Called Petinary to get records on a mutual patient(I'm a vet tech) and the receptionist was very short and had a tone. He asked for last name and when I gave it he said "weird they called about their cat's records yesterday". They only have a dog. He then asked to put me on hold and I said sure. Came back on and said they never did vaccines on the "cat" and he's "not sure what you want from me". I said I'm calling about a dog and he said "oh yes it's a dog". I asked if they did a tick test cause the owner had said they did. He said yes they did but that was it. I said okay that's all I need and he said "you're welcome" and hung up. Very unimpressed with the whole interaction and would expect more kindness from a fellow vet med professional. read more

Today I finally found a veterinarian here at Petinary, 1014 Williamson St. in East Madison Wisconsin. Dr. Mike Cohen put my mind at ease that I am taking great care of my cat Paulie and there wasn't necessity for worry about excessive care as Paulie is an older cat, and just as people age, and aren't perfect, that goes the same for animals. I am so glad Paulie visited Dr. Kohn, and we met his friendly, lovely wife Maricel as well today. This veterinary clinic I feel comfortable, like I was was with family and friends. I can tell Paulie, my cat enjoyed his time at the appointment with Dr. Kohn today, as he is happier than usual today. read more

I started going to Petinary a few years ago because it was in the neighborhood and I wanted to support a local business. It was fine for the standard vaccinations, but when my cat got sick, Mike (vet/owner) insisted that it was allergies despite my repeated objections. When I got a second option, it turned out to be inoperable cancer. Despite that, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and returned when I adopted a new cat from a shelter. The new cat turned out to be rather sickly, but rather than trying to address the issue (stop the diarrhea), he insisted that I would need to administer an IV drip twice daily to replace the fluids lost with the diarrhea. When I suggested that we address the diarrhea instead, he summarily dismissed me (again) and said I either had to give the IV or take the cat the ER constantly for dehydration. When I asked where his assistant and receptionist where (they had always been very friendly in the past), he proceeded to bad mouth his (now former) staff, making some rather shocking allegations. I can't speak to the truth of what was said, but they both seemed like good people when I had interacted with them throughout the previous years. He also sounded surprised that they were upset when he didn't wear a mask and told them that he had been exposed to COVID through a family member. While I was there, the mask was off and on, and even when on, the mask was always under his nose. Needless to say, I got a second opinion with a vet who not only helped me find the root cause of the diarrhea, she also found an ear infection that Mike completely missed. Mike's vet records said "ears fine". Despite all that, I was willing to let sleeping dogs lie until today. We needed our 3rd cat's records transferred to our new vet. My significant other went to pick up the paperwork because I really didn't want to deal with Mike's unprofessionalism and overall rudeness again. Mike proceeded to gripe at my SO, saying he had already faxed the records over to our new vet (the new vet said they never received the records, which is why we needed to pick them up in the first place). Mike then grumpily handed over records for the wrong cat. When my SO returned to get the correct records (a scant paragraph of scribbled notes), he overheard Mike bad mouthing him to another customer in the exam room!! I really wanted to like Petinary, and gave Mike several chances, but the multiple bad experiences I've had there, both in terms of pet care and general decency, compel me to warn people to go elsewhere. read more

I give a 3 star rating in that it was not my best vet experience ever, but i would still say this is a reputable place to take your pet to. My kitty was overdue for a vet appointment. I brought him to Petinary because it was close, convenient and they had an opening for the day i needed. The place is cute, lots of plants, birds in cages and also a dog laying under the reception desk. It almost seemed out of a movie or cartoon. The receptionist is super friendly and clearly loves to meet your furry family members. However, i was not told there would be five people in the room with my cat, the vet and myself. This really spooked my cat. He somewhat felt ambushed. He did not do well at his appointment and my cats temperament is generally very calm. The vet is very knowledgeable, i felt respected and my price for a checkup and rabies shot total was $65. This is very fair for Madison pricing. I will be coming back in October for an additional shot for my cat, but i will ask that there is not so many people around. I would suggest you also do the same if you think this would spook your animal. I ended up with the worst scratch i had ever received from my cat in 6 years of having him while holding him during them giving the vaccine. read more

My first visit to Petinary was a kind of emergency / stray bat situation (bat got into my apt, both cats needed to have their rabies shots updated). They were incredibly kind and supportive in what was a very stressful situation. I also need to add that one of my cats has a history of terrorizing vets (so I don't bring her to the vet very often). She was in full combat mode for this visit. When I was in the waiting room during her examination, she let out some kind of preternatural howl and two little boys in the waiting room actually *ran out of the building.* But Dr Kohn and his staff were totally unfazed by any of this and amazingly understanding. On another occasion I was leaving town for a few weeks, wasn't sure what to do if my little Tasmanian Devil became ill or decided to depart this earth while I was gone. Michelle was super helpful in explaining what my options were and very accommodating about working with my cat sitter in case she had to bring the cat in for me. I agree with others that Dr. Kohn's approach is very caring but not overly interventionist (and yes, also very reasonable fees for all services). This is a terrific local vet -- highly recommend! read more

Our cat is usually not a happy camper when she realizes we have her carrier out to take her to the vet. Naturally, this makes us very nervous about these experiences too. Despite this, we had a very pleasant experience on our visit here. They had a beautiful dog and a napping cat hanging around the clinic when we got in which was really nice and put us at ease. Like a previous reviewer mentioned, there were a couple of other people in the checkup room in addition to the doctor. However, this worked out for us as they were all very attentive to our questions and very good at keeping our kitty calm. If you think this might make your pet jittery, it might help to mention it to them when you are scheduling. Having a couple of extra hands on deck also made for an efficient visit. As the doctor reviewed our cat's files, one person took her temperature and another answered some of our questions. All in all, we were in and out in about 20 minutes. The doctor was pleasant and very clear in answering questions and concerns we had. They also did not try to upsell us on products or other things we really did not need, which unfortunately has been our experience at other vets. Overall, for 2 different shots that she was due for and a checkup we paid $90 which seems in line with costs in the area. read more

TLDR: I recommend avoiding The Petinary if your visit could include bad news/requires any TLC whatsoever. Fine for routine visits (vaccines etc). I hate to leave a negative review of a local business, but I want other pet owners to know what kind of care to expect here. After my bad experience I read through some of the other reviews. I wish I'd been in the right state of mind to read through them before I went to The Petinary so I could have avoided this altogether. The Petinary made a bad morning even worse and I wouldn't wish that on any other pet owner going through a tough time with their pet. My 9-year-old pit rescue suddenly and unexpectedly passed away after snuggling and playing fetch a mere 5 hours prior. We put him to bed healthy at 11pm and then when I woke up early at 4am and went to let him out of his kennel, he wasn't breathing. It was a shock followed by a gut wrenching 3hr of sitting with my partner and our beloved departed dog at home while we waited for a vet with cremation services to open. The Petinary was the first to open at 7am, so we headed in. We'd been there before for a vaccination and had an unremarkable experience (not positive, not negative) and it was reassuring to think that the place taking care of our dog in death would be someone who was familiar with our dog in life. However, we had a very off-putting experience with the owner/veterinarian Dr. Mike Kohn. We walked in and told him we'd come to drop off our dog for cremation. We were visibly in distress, but he didn't say a word to us (not "welcome in how can I help you" not "sorry"). He walked out to the car to help us bring our dog inside. Without going into graphic details, the way he handled our dog was upsetting. He dropped our dog on the tile floor right inside the exam room door (maybe it always feels harsh and unceremonious but I do think that letting him thud on the ground was a bridge too far), and walked back to the front desk to ring us up. Despite the hostility, my partner asked Dr. Kohn if he had any idea what could have caused a sudden death like this in an otherwise very healthy dog. Dr. Kohn glanced at our dog's file and without looking at us said "he was 9 1/2?" We responded yes and he just shrugged. We hadn't ordered an autopsy and Dr. Kohn hadn't asked for any details, so I know he couldn't give us an informed answer, but he could have said something like "some big breeds suffer from congenital heart defects" or "sometimes it's just their time." He just took the credit card I was holding out and scanned it for the cremation costs (which I will say were not totally unreasonable and came in a very nice box). By this point, I should have known not to try to engage any further, but I'd brought in our dog's nail clippers and a few months of his remaining heartguard medication and asked if maybe the office could use the nail clippers and give the medication to another client or a shelter (which may have been nonsense, but in my defense I wasn't exactly thinking straight that morning), and Dr. Kohn scoffed, rolled his eyes, and tossed the stuff on his desk. When I came to pick up our dog's ashes 2 weeks later, I met a slightly better version of Dr. Kohn, which -- given the low bar of that first visit -- meant that he handed me the ashes without outright disdain, but still without a single kind word. He said "should be all there" and handed me the bag. Before I left, I told him he'd hurt me and my partner with his gruffness and that I'd be writing a review to that effect. He avoided eye contact and said he didn't remember the morning I was talking about but that he apologized if he did any of that. I encouraged him to be more thoughtful in the future and I honestly hope he will be. I understand it's been a hard year and that everyone has hard days, but my partner and I were having a VERY hard day when we went to The Petinary that morning, and we were looking for some empathy or at least professionalism, and we received neither. Bad days notwithstanding, bedside manner and customer service are part of the job, and based on my experience, The Petinary does not deliver. read more

I love this place. They make the pet patient and family feel very personable. They take one patient at a time usually, so it's only you going into the clinic. I never had to wait to get care for my pup. Their prices are VERY reasonable and don't try to make you do unnecessary things just to make more money. They have such a welcoming and kind atmosphere and really care about your animal. I brought my pop here for checkups, teeth cleaning, and teeth surgery. read more

He's also medically misguided! He insisted we give our dog ONLY bottled Chippewa spring water! He explained he liked it for the design of the label, and was appalled that we gave our dog tap water, dropping his pen on the table and shaking his head in shock. When we asked further questions about the rationale for his recommendations he said, "I've been to hundreds of lectures, I don't have time to explain this to you." That's the job of a vet! I've also seen him get upset at pets who are resisting uncomfortable things, as animals do. I would absolutely not recommend. read more

The petinary is not exactly a modern place. The desk is always staffed by a little hippie girl, and the main vet has some odd assistants and isn't the most smiley guy in the world. But he absolutely saved my cat's life. He gave me great advice, trained me how to give her the rather extensive home care that she needed, rather than stay in the "hospital" for weeks, The bill, while a bit difficult to swallow, was way less than any of the other vets in town would have been, the places where they walk around in scrubs as though they are working in a hospital. When i couldn't cough up all the dough right away, they let me spread out the payments in a way I felt comfortable with. My cat is now happier and healthier than she has ever been in her life, and she is 17 years old now. I give full credit to the Petinary for a great diagnosis, treatment and general care. read more

They greeted us when we first walked in, Michelle took our info and pictures of Robert and the doctors were very knowledgeable and straight to the point. Just moved to Madison and live a few blocks from Petinary; so I called them first, despite some of the off the mark negative reviews. Dr Kohn is my kind of vet...Not trying to push meds or extra services/tests that my pug didn't need. Professional, with a nice sense of humor. If you can appreciate Willy St, and all it stands for, you'll for sure love this quaint little place. Karla answered the phone and was very helpful and friendly. She went above and beyond in trying to help 'troubleshoot' the problem my pug is having. After chatting for a bit, we both decided I should bring her in for Dr. Kohn to examine. Talk about a warm welcome! I mentioned I have a broken foot when I spoke to Karla, and when I arrived, Dr. Kohn was there to greet me and open/hold the door for me. He took his time to answer my questions and was so compassionate and gentle with my dog. I took home some antibiotics and was asked to call if I had any concerns and or questions. Dr. Mike and his staff really care about your pet. No hidden fees or exhorbitant, crazy lab tests when you don't need them. If you want your pet to get great care from a staff that truly cares about animals, you can't do much better. I took a moment to read the reviews here, and i have no idea who these bad reviewers saw, because i have nothing but RAVE reviews for the entire staff! I have MS & the nice woman at the front saw that i struggled to get up the stairs with my daughters cat, & came to my rescue. While i was waiting, i noticed how kind & sweet the guys were with all the other pets, & when it was our turn gave me the warmest welcome! They explained everything completely, as well as gave me tips on nail trimming! They thanked me several times for coming in... I will for sure pass their name along!! I bought a new puppy last week and the first thing I did when I got home was hop on Yelp to find a vet. Petinary was the only 5 star vet in Madison, and they are extremely deserving. When I set the appointment for my Lucy's first exam I was greeted by a very friendly person on the phone that was knowledgeable about every question I asked, no matter how obtuse. What really set them apart though was when we arrived for our appointment. The entire staff greeted us at the door and let us know just how much they had been looking forward to our visit. The doc gave Lucy a thorough exam and explained everything that would happen on the follow up appointments. Prices were on par with the vet from the small town I'm originally from Which I'm sure is inexpensive for Madison. While I was paying my bill and scheduling my next appointment the doc's assistant was keeping my pup entertained, playing with her. Friendly, knowledgeable, well priced... He was arrogant, treated my cat like a slab of meat the way he handled him, made him cry when he clipped his claws. That has NEVER happened before and I have always been present for clippings anywhere it has been done prior to this. I told him I will NOT pay the bill and will report him to the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection. I advise anyone else who has had any bad experiences with Dr. Kohn to do the same. Power in numbers. This man does NOT care about our pets. While the front desk girl has always been kind and helpful, I would not recommend going here solely because Dr. Kohn is rude. While I am sure he knows his stuff about animals, he is lacking in people skills. I was trying to ask him a question about a vaccine and he put his hand in front of my face and basically told me to shut up because I did not know what I was talking about. We took our very sweet 6 yo old cat in. She needed a few things looked at, shots and a general check up. The woman at the front desk was welcoming but the two men who looked at her, from the very beginning were very rough with her. They forcefully yanked her out of her carrier and held her down as if they were rushing to finish our appointment as soon as possible. It was so unnecessary and she responded like any cat feeling threatened would have. I understand vets need to protect themselves but they didn't even give her a chance to feel at ease. They didn't know she was a "she" even though it says it in her chart. They showed no compassion, no attempt to make us or our cat feel any better. They just kept mentioning how she had an attitude and that it was a "problem." They did not bring up any of our concerns that we outlined over the phone (teeth cleaning, bump near her eye, rectal gland issue), which turned out to be OK because we will be taking her somewhere else. Why make an already scary visit for a sweet little cat worse? We will NEVER be going back. read more

This is the worst veterinarian in Madison. One word for this guy, "disinterested." I have been to many vets over my 25 years here, having moved around a bit. In 2013 I tried to get a Lepto vaccination that another vet recommended, Petinary vet said he "never saw cases of this and didn't carry it" but the other vet said she had 2 dogs die of it this year alone. What a crackpot. He also missed asthma with a cat I have, diagnosed it as "just dust" in the air. Another vet I know stated, "I don't even know why he's still open." Go somewhere else where the veterinarian cares! Like: Community Critters, Sandhill, Healthy Pet, Whole Pet, Lakeveiw, Northside. I have taken my dog to several different vets in several different states--the Petinary is THE BEST my dog has been to, hands down. I am a grad student and I always worry how much a visit will cost me. My dog needed her annual check-up plus a couple of vaccinations and the bill was only $80. Best part? The vaccinations are good for three years! Dr. Kohn and his staff are amazing and they want what's best for you and your dog. For example, I expected the doc to tell me my dog needed one of those really expensive teeth cleanings which is a conversation that happens at every other vet I've been to. After looking at my dog's teeth, he said they had tartar build-up but nothing out of the ordinary. Also, the front desk receptionist helped me figure out how to register my dog as a new resident of WI and even made an extra copy of my dog's rabies vaccine certificate for me. A good experience. My dog had some loose teeth. I don't have a "regular" vet as my dog has not needed treatment very often. I suspected extraction was warranted. Upon examination the doctor concurred. He scheduled surgery a couple of days later. I was seen promptly on both visits. $65 exam fee is same as a non-emergency appointment at the emergency place on the Beltline (yes, they also take non-emergency cases). While it was difficult to get estimates out of other vet's I called, some were forthcoming. My ultimate cost for tests and surgery was the same as most, but far less than the new, upscale place on Monroe Street (next to the old Mallott's Pharmacy). Granted the place is "not modern" as one reviewer described it, but I look past such aesthetics- it was clean and is quite functional. The doctor (like everyone else) has his own personality. I found him professional in his presentation and most important- he provided a good outcome. read more

Our little dog has another UTI (gets one or two a year). Petinary let us bring in a urine sample rather than heaving to take time off from work to drag her in, and charged us accordingly. And when we couldn't make it in before they closed they left her meds and a bunch of free prescription food next door at mad catz! We've had nothing but great experiences at the Petinary. We've taken both of our dogs here for shots and infections and everything has been great. The staff is friendly, yet hey never up sell or over charge. They always do follow up calls to check on your pets. I seriously love this vet! read more

We've taken our kitties to Dr. Mike for many years. He's a no-nonsense guy with years and years of practical experience. He doesn't push for endless blood tests, etc. and run up thousands of unnecessary vet bills. If you have a really unusual pet problem, maybe a more sophisticated clinic with ultrasound, CT, etc. would be in order, but for 95% of issues, he will get to the heart of the matter and give you good advice. We recently acquired an older cat from our son in Chicago. He was a homeless cat that followed his room mate home from a party two years ago. Our son and his room mate are both going to new locations and couldn't take the cat. He's a lovable old guy (10) very friendly, and we just couldn't let him go to the shelter. We took him in to Dr. Mike for a checkup. Turns out he had 4 abscessed teeth and a bad case of ear mites. Dr Mike made a special appointment early the next day to do the surgery and charged us what I'm sure was hundreds of dollars less than at any other vet. Our cat is recovering beautifully and has a totally new lease on life. First time in two years he's been out of an apartment--he's out on our patio and back yard rolling in the sun. read more
