We were in the area for the day and had our dog with us, as we walked around we decided to stop in and take a look. The store was clean, well organized and had a lot of services available. There was the standard treats, toys, food and accessories, but there was also a self serve pet washing area, and a pet play area/ training area. Unfortunately, someone was training while we were there, but from what it looks like, when there isn't a training session you can let your dog into the area for a but. We ended up buying some treats and toys for our dog after walking around the store a couple times and letting him sniff around. High pressure sale to buy 3 get one free on dog chew with beef jerky in it. The sales person Lydia said I can return or if exchange for another product if my pet doesn't like it. My dog had diarrhea and vomiting all night after ingesting the collagen with beef jerky in it. I tried returning the remaining 3 of this product that made my dog sick. Told by another sales associate to get something else as exchange. I chose a product that was safe for my dog but this was $6.99 and the ones I was returning was$ 8.99. I was returning 3 and replacing with 3 that was less amount. Sales person and her supervisor, L said I would only get 32 cents back. Sales person said I can get a 4th one free. I said I wanted to an exchange and didn't want the 4th one. L said it's not the company's responsibility that my dog got sick on their product but it was my fault to give it to my dog. I asked to speak to a manager. L said that her manager, D was at the other location and I should go there to speak to him. When I asked when he will be at the location that I was having the issue then she said it's company policy that she cannot give out his schedule. She shoved back the 3 products that I was trying to return and slapped a customer service information card on the counter and told me to handle the matter with them. I told her to process the return and got $21 plus some cents back which is what my original intention was before getting talked into doing an exchange. I spoke to manager D and he immediately told me that L is one of his best employees. Later he did say he will talk to her about customer service. He said it's company policy that they cannot do a prorated exchange on the buy 3 get one free promotion. Beware about the fine print that they don't tell you about "the exchange " transaction on the buy 3 and get one free business. The company is not responsible if your dog gets sick on their product because every dog is different and it's your responsibility for giving it to your dog (even though they highly recommend this product) said by L. Their written policy honors exchanging something your pet will not eat but they did not today. I wont be returning. It's a great policy esp for those with finicky felines. I spend $70 each week on a senior hyperthyroid feline w pancreatitis for his treats/food/litter. Imagine what i was spending when i had 8 pets/fosters & an xl dog. The new middle aged clerk grey hair, baseball Cap, black rimmed glasses looked at me as if i was from Outer space when i asked if he could do the store credit of the cans. I found it rude and patronizing & won't be returning. I asked if am i supposed to put the left over food w added palatability (dehydrated chicken etc) back into can and hold for 7 days (or even policy states 30days) and they will accept the stinky food with no cover? I assumed it was cordial to rinse container out? Then he brought someone from back posing as manager "for 15 yrs" I was in the store 2 weeks ago w a friend and they did do this. But they chose gaslighting today. Not the right person and NOT ACCEPTABLE. I asked them to look at my phone number to see my weekly receipts. They didn't. I called the nice people at stonestown & they said we will take care of you. Mind you it was 3 containers about $7 exchange vs the $70+ I was at the counter to spend with supplies in cart. This is an illegal bait & switch.. you can not change policies overnight if it's written or bc a brand new clerk wasn't trained. it is going to BBB, google Ftc if they don't follow up. There are tons of shops & online is easier for me but if this is how they treat regular customers? I also have a long history at acc & shelters, local rescues & was a contractor for vet practices. I rescued and treated hundreds of animals & I ran a small pet biz for yrs... clients became friends and are still always asking for brands and where to shop for their pets. I serviced all socioeconomic backgrounds from wealthy to low income & elders. For many, the policy makes a difference. I am no longer comfortable sending these people to a store which gaslights and changes policies on a whim. i called stonestown to ask is it only their store and the manager said he will speak with them. corporate owned vet hospitals & the pet food industry are charging very high prices making pet ownership impossible for millions- this attitude today which I had not seen 2 weeks ago contributes to pet euthanasia crisis. I am making an issue about it bc i see the thousands of pets dumped and discarded for "lack of affordability". So they will need to follow up or I am escalating . read more

Had some time to kill & thought I'd look around Pet Food Express. I still miss the Gap which used to be at this location. From the outside it's impressive. Dedicated small, but free parking lot! Inside, so much more than pet food. There's an adoption zone, pet wash station, training pen, everything a dog could want from toys to gourmet food. Wait a minute, sign says Dog Food Only. Liars! There's a whole section inside to the left dedicated to cats. I guess the people have spoken & management listened. Me and my puppy have been to many pretty stores..... This is the first store with adequate staffing and pleasant personal. Thank you to all three people who helped me today. I order a 30 lb bag of kitty litter for delivery every few weeks and they are always on time and deliver it right to my door, which is so helpful since I'm old and not strong. Stopped by here for the self service dog wash and it is so convenient! You get a token for $18 but can also buy 3 get one free (which goes for the treats too!) so only about $13 a token. Then you have 25 min to use the tub with three choices of shampoo. There are waterproof collars if needed to secure your dog, towels and a waterproof apron for you. My only complaint is that the blow dryer only delivers cold air (the person manning the wash area had given me a heads up that was the case so no one accidentally burns their dog...). Would be nice if the air coming out was at least semi warm. Everyone was super friendly and helpful in making our first bath here easy and enjoyable! read more

What a great story with friendly staff. I have had a couple foster dogs and my recent rescue is so scared of baths it took me a looong time. This weekend I arrived at 7:15 and was there near closing and the staff member there Blake was sooo nice and helped me blow dry my dog since it was close to closing time. Blake also gave me tips on grooming him since he's a senior with some skin tags and mats. Great store with great staff! read more

I LOVE the DIY pet washing station. It is SO clean & perfectly designed. I lived in Japan & to me, it looks like whoever designed this area modeled it on Japanese baths which are fastidiously clean. I have always loved giving dogs baths & at PFE I don't have to wash towels and dry the entire bathroom after. The staff at PFE are ALL so nice, knowledgeable & helpful. Interesting fact: The owners were clients where I used to work & they are DEVOTED to animals. They had a senior dog at that time & they never came to events together bc they didn't want their dog to be alone in their later in life years. Called ahead to ask if they had any UTI help for cats in store, and by the time I got there the younger associate with the dark curly hair had set aside three different options for me at the register. I had just come from a very weird experience at petco so the fact that they did this and were so friendly and helpful was super amazing - thank you to them! I'm about to be a NEW fur-mom, to a 5yr old poodle rescue, who was rescued from an Asian Meat market, after she was used for "breeding" and considered no longer "useful" so they were going to sell her at the meat market and they cut her throat so she wouldn't make!! My heart broke when I heard all this and I wanted to adopt her (plan to change her name from Daisy to CoCo!). I am literally starting from ground ZERO! I was CLUELESS where to start.. so my partner Parke took me to Pet Food Express (Market St) and what a BLESSING to stumble upon meeting Manager Darryl! I don't know HOW he knew, but he could see my wide-eyed lost look and he immediately educated and guided me to the most IMPORTANT part to focus on... "what is the BEST FOOD for my new little one". I could tell he LOVES what he does and he educates himself on everything in the store! He was a Godsend guiding and instructing me on not only which food, but also HOW to mix the food! It is SO REFRESHING to have someone who genuinely CARES about your journey and not just trying to "sell" you something or ignore you if you ask too many questions! He was so great about making sure I got the "sale" items and any ongoing promotions or discounts, so my money would go further ... and even though I spent $500 (!!) I got some great deals on all the things my new little one needed. Then after that.. the FIRST toy I saw, was a yellow "Seahorse"!! Imagine that!! I wasn't looking for a seahorse, and felt that the FIRST toy would be important! It's a sign! This who know me KNOW how much I love seahorses! I am a customer of store since they open in my neighborhood. The staff used to be knowledgeable, approachable and very good energy but last few months. New staff especially young girls are the worst. They never welcome customers, always busy chatting with our staff, look unhappy and often give me attitudes. On my last visit, i was holding a heavy big bag of dog food. A casher girl give me a glance snd told me to wait until she finish pricing dog collar tags. She did not even offer me s space to put down a heavy dog food bag. She frustratedly throw a last piece of tag and finally start to scan my stuff AFTER 4 min. No one else did not come help me as well. Isn't there any "mature adult" manager in this location ?? Those girls (especially the dark hair one who is always frustrated on customers) definitely need to be disciplined. Need to learn people's skills. read more

I've only been in this location 2 times. The most recent time was to get my cat's some food. This location is small but clean and well organized. It also didn't smell like a pet store. The staff here didn't seem friendly and customer service oriented but it's ok since I already knew what I needed to get out of there. They have a small parking lot out front as well which was convenient. I usually go to PetCo on Potrero Hill and they almost always have a discount on the cat food I get whenever I come in. Pet Food Express did have a sale when you buy 3 you get the 4th free I believe. The cool thing about this is that it has a self service pet wash! Haven't seen that before. But you can go there and wash your pet and they will clean up your mess afterwards. Pretty cool idea! read more

5 stars for good inventory and an employee named Kevin who is what other people should look to as a model for good customer service. I typically frequent the mom and pop pet stores in the Castro for our muttface's needs but recently we needed a medical sleeve for her arm that would take to long to arrive via amazon so we called in to check the inventory there. Kevin answered and was so helpful and polite he almost made me rethink my phone phobia. He confirmed they had a item and we came in to pick it up along with a dozen other treat-related things muttface did not need. Kevin was there in the store offering assistance and baskets to shoppers when we arrived, then checked us out once we had everything. When I realized I had just paid for my entire order without using the giant coupon I had in my purse, he found a way to fix my mistake without so much as a sigh or eyeroll. It was around xmas time so it was pretty busy and I appreciated how thoughtful he was to do this. I actually started a Yelp review right there in the store (which I'm finally picking back up) just to say "Thanks Kevin for the great service!" and kudos to Pet Food Express for hiring people like that for this store. This place has great staff. They're super helpful. I occasionally come here to pick up goodies for my puppy. They stock everything from toys and food for your pets (cat, dog, small critters, etc.) They even stock dog friendly ice cream! I ran around to multiple stores to find some ice cream for my puppy in this heat wave & no one else stocked any, so super thankful I was able to snag some from here for my puppy! This review is for BEN! I was feeling on pet overwhelm and then I walked into the Pet Food Express on Market, and Ben immediately greeted me and recognized me from the other location that had closed. After that warm greeting, we talked about an array of cat subjects and yes, he knew his A to Z's on every topic: cat treats, sprays to get the cat to stop chewing on my artsy stuff, and finally about raw foods. I actually had heard a lot about a raw diet, but it seemed too labor intensive. The product he showed me in their refrigerator section was perfect. Stella has rejected most dog foods, loin lamb chops, roast beef, rack of lamb ,red alaskan salmon, tilapia,scrambled, poached and fried eggs, all vegetables , all dairy, all roots and tubers, peanut butter and most treats. I pulled into Pet Express Market St. thinking I'd try out frozen Just Food for Dogs' Venison, Beef and Lamb recipe, but found it contained sweet potatoes, which she hates . Two employees were nearby and I asked one, James, a pre-veterinary student, to help me. He introduced the currently popular types of dog food available. What followed was life changing. Most of you have probably at least once worried as days pass without your dog eating a morsel. James proved to possess a thorough knowledge of the considerations, benefits and shortcomings of every food product in the store. He spent about 45 min-1 ,hour with me, every second packeked with information. He me what to look for and to watch out for when purchasing items in each brand. Based on Stella's demonstrated disinterest in food, while being obviously hungry he suggested we try some freeze dried raw, some frozen raw, refrigerated and shelf stable raw, in addition to trying the pre-cooked Just Food for dogs. He suggested in particular, Primal Pronto Beef Stella and Chewy's Patties, and the KIWI brand 95% meat chub. Miracle of miracles, my furry little daughter was immediately attracted to both the smell and taste of all. I am so grateful to James for having invested the time studying animal nutrition, and for generously sharing that wealth with me. He differentiated foods and brands that provide complete nutrition in each serving, versus foods that have to be supplemented by adding vegetables, or if you and provided perspective on the many very different nutrional plans for dogs. James was knowledgeable AND articulate. He listed attentively, and was able to address Stella-Specific concerns. He empowered me to make informed, intentionally choices. James inspired light bulb moments . Stella is now eating with relish, when she is hungry, and I am with learning to stop hovering over her with food when I imagine she should eat. I hope James considers offering workshop sessions in animal nutrition, and how to shop for foods that provide your pet with a rounded nutritional feeding plan. James, thank you so much! We've shopped at numerous PFEs & every location had always been super helpful. Today, we went to the one on Market Street for some doggie coats to get our pup pups ready for cold wet weather. We found some very nice ones that fit very well & were water resistant as well. As we were getting ready to check out, I was staring at some probiotic concoction near the check stand. One of the associates, Philip, must have seen my perplexed look & ask if he could be of any help. We started to explain how for the last couple of years, we've been trying to solve our pup pup BiBi's bad breath problem. We've seen numerous vets & internists without any success of figuring out a cause. Philip told us to forget the probiotic, but to try a Dental Health powder made by BioBrillant. He said that it worked really well for his dog & that to give it a try for 2 weeks. He reminded us that if it doesn't work, it could always be returned to PFE for a refund & that goes for any & all products bought with them. We're excited to try this out & hopeful for success.
