They are cash only, so be prepared for that. My daughter and I decided to split the large Turkey, Avocado, and Cheese. Each cold sub comes with your choice of White, Wheat, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Cheese, Mayo, Oil & Vinegar & Seasoning. Soooo dirty and gross. The walls have old pictures that are caked in dust and grime. The trash can had a flat lid on it that was soooo dirty and you had to lift it to throw away trash. Sandwiches are bland, plain and expensive. $15.50 for a large with hardly any meat on it. French dip wasn't warm enough to melt the cheese and the au jus had a layer of unmelted fat on top. There are two words that set Phil's apart from basically any sandwich shop west of the tunnels that doesn't have a Jersey Mike's logo on it: "Choice of." That may not seem like an important clause, but in the lackluster world of Oregon sandwiches--especially those containing traditional, marbled, fatty Italian meats--it sets both expectations and tone. I get that Phil's is a college-town sub shop that caters to a high student metabolism. You don't go slinging seven-pound sandwiches and putting faces on the wall of fame or shame if you aren't having at least a little fun with your position near campus. But I've seen places out here with red-white-and-green flags and all the right vowels in their name make similar claims about quality that Phil's makes... but fall flat on their 'Medigan faces trying to please the vanilla palates of the Western metro. Phil's is having none of that. Instead, the options are in your hands: "Choice of White, Wheat, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Cheese, Mayo, Oil & Vinegar & Seasoning." Their house-made rolls are a godsend, as the sponges available around here often fail to hold up to the sandwich meats and condiments thrown at them. Phil's actually puts the lettuce through the slicer and gets the thin Easter-basket-style strings of iceberg that form the foundation of great sandwiches back east. They slice the tomatoes thin to leave room for the stars of the sandwich. They don't impose the wrong cheeses on you (there are sandwich and coffee shops out here that consider White American a perfectly acceptable substitute for both provolone and Swiss... none of which taste anything like each other). Most importantly, mayonnaise is not a default. They know that and their customers know that. When your meat selections feature ham, pepperoni, cotto, capicolla (!) and Genoa salami, they're aware that the meats provide the fat content while oil, vinegar and a bit of oregano season the toppings and soften the interior of the bread a bit. This is not hard, though Phil's contemporaries make it seem like forced labor. There's also the matter of "available upon request." Mustard and horseradish can be excellent with roast beef and pastrami, but should by no means be defaults. Similarly, hot peppers and onions can liven up an Italian sub, but are by no means necessary additions. I really like to think I can still go to town on a large three meats and cheese, but this place opened when I was in middle school and was probably better off trying to serve me that size sandwich then. Today, I'll take a small with a bag of chips and a drink and be on my way. I'm working my way up to a Warhead, and would probably love the meatball sandwich if I could toss some provolone on it, but Phil's gives me hope. I'd visit their sibling establishment Black Dog if it didn't break my rule against bars in highway strip malls. read more

Last time we bought sandwiches one was soggy and the other was burnt and short on cream cheese. 1/8 of a teaspoon is chintzy. The bread was burnt on the edges. They refused to refund or credit us. The employees also have bad attitudes. They don't care. I went to Phil's in the 90s when I lived in Forest Grove. The sandwiches were great! Now they just don't care. We'll never go back there again! (but they have an ATM inside the store) And now the food... I had a large #600 "Auntie M" - Ham, Turkey, Cotto, Capicolla, Genoa, Provolone, Cheddar & Swiss. It was delicious. The large is definitely large and comes cut into three sections. Everything tasted fresh and the bread was so good we bought two loaves to go so we could make our own sandwiches the next day. (A loaf of bread actually looks to be the size of two large subs.) They make their bread fresh every morning right there in the restaurant. It's so light and pillowy you could lay your head on it and take a nap. I ended up taking one of the sections back home with me and ate it later that night. It was still super yummy. My friend had a #400 - Turkey, Avocado & Cheese and loved it also. This place is a local treasure. I wish I lived closer to enjoy it more often. It's definitely been added to my list of places to go again because there are a few other sandwiches I was debating on vs. my #600 choice this visit. I can easily see stopping here on the way to/from the coast from my house in Beaverton. I'm also really curious about the 'Wall Of Fame' Challenge. Well I'm back in the area and had to stop by and get a sub. Wow I forgot how big the large is. Definitely enough for two people. This is a great spot. The people are so friendly and helpful. Seems like they have great specials as well. They open at 11 I got there as soon as they were opening the doors. My sandwich was made quickly and I was back to the job site to enjoy it in no time. We've only been here one other time and it wasn't bad with quite a few people in the place so we decided to stop by tonight for dinner. There was only one guy working and my boyfriend first said he saw him handle our money then not wash his hands before making the sandwiches (without gloves) for the customers before us.
