A very nice store with a lot of products to choose from at good prices. They also have a pet hospital and an area to adopt cats which is always nice! The problem with this store is their customer service. The lady who served us was very cranky and rude. She didn't greet us and just had bad vibes about her. I feel like she doesn't like her job, which is fine but as a customer I felt like she was taking it out on me! There was also a lot of out of control dogs in the store barking like crazy! So it was hard to have a leisurely walk around the store, instead it led us to grab what we needed and head out asap! We will give the store another chance though as perhaps it was a one off. Update: can confirm this was not a one off! The employees are so rude! The woman who served us today was very moody and definitely hated her job. Our total was $5.10, my wife handed her a $10 bill to which the cashier replied very rudely "you don't have 10 cents?" And proceeded to roll her eyes. I switched to the Pet Hotel after a truly horrible experience with Toureen (you can see my experience with them if you're shopping for a boarding place). This place is a breath of fresh air compared to toureen. They were friendly, quick, helpful, and even called me during the weekend to let me know my pet was doing fine. They remembered her name after just being there 2 days and even hugged her as I picked her up. They really love their jobs and it shows. 5-stars! read more

This has become our regular place for boarding and even day care when we have long days (can't pick the dog up at her usual place by 6:30pm), and we have no complaints. They are really good to our dog and she just loves coming here. Overall, Petsmart would be perfect if they only had an outdoor potty area and if the store part carried better dog food--they have garbage grocery brand foods, and we just wish they would carry some higher quality foods (like Canidae). We still have to go elsewhere for food, but we do buy pretty much all our other pet supplies here. i defnitely recommend them for boarding or day camp--great hours, no hassle, and the best prices in the area. read more

Worst experience buying fish last weekend. Blond lady with glasses working in the fish dept was super rude. Never asked if we needed help,and when we did she had an attitude. She made no eye contact whatsoever. She then proceeded to tell us she didn't get her whole lunch break, and she was going to be there until close, and kept complaining about working there. Meh is a great way to describe this store. I usually frequent a locally owned small pet store and I guess I am spoiled. PetSmart doesn't carry many high end dog foods and many of their products are cheaply made. Beds and toys seem to fall apart very easily. Sure they aren't that expensive, but sometimes cheaper isn't better. There are tons of workers on the floor and they are always ready to ask if you need help. The problem is, they don't really have any answers. I think I will stick to my local experts for most of Dempsey's needs. read more

I'm here every few weeks either buying pet food, dog clothes or getting my dog groomed. The prices for everything are reasonable. My issue is their horrific customer service. 90% of the time the employees are beyond unpleasant and you can tell they hate their job. Recently I had the displeasure of having Kristina ring me up. She was one of the grouchiest employees I've ever seen with the worst people skills. She was so annoyed that I was using a few coupons. She kept barking "anymore coupons?" In the bitchiest tone. Other employees who have rang up my purchases before were awful too but she topped them all. Their grooming services are very cheap which is the only reason I use them. My dog has seemed annoyed whenever I've picked her up. The reason I keep coming back is their dog clothes are cute and cheap and look good on my dog. Definitely go to petco if you want to deal with more pleasant employees and higher quality brands. In my experience petsmart employees are on the same level as mcdonalds employees. read more

This review is for grooming only! I have been to a few groomers in the area. It is always the same story. I start out being satisfied and then find the work declines and the prices increase. I decided to try out PetSmart after a friend recommended it. I'm not a huge fan of these big chain places, but figured it was worth a try. Not only are the people who work in the grooming area friendly and professional, but they are also do a great job! I can always manage to get an appointment and they take grooming up until 6 or so at night, which is great for you office workers. My pup is always content when he comes home with his great haircut. I'm impressed and I have returned many times. Their prices are on par with any other grooming place and possibly even a bit cheaper. read more

I don't want to give too negative a review for this place, since it's one of only a few pet stores in the area. I keep fish but no other pets. The fish tanks here were horrendous. There were dead fish in about half the tanks - the workers didn't bother to scoop them out. When I pointed it out, the worker said, "oh, it's normal, it happens all the time because we have so many fish." Well ... scoop them out. No one wants to see that, and you know if fish died from disease, then other fish should NOT be eating it, or they'll get sick too. I told the guy I tend not to buy fish from tanks with dead fish in them and he couldn't have cared less. I actually walked away without having bought any fish at all. Many of the fishtanks were completely empty (suspicious - did they all die?), and I was still freaked out by the idea of buying a fish that might have been cannibalizing his sick brother in front of my very own eyes. read more

I have a cat, her name is Kitty, and I love her. She needed a place to stay while I was away over the holidays, and after a ton of research, I acted on a recommendation from a friend and decided the PetSmart PetsHotel would be her home away from home for a few days. Walking through a warehouse-y pet store was not the most welcoming, but the hotel part is a bit cozier. The concierge (yes, there is a concierge) was friendly, and allowed me to go back help deposit Kitty in the cats' room. Everything was clean, the cages (they're called cottages but that is not completely accurate) were spacious with two levels, and I was assured that cats receive two 20-minute individual cuddle/play sessions a day. So, I left Kitty in the hands of the PetsHotel. When I returned, the biggest indicator to me that Kitty had a good stay was that she was perfectly calm, and not even that super excited to see me. The concierge gave me a brief rundown on her activities over the past few days, and we went on our way. Kitty and I will be back. read more

Alas it was closed, but I could see a couple folks packing up inside. i knocked and made pathetic "phone" mimes with my pinky and thumb sticking out, on the other side of the glass doors. They got the message let me in and restored my phone to me. This review is mainly for the Hotel and Day Camp. We have a greyhound who LOVES to attend camp! She gets so excited as we drive into the parking lot. I was wary at first, being a big chain, and all, BUT I have been pleasantly surprised and happy! My greyhound is my baby, so I a VERY particular about where she goes and what she does. The staff has been very nice and very accommodating (especially love Kenya!) and they don't even mind my many calls to check on her. Sometimes it's tough to get into Day Camp bc it's so popular, so be sure to call as soon as you know you need it. I would give one more star IF: 1. they had an on-line reservation system 2. they had a way to watch/see your dog via the internet Overall, as far as the store, it's ok - we mainly shop elsewhere bc our dog and 2 cats only eat high protein/no grain high end foods which they do not carry. Also, I wish they would STOP SELLING ANIMALS! As a Vegan and a member of PETA, it saddens me greatly. I know, I shouldn't give my money to them via the Hotel and Camp, but I love my dog and there are so few options near us with longer hours. read more

Tuesday after Memorial Day I go in to take advantage of the sale on dog toys. While there I also see two collars and a bag of Chinchilla food on Clearance. With a gold fish bowl, 2 toys, a retractable leash and those three items I go to check out. First the collars show up as "removed from inventory." The check out woman kindly explains that because they aren't in the computer I can't buy them (they are $2.97 each.) I joke that she should just give them to me. Then I just give up. Next the chinchilla food--SAME STORY! I am now annoyed. She offers to call the store manager. I offer to have my stuff put aside so I don't hold up the line. Lisa the manager shows up: same story. I can't buy the items. I say, "why don't you put yellow caution tape up over the items you can't sell??" "Sorry, sorry, excuse, excuse." This review is for the Grooming area. We've been going here every month for about the past year and a half. We will be looking for a new groomer now though. First the good. There are some very dedicated and professional people that work in the grooming area at the Alewife Petsmart and they are super nice to the dogs. Some groomers, like Nicole, are better than others. We have a small dog and they do a great job on the quality of the cut and grooming. We pay about $67 each time, which I think is fairly average - not too pricey but not cheap either. Now the bad. They have a hard time staying on schedule. We've had a few instances where it has taken 4 or 5 hours to groom the dog and other times where it is 2-3 hours. It makes it very hard to try to schedule around this when it is so inconsistent. They also don't do a good job of letting you know if they are running behind. I'd rather have then call me an hour before the appointment and either ask to reschedule or tell me to come later. It's really inconsiderate for a service-oriented business to have you drop your dog off for a 3PM appointment and then tell you at 7:45 that the dog is still not finished because they started late. We really like Nicole and I wish she just worked in her own pet salon but will look for another, more personalized grooming salon in the future. read more

Pet Hotel Review Only During our week vacation in August we left our girl kitty here. We had a pet sitter for our other two, but since Mia requires twice daily meds, we had to leave her where she could get that. Normally, we use the one on Route One in Saugus, but they were full up! A good indicator a a Pet Hotel is your pets demeanor when you pick them up, and Mia was happy as a clam in a shell! She got her meds (I could tell if she didn't), and was quite healthy and happy looking. The service here was as top notch as the Saugus location, so that made us happy, too. This place is huuuge and has just about everything you could possibly want for your pet at very competitive prices. The staff are friendly but not particularly knowledgeable, but they will happily help you find stuff. If you have a pet and need stuff this is one of your best choices in Greater Boston. I want to love Petco more for the constant donations they give to the Animal Rescue Leagues but their stores are filthy pits. By comparison PetSmart is clean, organized, and well-lit. They even have a good (not great) selection of hippie animal food. You know the stuff without all the crap you yourself wouldn't even eat. The stuff you should be feeding your pet if you really loved it. read more

Terrible experience and I won't be going back. This relates to the grooming salon and the pet hotel. This is too bad because in the past, my pup's stay here has been good. I dropped my dog off for a single night of boarding at the Pet Hotel and a grooming session. When I dropped him off I was told he'd be groomed that afternoon. I called the next day before I picked him up to confirm pick up time and was informed that their power had been out all that morning and therefore my dog had not been groomed, even though I was told he'd been scheduled for the grooming the day before, not the day of the power outage. I was not called or informed about any of this. I was told that the person who'd checked me in had been mistaken about the day of his grooming appointment and that they were sorry I'd been overlooked when the grooming salon called to let people know appointments were canceled due to the power outage. But hey. These things happen, and I said I understood. They offered a discount at his next grooming session. I asked if it would be possible to get him groomed the next day, and in that case I'd extend his stay one night and pick him up after grooming. I was told it was and I made the extension and new grooming appointment. An hour before I was supposed to pick my dog up I received a call saying the grooming salon was too busy and my dog was too stressed out, so they wouldn't be grooming him. But they offered to bathe him at the hotel, so apparently his stress was only a concern at the front of the store. I declined and went to pick him up immediately because I don't like to hear my dog is "too stressed by being boarded and the grooming salon." When I arrived they again offered the same discount on a future grooming service that I'd already been offered for the two previous screw ups. I asked why my dog was upset, and was told he wasn't exactly upset. He was stressed, except okay not exactly stressed, maybe excited. The answers and information were conflicting and did not make sense. What it sounded like was they had overbooked their grooming salon and decided to cancel my dog's appointment without admitting as much, especially since I could get no explanation of why he was stressed/excited/anxious, or how an excited golden retriever is anything out of the ordinary. He has been boarded and groomed at this location multiple times with zero previous issues. His "report card" from his stay talked about how happy and well-behaved he was. As I said we won't be going back. I understand things happen, but this went wrong from start to finish, and I was told conflicting, confusing, and upsetting reasons for a series of screw ups. read more

Took our 2 babies (each 3 lb Yorkies) for 2 nights......they stayed in the same room and had doggie daycare each day. Workers are very nice and accommodating. We had very specific instructions on feeding, and they typed it all in the computer. They even asked us if we needed to separate them while feeding, which was a nice thing to ask. Shows they know dogs. However, when we picked them up, they both smelled like pee. Guess we should have had them take a bath. We also did not receive a written evaluation for each of them. With other PetSmarts, we received a report card. When I paid, I selected the option to have my receipt emailed to me. I did not receive that email. Also, PetSmart was running a promotion where we would receive a coupon for a free future doggie daycare with an overnight stay. I assumed that because we had 2 dogs with overnight stays we would receive 2 coupons. But we only received one coupon, which wasn't clearly spelled out. All-in-all, the workers are really nice, but we've been to better PetHotels at other PetSmarts. read more

The ratio of floorspace to stuff-I'd-want-to-buy is very low. So not a great place for me. I've been there looking for dog stuff and hamster stuff. They do have a LOT of fish, and a lot of fish gear. So maybe try it if you have a fish? (But read Stephanie L's review first). The staff are not helpful and they are often hard to find. The animals they sell make me sad. But given how much room they have, I find it hard to understand why they don't carry the stuff I'm looking for. Lots of dress-up clothes for dogs, but a weirdly small selection of dog toys, for example. I've never tried the grooming/hotel, so can't comment on that. read more

Even though I am closer to the PetSmart groomers in Everett, given their reviews, I refuse to entrust them with my dog. I encourage anyone who has a pet they want treated to specifications and/or who may have issues you want handled sensitively (e.g., health concerns) to bring them to this specific PetSmart because they: a) appear to actually care (and like!) the pets they service b) are friendly to me and my dog c) are attentive and caring when I provide relevant health-related information about my dog to them (e.g., seizures, tender hips) and adjust grooming to fit his needs (e.g., use more scissors than machine to cut his hair to accommodate his height and intermittent pain) d) they always follow my instructions and leave my pet exactly as I ask! No bows or crazy things in his hair, cut just the way I want, and he always looks happy and smells delightful when I pick him up, letting me know again that they truly do care. As uncool as this place is on a shallow read, we are steady customers. Our dog is now two years old and gets her nails done there (she needs no other grooming). The grooming staff is amazing there, and they use their point-of-sale terminal to store notes that say things, in our case such as "Be good to this dog, she's great! I (heart, heart, heart) her!" to ensure that her demonstrated suavetée is reinforced by whomever provides her next nail grinding. #blessed We regularly get toys and dog costumes there. The prices are low and some looking around often finds an item or two of surprising quality. The workers continue to manifest a real fondness for animals. I wish they carried Merrick dog food. That is the one we've found best, and we have to procure it at the other large chain. read more

It's your standard big-box pet store. Pros: They do adoptions from the MSPCA instead of selling cats/dogs. Awesome. The staff is generally nice and they try to be helpful The conditions for the birds and fish are generally better than most chains (though still not up to snuff by any means). Cons: They sell parrots instead of adopt, with too-small cages, to under-informed customers. Only one of the managers has any bird sense at all. They stock only crap food for birds, and the dog/cat food isn't much better. Place is understaffed. I've waited around in the live crickets/fish section with three other customers for 15 minutes before I finally had to go ask someone at the register to help us. She called for an employee, who showed up 10 minutes later. Not great service. The staff is very young and mostly very ignorant about proper animal care. Overall, *this location* is not as bad as most chains (and some independent stores), but it's nowhere near great. I stop in occasionally to pick up a particular toy my conure loves, or crickets for the lizards, but that's about it. read more

As any pet owner can attest, entrusting your furry one to strangers is a scary prospect. I am so glad to have found the Pet Hotel at PetSmart. When I need to leave town, Ringo, the cutest dog in the world, gets his own vacation here. The staff here is what makes this place so great. I was originally skeptical about leaving my pup in a big chain place like this, but as soon as I dropped him off the first time, I knew he was in good hands. Kenya, especially, is fantastic. She has a bubbly, are-you-really-this-happy personality that immediately puts me--and Ringo--at ease whenever we arrive. All of the staff members really appear to be "dog-people". While this should be a given, it's not necessarily. They have a great manner with Ringo and all of the other dogs. The doggie day camp option is AWESOME. For $22 a day, Ringo gets to play with other pups ALL DAY. All day! It's a lot of extra money, sure, but it's worth it in my opinion. I get him a couple of days of camp, and he comes home pooped and pleased. The only thing that would make this place better would be if they had video streaming, at least in the playroom. They allow you to call in to the "bone booth" to speak with your pup. Love a good play on words, but I am a person and my dog is a dog. Sooooo, talking on the phone doesn't do much for either of us. If I could check in online with my little guy, this place would be PERFECT. Or maybe they could send a picture once per stay? I'd love to see Ringo in action while I'm away! I used to not know the difference between PetCo and PetSmart. This PetSmart's staff are so much better then PetCo's. I have had great service every time I am in, which is often with a new puppy. I also really like those working in the Banfield Hospital. I have spent a ton of time in retailers and this one knows how to do it. My dog, Chip recently finished a beginners training course here. It lasted for about 6 weeks long and we had a trainer named Martia. I think it was a fantastic course and really helped Chip to learn and practice the rules of basic obedience. I would definitely recommend visiting there for training because there are such nice trainers and they can target a bad behavior and eliminate it before it gets out of hand. My pup went through a 3 stage class with Erin Brackett who is the regional trainer and she is awesome. She really gets the parents and dog into shape. (lol) If you want your dog trained via the clicker method, she is the one to go to. The grooming salon (Adriana) is awesome. The first cut was a bit short on my Coton but after that, it was perfect. Banfield is great since you can opt for a yearly plan which covers all preventive shots which is significantly lower than anywhere else. I go to Merwins along with Banfields. The overall staff is a bit young though. Sometimes they might not even know where some items are, but they do try and are very courteous. Last of all, they always send you coupons which saves you lots of money. I'm not a big fan of Petco but Petsmarts is a solid B+ in my book. read more

Some very good, some poor. We have Standard Poodles and have been using this store for years. The main store is excellent, directing us to the correct aisles, cheerful at the register, helping carry heavy bags to the car. On the other hand, grooming is hit-or-miss. Staff changes often. I got there at 7:50 on morning for an 8 o'clock app't but had to wait to go in until 8! It was cold! I opted for the works, $139, but the cut was awful. The legs were not tapered--they looked like wings!--and worse, were not symmetrical. The head was poorly shaped, the face not clean-shaven, with tufts of hair. And the nails were not cut, which had happened before, so I specifically mentioned it. Very poor job. Never again. read more

I think Chico would agree, he almost seems happier when he stays at the Petshotel than when he's with me. We adopted our dog in March of this year and were searching high and low when our vacation in June came around. Because we are fairly new to Massachusetts and had used PetSmart Pet Hotel in Texas and had great experiences, we opted to board our dog at the location in Cambridge for 8-days while we were away. When we booked her reservation, we ensured that we booked the best of the best, opting for a private room with a cot and TV, puppy play time every day, ice cream socials, and 1:1 time. When our trip came around and we dropped her off, we were more than emotional, but she seemed excited to be there. During our trip, we called every day to check on her and each time sat on hold for about 10-minutes before speaking to someone. Once we were on the phone with staff, they always gave great updates and let us know she wasn't eating too much, but it was likely because of a new environment. Fast forward a week, we landed in Boston and immediately drove to Cambridge to pick her up. Once they brought her out, the smell of urine was COMPLETELY overwhelming. She smelled, the bed we dropped her off with smelled, her toys that she brought smelled - it was awful. The worst part was she was MUCH more thin than what she was when we dropped her off. We didn't know what to think, what to say...so we left and took her home. We immediately gave her a bath and the water was pouring off her dark brown. It was obvious that she wasn't taken out enough to go to the bathroom and was likely left for hours on end with no bathroom break whatsoever. In the bath, she did everything she could to drink the water - she was dying of thirst. It's been about 4 days since we've been back and currently, we are nursing her back to health from the kennel cough she picked up while boarded, and the weight she lost. While I realize kennel cough isn't the fault of PetSmart, the weight loss and bathroom breaks ARE. If a dog isn't eating, it's up to the caregiver to do whatever they can to get them to eat: give them wet food, give them a bone, or call the owner and explain how dire the situation is. In regard to the bathroom breaks, there is just no excuse for something like that. If dogs are going to be covered in their own urine upon pickup perhaps a complimentary grooming would be nice, instead of the customer having to add it on at an additional cost. I'm so incredibly disappointed. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this location. If you need boarding, find someone you trust with your fur babies. Only after 4 days is my sweet dog finally acting like she was before we left her. read more

She did a nice job grooming my cavalier. She was friendly and attentive. I will definetly use her if I have an emergency outside of the bi-monthly grooming session for my dog. I have high standards for my dog. He is my life, period. I must make sure that he has the food he needs, so this might result in me having to try the food that I buy him(after I buy it of course). I bought BLUE Life Protection Formula Adult Dog Food. At first I was skeptical, seeing as usually I make my dog his own food, but I was pleasantly surprised. I tasted a slight undertone of healthy jerky(a good sign in the dog food biz), and strong amounts of chicken that will make any dog, even ones as picky as my drama king Mr. McFurr. When I tried it it had a smooth but rich texture that melted in my tongue, as well, I'm sure, will also melt on a dogs tongue. I highly recommend this mix to your dog. As the owner of two furbabies, my husband and I go to PetsMart quite often. This location is OK - I LOVE looking at the kitties they have at the adoption center, and I have seen a lot of traffic for their clinic/boarding facility (never used it myself however). They have a pretty wide selection of products but they are often out of stock of things we regularly buy. The cashiers can be a little standoffish but once you are a "regular" they get a lot more smiley! I do wish they had a better variety of cat toys for my spoiled kitties though. EDIT: I want to add an addendum to this review since we took a dog training class here. I'm adding a star, because we had a pretty good experience, but I'll say this: it all depends on your trainer! We went to a basic obedience class when it became clear that our dog had never been trained, even in the basics like "sit", etc. Our first trainer was nice enough, and I thought pretty compentent. She did, however, cancel quite a few classes and then got a job and left in the middle of the course. I'm definitely not crapping on her for getting a more lucrative job! But it did kind of throw a wrench in our training class. Our second trainer I LOVED. He was so funny and so good with the dogs, and he was clearly a lot more experienced a trainer. He pointed out a few places the previous trainer had overlooked, and he basically let us start over, and we could pick and choose what to work on. Eventually, our class that had initially had about 5-6 dogs in it was down to just 2, and the other people went on vacation, so it was basically a private class at that point. Then, the other trainer got a new job! Again, not faulting him AT ALL, because I'm sure PetSmart doesn't pay that well, but I really didn't want to start AGAIN with a new trainer who had a new style. Luckily, our trainer's last day was also the day our dog "graduated"! The 6 week class ended up being about 12 weeks because of all the cancellations and summer plans. We started in July and didn't end until the very end of September! But, essentially, we got a lot of extra attention and a lot more classes then we paid for. I think the training is good for the price, but it really will depend on who your trainer is and scheduling is definitely very "loose". We took Rose and Felix this morning for a walk in treatment of nail trimming and teeth brushing and everyone in the salon was so helpful and happy to see us. Store Leader Jeni DeJesus and Eleanor were great. read more

This review is for the doggie day care. All the workers are friendly and genuinely seem like they like to be around dogs. My puppy loves it here she literally jumps out of the car and runs in. I highly recommend doggie day care here if your dog is good with other dogs. The pricing is very reasonable and they try to make it more fun for the pups by having parties once a month. My dog comes home very tired and very happy which is great! read more
