There is always a line at this location and it really doesn't matter what time of day you come. But the line is definitely worth it. I love their ribs and their prices are decent for the amount of food you get. We always order the full rack of ribs with 2 sides because if you only do the full rack of ribs it's only $1 less. I enjoy their cole slaw and fries as my sides. The bbq sauce is also a hit. I just wish they had a location closer to the OC so must visit when you are nearby. read more

Walk in, get in line, look at the menus on the wall, head to the register to order and pay, you're given you a buzzer, and then find a table. Cutlery, plates, napkins, etc are self service. We ordered beefy rib family meal ($125.99), baby back rib ticker ($13.99), a side of tri-tip ($8.99), and a fountain drink ($3.49). Extremely generous portions and very reasonably priced! We had 2 boxes of leftovers, with an entire tray of cornbread. I would NOT recommend the tri tip! And the sweet baked beans were actually too sweet. Everything else was delicious! This is the hidden gem of San Diego and universally known by all San Diego students. I used to love this place but I have been to many bbq joints that I cannot say this place was worth it anymore. In terms of taste the meats are, by default, drenched in their signature sauce which is now overwhelming for my adult self. The Mac and coleslaw sides were seasoned and done well. One thing that shocked me a bit was the price of how many items has changed. Anyway, back to the meats. The beef rib, my favorite back then, was on the drier side; luckily the waitress came by and was nice enough to replace the rib for us, the new ones did not fair significantly better (just a small section in the middle of the rib was not dry). I felt the baby back ribs were better but too much sauce by default (I should've asked for sauce on the side), the chicken was surprisingly the better meat here in terms of texture and balance. The tritip was just sitting in the signature sauce, a bit salty for us. Back then I would always get fries to get full but adult me shouldn't go with empty calories that often. I had the bbq chicken and a link. The link was really good, and the chicken was pretty good as well. Happy with my choices. My wife had pork riblets and a side of tri-tip. The riblets were decent, and the tri-tip was...um...not good. We both love tri-tip, but it came as a bowl dried out, over-spiced pieces...which went home with us as leftovers, and, for the first time in my life, I threw away bbq meat leftovers. Sigh. It's a hot day & I felt like getting a turkey burger. I ordered it at the bar & it took about 25 minutes. A large table next to us was wildin' out & screaming, and I could've done without that at 6:30 on a Thursday. Then the food arrived , and the turkey burger was missing the onion ring & bbq sauce.The food runner went back & got the missing items for me, but this is the second time they've forgotten my onion ring. I mean the turkey burger probably is not the most popular thing on the menu, but it is on the menu, and it's not complicated. Anyway, once everything arrived, it was good. I'm going to be honest and say the refillable HiC fruit punch was my enjoyable moment. Coke products and fountain drinks will always be a winner. My theory? If I were sitting in Phil's backyard while he was personally tending the grill, I have a feeling that barbecue would be mouth-smacking. When you arrive, there are two lines, one for take out and one for eating in. You're unable to get a table until after you order and staff may sometimes ask people who are staking a seat to wait until their party has ordered. I'm writing this review mostly for the amazing service. Obviously the food at Phil's is good- there are so many reviews to tell you that. But this past time I went I noticed how good the service was. I came on a Saturday night around dinner time with a party of 5. The line to order took about 40 minutes, however while in line someone asked us how many were in our party and reserved a table for us so once we ordered we were able to sit right away. It was definitely busy so it was nice that we didn't have to wait for a seat. The girl at the front of the ordering line was super nice and personable. She engaged in conversation with our party and genuinely looked like she enjoyed interacting with everyone. Once we ordered and were seated, another guy came over and brought us utensils, plates, and wet wipes. He asked us if we needed anything and brought us more sauces from the counter. At the end of the meal he even brought a to-go cup for one of my friends who got a drink so he could take some home. I also heard him offer another table nearby a bag of bones so they could take them home to their dog! As for food, my husband and I shared a full rack with fries and Mac salad as our sides. We also got onion rings. The ribs are delicious and tender. We like to get the sauce on the side so it's a little less messy. The ranch dipped sauce is so good for the giant onion rings and I love the batter on the onion rings. The onions are so easy to bite into and stay put inside the batter without being pulled out. How has Phil's BBQ withstood the test of time, even in this economy?! I first tried Phil's years ago during a bachelorette party. It was amazing back then. And whenever I'm in SD, I try to go back. Each time, it's been phenomenal. The quality of food and service has remained consistently fantastic. On this occasion, we ordered a full rack of baby back ribs with a large side of coleslaw, two full meals of beef ribs (3 ribs in each meal) with a large side of beans, and another large side of steamed veggies, and an order of loaded fries with tri tip. For all that delicious food, it was less than $130. That's a LOT of food, and it fed a family of 6 adults and 2 toddlers, with leftovers to spare. You have to order take out in person, and even then the wait was only 10 minutes or so for the food. Came here for the first time on a weekend trip to San Diego and Phil's BBQ will forever now be a go to spot when i'm in the area again. My partner and I shared the full rack of ribs with sauce- and trust me it's enough for 2 hungry people with the 2 sides! The ribs were juicy, tender, soft, melt in your mouth almost kind of vibe. Got there with a short line so we were happy and not cranky from standing for an hour. When we ordered, we had ordered several items, including beans. Finding a seat is typically a task as they are very busy however after a minute or so one of the workers pointed us to a table in the patio . This is because you can tell it wasn't cooked on a grill but seasoned with things to mimic bbq flavors. A salad will be a salad lol. Stay to the left for to-gos. Ordered a full rack and half chicken dinners. Both were mediocre. I thought the ribs were too charred for my liking. It was tender but too sopped with sauce. Hands down on of the best bbq places in San Diego! The beef ribs never miss. The sides were good. Not gonna lie the onion rings were kind of meh for the price you pay. I honestly would expect more both in quality and quantity for that level of pricing. Service was good. Open seating and there's plenty of it. Tried Phil's BBQ and overall had a solid experience. The place has a fun sports bar vibe and is clean, which made it comfortable to dine in. Service was definitely the highlight; our server Keyliegh was amazing, very attentive, and handled everything with great energy. We did get a dish that came out a bit dry, but it was quickly replaced without any hassle, which I really appreciated.
