I have been going to Phillips for more years then I care to admit. Still the best candy store in Seaside. I love the Seafoam so much I could make myself sick on it. ( so I only ordered 2 pieces) Their chocolates are wonderful and great quality chocolate. Way better than most places. AND they still have wonderful hard caramel and cinnamon candies. Phillips Candy Kitchen has been in Seaside for longer than I've been alive. I cannot possibly walk past the store without going in. MUST HAVES: The caramel corn is second to none. I am a huge snob about caramel corn....try it. If you like cheese corn, I know many who are big fan's of Phillip's cheese corn too, but I hate they way it turns my fingers and teeth orange. They make their own taffy in-house.....don't buy into the "Candy Man's" street front giveaways....they ship theirs in from out of state, and it's stale and not as flavorful as Phillips. They also are the only candy store in Seaside to hand dip their chocolates on premises. Their fudge and nut brittles are also made right there. It just doesn't get any fresher or more hand made than at Phillips. They are the only place I've found west of the Mississippi to make seafoam, which I grew up knowing as "chocolate covered molasses puffs". But, if you would rather have Zots or Sourpatch Kids or candy cigarettes, they have plenty to choose from. Yeah, the popcorn smell is heavy, but that is because the popcorn popper is right by the door......it has honestly never bothered me. I LOVED their taffy! The Lemon peanut butter taffy did not sound good, but it was incredible, and the chocolate peanut butter one was even better! There popcorn is really really good too. Yuck. I thought candy shops were supposed to be the happiest places in the world full of cheery people and yummy treats. Not so much at Phillips Candy Kitchen. We weren't greeted and the girl at the front had a really nasty attitude. We got a pound of fudge and a few pieces of the divinity bar. The fudge my best friend got was stale and made her want to puke and my divinity bar was dry and tasted like flour. If I wasn't so opposed to littering, I would've chucked it out the window on my drive down the coast it was so terrible. Disgusting. I would've liked to review a bit more about the other products they had but felt ready to go after the cashier's death stare. Absolutely not worth the time we spent there or the cash we forked over for their inedible "treats". read more

My wife and I go out of our way whenever we're at the coast for the Rocky Road fudge here. The hardest part about going in is deciding what else to get while we're there. So many of my favorite chocolates: Peanut Butter, Coffee and Malt truffles, Salted caramels and chocolate covered coconut. They also have very friendly staff and almost everything is made in house. Cinnamon salt water taffy. That's what keeps me coming back here every time I want taffy. There are no others that compare to the flavor and texture that are delivered here, day in & day out. Typically we just get the taffy, but the smells in here are amazing and magical. It transports me back to when I was a young girl and when our mother would bring us in on our weekend adventures. Yummy dairy free chocolate options. I got cashew bark, it was the size of my palm and ooohhh so decadent. When you order the ambrosial caramel corn from Phillips's they will ask you, lid open or closed? Always, I mean always order it "lid open"! Why you might ask. Because when you do they flip the box lids up and fill the box with even more of that fit for the gods, delectable, mouthwatering, heavenly, savory, delicious, tasty, toothsome, divine caramel corn. Throughout the course of my life I can confidently say that I have stepped into Phillips nearly 100 times. My family and I are from Seaside and even though we moved away, one of my greatest joys was the fact that through it all I could count on seafoam to always be the way I remembered it. cripsy...choclately...seafoamy (?). Well, fast forward to present day. I am told they changed ownership. The store layout definitely reflects the change. Sadly. that's not the only thing. My precious seafoam had changed as well. So chewy. Yes, chewy. The consistency is way off and the pieces are tiny. So disappointed. I found a recipe that is nearly as delicious as the old stuff online. But...it's not the same! The new store looks dirty, and the cheese and caramel corn officially look totally unappetizing. Yet, I still give them three stars. Because, I would have gave the original a 5 and the rocky road is still spot on. read more

This is by far the best candy shop in Seaside. I won't buy taffy anywhere else, because I'm obsessed with the fact that they're the only place in seaside that makes it in house. Super friendly staff in this candy shop, we enjoyed watching them package taffy on the old-fashioned machine. We bought some of their homemade taffy, chocolates, and caramel corn. I'm not a huge caramel corn fan, but this was delicious, more like kettle corn since it had a bit of salt to it. We are still enjoying the caramel corn at home a couple days later. First: Three generations of our family have until now been loyal to Phillips during our annual vacations in Seaside. And it may seem petty to lower a boom on them because of their relentless price-raising, but it has reached that point of being family-unfriendly. $7.50 for a medium box of caramel corn?? Yes. And none of their legendary "topping off" goes with this premium price anymore. Two weeks ago I paid this, but voiced a protest to the employees. We love taffy and walking into the store, they were making it right there. We got really excited and bought quite a bit. It's behind the counter, so they grab it themselves, so we did not touch it. We bought a lot. Later that night, I grab a few pieces, a butter and a cinnamon. The first thing I noticed was that the taffy was quite hard, you could not squish it between your fingers, which is my usual test for whether someone is selling me some out of state substitute. I tried a piece and it had great flavor, but it was actually so hard that it was somewhat tough to eat. If was not the more usual melt in your mouth taffy experience. Instead, it would slowly start to mold, and then suddenly it would be one with the roof of your mouth. Stuck. Firmly. To continue to eat this taffy required some kind of tongue swirling maneuver, which finally consumes enough that while still firmly affixed to the top of your mouth, it would start to curl over your front teeth. If was actually sort of ridiculous, and while funny it's actually not so enjoyable. I've tried it a few more times and again while the flavor is good, I think I'm actually going to throw the large bag of taffy away. Neither of us will eat any more of it. I don't get it. Maybe this is their style, or maybe were just getting season end stock. I figured their top sellers would be prime. Never had theirs before, so maybe everyone else likes this rock hard taffy. For me, I don't like it. Not at all. I suspect we got some old taffy, but it was all the same for every flavor we purchased including the most popular, butter and cinnamon. My chocolate fix was fixed here. The caramels actually melted in my mouth. No stale, filling-pulling caramel here, folks. They also had dark choc seafoam that was very very good quality. My parents were married in Seaside many moons ago. We live in Las Vegas, NV now, and have been ordering Phillips candy for more years than I can remember. The chocolate mint meltaway truffles, my mother's favorite, are melt in the mouth creamy, rich and wonderful. My dad went for the dark chocolate peanut clusters, and my favorite is the suntans, super creamy butter rum centers dipped in chocolate and rolled in sliced almonds, although I do love their salt water taffy. They have a funky atmosphere, nothing fancy...but the candy is good, prices are competitive and they have FREE gift wrap, which they don't advertise, but when I asked for a ribbon, they told me! I go there whenever I am in Seaside at least twice a year! I've been know to create reasons to go to Seaside, even though the real reason is, I need my candy fix! I've tried just about everything in the store, from their chocolate covered Oreos, their carmel and cheddar corn, their almond/cashew and chocolate bark, their taffy, the list goes on! Amazing! I was watching the family hand making Taffy and candies in the 80's (1900) and would hand them out to "Hollywood" stars I worked with. Friends have sent their delicious taffy to my daughter at UMASS medical. This soon to be Dr. (nuro-biology) keeps it in the lab. I think to analyze. It disappears, so I now hide it. My son and I stopped here during Spring Break this week. Another reviewer here talked about the 'death stare' and that is exactly what happened to us too. We picked out some packaged candy from the rack, and headed over to the cash register. The girl behind the counter was sweeping the floor and didn't bat an eye towards us ( the shop was pretty busy with customers so why she was not helping the customers was a question to being with.) So we go over to the other register and that girl is helping someone else. So then we go back to the 1st register and see the popcorn girl standing there. So my son asks if he can pay. Total death stare, it was scary. She didn't respond or say anything and then turned toward a customer that must have asked from some popcorn when we were away at the other register. So basically I guess we (in her eyes) were out of turn. So my poor son just stood there and didn't know what to do. Then finally the other girl comes over and yells loudly 'what can I help you with.' So I say, 'we are just trying to pay.' And then this girl finally gets it, that we don't want popcorn or anything and we just want to pay for our pop rocks and be on our way. No death stare from this girl but she also clearly was not happy to be there. No smile, etc. It was a very scary place and I would not return. read more
