It's been years since I got my eyes checked. Meanwhile I've beat my glasses up so bad I have to get…read morenew ones - and need to anyways with my driver's license coming due. The last place I went to, years ago, nearer my home in Westminster, featured an aging German couple who started out lacking any sense of customer service, and degenerated into outright hostility when it came down to working with insurance. So, having no clue where to start ... I walked into an "optician" shop not too far from downtown Frederick - and they only did glasses, but said they'd made plenty of referrals and got back plenty of raves for the eye exam by Dr. John. Sure enough, Dr. John not only gave me the exam, he gave full explanation of everything he was doing, including checks for health issues not directly related to vision (did you know they can spot early indications of diabetes, MS, kidney issues, and more from an eye exam??). Dr. John also answered lots of questions and worked through various scenarios on how I'd actually use the glasses (e.g. computer screen, skiing, whatever), to come up with a good solution. Plus it's no fuss - the exam fee includes all my follow up visits while I'm trying out some contacts. Recommended.

Would give them more stars if I could. I went to this establishment near the end of their day with…read morea eye problem and they couldn't have been nicer. Highly recommend. They resolved my problem quickly and their prices are surprisingly reasonable.

I would much rather support a small business rather than a big chain because good small businesses…read morethrive on exellent customer service, personal attention and quality of merchandise and care. Thurmont Eye Care lives up to all of these expectations. Dr. Carren is very thorough with her exams and took the time to answer all questions. She explained the mechanics of the testing procedures and shared the results. The staff at Thurmont Eye Care did not dissappoint either. They were friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. They did not rush my decision of choosing frames and offered insightful advice that I would never thing about. (I appreciate the personalized time because glasses are a full time accessory on your face! If you don't like them, you can't hide or adjust like you can with a wrong haircut or makeup.) I loved the service and loved this place and started recomending it immediately (as in as soon as I got home and talked to my family about my appointment.... how often is that the first thing you talk about when you walk in the door?)

I used to live in Frederick and followed Dr. Carren from there to her own practice in Thurmont. I ran out of contacts and had forgotten my glasses back home on a trip to Savannah, and she personally looked up my prescription and forwarded it to a SAM's club there so I could get contacts immediately so I could drive back home! The staff there is just as great! Thank you all!

Outstanding technician. Immensely knowledgeable provider. Delightful staff…read more Some optometrists are excellent technicians and refine your prescription to perfection. Some have great knowledge bases and answer questions on eye care with in depth, accurate, and actionable advice. Dr. Glasser is both, and arguably the best at both "sides of the coin" of any optometrist I've visited in my life. Importantly, Dr. Glasser and his entire staff are efficient and pleasant. They honestly try to make your visit as pleasant as possible. In an age where healthcare tends to be actively hostile to the notion of customer service, it is refreshing.

I have no issues with the quality of the examination or my in-person interactions with Dr. Glasser…read more(several appointments over many years). My issue is the way I was treated on my last visit by his assistant after it became apparent to her that I would not be buying frames or lenses from the practice. Her attitude immediately changed when I asked for a prescription. She stood up, went to ring up my copayment, and when she returned with the prescription she remained standing and was abrupt with me when I asked her to explain the change in my prescription, which was in a format I was not familiar with based on what I received in prior visits. I'm an educated person who wants to know how things work and what numbers actually mean, not merely to be told that "any qualified optician will understand" the prescription. I was made to feel stupid and like I was an imposition so I left and fed the prescription into ChatGPT which politely explained it to me, including how a progressive prescription can be translated into single vision distance and reading prescriptions, and what the numbers mean. AI was more polite and patient with me than the assistant. Despite having no issues with the doctor himself, I will not be returning to this practice in the future. The barriers between patients and medical information are evaporating due to AI. Doctors would be well advised to ensure that they and their staffs at least match the courtesy of ChatGPT. Update: In response to Dr. Glasser's comment, all I can say is that it would have taken his assistant less than a minute to sit down and politely explain to me the meaning of the numbers. Regardless of whether I'm dealing with an optometrist or a cardiologist, I take it upon myself to gain a thorough understanding of my heath, which is what ChatGPT provided and the assistant did not. If the doctor doesn't want to take constructive feedback on such a simple point, then I suppose that my decision to go elsewhere is the right one.
