Yes the hype is worth it. We came here and was 2nd in line 10 minutes before open (noon) on Wednesday. At open, there was already a small line. They open Wed-Sun (closed Mon/Tues). Once open, you are instructed to pick a seat and the server will come by with menus/provide table service (she remembered our place in line). Recommend: Mushroom tacos (De Hongos) Beer battered local white fish tacos (Estilo Baja) Blackened local swordfish tacos (De Espada) Downsides: Parking can be difficult (there is no dedicated lot but you might have luck parking on street by the residential neighborhood). This is our new favorite spot! The flavors are like nothing you've ever had before. The tortillas are hand made. The seafood is so fresh. The fish & chips taco was incredible, my favorite. We came on a Wed afternoon around 5 and it wasn't too busy but was pretty packed by 6. Pretty small space with some indoor seating otherwise only outdoor bar seating facing the street. Unfortunately they were out of the al pastor and the de hongos when we went. We tried the estilo Baja (white fish), de coco (shrimp) and the de espada (swordfish). I probably should have read closer but the toppings for the shrimp and white fish were exactly the same so I didn't get the variety I was hoping for. That being said the Mexican coleslaw on top of those tacos was amazinggg. I could just eat that and be happy. A little bit of heat too. The corn tortilla was soft and flavorful. The fish and shrimp had good flavor. Loved the crunch that the coconut added to the shrimp without adding an overwhelming coconut flavor. My friend thought that the swordfish would be more spicy with jalapeno slaw and spicy aioli but she said the Mexican coleslaw was actually spicier. As others have mentioned, service is kind of slow. This place is worth every good feedback that we have heard so far and that has convinced us to finally come in. We're so happy to be living a mere 5-minute drive away from it as we will be returning! Ambience: Their cozy corner location in Barrio Logan is perfect for a casual date night. We loved dining al fresco and overlooking the street. I came here after seeing a blogger post on Instagram that this was one of the top best fish tacos in San Diego. I was prepared to wait in line, but wasn't expecting the inefficiencies with this. It almost seemed like when they open at 12pm, an entire wave of people get seated. Then you wait for that entire group to be done for seating to open up, and then the next wave of people go in. This wait time took about 45 minutes and I got there 30 minutes after they opened on a Saturday. All of the seating was either bar top or a shared community table which you sat super close together. First time visiting their storefront location and ordered the swordfish tacos and they were yummy. Only knock I have is they aren't flexible with mixing and matching their tacos. They come in orders of 2 and you have to get 2 of the same. Sucks because I didn't want to order 4 tacos just to try 2 different ones. The waitress seemed pretty firm about it and I don't know why. Both were so delicious that we ordered more of both afterwards! The coconut flavor in the shrimp really added to the taco and I liked the spicy slaw on top. I usually don't even like swordfish since it is a tougher denser fish, but the fish in the taco was nice. The ambiance was casual and I liked sitting outside facing the street. The staff was helpful when we asked for recommendations. My only complaints were the prices and portion sizes, though for the quality it was reasonable. The tacos were small and pricey. i was really excited to try this place and i came with a friend on a saturday afternoon around 3pm and it was a bit busy when we initially came but at some point we ended up being the only people in the entire restaurant and ironically that's when the service here was the slowest. They have both indoor & outdoor seating but I gotta be honest we went on a cold day and the indoor seating doesn't really make much of a difference in staying warm due to the big open windows they have so bring an extra jacket or layer in case you come on a cold day. They were sold out of the al pastor salmon tacos when we went so I would try to come earlier to try those out. We ended up trying the smoked fish dip, de coco, & de espada tacos. The fish dip was a bit toooo smoky for my liking so maybe if you enjoy REALLY smoky things it could be something you end up liking. I wish there was an option to serve the fish dip with something besides ritz crackers. The de coco was a giant juicy shrimp coated in coconut shreds which tasted veryyy coconutty (which I personally enjoy) and the cabbage slaw on top had a nice chipotle flavor and was very fresh. If you're not into coconut, DO NOT order this tacos bcuz it is EXTREMELY coconutty. The espada was a swordfish taco with a jalapeño slaw and honestly I think this is the best seafood taco I've ever had. The fish was juicy, the slaw was spicy but not too spicy, and the slaw was refreshing & crunchy. Idk if the server was having a bad day or what but me and my friend noticed that the server lowkey had an unwelcoming attitude in general the whole time and it was really off putting. Thankfully there was only two people ahead of me in line; at the time I did wait about 10 minutes or so until it was my time to order. Not bad at all. Now this may be subject to change but they only have one item on then lunch menu which is their fish sandwhich. Personally, fish sandwhiches aren't my first choice when eating seafood but ya girl was STARVING and I'm not that picky soI ordered it along with a Jaritos drink. I waited a good probably 15 minutes until my order was completed and served to me. I ordered 2 fish sandwhiches because I drove all the way from Carmel Mtn. Ranch area in north SD to try this spot. The fish sandwhich was beautifully constructed with a nice brioche looking bun all glazed up like I like it! The fish filet was THICCCC (thick) like me, HA. jk. Sorry. AND the tartar sauce or whatever sauce it was complimented everything perfectly. I ate it up in like 8 minutes. It was worth the 25 minute drive to Barrio Logan for me. The waitress was super friendly and was working dilligently as well as the rest of the staff in the back! I also met the owner and chef Pablo Becker Sandoval! I will add my photo with him in this review. We spoke about other upcoming projects he is working on and the restaurant Fish Guts itself. Thanks Chef for chatting with me + photo op even if you were extremely busy! I'll be back soon for dinner to try the tacos. Fresh, quality food in a thriving area of SD. What's not to love? I like the coco shrimp one. The estilo bajo was not good. The espada one was decent. fish guts

I'm always on the hunt for new street tacos in San Diego. Barrio Logan is known for great Mexican and Mexican-inspired cuisine, so when Fish Guts popped up I knew I had to try it out. First, there's not a lot of seating here -- there is some bar seating (high top stools), another section of high top seating around the window, and then a row of low stools that all face out toward the street. It would be hard to find seating here for a large group or a table that actually faces other people in your party. Assuming that's ok, these are street tacos! The food was fast, and tasty. The sizes of the tacos are good -- they come two to an order, each taco being about 2-3 big bites. Blackened swordfish with the jalapeño slaw was my favorite. Then the Baja. I also really liked the vegetarian mushroom taco! Glad they had that as an option. Overall, worth adding to your street taco rotation (I assume everyone has a street taco rotation). read more

If I could give Fish Guts 10 stars, I would in a heartbeat. We found this place totally by chance, and I'm honestly shocked I hadn't heard about it sooner. We started with an appetizer (delicious), but the real star of the show was the swordfish tacos. I'm not exaggerating when I say they were the best tacos I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned, insanely fresh, and paired with what I think are house-made corn tortillas. And that swordfish... WOW. However you cooked it, please don't ever stop. I can count on one hand the times I dreamt of food after I ate it, and this is one of them. This place is a gem -- tucked away, humble, and absolutely unforgettable.
