was honestly a MUST-HAVE. As for the tacos, my ranking from favorite to least favorite is: De Espada, De Hongos, De Coco, Estilo Baja, and Fish & Chips. De Espada was grilled and very juicy, flavorful, and fresh. De Hongos was unique - the mushrooms absorbed a ton of flavor and were cooked to perfection. De Coco and Estilo Baja were okay for me; the main difference between the two were the seafood - fish versus shrimp. The flavors and toppings were almost identical, and I didn't love how the aioli overpowered the seafood's freshness. Lastly, the Fish & Chips was my least favorite. The combination of potatoes and mayo on top of the fried fish was overwhelming and heavy for me. I wish they added some vegetables or something more refreshing to balance it out. Overall, I can tell this place aims to be unique, and while some dishes were definite standouts, there were also some that didn't quite work for me. I do appreciate that you can taste the freshness of the fish (when the sauce isn't too overpowering) and the homemade tortillas. The wait wasn't too bad, considering how there were only two staffs. The staff was amazing - knowledgeable, attentive, and hardworking. The place is small, but they made it work somehow. No takeout available. Free street parking. read more

The first time I drove from LA to Fish Guts, they had sold out of everything so I figured it was going to be good and it was. This time I came much earlier (2:30pm) - but they had still sold out of the smoked fish dip! What you need to know: Parking: There really is no designated place to park. We parked in a dirt lot next to the restaurant, and a very irritated tenant approached us and asked if it was our car parked in his spot. We felt bad, but there were no signs that we saw that said tenant parking only. The Fish Guts staff told us to move our car a few spaces down in that same dirt lot because another restaurant closed down and they were using their spaces temporarily. They need to fix this asap. Facility: The restaurant is super small. Maybe 40 seats max. The good thing is they will seat you, but you will have to wait in a line outside of the restaurant (thank God for California's decent weather). My aunt had just had knee surgery and the waitress happily brought her another stool to prop her foot upon. The facility was clean and the outside bar style seating was actually better than I expected. There is an exterior bathroom that you must get a key for. Service: Excellent. From the small staff warmly greeting us at the door to the speed and quality of service, we had no complaints. Our waitress was super nice! (I think there was only 1 or 2 waitress). Food: So the menu is very basic. They let you know there are no modifications. Since I have a shellfish allergy, there were a couple of cross contamination items I was concerned about but I was assured they would be separated. I wish they had chips and salsa or something else because we weren't full when we left. Estilo Baja: B+. Excellent presentation. The corn tortillas were fresh and tasty. De Espada: B+. The only critique here was maybe a bit more seasoning should have been added to the fish (maybe salt). Other than that it was delicious. Fish & Chips Taco: B+. Same as above; taco was delicious but just needed to be seasoned (maybe a bit of salt). Drinks were all tasty. We had the Smoky Mango margarita and the Pepino Santo. Both delicious. What an awesome little spot. Great vibes and even better food. The Baja taco was amazing. The fish was crispy and the slaw was refreshing and spicy. The fish and chips taco had a nice little potato slaw topping the crispy fish. The coco shrimp taco was great as the shrimp was breaded perfectly and the flavor was great. The slaw used is the same as I. The Baja. What's great is the tortilla is freshly made and complements the tacos well. The place is extremely clean as well as the restroom. Service is great as our waitress was checking in on us and served us promptly. If you're in the area, stop by and at least try a taco. You'll end up ordering more. Came to Fish Guts a few weeks ago as I was craving some shrimp tacos. This place has high reviews on Yelp and I could see why. The menu is very simple which I liked, I ordered the Shrimp Tacos & Tuna Dip Appetizer that came with Ritz Crackers. Surprisingly the Tuna dip was fire, haven't tried a combination like that before. I've seen this place many times, especially while seeing a show at the Corazon de Barrio across the street. I was always intrigued by what kind of food they had here, so I finally got to try it a couple weeks ago after doing a ceramics class nearby with a friend. This place has many variations on seafood tacos with different toppings and themes. Such a simple, yet cool concept! Their menu is about $12 for one portion of 2 tacos, but each one is pretty hearty. I thought I'd need about 3 as that's is my average consumption of fish tacos in one sitting, but honestly 2 was more than enough. We got three types - their estilo baja (with mexican coleslaw which is spicy!), de espada, and fish & chips. These were the only tacos available to us, as they ran out of their De Coco one which I heard is probably one of their most popular, and their vegan one. I also got their hibiscus tea, which was super refreshing. Each taco was unique in its own way, and was perfect for sharing between the two of us. It's a small place, so I can imagine you'd have to wait a while if it gets packed. There's indoor and outdoor seating with a table that runs along the establishment. Perfect for people watching! I'll start with the positive, we found this place through a YouTube video. We came in with the mindset of wanting to try as many items as we could. Some items were sold out. Everything was definitely different but tasted great. One of the waitresses was definitely friendly and attentive, she tried to make up for the lack of service from our actual waitress. The wait is definitely absurd and the hostess lacks communication. Every time she was asked about the wait times it was different even though she was asked minutes apart. The seating stools were beyond uncomfortable. Like I mentioned earlier we were planning on ordering more items, but we first had planned to order a few items and based on the taste we would order more or repeat items. Our waitress told us we needed to order everything we wanted at once because once she placed the order she wouldn't come back to take any additional orders and this comment was for drinks as well. Never in my life have I been told I can't order more items. They need to add a time limit there were people there when we first walked up to the line and still there once we left. Really good tacos were had here at Fish Guts! The only complaint -I wouldn't even categorize it as a complaint, more like a suggestion- would be to add more menu items so there is more variety. Tacos are small for only getting 2 for $12. Either drop it down to $9ish, or add a 3rd taco or make the pieces of fish bigger. Alright so I've driven by this place multiple times and there is ALWAYS a line. So today my daughter and I got there before they opened which was at Noon. We got in line 5 minutes before opening and we were #7&8 in line. The hostess/waitress was very nice and explained the menu since it was our first time. We ordered the Jarritos, and their Hibiscus Sweet Tea . The Smoked Fish Dip was FIRE it came with some spice. It was SUPER fresh and paired with the Ritz crackers was PERFECTION! Now I ordered the Estilo Baja. It was OUTSTANDING. That chipotle aioli was WONDER. It definitely packs some heat. My daughter ordered the Fish and Chips. Their version is a little different than most cause it was like a potato salad. Definitely different, but FRESH and tasty. Overall 10/10 would definitely return when they open so I don't have to wait in line long. They do not take to go orders so the only way to enjoy this freshness is to wait in line. When I arrived, there was a line outside equal to the amount of people inside the very small restaurant and patio. The orders that were walked past us to the diners looked good enough to stay. I ordered the estilo baja and the pepino santo margarita. The food and margarita were an absolute perfect combination . An order comes with two tacos, although I wished I could have mixed and matched, I was not at all disappointed. Fresh corn tortilla, perfectly fried fish that was sweet and perfectly cooked with a slightly spicy and sweet slaw. Was excited to try this place. A bit of a trek from gaslamp as I was staying there for a conference. Got there a few minutes after 12 and it was already packed. Luckily there were some counter seats available. Vibes were nice- casual, friendly. Tacos some in pairs for about $10. We tried the chipotle fried shrimp, the Baja fish, and the mushroom medley. Tacos were small, expected given street taco style. Flavors were good. However, the only downside was that we waited about 30min after placing order which seems a little long of a wait for a casual taco place. Another five star visit to Fish Guts! My husband and I were in town for Labor Day weekend, so naturally our first stop was Fish Guts! We came mid-afternoon on a Saturday and only waited about 20 min to be seated. We knew exactly what we wanted. If you saw my previous review, we were obsessed with the smoked fish dip. We had to start with that! It was so yummy. We ordered the exact same food we had last time because it was so good. They were already out of a few things, but we were happy it wasn't what we wanted lol. I'd love to come as soon as they open next time to try more tacos! Back in June, I was able to take a trip down to Mexico City where I tried the world only taco stall with a Michelin Star, Taqueria El Califa de Leon. I wasn't so impressed with the tacos themselves but what made the biggest impression on me were the tortillas. At that point in my life, I had never had a better tortilla than that. Today, however, I think I have found another tortilla and it was almost identical to Califa de Leon. We tried their Baja, and their swordfish. Both were delicious, which made me wonder...if Michelin is handing out a star to a place that is subpar but had outstanding tortillas, wouldn't it make sense to award a place with a star that has BOTH excellent tacos AND outstanding tortillas? Fish Guts is popular and for good reason. Everything is fresh and delicious. So count on about an hour to get your food from where you first queue up in line. And there is always a line. It's a small little place and they try and pack as many people as the city of San Diego will allow, but it's comfortable enough. The wait was only around 10 minutes and likely only because there was one front of house woman working the joint - she was INCREDIBLE and I wish I had gotten her name! She was taking orders, bussing tables, making drinks, all while SO friendly and kind, I was amazed watching this pro in action. We ordered the smoked fish dip and so many tacos - estilo baja, de espada, de coco, de camarón, de hongos. All of them were delicious, we were split amongst what we liked the most but surprisingly the smoked fish dip was a hit LOL we had just had a terrible one recently so this really made a big difference in our opinion of fish dips.
