Just went here for eye exam. Website said they take United Healthcare. Scheduled 3 weeks in advance. Called ahead to set up appt and left message on answering machine with plan # and insurance info day before. I take off work & get there and they say they do not take insurance from United Healthcare. I am told they haven't in 5 YEARS. I pull out phone & show them where my plan is listed on website and am told that they called to change that (not sure if the website company she was referring to?) and that hasn't been changed. 5 YEARS and that is not fixed? She says she will talk to the office manager to have it fixed. Too bad for me and missing work I suppose. The woman was nice enough and I don't blame her but this is ridiculous. We were in the Mt. Airy area and my daughter's glasses kept slipping off her nose, so looked for the closest eye place to get them adjusted. The setup is very modern/trendy and the staff was super friendly. They took care of us right away. The technician just had my daughter put on her glasses once, then walked away and came back with a perfect adjustment. Where we usually go, it's usually several tries to get them just right. I feel the prices were outrageous when I took my daughter to get an eye exam today and glasses. The total came to $850 (no insurance because they do not accept the insurance we have). That is $152 for the exam and $696.00 for the glasses and frames. I guess I should've shopped around! read more

It's been a few months since I was at Mt. Airy Eye Care, so I can definitely say that my eyeglasses' prescription was very good, the best I've had in several years, because my glasses are still serving me well. I don't feel as if I need new lenses already. The doctor explained to me, in a way I could understand, why my previous prescriptions weren't suiting me. I appreciated his taking the time to do that for me. Choosing the frames is always difficult for me because of the strength of my prescription and because I have a narrow face. I usually end up looking at children's frames! But Mt. Airy had a nice selection of frames that fit my face, and a special line that could be adjusted to fit. That pair has become my favorite pair (I bought two pairs of glasses). The doctor reviewed my order before it was filled and made a suggested change to improve my close-work glasses that actually meant I was spending less money. In other words, they were motivated to give me the right glasses, not just make the most money. I'm very happy with the care and product I received. My only criticism is the office was very small but I think they just moved so I'm looking forward to visiting them again when the time comes to get checked again so I can see their new place. read more

The optometrists are wonderful, but the front of the house who provides services for glasses needs some additional training. They over commit and under promise timeframes for eyeglass orders to be returned from lab. Two separate family members were told one week, the lab says two weeks, and the accurate timeframes seems to be 3-4 weeks. On both occasions the customer was told they would receive a call when the glasses arrived, however that did not occur. When we called to check on orders the receptionist said they do not make calls to inform customers of the arrival of orders. read more

They were patient when I tried 3 different combinations of contact lens prescriptions, making sure I had enough time to really determine which was the right one for me. Dr. Coleman and his team are fantastic! I starting using the Mt. Airy Eye Care team last year and have been 100% satisfied... I now live about 3 hours away and still drive to their office in Mt. Airy, it's worth the round trip. The staff is very friendly to work with, and very helpful in selections of frames, communicating your insurance benefits (and what it will cost you), and all around being good people. Dr. Coleman is very professional, and excellent as an eye doctor, but he'll also talk to you and have a conversation, making you feel more like a friend than a patient. I can't recommend Mt. My experience at Mt. Airy Eye Care was anything but pleasant. From the moment that I walked in, I felt like I was in a bad used car dealership. With the eye exam the way the examiner phrased my options for one of the exams was "You could get the eye drops which will make you sensitive to light for 4 hours (and all of the other negative side effects of the drops) or you could pay $39 for no drops." I didn't want the eye drops in the first place so I did the other exam, but I thought this was an unprofessional way of giving me my options. Then they kept on selling me on getting contacts, which I don't wear and repeatedly said I don't want. "They could be for weddings or kayaking." I have never kayaked in my life. When it came time to pick out frames and talk about lenses, I again felt like I was being haggled. I already knew exactly which frames I wanted and the woman kept on giving me a certain brand to try which was much more expensive than the ones that I had already picked out. When discussing lenses, she told me exactly what she was giving me instead of asking what I wanted. Then she told me the total for my pair of glasses with insurance was going to be over $350. The lenses alone were over $700 without insurance. WHAT!? This was my first time with vision insurance and I pay about that much without insurance. When I asked to just pay for the exam and to have a copy of my prescription, she asked if it was because the cost was too high. When I said yes, she offered to drop the cost down to $150. So...you can just magically slash over $200 off my bill now that I'm about to walk out. No thank you. I took my business somewhere else and they gave me exactly what I wanted for $177. I will not be returning to Mt. Airy Eye Care. read more
