I would like to share my feedback following my recent experience with Philippine Airlines, particularly for my first outbound flight after the pandemic. While there were a few positive aspects, several areas need significant improvement to ensure a more satisfactory experience for future passengers.
1. Pre-Flight Experience and Staff Interaction:
The pre-flight experience was somewhat disappointing. I encountered confusion regarding baggage rules at Terminal 1 of JFK. While Philippine Airlines does not allow belts on luggage, other airlines operating from the same terminal do permit them. Additionally, the staff was not as accommodating as expected, which made the overall experience feel less welcoming.
2. Aircraft Condition and In-Flight Amenities:
The aircraft itself was in need of an upgrade. The seats were worn and uncomfortable, and the inflight entertainment system was outdated with a limited selection of options. This made the experience particularly challenging, especially during flight delays.
To add to the discomfort, the air conditioning malfunctioned about 3-3.5 hours before landing. The captain informed us that it was being fixed, but the issue was not resolved by the time we arrived. Given the prolonged delays and the heat, this lack of proper ventilation significantly impacted our comfort. However, I am grateful to report that we arrived safely, despite the challenges.
3. In-Flight Food and Beverage:
The food and beverage offerings also need improvement. The choices were limited, and there was no apparent option for vegetarian or vegan meals. Additionally, it would be great if bottled water were made available to all passengers, not just those in first class. Serving water in open plastic cups does not seem ideal, especially in the context of ongoing health concerns like COVID-19.
4. In-Flight Crew Service:
While the crew did their best, there was a noticeable difference in the level of attention given to first-class passengers compared to those in economy class. I believe the crew could be more accessible and attentive to all passengers, regardless of their class.
5. Flight Reliability and Boarding Process:
Flight reliability was another area of frustration. The departure time was changed twice, and my seat was reassigned without any explanation. This lack of communication only added to the confusion. The boarding process was also disorganized and painfully slow. Multiple lines formed, with unclear instructions being given, which led to a great deal of confusion. Clear, concise communication and a streamlined boarding process are essential to avoid such inefficiencies.
6. Arrival and Immigration Process:
Upon arrival, the experience was similarly disorganized. While the online e-travel card was completed, passengers were still required to fill out a paper form, which seemed redundant. It would be more efficient if the new system was fully integrated and eliminated the need for outdated processes. I understand this may be an issue with Philippine Airport Immigration, but it's worth addressing.
7. Baggage Claim Process:
The baggage claim process was another point of frustration. After a long and tiring flight, passengers had to rush to the carousel, only to find that luggage carts were stored near the exit close to Carousel 1. It would be much more efficient if carts were made available on both sides of the carousel after passing immigration, allowing passengers to avoid unnecessary confusion and walking.
Conclusion:
Overall, my experience with Philippine Airlines was far from ideal. While I understand that occasional issues arise, the number of challenges I encountered made this journey feel unnecessarily stressful and uncomfortable. I have flown with several international airlines, and my experience with PAL did not meet the standards I have come to expect, particularly for a flight of this price range.
