I'm leaving this review to share my experience so others can make an informed decision. I brought my Acura MDX in for a smog check and was told it failed due to rear oxygen sensors having spacers. I was advised the issue would need to be fixed before it could pass. Something didn't sit right with me, so I sought a second opinion. I had the vehicle visually inspected by a knowledgeable friend and then took it to my regular smog technician. Neither could find the spacers that were supposedly present. My regular smog shop ran the vehicle through the machine and it passed immediately with no issues. In addition, I was uncomfortable with a comment made suggesting I should have a "husband" handle the situation for me. That felt unnecessary and unprofessional. I'm grateful I trusted my gut and got a second opinion, as it saved me a lot of stress and an unnecessary long drive. I recommend others do the same if something doesn't feel right. read more

Given my last review was four years ago. I figured I'd give you guys an update. I go here every year for my smog. I go here every time I need a tire. Every time I am here, I am at the point where the owner catches up with me. Even if I call around closing time, they will always try service me. Phan's shop is probably one of the last real mechanics, trying to give people a deal versus up charging every single customer. I have saved hundreds of dollars and time just letting Anh change my tire and he will always let me know if my car is acting weird. This shop is amazing. I've been coming here for so many years. I lived in the area, moved out of the area and still come back here. Even though I have a Tesla now, they still take care of my tires. He always tells me straight 'girl your tires are bald!' And I said man I need new tires. But, if he can patch it, he'll patch it but if not, he'll let you know your tires is bad and you need some new ones. Currently back in the area and still come here. They don't smog cars 86 or older so got to find a new spot. Plus their prices go up depending on the mood of the guys working there.

This place is so shady they change for service they don't even do, discriminate on women . So if you are a single woman don't go here they will disrespect you and discriminate you. Went in for service and the guy totally dismissed what I needed went on to the next car told me to talk to his boss charged me and laughed at me because I asked what they were charging me for if the problem was still there. Had to look for another place to get service done. I think everyone goes here because it's Newark it's small and everyone just wants to get the service done locally. So if you want a long wait, shady service, and the problem not to be fixed, discriminate for being a woman go here otherwise find a place that actually cares about the customer. I was looking for a place where they provide services installing tires I had already purchased elsewhere. Most shops were charging about $50-60 per tire, while other places like Walmart charged less but I knew it would take the entire day to complete. The husband found Phan's Smog via Yelp and suggested I give them a shot. I arrived late afternoon on a weekday and luckily, I beat the rush! Phan was welcoming and friendly, and he was quick in getting my old tires off and new ones on. Due to the sudden rush, he was bouncing between customers so the installations took a bit longer, but nonetheless still fast! I was in and out in about 20-30 minutes. So far, I'm happy with the installations and pricing was very reasonable. Will be returning if I ever need additional tire services. Side note, watch out for the dip when entering/exiting the shop! read more

We ended up needing a smog check done for my daughter's car after I gifted it to her for graduation. When I called another repair shop down the street to inquire about getting it done there, they recommended Phan's. They are pretty easy to find - right next to All Star Burgers in the Old Town area of Newark. Pulled up a few mins past 9 am on a Tuesday and there were already 3 cars parked in the small driveway waiting for them to open. Found a parking spot in front on the street and stood outside until Mr. Phan Sr. got there to manage the chaos that awaited him. The vibe was very warm and welcoming however it was hard not to get annoyed when someone else pulled up for a smog behind the car that was parked in the driveway (despite us being there before her). We had been standing in front waiting patiently and were offered chairs to sit but not asked what we were there for. It took about ~ 40 mins. for us to be helped (since someone else cut the service line). Another man had also pulled up by this time and was patiently standing around waiting. However he ended up walking into the smog area to loudly complain that someone else had also been helped before him despite being there first. Based on my experience, my words of wisdom would be; if you are coming here for a smog, don't be afraid to just pull your car up into the driveway behind the current car. It's NOT a one way driveway so that car is going to pull forward, not back out. If you come for any other service, park on the street and walk inside to let them know you are there. They get busy and are trying their best! Glad the car passed and it was $60 for the smog and certificate. PS: there is also a small private parking lot just behind the driveway if the street parking is full. Good luck! read more

I come here all the time for tire changes and smogs. And there usually very reasonable on the prices. But the owner is a bit of a jerk sometimes. For example I called in to confirm if he had a tire in stock and he said yes come in. I drove there only to find out they do not have the tire in stock and got yelled at saying I was talking to the wrong person and he never said they had it,, ok bud. But besides that there reasonable and ok. read more

Extremely bad attitude and arrogant. Zero respect towards customer and unprofessional. They think customers are dumb people obligated to just give them their hard earned money without asking any questions. If ask questions they will get aggressive and even use cuss words. I had a family member take my car for smog check bc i was busy with work. They failed it on visual inspection saying the emission system is tampered with (it passed the functional test). Why not do the visual inspection or pre-check first? Charged $60. I remembered there was factory recall done 5 years ago for emission. I went in with paperwork. Guy 1 (one with glasses) sent me to guy 2. They did this a lot btw for no reason. Guy 2 looked at the paperwork which showed what was done n said no because some part is not there. Send me back to Guy 1 who repeated the same thing. I asked why it passed smog 2 years ago he got loud and said "idk idk". At one point said (with a heavy accent) how long have i been in this country which was appalling. I said i can take it back to the dealership but tell me what the exact problem is. Continued to say the dealership did not do it right and some sensor is missing and was adamant n said no way it is right and went on to say how he has 25 years of experience and dealerships cannot be trusted. At this point i thought maybe dealership did mess up. Despite my busy schedule i set up an appt at the dealership and had to leave my car for inspection. (They were ready to charge me $ 350 btw). They called back and said everything was fine and was done part of the recall. I asked them to write a detailed explanation so i can show at the smog.(the explanation was basically the same in the original receipt but said it was mistaken for tampering but should not as it was done part of recall). Took the receipt back to smog. Guy 1 sends to Guy 2. Guy 2 looks at it and says no and tells me to take to referee. I ask what more proof does he need n he keeps saying no. Now at this point i know they are just incompetent with zero accountability so i ask for my money back bc i know other stations will pass. Guy 2 sends me back to Guy 1 who was apparently listening. I tell Guy 1 to give my money back. Guy 1 looks at the receipt and says he will pass it. I was upset and told him they should not treat people like that and at least consider things that could have happened. IMO they should know there could be situations like factory recall if they are experienced professionals. He got loud again and started using cuss words. I was shocked at the lack of accountability. I ask him if he can remove the smog "fail" from the system bc it did not fail. He ignored me. I asked again and he gets loud saying noone can remove it, again zero accountability and professionalism. If they had been cooperating and at least acknowledge it specially after they were showed the paperwork the first time, i would not be upset. The fact that one guy says no and other guy passes it, i guess they can do whatever they want even though they are licensed by the states. Some people can just ruin your week for no reasons. Kind of people you hope you never have to deal with. read more

I went to visit my regular mechanic, who was only a couple blocks away from Phan's Smog Station. My previous mechanic was no longer in charge of his shop, so the other employees directed me to Phan's Smog Check Station. I was in need for a smog check. Luckily Phan was close by. When I arrived here, there was one car ahead of me getting smogged. The service was pretty quick and friendly. My total time spent here was less than thirty minutes. After passing my smog check, I went ahead renewed my car registration. I would definitely recommend this place, if you do need smogging services. read more

Been going there for over 20 yrs. It's time to go elsewhere their prices are made up on the spot and they go up and up from month to month. I asked how much for swapping out four tires and balance. Was quoted $160. $40 a tire. Come on get real. I went down the street and got it done for $100. Price gouging customers that been loyal to your business is not a good look. Dreaded DMV mail came in for that yearly registration, turns out I needed to smog my car again this time. I was recommended to this smog shop by a friend who had a great experience. I live in Oakland but work in Unions City so I decided to make the trek out to Newark. I was greeted by Tri who greeted me promptly and was able to assist right away. I was in and out in about 15 minutes. He went over everything and I was on my way. It was a little busy as there is also a tire shop next door as well but they were helping everyone efficiently and quick. Great energy and even better customer service.
