Everything about it reminds me of burgers we got when I was a tad bit younger! Perfect char on the patty, perfectly griddled bun, perfect ratio of veggies to burger! In a word it was perfect! I got the regular single. They have a Jumbo and Doubles for heartier appetites. They fries were awesome as well! I added gravy to mine. An option one doesn't see very often today. Gravy needed some additional Black Pepper but I would say that about pretty much any gravy. Really glad we made the trip over to Tastee Burgers and we'll certainly be back!

Move over Weinerschnitzel, a new dog heavyweight is in town. Portillo's has been rapidly expanding…read morein Texas from Houston and Dallas and now into the Central and South regions. They did not forget about Lubbock, though, with a Portillo's opening just a few months ago in the Canyon West shopping center. Known for their Chicago style hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches, I do not know why they decided Texas was the move, especially with our market being fatigued with so many fast food options, but I am not mad at it. Inside, they have four different kiosks to order from plus three registers. There is also an extensive amount of seating. It is like they were expecting a lot of hype. It feels a little ambitious, but when I was driving down Marsha Sharp last Saturday, I saw a full parking lot and a wraparound drive through line. Maybe they understood Lubbock's greed more than I did. I walked in and decided to order at the register and went for their number two combo, which is two Chicago dogs, a drink, and fries. However, the lady taking my order put every item in individually and asked me for sizes, and I think it cost more, which is a little unfair. I should have just ordered at the kiosk. The order came out not fast food fast but fast casual fast food fast in a to go bag. Two glizzies were both individually wrapped, and they had a good weight to them. They were actually pretty loaded with a quarter pickle, relish, mustard, peppers, tomatoes, and chopped onions. The poppy seed bun was nice too. I enjoyed both of them but was surprised at how much kick those peppers had. I was asked if I wanted cheese sauce, and I said sure. I thought it was included, but why would it be? I paid for it and really enjoyed it with my fries. It is basically artificial cheese goop, but it was thick and better than most I have had and complemented the salty and crisp crinkle cut fries. To close, I ordered a small chocolate cake shake because when is the next time I will be close to a Portillo's? Other than it being thicker than a Scottish accent, it was pretty good with actual cake bits in there. I do not fully know its appeal because I paid $14 for two hot dogs, a drink, and fries when that is less than $10 in my head, but I had a good meal there. Live Laugh Lot Dogs. RIYL: Glizzies.

11June2026 I have been married to a Lubbock Native for 27…read moreyears now, and for all of this time, I have been hearing about Spanky's, just across from Texas Tech University. She has been hyping up this joint forever and during this trip to her hometown, we ended up there on our first night we were in town. On the outside, it looks like the typical university food joint that could be at any university town across America. It was small with a few tables and booths and had stuff across the walls that yelled TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS so loud that it could be seen from the ISS. Apparently, the owner is a big fan and possibly an Alumna of TTU. We ordered the hand dipped mushrooms and onion rings to go along with our burgers. Little did I know what an experience the two appetizers would be. Lets just say that I have NEVER has such wonderful shrooms and rings ... ever. Thats saying something. The mushrooms are not the typical soft, mushy ones that many places serve out of the Sysco bags ... no, these were easily identifiable as button mushrooms even through the crispiness of the batter. Firm, sliceable and easily skewered by a fork to be dipped in ranch sauce. In short ... they were lip-smackin good. The onion rings, dipped in the same batter, cooked in the same oil and served at the same temperature were just as delectable. They were thick sliced sweet yellows that held their toothiness throughout the frying process. Just the bite into it was yummy, sweet and crispy ... all at the same time. These reminded me of the onion rings I used to get at Tookies down in Seabrook, Tx during the 70's and 80's. For my main, I chose the "Hotter than Hell Burger" with crinkle fries. I like hot and spicy and expected it to actually be hotter than it was. The sliced jalapeño and habanero spread were present and did the job of letting my taste buds know they were doing their job. It just wasn't the knockout I was expecting from a burger place serving university students that would eat really spicy stuff on a dare. Don't get me wrong, that burger was really good, just as my Wife said it would be. That statement is truth, not hype, but hotter than hell, naah. More like hotter than heck. My biggest disappointment was the limited selection of good beer. Light beer, cheap lagers and Mexican standards. Would it hurt to put in an IPA or a Stout? Overall, the staff were wonderful and answered any of the myriad of questions I had about their fare. It was an actual experience for me, especially after all of the hype my Wife told me over the decades. Usually, after a big span of time, places from our youth let us down. Spanky's is NOT a place like that. I will be sure to make it there on the next trip to Lubbock ... even if my Wife isn't with me. Ciao, Darrell
