This ensures they don't accidentally have ballooning litters by accident even if the staff can't sex the critters. A smart move. And it also makes it easier to know if they have a pet or not. In the gender you want. For example I don't like boar cleanings. So I only want female guinea pigs. Males need cleanings and it's so gross not my cup of tea. Where as with Syrians I prefer males to females cuz females go into heat every 4 nights and some of them let off an aroma that attracts males but it stinks up the room. Every 4 nights so for me. When we were out doing errands and needed to pick up some supplies (cat litter) for our new feline, we hightailed it to the closest PetSmart Google could find, which turned out to be the Grandview Highway location. I had passed by this mall-on-a-hill many times before without giving much thought about the specific stores/restaurants that are there. Petsmart shares the higher level with the Canadian Tire and Boston Pizza/Starbucks entrances. Walked in and I was struck by the open bright space. All the aisles were labelled clearly by pet, and we saw our fair share of pets wandering the aisles with their owners. We found the cat litter aisle in two seconds flat, but it was harder to find our specific brand/type. Thankfully we flagged down an employee and he helped us locate our product easily. Took the bag to the front, purchased it, and we were off on our next set of errands without breaking a sweat! Great place for pet supplies, but not so good for pets. This big box store shares a parking lot with Canadian Tire, Starbucks and Boston Pizza. There's lots of parking, and you can run multiple errands while here. They have a huge selection of pet supplies including foods, cages, kennels, furniture, toys, habitats and clothing. Prices and selection for a wide range of budgets and tastes. However, the pets available for purchase is limited to birds, fish, small rodents, small reptiles and the occasional cat. Dogs are nowhere to be found. They do sell live worms and crickets for reptile food, but I guess you could buy them to be pets, if you really wanted. The fish here often look sickly, emaciated, discolored and deformed. Definitely not the best place to get top quality ornamental fish. Great place if you already have a pet. This store is HORRIFIC and displays UNACCEPTABLE ANIMAL CRUELTY. Rats are highly intelligent, social, animals. They also have extremely sensitive respiratory systems. Putting them in a container like this not only stresses them out but also puts them at risk of chronic URI's. I told the cashier that he needs a proper temporary enclosure and I believe they did go back to get one. But it's shameful this happened at all. Would you put a puppy in a Tupperware container? I wonder when this place will go the way as their neighbor a few years back. I can't see PetSmart, in this location survive too much longer, as they don't carry much, their prices, even with their coupons, are expensive, there is a Tisol not too far away, and they barely carry any pets to lure the new buyers. Selection is scarce of everything, and there is not much of an identity. They are a little better, in terms of setup to PetCetera, but at least that place had deals on a weekly basis. The positives, few, clean, new, in a plaza so it is convient to buy your Starbucks, or go to Canadian Tire, and there is parking, I can't think of anything more. Walked in here one day, I had just come from Wal Mart doing my grocery shopping. I do not drive, and take the public transit so I use a backpack and re-useable shopping bags to get my supplies home. As it is the Covid 19 pandemic, I had particularly more stuff with me that day, should I not be able to buy it elsewhere. Upon walking in, Barry was standing there, and immediately looked me up and down and asked if he could help me. I said nope! I will be in the dog aisle. I have been going to this location FOR YEARS! and know the layout quite well. I got an extremely distrusting vibe off of this guy. He also had eyes that looked in two different directions like a homeless Steve Buschemi in that Adam Sandler movie. I was looking at the dog treats and saw the security guard at the end of the aisle watching people. I didnt take much notice to him until he was in every aisle that I was in! I started to play games with him because I knew exactly what he was doing! He was following me to ensure I wasn't jacking anything! Let me preface by saying that I am a 32, female, young professional. I have NEVER been followed like this before and thought it was hysterical. The security guard was a decrepit old man, couldn't move fast, so when I went to go look at dog beds he couldn't keep up. Cockeyed Barry shows up, in the same aisle as me, hot on my tail. I have been a customer at several pet smart locations for the past decade. My dog had a grooming service at 2870 Bentall st location on May 20. I am very disappointed and horrified by an injury to my dog as a result of gross negligence by the staff; who compounded the issue further by failing to notify me. While shaving my dogs left front arm pit, they shaved two inches of his skin off. Upon my own discovery, I brought my dog to a vet, he had to be sedated to get a treatment and for infection. Obviously my dog has been severely traumatized. I cannot understand how the staff properly trained staff could cause such a serious injury, let alone say when I picked him up "everything was great." I wandered in having arrived early to the area to meet a galpal after she finished work. Having recently ad opted a cat I'd been throwing the idea around of getting a cat tree/large post with platforms so went over to the cat section. Can't say that anything seemed especially organized and as I wandered around hoping for grocery store signage which would at least say WHERE the cat posts and/or hairball remedies would be, I came across the corner of the store where in the highest possible spot totally unreachable by customers, are they're cat posts. As I peered, squinted and crossed my fingers, no such luck in any signage/price labeling/info could be found anywhere. What did I expect? Although for a moment I entertained the idea of crawling up the airplane like wheely staircase pushed up against a back wall... Hmmmmm. If it wasn't for the visual of my potentially crashing to the ground on something not-secured or something... I'd gone further with it for sure. Or at least my imagination is saying so. Foiled at these simple tasks I thought I'd retrace my steps to see if I could find a staff member, any staff member. You would think that with a floater staff member and 2 cashiers in a dead store Wednesday afternoon at 4pm, that at least ONE person somewhere would be available to ask questions and greet customers. I went here to pick up some Christmas gifts for our dog and cat...yeah, we like to spoil them during this time as they're like our children...extremely hairy children. Parking is easy to find as it's a big shared lot with Canadian Tire and Boston Pizza. Inside, you'll be greeted by some of the friendliest staff I've ever come across, not kidding! They were really kind and helpful as I was looking for a electronic de-odourizer for the cat's bathroom. I picked out a sweater for the dog and some nylabone treats as well. They have a great assortment of toys, leashes/harnesses and shampoos, much more than a smaller store like Tisol. This place is big, well-lit and the staff are ok. They carry a lot of stuff. A lot of it is pure junk and should not be in a petstore. Some of it is ok as well. However, my big beef here is the pricing. They are not at all cheap. I buy Carefresh bedding for $24.99 (full price) at the Petcetera by my house. This place had the exact same one for $39.99 but it was "on sale" for $32.99. I fail to see how this is in any way competitive pricing. Illusionary sale pricing only serves to infuriate me. I've noticed this trend the last few times I've visited this store. They seem to be a good 20-80% higher than their competitors. I usually buy raw food but I always keep a bag of kibble around to mix and use random times when the raws out. PetSmart had such a massive sign and I was already going to Can-Tire so I dropped in for a sack of Science Diet. HAHA. Everyone seems to be a fan of it, their food reviews give it 5 stars from 65 people. Price was $30 or so for a huge sack . That will do for months. I rank this place like I do Can-Tire, sure a lot of people bash it, and expect SERVICE from the employees. Ever since Petcetera closed, I've not set foot in any giant petstores except for Petsmart (although my choice are limited in Vancouver). I went last week and there wasn't very many people in the store but all the staff there were friendly and helpful and asked if they can help us find what we were looking for (maybe my friend and I looked helpless?). In anycase, it had lots of things and the store was very neat. Like Petcetera they get points for having an adoption center for dogs and cats, although they only had one cat there. The only thing they would lose points for is their gold fish tanks that were crammed tighter than a morning rush-hour skytrain headed for downtown. Some of the fish looked like it had diseases, and others look like they had been sleeping upside down for an indefinite time. Overall, good selection on products and good staff. But I'm not sure this is the place I'd go to buy my fish (should I have the need to acquire more furniture). read more

Wether because of poor management, pandemic staffing levels, or lack of resources, this Petsmart is a dissapointment. Fish are kept in poor conditions: clouded water, crowded tanks. The snail I bought was shoved in a plastic basket in the plant tank, in stagnant unfiltered water. There were two dead ones floating at the top for pete's sake! Plants sitting stacked on their sides, rotting, and their selection of aquarium supplies is lacking. None of the basics, even the one at Station Square is better supplied than this. read more

The store manager "Tarun"; was very polite and extremely understanding, he honoured my coupon and refunded me the discount. First of all there is a small selection of reptile misc! There's always nobody at the fish section and I have to wait for someone at the till to come.. and waiting for all the people buying there products at the till can take up to 10 minutes, of just waiting there when there's no one in any other isle. I bought a betta here to save it since it was very sick! The lady said just bring back the receipt if it dies in the 2 week period. It died 1.5 weeks later if it's sickness that could not be healed but I thought it needed a chance of a fish hospice tank, and to try to save it. I branch the recept back after it passed and I told them that my betta passed and here's the recept so I can replace it.. they said that I needed to bring the DEAD fish carcass back to prove it. First of all I spend thousands of dollars each year here for all my animals, fish, reptiles and dogs. I come here 2 times a week. After fighting and bargaining for 20 minutes with a lady she told us we needed the dead fish here. we asked for the manager, and we told him one of your staff said that you just need the receipt here. Because she did. he came and did give us a free new betta! That was amazing! But train your employees to tell the accurate to people! REPTILES; Some of the reptiles are in such bad condichion! Specificificly the veiled chameleon! First of all it was in a 2-4 gallon tank, no screen, no UVB light because it's adding in with the heat! But that's not enough. The hudmity was down and they never sprayed the tank! Only an old water bowl and not all chameleons drink from one. It had sunken eyes, and a big fleshy cut in its leg. Bleeding. It looked so sad just sitting there at me saying "Hellp me!" I planned to save it but then I Dident have enough money to. I already have a chameleon at home and a lot of geckos with 15+ fish tanks. (Groomer review) The store itself is so so. I can rarely find what I want there however they do carry a treat that my dog likes and does not have a reaction to. I've had very good luck with the groomers there. I get minimal things done, but they always do a good job and handle my dog well. The one guy who works there is a bit of a turn off, but all the female staff members have been fantastic. For whatever reason there is always a high turnover of (female) staff, which never reflects well on the workplace and suggests people are not happy there. I'm not saying that's necessarily the case here but there IS a reason it's a bit of a cliché. I do as much grooming as I can myself, and my the rest I had been leaving to my vets, but over the years I found they had strange techniques which didn't make for my dog being a happy camper. one star is still too much. so, i went out and got my daughter a pet. lady who helped me, and said that the pet i wanted is a perfectly healthy one. so, i took it. took it to my daughter, after receiving it few hours later my daughter ( a teenager ) already knew there was something wrong with her new pet. my daughter with her quick thinking, asked to take her new pet to the animal hospital immediately. after taking it to see the doctor, doctor informed that, the pet has an infection due to unhygienic environment for sometime, and making our pet to have difficulty breathing, also informed by doctor that, lucky we took him to the see the doctor just in time, if later he might not make it. it was the store's responsibility to have this or any animal checked before selling. and it cost us hundreds just for vet fee and medications, we paid the bill for something the store not doing. my daughter, her mom, and i we were all furious about the fact that there is 4-6 staff there working, none of them knew that the animal was not feeling well? for days is not weeks. and took a teenage girl a few hours to notice that something was wrong. my daughter is mature enough to keep the animal and take care of it, did not want to return it and jeopardized it's life there. Let's break it into three parts... 1. The store. It's not that big compare to the one in Langley where I bought my GSD puppy her very first bunch of supplies... But they pretty much got everything you need... But less choices compare with the one in Langley. 4 stars then.... 2. Grooming. I like it there... I didn't make a appointment that time and they asked me to wait for an hour. It wasn't that bad for me since there is a white spot close by so I just went for lunch... Anyways... When I bring my GSD back to the store... I realized that I forgot to bring all her documents about her shots and the girls there were really nice, they called my dog's vet to get the confirmation they needed and told me that they need about 3 hours... And after 1.5 hours they said it's done... I went to pick my dog up... She did not smell as fresh as she should be... They said that's because that was her first time and she was scared of water and the dryer... Well... At least they gave me a bag of treats.... I paid $14.5 in total. And I give my dog bath myself ever after. would rate 3 stars for this. 3. F***ing dog trainer Well... That really pissed me off... After they gave my puppy a bath... One of the girl recommend me to take her to puppy school, and she introduced me to the lady who was in charge of it that day. So I asked a few questions and told her that I would give her a call if I want to sign up for it coz I am a college student, I am poor and I have to talk to my girlfriend about this. Then I got a phone call that night from her asking me if I am going to take the class... I said I need more time to think about it just not today and she just stopped from listening and just turned mad at me and said:" I am so sorry... I mean... I am not sorry about you... I am sorry for the dog... U should take her to the class earlier....." And my puppy was only three month old by then. Well... Why can't u just say something nice and I might call back to you? This store sucks. Fish department people know NOTHING about fish or the types of fish they have. They only know basics like what to feed them. Not stuff like which can be together or what temperature water they need ect. Dog training is a huge waste of money. After been bombarded Every time I go in there to sign up I eventually did it for my puppy ( back in July) So basically all you learn is sit/ lay down,walking on a leash, stay/come & drop it / leave it. My puppy didn't learn come/stay or drop it/Leave it. Why? Because we barely went over it. Classes are an hour long and every class Youre made to constantly walk up and down isles to teach loose leash walking (which majority of dogs can do by 6months) for at least 30mins. Every time you go The trainer says that we'll do walking for 10mins which turns into 30. For the next 15mins of the class she'll go over whatever subject it may be (ex. Sit or stay ECT.) then for the rest of the class she's promoting treats,toys ( she's obsessed with promoting KONG toys) and other store promotions. I didn't pay $120 to walk up and down isles. I could of just done that for free. And if your dog doesn't have a " proper" collar she makes you go to the isle and pick out one (usually the most expensive ones are suggested of course) On the last day of class we were supposed to do fun games and we didn't. What did we do? Walking. And she promoted majority of the class saying we should sign up for the next class I didn't bother signing up because it's a waste of money. I went a few weeks later to pick up some food and saw the trainer and she asked why we didn't sign up. I explained I didn't think my dog needed it and it's also a lot of money at the moment She had the most rude reply. She said " that should be an excuse. You own a dog and good dog owners should train their dogs" So she basically just said I'm a shitty dog owner for not giving her another $120 to waste my time Also with the class you get a package with coupons. All the coupons were expired by 4 months and they wouldn't even take them. read more

I brought my 4 month old puppy here for a training class. I was shuffled around class to class, changing the time and date for various reasons. Before signing him up i had addressed all those reasons above but the employee just said it was fine and they could handle it. Clearly not. The final straw was when they kicked us out of the class because the trainer had no idea how to train my dog. Then tried to get us to switch to private classes instead so we wouldnt ask for a refund. In my case, private classes would not have helped my dog because he needed socialization opportunities. Besides, if the trainer had no idea how to handle my dogs behaviour and kept blaming us for not doing something earlier, why would I continue attending classes with them? Im trying to help him now, blaming us and not offering a solution that works does not help us correct the dogs behaviour. I dont see any point in the blame game. To be fair, perhaps petsmart doesnt have the classes that can help my dogs problem, but as a professional dog trainer they should have offered practical solutions or alternatives at the very least. read more

So I brought my puppy in for a hair cut. First off they barely cut his hair, they trimmed his beard and eye brows but his body could have been way shorter and the bottom wasn't even touched. When I dropped him off the girl said it wouldn't be more then a couple hours, 4 hours go by and finally the call to tell me he's done. I show up and they bring him out to me covered in hair( my dog is a none shedding breed) apparently they wash them before not after the hair cut which makes no sense to me. They didn't clip his nails which is part of the package I had to ask for it to be done when I was there, THEN after all that and four hours of him being there and barely getting anything done they lost my leash, collar and dog poop bag holder that was attached. They gave me a new leash but I still lost the collar poop bag holder which I bought online and they didn't reimburse me or offer me anything! I also paid for lessons there but I doubt I'll even go back for that. I don't understand this place you should have an adult supervising these kids in the groomers cause thats bull! First of all i have a dog, i don't bring him to any of the Pet Smarts for grooming as they don't seem to want to take him in. He is not a high maintenance dog. Every now and then i like to have him cleaned up! I recently brought some fish for an aquarium that i have set up. The staff that was looking after that section was good and informative. It made my decision easy in where i was going in terms of selecting my fish. I called in about a noisy filter that i purchased and wanted to know how to return what seemed to be a defective filter. I was told by this person that all filters are noisy! this is not true, i had turtles in my 30 gallon tank with a huge filter system and it was quiet. So, instead of getting advise in where i can go with this, the person hung up on me. read more

#PETSMARTISTHEWORST #DONOTSUPPORTPETSMART #ANIMALCRUELTYSTORE #CASHGRAB #UNHEALTHYANIMALS #THEYDONTCARE #ASSHOLES Went to PetSmart on Grandview Hwy, Vancouver BC, to purchase new filters for the fish tank, asked the employee if she had a snail I could buy to help with the algae (as we have more than usual with the summer being so hot). She informed me that getting a sucker fish and a catfish would help and that our 5-gallon tank would support more fish as we only had one beta. I agreed to buy them and got them home. we waited about an hour or so before putting the fish into the tank, and as we were waiting, the suckerfish died. we thought maybe it was because the catfish was pretty stressed out, and jumping around the bag and speared the other one. So we took them back to the store. The same employee exchanged the fish with no question and we brought the second batch home. We inspected them and waited a few hours while they acclimated in their bags to the temperature of our tank. We introduced them and all was well. UNTIL two days later, our beta started acting very strangely, his little nose was out of the water, we put a flashlight on him to inspect his body for any marks, and he seemed fine. so we thought maybe the nitrogen levels were high in the tank. we waited one more day while aerating the water more, THEN WE NOTICED THE WHITE SPOTS OF ICH. (We have had our tank and fish for 2 years with no issues of health.) So, I called the PetSmart store and asked them if they had any ich treatments available. The lady on the phone informed me that they had a few products and that it would be okay. I then told her that their fish were sick and they needed to treat them right away as their fish had contaminated our tank... she replied with "Oh yeah, that usually happens when we get our new fish in." So, I asked her why they didn't tell us about this problem if it is a common one or give out treatment to all new fish parents, and she replied that it's just not in their habit of doing so. This morning the sucker fish was dead. SO... We go to take the fish back and the manager accuses us of just trying to get more "free" stuff for our tank. Then offers us a free beta fish to replace the dying one. (Like we want any more of their sick fish) DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS STORE! They keep birds and reptiles as well as rodents. IF THEY TREAT THEIR FISH WITH SUCH CARELESSNESS HOW DO THEY TREAT THE OTHER ANIMALS??? ANIMAL CRUELTY AT IT'S FINEST! I WILL NEVER SHOP HERE AGAIN, AND I WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW HOW BAD THIS STORE AND ULTIMATELY THE CHAIN IS UNTIL THEY CLEAN UP THEIR ACT (LITERALLY)! read more

I havn't had any bad experience in the shop. However I don't shop or do any service there regarding my dogs. The only purpose when I go will be at the aquarium area. There is an asian lady there being very friendly and knowledgeable to chat with. The equipments and fish food they have are actually quite limited but didn't bother me since I am usually there to pick small replacements or beta most of the time ( I would go other places if I need some more equipment upgrades). The only thing that kept me thinking regarding the place will be why can't they water change the beta cup more frequent so they don't often sits in filthy water most of the time when I visited. read more

Do not bring your dog / puppy for training here. The trainer does not spend anytime training your pet but instead they are more concern about signing up potential new customer and make a commission than train their existing customer. And when an issue was brought to the trainer about our dog behaviour. She not only ignore our concern and told me to address this problem at home instead. Why did I pay for training at petsmart when they aren't really training my dog. It was more like an inside dog park than anything. so by all mean AVIOD TRAINING WITH PETSMART (Jillian the trainer ) After the class finished.
