I've been with Petro for 3 years now. I thought this company was decent. I didn't really pay attention to the home oil prices until recently when my bill more than doubled. When I looked into the price gouging, I found that the average price of home oil in the state of Rhode Island (2/28/2022) is 3.489 yet Petro is charging me 4.999 a gallon. When I called to ask about the price, they told me that the 4.999 represents the current market price (lie). I will not do business with Petro again. read more

DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY. CONSIDER SATAN BEFORE PETRO!!!! In one word, UNETHICAL! I used this company to install the piping for a new generator, which was not completed for months, and I seemed to be unable to contact the right person to get the job done until I withheld payment. They then contacted me. Of course they did!!! The generator installation was contingent on my changing oil and propane delivery to Petro, which I did. Upon renewal, under the guise of price protecting me, I renewed effective November 4, with an oil price cap of $3.359 TO PROTECT ME FROM RISING COSTS!!!! Note that I paid $2.77 per gallon in October. My next fill-up, just days after signing the new contract, I was charged $3.359 per gallon. Please note, that the average price in Massachusetts at that time, was $2.44 while I was already paying $2.77. By signing their agreement, I gave them the right to charge me 92 cents more per gallon than the rest of the state. Additionally, their annual contract for one cleaning was $399.00, $100 more than my previous company. A few honest adjectives, SNEAKY, DISHONEST, DIREPUTABLE, UNSCRUPULOUS. And now I'm stuck in this agreement until November. This is dirty-dealing at its best, and should be illegal. read more

I have to give credit when credit is due. I recently purchased my home. My boiler was installed less than a year ago and is still under service warranty by Petro. Last week when temperature dropped, the heat didn't come on. I was worried about calling Petro due to all the negative reviews. Today, I called the 800 number and spoke to a CS Rep who offered little assistance. I was disappointed and was sure that my issue wouldn't be addressed but I didn't give up. I then called the a Warwick location already expecting bad service. I was pleasantly surprised about the excellent service provided. From the initial call with the knowledgeable and patient Customer Service Rep, to the absolutely AMAZING Technician (Pedro) who was immediately dispatched to my home. Seriously, he knocked at my door within a few hours from my call to Petro. I am impressed to say the least. Petro, the CS Rep (didn't get her name - sorry) and Pedro (the Technician) all deserve this positive review. They really do. I am looking forward to seeing consistent good service to sign up for regular oil service in the future. Thank you Technician Pedro. You are the best. read more

If there is no star i can give them and they ripped you. They promise something else and deliver some else. Presently charging $1.40- $1.50 above cash and carry price. Not sure how they justify that large of a spread (I have a price ceiling plan), but it would actually be less costly to break the contract, pay their penalty fee, and go elsewhere. Also, very long wait times for any recent calls. The person who helped me did what she could, but did not seem to have very much autonomy to offer anything. She was pleasant enough, and provided a small credit to the account. Still, it was a drop in the ocean. read more

This is the note I wrote to them to (attempt) to finally end my relationship with them. I am paying my final bill today. Please do not contact me again. I have had an extremely frustrating experience with your company. I paid my bill in full last spring and requested that my account be terminated because I was moving to Portland, Maine. Since then, I have received monthly invoices with sums of $240 or $480. I have emailed and called several times to clarify that I was no longer a customer, and each time customer service seemed to have no idea why I was receiving these invoices or how to stop them. And now, the final indignity. I accepted a promotion to join Petro last fall. I paid all of my bills on time or ahead of time, and now I must pay you back the $100 from over a year ago. I do not approve of your practices as a company, and I hope you reform. read more

So I have always lived in Rhode Island but never had oil heat. Recently moved to East Greenwich and got oil heat. Petro has excellent marketers, flyer after flyer in our mailbox.. finally signed up with them and bought a service contract as well. REALLY unhappy with the service so far and feel like all the effort was on the front end and the marketing. Even thinking about eating the cancellation fee because i am so frustrated. Yest one hour hold to make appt today for 8-12. We have been a Petro customer since 1996 and have a full service contract. We had problems with out hot water driven heating system. I first called on 12/19/20, and although they sent someone the next day, he wouldn't come in the house because he "didn't do hot water heaters". He said that he would have the plumbing person call. After three weeks and a total of five calls by me to find out when they would get someone over, I still haven't heard back from them. I called again and wanted the email of a senior manager or a CX rep, but they wouldn't give it to me. Instead, they connected me to a very rude plumbing manager who insisted that I needed a new hot water heater without having someone come out and look at the system. When I mentioned that the furnace guy said that all I needed were new anodes in the tank, the rude man on the phone asked me why I would replace anodes on a tank that I was getting rid of. I never said that I would replace the tank without someone coming over to evaluate my system. This is not the way to treat a loyal 24 year customer. I am very disappointed. Nothing has been fixed or evaluated even after calling Petro over a three week period. What had happened to this company. read more

Very disappointed in Petro with their lack of transparency and their parts pricing markup. We had purchased their basic service plan in June 2019. At that time they came out to check the system and did some work and replaced an expansion tank. We called 2 weeks ago when the heat would not turn on. They said they would come out and it would be covered under the service plan. The service tech confirmed there was too much air in the system which caused a backflow leak. We had not used the heat since they had last serviced it so they must not have bled the air out the last time which caused this issue. He went out to get parts, but my wife was not told of any cost for parts, no conversation of what was needed to be serviced (or at least usually a tag is left on the boiler to show what was fixed and by whom), and no mention of a cost when he left. A bill came in and two Taco air vent coin vents were needed (pricing at Home Depot about $10 each) but we were charged $67 each and a Watts combination backflow preventer and feed pressure regulator (cost at Home Depot $92) but we were charged $666. No breakdown of parts cost vs install fees. I called when we got the bill, and the customer service rep was surprised that we had their basic service plan as he said, "it was not a good plan so we discontinued it recently" (we got the plan 4 months ago and had not been notified it was discontinued and it is still listed on their website as of this date as a service plan option). Even with their elite service plan, he explained the parts would not have been covered. I understood that but was surprised at the 400-500% price markup on parts. The rep said, "the availability of parts and installation would factor into the pricing" and he said "You could have installed the parts yourself to save cost". I asked for a breakdown of the parts cost vs. install fees and he started giving numbers, so I asked for them in writing. He wrote back a few days later saying he is "unable to find a further breakdown of the price of your repairs. What I have been told is that all work is done on a flat rate basis and is not broken down further." Further emails and requests to speak to a manager have remained unanswered. The service tech was not gone long so the parts were readily available locally, and it took less than an hour for him to install. Overall, Petro's pricing is very unethical, and that they would disparage their own service plan says a lot. It does not give much confidence in the company if they are not even confident in their own practices. Very disappointed by them not being upfront about how much the service would cost before going out to get the parts and then the huge markup in parts price, hiding what the costs are. I hope that Petro will see this and be able to fairly resolve this. If not, I will go to the BBB. read more

Hi Yelp, Even though you explain on your site with a video why some reviews are not recommended, it makes no sense that you chose to only display one star reviews. The "not recommended" reviews were mostly very informative and explained well many customers experience. The one star reviews were informative also, but your choice of display did not represent the overall experience of customers. As a site that reviews customer service you should review your own. Petro is HORRIBLE. Their pricing is OUTRAGEOUS at over 150% higher than the small local companies. Petro claims that you (the consumer) are paying a premium for their "Full Service." The service provided is not even close to the product they offer. If you're smart, stay far away from Petro and call the local guy for oil when you need it. Petro is charging over $3.55/gal as a variable rate and here is a pricing for their competitors: http://www.newenglandoil.com/massachusetts/zone6.asp?x=0 The only positive note that I have is that their service guys that come fix the burner are always very friendly and helpful. read more

Just not the way to do business. My air conditioning outside unit was making a rattling sound. I set up an appointment to which I would be charged almost $100.00 for a service tech. to come out and identify the issue. The person came and was polite however spent about $20.00 before telling me it may be cheaper to replace the entire unit. I told him I would like a quote for repairing the unit AND replacing the unit to see which would make more sense. He stated he totally understood... took down all the parts information and told me I would get a call with quotes. I did receive a call.... to tell me they had to send a sales technician out to give me a cost to replace the unit. Sounded strange considering the service guy did not mention anyone else needing to come out to give a replacement quote and had taken down all the model information. Still, I went along and set up an appointment. 3 weeks go by before my next appt, I still had not received the quote to repair the unit but thought maybe the "sales" guy would have it. WRONG, he showed up and took down the same information on the unit the other guy had and said it would be about 9k he thought. Not exactly an exact quote.... he also said he could not provide the repair cost and to call the 800 number again. Well, I did and have been waiting for a "field" supervisor to call me back ever since. To this point, I have no repair quote and the only replacement quote I have was the "around 9k" the guy said when he was here. No official quote emailed or anything. Not even wasting time calling back customer service as all they say is "a supervisor will call you back". I thank goodness I am only out $100.00 to these people. I can only imagine if I would have hired them to do the job. Horrific way to do business read more

Horrible customer service even after several mistakes on their end. We will be looking for a new service provider when our contract is up! Buckle in kids, this is kind of a long story!! On Friday Jan 30th we had an appointment scheduled for our annual system tune up, an appointment we had to schedule back in Sept because they were booked up so far in advance. This was a few days after the first blizzard we had but our driveway was completely shoveled and salted down to the bare cement. We do have a narrow driveway with retaining walls but have been able to get a variety of work vans and trucks in our driveway with no issue before. Tony, the tech they sent out, called us from outside with concerns of being able to pull into our driveway. My husband went outside to help guide him in the driveway but Tony felt he was unable to pull in. We contacted our neighbor to get permission to let him park in her driveway which is wider then ours or he could have parked on the street. Tony instead drove away and we moments later had a voice mail from dispatch stating that our driveway needed to be plowed first and reschedule our appt. We immediately called back upset because time was taken off of work to be home for this appointment and the tech did not really make an effort to park his van. Per usual when you get a call center the first rep we spoke with wasn't able to do much and told us that the next avail appt wasn't until March!!!! We asked to speak with a supervisor who of course wasn't available at the moment but was told they would call us back asap. A few hours went by and no call, so we called back again. This time the supervisor was gone but this rep was able to reschedule us for 2 weeks out. We rescheduled the appt and requested again that a supervisor contact us because we were very unhappy with what happened. Flash forward 2 weeks and it is now Friday Feb 13, we never did get a call back from a supervisor and now our 8 - 12 appt window has come and gone and no one ever showed up. Call Petro again and the rep mentions that in the notes it states a supervisor called us. . . ummm nope! Also tells us that our appt for that morning was never actually scheduled! We again demand to speak to a supervisor and conveniently both supervisors are at lunch at the same time and we are told we will receive a call back in about an hour. This doesn't happen so we are forced to call back again and surprise. . . . no supervisors are available. We finally get a call back from a supervisor named David who was more interested in pressuring us to schedule next years appt for the summer now "so this doesn't happen again" instead of rectifying the current problem we are having. He rescheduled us again to today Feb 18th and assured us that a tech would be at our house between 8 & 8:30am this morning to do the tune up. Well it is now 9:30am and no one has arrived. My husband spoke with David again and apparently our appointment was cancelled, which we were never notified of, but he was going to reschedule it and someone would be here within the hour. We shall see. This is now the 3rd day that we have had to take time off of work for this appointment that they keep screwing up and all we've gotten is half-hearted apologizes. Up until now we had never had an issue with Petro and were content with our service but the lack of follow through and customer service has put a very bad taste in our mouth and we will be researching other providers to give our business to. We both have worked in customer service for years and were appalled at how this was handled and I highly doubt we will be renewing our contract with Petro. read more

After I posted my Yelp review I was contacted by a manager from Petro, then Jenna M confirmed the contact on Yelp. The response to my review necessitates that I give the details of the most recent situation with Petro, so here are the details: On January 24th, 2015 I noticed that my oil tank was below 25% full. Now, I have been contracted with Petro to be filled automatically based on my usage, but hadn't received a fill-up in a while. Since the weather reported that we were due for the first (which turned out to be many) major snowstorm of the year, I called Petro and asked that they FILL (that means make 100% full) my oil tank. The customer service representative verbally agreed that my tank would be FILLED at a price of $2.989 per gallon (mind you that is significantly higher than Petro's competitors at the time, with some charging as low as $2.20 per gallon, but I was contracted in and reluctantly accepted the higher price). I was told by the representative that my delivery would come within 48 hours, which it did. On January 26th, 2015 the Petro delivery truck showed up to make the delivery. I saw him in my driveway, starting to fill my tank, but I noticed he stopped rather quickly and began packing up. I went to check my oil tank and realized that it was not FULL as agreed upon. I ran outside to the delivery person and said that my tank wasn't filled and that the customer service representative agreed to fill it. The driver gave me a line of BS: "They said we can't deliver more than 100 gallons today due to demand." And he left. I couldn't care less about the demand. When you make an agreement to deliver something to a customer, you should deliver. If demand was so high, the customer service rep shouldn't have agreed to fill my tank. I let it slide. I had my oil so my house would stay warm and went out and bought an ELECTRIC space heater as well. Now fast forward to what prompted me to post my Yelp review. I received an "auto delivery" on March 6th, 2015. They filled my tank at $3.789 per gallon. No, that's not a typo. In less than 2 months, their prices were 27% higher and still exorbitantly higher than their competiton. I was outraged and called them to ask about their inflated price. The "customer SERVICE" rep, like the oil truck driver, gave me another lesson in economics and told me that was the legitimate price based on the metrics they used and that I was out of luck. Instead of letting it slide this time, I decided to post a Yelp review. I was tired of being walked on by a company that I give my hard-earned dollars to. Not surprisingly, Petro does seem to care more about their online reputation more than when a customer of 2 years calls to complain. The next morning I was contacted by a manager who told me that they saw my review and wanted to discount the oil due to my dissatisfaction. They reduced the price down to $3.41 or something per gallon. I was pleased with the reduction. I still overpaid for the oil, especially if you consider the fact that if they had FILLED my tank on January 26th as agreed upon, I would have paid the $2.989. But it is true, I am indeed happier to now only be overpaying by .42 cents a gallon instead of overpaying by .80 cents a gallon. Since loyalty cannot be purchased and I believe businesses should do the right thing at all times (not only after a negative online review is posted), I will thank Petro for reducing my bill for this month but will maintain my previous review of the company and how it treats its customers. If this company wishes to survive in the smallest state, in which word of mouth gets around VERY quickly, change will have to come internally, and from the top down. read more

I wouldn't ever recommend anyone to use petro for oil service the highest most outrageous prices close to $4 a gallon. Oil prices private company for comparison $1.80 to $2.04 and for someone to come out and clean filters on boiler $150 is going rate. NEVER RECOMMENDING THEM! read more

My parents have been customers of Petro since the early 1970s. The automatic delivery service has been horrible recently. Early January of this year, the oil tank was empty, even though they are on a budget plan and should receive automatic delivery. Also, there is a credit on their account so it's not a billing issue. I called the business office many times and spent hours on the phone, only to finally receive oil 12 hours later. And remember, there's a credit on the account of customers with having accounts with Petro over 40 years and this is the service they receive- a 12 hour wait on a freezing day. Surprisingly, it happened again today. Unbelievable! Again, no problems on the account, it's just Petro didn't deliver...Again! The temperature is 20 degrees outside! When you call customer service, the representative is pleasant but no one can fix the problem. I'm seriously considering a change. It's time to say good bye to Petro after a long long business relationship. read more

I gotta add to the sourpuss ratings here. I travel for work, and that I can't help. Returning earlier this month, around the 11th, I called to schedule a boiler cleaning and tuneup. They told me the next available appointment was March 10, 2016. Yes, twenty-SIXteen. I expressed my sentiments, to no avail. It's like cable or FIOS, if you don't keep switching, you pay more, and the initial good service honeymoon period wears off quickly. The other major companies were about the same, though I have never been unable to schedule preventative maintenance until now. Checking the other reviews, I see I'm not alone, if that's any comfort. Should the system fail, due to lack of maintenance, when I'm away, and maybe cause damage, I bet they will try to wiggle out of it, as there must be some fine print. Should this happen, Petro will discover they are messing with the wrong cowboy....... read more

I have been a Petro customer for over 8 years now, I am so happy with their service. Always prompt, clean and professional. I recently had an issue with my chimney cap and was happy to see that Petro also has chimney services. I called and was given an appointment within a week, the appointment happened to fall on a day that we were having a bad storm heavy rain and winds. I thought for sure they would have to reschedule, they came as promised and discovered the problem was much worse than we had imagined. The exhaust pipe from the furnace had actually detached from the chimney and prior company that had installed a liner had done it completely wrong. They installed a new liner, exhaust pipe and chimney cap that very afternoon in an awful storm. I was expecting a huge bill and to my surprise the bill was way under what I had imagined. I will be forever grateful for Petro and their high standards of workmanship. I highly recommend them. read more

STAY FAR AWAY! I never like to write negative reviews but this one deserves it. Petro is in the business of convincing customers that they are getting great value and protection by signing up for their service agreement contract. Then they fail to follow through with their promises and when you try to cancel the agreement you are whacked with ridiculous cancellation fees. Try to get oil cheaper elsewhere and you get hot with another $400 fee. They trap you and once you think you are free at the end of your contract, they deliver more oil that you didn't ask for and make you pay the ceiling price... Which by the way is supposed to be in case prices go way up, but they use it every time even when prices are low because "they don't go by market prices". When you tell them you no longer live there they tell you to ask the new occupants to pay the inflated price because they will use it. They won't price match. They won't come take the oil back. They said auto delivery is separate from the contract even though the tank was completely empty while the account was "overdue" from the service contract charge. If you have Petro and have chosen the auto pay option, go look at your charges. They only show you the last 18 months so you can't see first hand how they double and triple the price of the contract over a period of several years. I asked for my entire account history to me sent and they do not include any details, only payment history. Sleazy and manipulative. Stay local, go with a private company. Don't let these people take advantage of you. read more

Shame on this company and its ethics. The contract is a bait and switch. They will change their prices without notification even being under contract. To terminate the contract is a $400 fee. I have been a customer of Petro Oil for 5 years. I am on their monthly budget plan. Their prices are always on the higher end but was willing to pay that in order to have the peace of mind of the included service plan. HOWEVER, this year I have seen a different side to this company and will NOT be renewing my contract. With a monthly budget plan, they asses how much you should pay per month based on average usage and how much they decide you will use per year. I normally do not use enough oil to go over my monthly payments (I tend to get back a couple hundred at the end of each years contract), but this year I received a bill for over $1000!!! That is a BIG difference from receiving a few hundred back each year to OWING +$1000! So I call them immediately to see if I can work out a payment plan over the next few months to take care of that--not a problem they say, they will have me pay about $350 a month for 3 months. Well, they very next day the full amount of $1127 is taken out AS WELL as the agreed upon payment plan amount of $350!!! I immediately call them and have to explain my story in full to two different people, in between multiple long holds. Still not too worried at this point. They apologize, "don't know how that happened", and assure me the pending monthly $350 payments are canceled and I should disable auto pay on my account login "just to be sure", which seemed fishy and unprofessional. They cannot issue me a refund of the $1127 "because once it's processed they can't get it back", which is ridiculous BUT I'm willing to just pay it in full and forget about itbut at this point they OWE ME $350 for charging me full bill amount PLUS the agreed upon monthly payment plan amount! Promise me a refund to my account for that amount in "3-5 business days"...weeks go by and I call to check on it and they say they "do not issue refunds, would I want to just roll that amount into next years budget plan?" ABSOLUTELY NOT, now I see the scam unfolding...over charge, do not issue refunds, and force them into using it towards future payments. I finally get them to give me a check for $350 (which took days of calling, and explaining this whole story over and over again), and a month goes by and today I wake up to $350 deducted from my bank account AGAIN from them, even after disabling auto pay and my account info from their website!!! UNREAL! At this point we are up to $1837 they have deducted from my bank account, even after I've disabled all account info and authorization of auto pay on their website, and still no resolution. I went against my better judgement even after knowing their bad reputation in RI, lesson learned. Stay far far away from this company. read more

My house i now 50 degrees, I am currently home sick with pneumonia and have 2 kids and 2 pets. What a. I paying for? I could have probably YouTube how to fix this by now I am beyond livid with the lack of service. Just an update... was on hold for an hour and a half decided to call from a friends phone got connected within 25 mins. Associate put me on hold to contact dispatch 15 mins later came back on to tell me she couldn't get a hold of anyone and that my recent window time (7pm) was still valid. My 3 years of money have meant nothing to them . read more

The technician, Bob 818, came to our house for a routine maintenance and cleaning to the boiler. Bob was extremely nice and explained exactly what we would be doing and how long it would take. It took him about an hour, and once he was done, he took the time to explain what he had done, what we should be on the lookout for, he provided us with documentation and information for future reference. Overall good experience. read more

I have been a Petro customer for 18 years. I've always been happy with the service and every time I've had a maintenance problem they have sent someone the same day or in the worst-case the next morning. I must say that anytime I've told them it's an emergency, for example it's winter, cold and we have no heat, or as in my recent experience, I have an active leak from my heating system, they have sent someone typically the same day if not within a few hours. Recently I had a very active leak which was threatening to flood my basement. A technician and customer representative Paul Perry were on site the same day. Paul and Bruce Crawford were able to put together a solution that would fix my problems and meet my needs going forward. Due to the age of my property there were limitations that had to be addressed and the project required some complex plumbing which was included in my installation price. They were very helpful with Paul returning to my property 3 times to make sure that things moving along correctly. Installation began the next day and the technicians didn't leave until the job was completed. The installation techs were professional and thorough and they left the Boiler Room cleaner and neater than it was before they started. I called the next day with a question and got a call back from Paul 10 minutes later. I'm very happy will the service and highly recommend it. read more
