    banh mi chao

Contrary to what some people online are saying, this is not a pop up! I asked one of the workers, and it's just that they opened not too long ago. There was a queue when I arrived in the morning, and the wait was1 hour. When I left around 1 pm, the line was pretty short, so I recommend coming around then instead. On the weekends, they only serve banh mi chao, which is a whopping $28 but comes with unlimited bread. Overall, it was a really unique experience since I never had this street food in NYC. It was fun assembling the toppings onto the bread, even though the "proper" way is to dip the bread into the sizzling pan of toppings. The only thing to note is that despite the different ingredients (i.e. egg, cold cuts, pate), the flavors felt very one-dimensional. It's the flavor of the black glaze that's in the pan. It's a nice flavor, don't get me wrong, but if you're looking for more layers of flavors, I don't think you'll find it here. The baguettes are made in-house, and if you're lucky, you'll get a warm one. They serve banh mi sandwiches on fridays and only coffees mondays-thursdays. I didn't really enjoy the teas, and while the fish sauce coffee sounds interesting but my friend said the fish sauce is not detectable. I guess that makes sense but why call it fish sauce at the same time. I hope to find more things on their menu one day, but until then, I won't be going back since I already tried it.

The banh mi chow was awesome! It reminded me of the ones I've had in Vietnam, but in an elevated way, which worked really well. When I went, there wasn't much of a line, which made the experience even better. The atmosphere inside feels authentically Vietnam, and makes for a fun dining experience. The service is fast and efficient, and everyone is friendly. I also had the fish sauce caramel coffee, which was good. It didn't blow me away, but it was definitely a solid cup of coffee! I highly recommend trying this place out on the weekends for breakfast.

Hot tip from MGMT: Go before opening or around 2pm if you don't want to wait more than 30 min. No line if you just want coffee (deff get the fish sauce caramel). Worth the try, definitely one of the best baguette and pate in NY or the states. The food comes out pretty fast so you don't have to worry about being too uncomfortable with the small plastic eats. Definitely a cute experience, especially if you miss home in SEASIA.

I've had their regular banh mi on a random weekday and their weekend brunch. There was no wait for the regular banh mi. I only waited about 15 minutes for weekend brunch, I went right at opening. Their regular banh mi might be my favorite in NYC. The flavors and textures were on point. I don't think I'd get the Bánh Mì Chảo again. For $28 I don't think it was as good as their regular banh mi. The Vietnamese latte was really good!

Food was amazing - loved the breakfast set and so many savory flavors and textures! Plus the bread was bombbbbb! Be prepared to wait - I heard some people waited around 2 hours for a table. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty quick eats (I mean, legit one thing on the menu), but just be patient and make time to wait if you want to try the set.

Phe is a Vietnamese coffee shop that also sells banh mi on the weekends. I think this spot recently blew up which probably explains the reviews of the long lines. It seems to be a super small shop with limited resources, so plan your visit here accordingly. They have the outdoor seating that you see in Vietnam with the plastic stools and small tables. My friend grabbed their Fish Sauce Caramel Iced Coffee, which has been talked about a lot online. Unfortunately, it barely tasted like fish sauce which is what I was excited for. The iced coffee itself was still good, but I could have probably just gotten their regular iced coffee and paid less. I do want to come back to try their food in the future and to hopefully get a seat in those plastic stools for the vibes!

First, I love the coffee. I had the fish sauce caramel latte. It doesn't really have the fish sauce taste, probably blending so well with the coffee. It is an interesting concept, first time eating banh mi like eating shakshouka. The ingredients are flavorful but too salty. I needed more bread to go with it. One reviewer said you can have bread refills, but no staffs mentioned it. So we didn't get more bread. I recommended go line up 5-10 mins before opening on weekends. Otherwise, you would be on line for a long time.

Be prepared for a wait! We came right before opening and still had to wait 1.5 hours. You'll see most of the negative reviews are around the long wait, the actual food is pretty good and it's difficult to get this quality of food in NYC, hence the long lines and wait. Banh Mi Chaos are around $30 each and come with free bread refills. Coffees are around $7.50 each and taste excellent. There's no tipping so prices end up being reasonable. Food was amazing and filling, made with a level of precision unique to the Mam restaurants. You'll sit on plastic stools and in warm heat, but that's part of the fun. Overall amazing time and food!

Came here at 11:50 on Sunday and waited a little over an hour to get seated. For how long the line was, I would say it moves decently quick. There's only 1 thing on the menu and the food comes out quick!! Incredibly delicious and overall amazing service.

Waited ~2 hours during the weekend for a table for two. Will say that the operations of this so called restaurant are interesting... Saw this group sitting outside eating a vermicelli dish, yet our waiter told us that the only thing on the menu food wise is Bánh Mì Chảo. Saw a solo female go up and ask the waiter if there was a table for one instead of waiting in line like other normal, respectful people lol. They don't even have a food menu that states how much the Bánh Mì Chảo is so very odd, the only menu there is, is the drinks menu of the Viet coffee and the different iterations. The Bánh Mì Chảo is good but very rich and heavy and not worth $30 lol you can literally buy a banh mi and take it apart and make it look all fancy on a plate to help with the delulu-ness. The coffee is not anything worth writing home about, Le Gaz is much better in this department. All in all, one time for the one time but I was left very filled (by the carbs, you can also get refills on the bread) and thought the ratio of wait time and quality of the food / drinks and the pricing is very whack. The person I dined with here is Vietnamese and told me people back home are seated like this due to poverty, so kind of odd that Phe decided that the seating would be like this. Although we were seated indoors, we were right next to the coffee line - I think they're still figuring things out but the flow of that line was a blocker to the employees / customers who were inside.

I hate to say it but it was well worth the line. The food was amazing. The coffee was great! Unique experience for sure and worth it

Pretty solid Vietnamese breakfast / brunch platter. I believe this is the sister restaurant of "Mam" next door. What I appreciated is the true Vietnamese ambiance. If you've ever been to Vietnam, their glass enclosure at the entrance is very reminiscent of Banh Mi stands in Vietnam. The higher prices you pay are to support NYC rent (so temper your expectations don't expect Banh mi stall prices or Vietnam prices), quality supplies, and wages for labor - so expect $30 per Banh mi chao plate. Good thing they don't accept or charge tips because of this. The Banh mi was very atypical of a Vietnamese baguette - with a thin crispy exterior but pillow soft interior. I loved that they had Laughing cow cheese and pate in the plate. At the very least, stop by for their Ca Phe Muoi - I love Vietnamese salted coffee so much, I had it everyday when I was in Vietnam. It's arguably the best Vietnamese coffee in the city out of the coffee shops I've tried. Kinhfolk comes in at a very close second behind Phe. "Rất là ngon!"

While the food was delicious the service was disorganized and not the best. The open time was delayed even with a line down the block and once I was sat I saw so many empty tables but people still lined up waiting and I never got water or bread when I ran out. The weekend breakfast dish is absolutely delicious and worth trying but maybe when the lines aren't so bad.

We only wanted coffee & tea yet after reading about their cookies, we bought 2! First, my English Breakfast tea was outstanding. The brand, serendipiTea. So good I didn't need to add sugar.
