Never coming back. I was invited to have an easy dinner with my parents who are 79 and 94. I talked them out of The Hat to get Philly's Best since I had been eating there for decades. My mother raced down to the store since closes at 6pm on Saturdays. She made it with 15 minutes to spare. A couple of older ladies were sitting in a booth eating. Behind the counter was a female putting stuff away and a male scraping the grill. The male took her order and she ordered a cheesesteak, an italian, and a club sandwich along with some fries. Upon ordering the club sandwich the male behind the counter told her they were not serving any sliced meat sandwiches. She asked do you mean cold sandwiches and he replied yes. He then proceeded to make the cheesesteak and the italian but not the club. He never cooked any fries and they appeared in a metal to-go container. The two sandwiches he did make were ok but the fries were the nastiest fries I have ever tasted in my life. They were clearly old fries, not even reheated. You should be ashamed to serve a human being that garbage. Now on to why we will never be back. Your posted hours of operation are 10:30 to 6pm on Saturday. You should be open those hours, not putting stuff away and telling customers you cant make them food because you want to close up shop early. Furthermore the bs excuse you gave was clearly a lie as you made the Italian sub which has 3 different kinds of sliced meat and I have never once seen anyone slice meat on the spot to make a sandwich at Philly's. You had no problem making 2 more sandwiches for the gentleman that came in as our food was being bagged up so logic says the time she came in wasnt an issue. That was before your posted closing hours. I felt like crap because I talked them out of getting The Hat, your competition right down the street and then your service and your food SUCKED. As I said, we wont be back. I hope you closing up shop early was worth it. read more

Some of their offerings are definitely not authentic, but they're not just playing to a Philly audience, so good for them to know their customers. I loved finding Herr's potato chips and Tastycakes. The location I used to go to in Santa Ana also carried Franks sodas, but I didn't see those this time. I placed an order for three sandwiches through Postmates. I'd never tried Philly's Best before, but was really craving a hot sandwich after seeing one on a show. After placing the order, I came to Yelp (should've done it BEFORE placing an order, but it slipped my mind.) There were so many negative reviews about this place that I started getting nervous. When my order arrived, I was expecting to see the type of sandwich everyone was talking about. An underwhelming amount of meat, maybe a hair or two, something I wouldn't want to eat. At first glance, it didn't look bad. The warm sandwiches had lots of meat and cheese! The cold sandwich didn't have as much meat, but it ended up being the right amount without being too salty. I have never had a "real" East Coast Philly Cheesesteak, so I can't say whether it's comparable to this, but it was tasty! And now removed items from their Hogie menu. I always complained pizza fries are way bigger of you done in their super small restaurant if you find a seat. It's been a while since I had a Philly cheesesteak. I wanted to grab something quick and easy for dinner and was in lake forest. This came up as a suggestion and after eating I'm glad I decided to give it a try. Located in a business park off lake forest next to a round table pizza joint. Getting into the parking lot is a little of a challenge because there is no direct entrance from lake forest. However the ample available parking more than makes up for this shortcoming. Inside this place has been open for quite some time so it has an old school feel if you're into to that authentic time capsule dining experience. This is a sandwich shop so there are a limited amount of seats, then menu is presented on a big board in front of you and you have a view of the grill so you ca watch the process of getting your sandwich made. As far as food I ordered the Philly's best. One the regular way with slices of cheese peppers the other with "da wiz" with the liquid cheese. I actually liked the regular one better than DA wiz. Pretty bummed on my experience today, came in after work and ordered a plain steak cooked with old bay. I noticed on the screen he put in cheesesteak with light mayo. When I politely corrected him he looked at me like I was stupid and gave me attitude. When the order was ready I asked if they put the old bay in there again met with attitude they said they did. Small and boring! The only entertainment that you get out this location is listening to the radio. The TV's are small and they were only showing the news or old mlb highlights from 20 years ago. If you come here by yourself, get it to go. The Irvine location is a lot bigger and shows Philadelphia sports games. read more

I used to come here a ton when I lived in the area nearly a decade ago. On my most recent visit, I was really happy to see that it hasn't changed at all and is still just as good as I remember! Fast, affordable, yummy food. My cheesesteak came out piping hot and was loaded with meat and melty cheese wrapped in a soft bun. What's not to love! The menu is small and all of the items are basically the same (give or take 1 or 2 ingredients). I think there are maybe 1 or 2 cheesesteaks that have distinctly different flavor profiles. My boyfriend got the Buffalo Philly cheesesteak or something like that and he did not really like it. This review is based on multiple visits. Philly's Best makes the best Italian sub in South Orange County, in my opinion. I have had the cheese steaks there also and like them also. They also feature cheese fries and cheese steak fries which are pretty good. I will never order plain fries there again. The walls are decorated with Philadelphia landmarks and identify famous people from Philly. The prices are a little high and the restaurant seats few and features very cheap tables, chairs and booths. Parking can also be difficult in this location. I cannot deny how good the food is here so I can easily look past the other shortcomings. read more

I was watching food network....this is how it usually starts for me. Yep I was craving a Philly but always hesitant to get them because I tend to compare to the real thing in Philly but I was very pleased. I ordered the cheesesteak with onions and the cheesesteak fries just because the pictures looked so good. It's a small establishment but still enough seating inside and oustside to meet the needs of luncheoneers. The sandwich is a pretty good size so I split mine with my son. It was hot cheesy and flavorful. The meat portion was very decent and the bread was soft with a nice chew. The cheesesteak fries were simply divine and probably what I will always order. I am originally from Philly, and this is the ONLY place outside of Philly I will actually eat a cheesesteak. I went this past weekend - for dinner. Called in an order, and went to pick it up. While we were there, we had to order an additional sandwich. Our food was ready when we got there, and it didnt take long to make the fourth sandwich. Since we paid twice, we had to ask for a receipt... both times, and for whatever reason, the young guy working just couldnt figure out we wanted the second receipt from the second transaction as well. It took a few minutes to get it... it was a bit odd. When we got home, we realized the pickles were NOT good. There were not a lot left in the container, so I am guessing they had been out all day - not sure. But they were no longer good. I ordered a chicken cheesesteak with mushrooms and cheese and onions. My bread was completely soggy - which kind of ruins the sandwich. Besides us, there was one other man who came in and placed an order while we were there, and no one in the restaurant eating. It was 5:45 on a Sunday. I have never, ever seen a Phillys Best this empty. I think I will stick to the Fountain Valley location the next time I am craving a cheesesteak. read more

Went here on October 8 to get take out steaks for four Eagles fans who grew up in Delco where they really know how to make a decent cheesesteak. I have been a customer of Philly's Best since before they started franchising and have always thought they did a pretty good job (despite the petty extra charges for most things an East Coast shop gives for free). I hadn't been in this store since before Covid, though I noticed other stores have removed the pickles and peppers from the self serve area, as did they (which I can't help but think has nothing to do with Covid anymore, but rather a cost cutting measure) and reduced the amount of meat on the sandwich. With respect to the quality of the meat, it was sorely lacking. Perhaps I should be thankful that the roll was not loaded. At least I got some Amoroso roll uncontaminated by the off tasting "beef." I don't know exactly what cut of meat they use, but in this case it could not have been from a rib roast, unless it was cut from a "dropper cow." It was tough and had been "seasoned" with some unidentified substance, giving it a salty unpalatability. For the first time in my life I actually didn't finish the sandwich- and this from a guy who routinely will slam down a large East Coast Steak "wit everything- hot." I would not go back to this store ever. Do yourself a favor, buy a boneless prime rib on sale, freeze lightly and slice into thin portions, order some Amoroso hoagie rolls on-line, wrap and freeze, and then withdraw as needed. For about $40.00 you'll be able to make at least 15-20 cheesesteaks that will be 100 times better than you'll find here! read more
