Having a PetSmart here has been okay, but nothing stellar. The private training lessons were pretty solid. There were always problems, though, and now this location will be closing in nine days. Items are overpriced for a PetSmart and for this locale. I mean, it's not George or Mishka's. Customer service was always tough to find on the floors. The groomers were not the most professional. I wondered whether many of them were new graduates or perhaps still in training? I noticed a lack of confidence, technique, and approach with my 14-pound Rat Terrier. This store has a huge footprint at City Center, and that's got to be expensive to rent. The combination of the issues I mentioned above--especially the lack of customer service and responsiveness--is likely a huge contributor to the impending closure. I never used this store as my primary resource; it was always a quick back-up for when I couldn't get to Pet Food Express, Pet's Corner, or Village Pet Supplies. The closure won't be a ginormous loss in that sense, but if you live near here, you may feel the absence. The good news is that the nearby Trader Joe's, and especially the Target, have good pet sections. read more

I've been bringing my dog to this PetSmart location for over two years. This visit was a nightmare. My regular groomers -- including Ashanti, who was excellent -- were no longer there, and the staff wouldn't give me any information about when she'd be back. The entire grooming roster had turned over, with no way to evaluate anyone's experience, credentials, or how long they'd been working there. I had a bad experience with one new groomer previously (poor cut, left stray hairs everywhere), so I was already anxious picking someone unfamiliar again. I dropped my dog off like any other day and went to work. A few hours later, my phone was flooded with missed calls from PetSmart -- vague voicemails with no real information -- followed by a call from an emergency vet telling me my dog had been brought in. It turns out the groomer, Shannon, had cut her dewclaw so severely that it had to be surgically removed under sedation. PetSmart tried to frame it as a "slight cut," but you don't take a dog to an emergency vet for a minor nick. To their credit, they did cover all of the emergency vet costs -- which, while appreciated, also tells you everything about how serious the injury was. I spent hours not knowing what was happening to my dog. When I finally got her back, staff kept passing me off to different people, no one would give me straight answers, and they handed her back shaved down like it was just a normal pickup. It was traumatic for both of us. I'm sharing this because people deserve to know what can happen when there's no transparency around groomer credentials or experience. There should be a way to know who is working on your pet and what their qualifications are -- not just a list of names with nothing behind them. I wanted to give their grooming services a few more chances. My dog has sensitive skin, so I try my best to inform the groomers not to trim/shave too close to his skin. The first couple of times were great, no issues at all and the groomers I had booked with were a pleasure, but the last two were not. The workers at the front desk still look miserable as ever. My dog came out with irritated skin twice now. This has ONLY ever happened after having him groomed there. I don't want to speak for all the workers since there are truly a few that are alright, but it seems like the majority hate their job. It's it completely unfair for the animals. The pets deserve workers who are passionate about working with animals, not teenagers/young adults who are careless and appear miserable. In the past this place and others would just shave my dog because of my dog was matted. Petco actually wouldn't groom my dog at all. In the past, they too, would just shave my dog or not do a very good job where I would need to perform a touchup on the cut because it was crooked. My wife would even ask every time to have me to let them not shave her. Honestly, i think this was out of laziness that they would shave her. The last couple of times i've gone, they didn't shave her head. They actually did a really good job making my dog look like a teddy bear. They must have upped the quality of their training of the groomers as I just pick whomever has the best time. As of late 2025-2026 and beyond on, they are doing great! read more

This review is only for its grooming service. Its Doggie Day Camp is fine; my small dog follows the larger dogs around and has a good time. After two separate grooming appointments in a three-month period, I find that its grooming service is the opposite of its day camp service: consistently incomplete grooming. During my first visit, Grace, the groomer, greeted my wife and me. We explained that we wanted a short groom, a teddy face, and a nail trim. After a three- to four-hour appointment, the Yorkie looked great at pickup, and he wanted to leave ASAP. However, arriving home, we discovered that Grace had not completely finished the Yorkie's teddy groom or nails. We did not want to cross a bridge and ask Grace to complete the work. My wife simply finished the head groom. We hoped the Yorkie's daily walks would grind down his unfinished nails. We can overlook an incomplete face and nail groom once. During a second appointment, we explained to a young, friendly Chinese male that we wanted a short cut, a teddy face, and a nail trim. Again, the Yorkie looked great at pickup, and he wanted out of the grooming salon as quickly as possible. However, again at home, we discovered an unfinished face groom and nail trim. Again, my wife finished the head groom. I bought a nail trimmer and finished his nails. A poor job the first time may be forgiven. However, a second poor job is a sign of a poor establishment. Therefore, please avoid PetSmart grooming services. I have taken my grooming needs to a closer, non-chain establishment whose employees groom like the groomers before I chanced upon PetSmart. Typically, clearance and sales items after holidays here are more limited than at non SF stores. It would be awesome if they had a similar doggie park in front of store similar to Petfood Express to occupy the pup while shopping. Pet Services: 4.5 stars The staff here are amazing each and every time I take my foster dog, Thor, in for services. The services itself are a 5 star. I took off half a star as lines could be long, it is not always easy to get a hold of the store in advance to check availability on the phone, and the line may take awhile to process services pending how many others are checking in dogs for services or doggie day care and hotel (same counter). Thor has always had a positive experience and lot of TLC from the amazing staff for nail trimming and grinding ($19), brushing his teeth ($19 he's stubborn so I usually leave it up to the professionals), and the self administered bath time is a great value for those of us without the proper setup at home or in my case, Thor's unwillingness to go into my tub. They have always been accommodating albeit being short staff sometimes. Tip #1: You must have proof of vaccination if you are going in for services and the self wash ($20). Limit 2 dogs at the wash at a time and no appointments needed. For the self wash, you will get three towels, unlimited usage of sensitive and melon flavored bath products, eye cleaner, and a deodorizer. The black water resistant aprons are always helpful when washing your pup too. Tip #2: make sure you sign up for rewards and check the bottom of your receipts for coupons. The prices are great, they're almost always stocked with what you need and the employees are really service-oriented and kind. They honored a sale price when I grumbled they'd been temporarily sold out during a promotion; they've loaded my car with four 28# bags of litter; they offer drive up and go shopping. From the moment you walk into their sun-drenched lobby and well organized and merchandised floor, you can easily find what you need. The lower floor is primarily for dog training and grooming with some related retail items. The only improvement they can make is their corporate office reworking their stingy rewards program but no shade on this retail location, they're terrific. Plus you can get your cat & kitten fix and ooh and ahh over the cuteness of their rescue cats available for adoption. read more

I always order on-line for dog food and pet supplies for both of my dogs. I find it really convenient to pullup in front and call for my order to be brought out to my car vs going in and standing in line for customer service to hand it to me. Especially the 26 pound bag of dog food is a bit cumbersome. Today, I drove over to pick up my online purchase at around 9:30 am. Called and got the standard recording: 'someone will be with you in a moment, thanks for your patience'. Stayed on hold for about 5 minutes with the recording repeating the same message. Then finally the recording says, 'staff is busy with customers, please call back.' I called two more times, but no one picked up the phone for assistance and the recording repeats the same message to call back. I'm recuperating from a leg injury, and I needed to get my order and get back home, so I had no choice but to hobble into the store. Didn't see any customers! Just the cashier doing absolutely nothing behind the counter. She had no clue why staff didn't intercept my call, but she'd call them now... That made no sense so I said, 'please just grab my order so I can be on my way.' C'mon Petsmart, get on the ball with your curbside service! read more

Well,what can i say about petsmart? One thing im glad they are finally in San Francisco because i dnt drive anymore,so now i can come here. Im fostering kittens and needed some kitten wet food, and at the time, Amazon didn't have chicken or the turkey, so i came here to get some, but just a little tip never give kittens any kind of sea food because it will give them tummie issues and very bad diarrhea and if you can give free grain it's better for them. But i was told by many cat rescuers that not all kittens have that issue, but it's better to be safe than sorry later with them having diarrhea. Reason why im saying this is because even though i told the store employee no fish of any kind what did they give me a box mix chicken and fish but i didn't see the box until i got home and i was piss because it cost me my time and money take a cab twice to get more chicken and turkey wet food and they only sell by the single cans. I spoke to the management about this problem and told her what happened she fixed the problem and gave me two cases and a $50.00 gift card and let me keep the sea food so i gave to the cat rescuer to feed the homeless cats. I would've given it a five-star, but i'm taking off two stars because of the inconvenience they cause me in going back and forth to make sure they had food that weekend and spending $80.00 to take 4 cabs even though they gave me a $50.00 it still doesn't cover the cost,but at least they fixes the problem quickly so thanks to the store manager who has been very helpful and her name was Alexandra Robleto. Thanks again to the management and a few of the employees who did help me out. Oh, and one more thing, please fix the phone issue and answer your phone because it just rings forever and also have your staff be more patient and listen to the customers. I was initially really glad to have this store open up in the city center structure but it's been a bit of a disappointment on several occasions. In theory, it should have a big selection and perhaps better pricing than some of the more boutique stores. But almost regularly I can't find the litter I'm looking for at this location. I've had experiences where it's been ordered for pick-up, confirmed, and then they don't have it in the store. I've also had experiences where the store shows stock and then they cancel my order. At this point, I almost assume the latter will happen. When I do successfully make it to the checkout, there is always a line and it moves slow. I'm not sure what is driving this, because my transactions specifically are quick and to the point. Yes, pricing is reasonable but in line with target and you may be able to find what you're looking for there if it's common enough. So my recommendation would be to come here more as a last resort, or if you need something and can't wait around for shipping. read more

I came in today curious and excited to view their selection of cats as I am looking to adopt! I approached a service worker and kindly asked who I should speak to regarding adoptions. She firmly said that she was the point of contact. She then proceeded to ask me if I rented or owned and stated I needed to present my mortgage paperwork. I stated that I live under my parent's roof and that the cat would be a birthday surprise/present for my parent. She insisted that the mortgage information was necessary to even see the cats. It was incredibly odd and her tone was passive. I contacted three other Bay Area pet smarts and they too agree that needing that prop of mortgage information is unnecessary. I was happy to provide proof of my residence as well as explain how I have cared for 4 other cats and a handful of dogs before. Yet, I wasn't able to get a word in after being shut down since I couldn't give my "proof of mortgage". I wanted to share my experience with the Pet trainer who was with Lily. She was a fabulous trainer. She taught my puppy Jakki to sit, lay down, settle down, drop it. I had her as a group for beginner and individual. I got better training one on one with individual with Lily better because I can talk to her what I needed and Jakki my puppy would listen better. Lily was sweet. She talked to me to make understand what I need to make me know what I was doing correctly. She gave me the right tools for my puppy Jakki not to pull. Lily told me to get a shorter leash to control her as well. It worked. She didn't pull and my arm and hand was saved from pain. I had a nice sessions with Lily. My dog adored Lily. I adopted my kitten here back in September/October when they had so much kitties up for adoption. I walked up to the window and saw this beautiful kitten named "chubbs" who was 4/5 months old at the time. The adoption fee was $250, which could be a lot compared to the local animal shelters, but I didn't care because she was adorable and seemed extremely friendly/cuddly. Turns out she is the best friend I have been missing in my life, she's extremely adventurous, loving, healthy, strong, soft, and kind. The adoption group that brings these kittens in is called "friends of Madera animal shelter" I learned that there are so many rescued animals coming in from the Fresno/stockton areas because they have so many animals they need to rescue and they bring them in to San Francisco to give them a new home over here. I also love that this pet smart has a huge open parking lot, huge variety of items I always need and can find here, the workers are extremely helpful and awesome, this is one of my favorite petsmarts in the city! If you can, please adopt a kitten here! It helps a lot and the kittens brought in are super sweet! read more

Terrible experience. I booked my dog's first grooming appointment at 5:00 PM and was told it would take 2.5-3 hours. By 7:30 PM, instead of picking up my dog, I received a call saying she had been taken to an emergency vet on the other side of the city--without notifying me first, even though the paperwork I signed stated that the owner should be contacted first. Grooming: I have taken my dog here about 4-5 times now for puppy bath/trim and full grooming. They have about 5-6 groomers. Idalis did the grooming that is pictured. I picked the 1 inch length with short teddy bear cut for the face. Time it took was about 2 hours. Also got nail grind for addition $15 and teeth brushing for $10? Overall I think he looks great except for a few spots where they had to shave him shorter but Idalis mentioned it prior that she would have to shave some spots shorter since she found matted areas in her pre-check (behind 1 ear and on the belly area). I would recommend checking out their grooming service and hotel service. Make sure to book ahead as they do get very busy !!! They try to do same day/walk-in appts but I believe it's quite difficult to get. Grooming and hotel services are downstairs and all other pet products are upstairs. The store has always been clean and organized whenever I have shopped around. The staff are friendly. read more

I just had a Horrible experience with their Grooming Department after I was ask to wait for 30 minutes and they were suppose to call me right after I checked in and signed myself on their sign up sheet No call was received after 40 minutes After taking my dog for nail grinding I was told that my dog ( Siberian Husky) was agitated and started kicking the groomer. I find it hard to believe that my dog acted this way We have gone to this store for more than10 times and there has been no problems in regards to my dog having any issues and we have been getting my dogs nail trimmed I felt I was turned away since whoever took my dog was on a rush to go home or go on her brake. Yes I would recommend PetSmart hotel! Not only they are affordable but also they have superb customer service! They took care of Raisin and Oatmeal very well! They already want to go back to Petsmart hotel. I can see they are missing their staff at PetSmart. Our kittens already want to go back to their cat carrier and go back to PetSmart after 5 minutes being home . It took them awhile to be accustomed to being home after inspecting every corner of the house. To PetSmart I will give them 10 out of 10 for their service and care to our kittens! This is for the self-wash only. We normally go to Pet Food Express on California but they closed. So went here and everything was fine, except the equipment is either really bad or broken. The rinse feature had no flow control (the flow knob did nothing). The water game out with such high pressure it would be like water torture to a small dog. I asked the employee if you could control the water flow and she said no. Another customer said that you can't (he's been there many times). I suppose it's OK if you have a big 100 pound dog but if your dog is on the smaller side (mine is 30 pounds) then the water pressure is just too much. I left without really giving my pup a bath.
