I first reviewed Pete's Place many years ago, back when I was just starting out with simple food reviews. Coming back now, I wanted to see if it still lived up to the five stars I gave it back then, not out of nostalgia, but out of curiosity. The menu has grown into a wide spread: sandwiches, salads, burgers, chicken fried steak, even pasta. It's the kind of menu that makes you realize this place is built to feed everyone, no matter what they're in the mood for. I started with something simple, a water on a hot summer day, and it arrived with a lemon wedge. It's a small touch, but one I haven't seen in a while. The kind of detail that tells you someone still cares about the basics. It was lunchtime, so I waited a bit to be seated, but that's just part of dining in a small town. The waitress was kind, patient, and attentive in a way that stood out. Before I could even ask, she refilled my water multiple times, noticing the half‑empty glass and taking care of it without hesitation. That kind of service goes a long way. I ordered the jalapeño burger, and it came out faster than expected. The fries were lightly salted steak fries, my favorite, and cooked just right. The burger itself was a mixed experience. The bun was grilled, which gave it good flavor, but it also made it collapse into a thin, flat shape the moment I picked it up. And while I ordered a jalapeño burger expecting heat, the jalapeños were thick, grilled slices from a large pepper. Every bite was dominated by jalapeño, to the point where the burger itself got lost in the background. I love spicy food, but the balance was off, more jalapeño than burger. Still, the service was warm, the goodbye on the way out was genuine, and the menu has enough variety that I'd come back to try something different. I'm not handing out five stars this time, but I'm also not writing this place off. Pete's Place is part of Exeter's rhythm, and revisiting it felt like checking in with an old spot that still has plenty to offer, just maybe not that jalapeño burger again. read more

After looking at the reviews on Google and here on Yelp I figured I'd give Pete's place a try. I don't know if it was an off day or something was wrong with the kitchen but the food was just subpar. As we walked in, the place was quite small with Booths lined up against the wall. The declarations were of a Christian theme which I did not mind. First off the service, the young man who attended to us was a great help and just did what he could do with what he had at the time. Unfortunately he had no control on what's going on in kitchen. My companion ordered a chicken salad. What she got was a salad with leafy greens topped with a fried chicken breast. It was rubbery and tasteless. And a leafy greens with it were limp and not very fresh. As for me I order the pot roast. I was thinking it was Marie callender's style with vegetables mixed into it and a hearty gravy that topped the meat. When I got was a tragic looking 4 slices of overcooked and literally chewy/gray matter that's their roast beef. The vegetables were on the side and not in the gravy mix. I tried eating it and it was just awful. So After I explain the situation, the young man retook my order and I have gotten the California chicken broiler with bacon. That was an improvement but not enough to save the evening. The broiled chicken breast was overcooked and felt like biting into a melted hockey puck. The conclusion I'm not planning on returning to this place. read more

The first thing that drew me to this place was the sense of comfort and being at home when I walked through the door. We were instantly greeted by who I'm assuming is the owner and were sat right away as it is self seating. Once we had ordered, the food was on our table within five minutes, and tasted delicious. I ordered their hunters chicken all I can say is * chef kisses * it also came with a piece of the best cornbread Ive ever tasted ( I've never been a fan of it till now) it's one of my favorite lunch spots and my order is always ready for pick up on time! You can go anywhere for food these days but you don't always get great service. Pete came up to us and greeted us and checked to see if everything was well more than once or twice. Wow, this is a gem hidden in the small sleepy town of Exeter. So If you are interested in friendly small farm town vibes this is the best. The food was good too. read more

If you are looking for really good food, great service, and reasonable prices, Pete's Place is a great choice. Today, I had the chicken fried steak, and it was perfect. I don't eat that dish often, but when I do I expect it to be fantastic, and Pete's Place hit a home run with their preparation. My guest had the BLAT, and she gave it thumbs up. She was going to leave a few bites on her plate, so I gladly tested it when I noted she had left some bacon. The BLAT was as good as they get and I'd order it again in a heart beat. The waiter for the day was a young guy that provided outstanding service. He did everything one wants a waiter to do and he did it well. Pete, where did you find this guy? If he is looking for a career in hospitality, he will do quite well. Strike that....he will do well no matter what he does in the future, and that sort of person is a rare find these days (or any days for that matter). We found this place on Yelp while traveling in the area from Florida. We each chose a sandwich, but there were other things on the menu that sounded good too. The food was delicious, the portion size was good, and the prices were reasonable. The owner even came over and chatted with us! What a nice touch! This place is a gem hidden in Exeter, The Restaurant looks very clean so far. And we got drinks very quickly. We sat on the otherside of the grill and to hungry customers, it only makes my mouth water listening to the grill goin'. They make everything from scratch!... As I was writing the intro to this review our food arrived! The Sandwich was so good, but it wasmissong bell peppers in my opinion. It had onions, tri tip, cheese and mushrooms. Have eaten here a few times with no issues. Today went and ate and my wife ordered her typical sandwich The Spicy Mega Melt she stated it tasted funny. We looked at the sliced tri tip and it had a greenish tint with orange rings in it. Smelt the may and it had an off smell. We called the waitress over and told her she didn't want to look at the meat and said she sold two others earlier with no complaint. She also advised the meat was cooked the night before so shouldn't be bad. Well it was bad. It will probably be along time before I go back. read more

We always have great food and service. We enjoy meeting with our little group once in a great while and having dinner. The fajita salad, bbq western burger, spicy mega melt, croissant club are just a few of our favorites. For desert hands down the chocolate shake is excellent along with the peanut butter pie. read more

Had a large group so I called 4 days ahead. They were candid that they did not take reservations but they said it was a slow time of day and they'd leave the staff plenty of warning. I was clear the group had kids. We arrived, they expected us but seemed totally confused about what we wanted and what they were supposed to do. They were very rude and unprofessional. The place was 80% empty but they really did not want us to sit at the tables. Overall it was a horrible experience. If you have a group or children, do not try this place. read more
