I have been driving by this place for quite a while. The wonderful smell finally got be and I stopped in. I am kicking myself for waiting so long. I wanted to try everything but decided on the tri tip and pulled pork. Outstanding!!! Smoky flavor throughout, both very tender and delicious. Been here 5 times. and overall the food has been meh. First off they mess up orders, and they dont give some of the items you ordered. I ordered the Tri-tip fries with no cheese and bbq sauce on the side. They did not remove the cheese and they forgot my bbq sauce. and some of the tri tip was also raw. not a big big deal but I would not like undercooked meat. I also ordered some Onion rings but they never gave them to me. (they have done all of this this multiple times) Food is alright not the best but its a 3.5/5 Family and I concluded that we will not be going back. Have a wonderful day. read more

Staff was friendly and all smiles. Grey guys. 2. Brisket was the worst I have ever had. Rubber, dry, lots of fat and horrible color. 3. Mac and cheese was a combination of noodles mixed with can cheese? Not sure how you can mess that up but it was done. 4. I was excited to stop by here on my way home today. It looked like a promising hole in the wall - my favorite type of place. The staff was nice and friendly. And they had masks and hand sanitizer, so that's good! I ordered tri tip and brisket for takeout. The meat was so dry and flavorless. My husband and I actually debated which meat was which, because they looked and tasted the same. We finally determined that the brisket was the one with more "burnt ends." I went expecting to get the BBQ ribs, but they were totally charred black, with meat dry and hard looking. I fell back on the "build it yourself" burger. I twice specified no cheese, but I got cheese melted into the patty anyway. The patty was large and cooked exactly to my request, but lacking flavor: it was lean and good looking but had little taste. The fries were greasy, dark gray colored, and limp. no crisp at all and tasted bad. The tables and chairs are painted steel and welded together and bolted to the floor. It was cold, rainy and windy outside and inside it was very uncomfortably cold. For entertainment, there was the big tattooed guy with earrings pacing up and down and all around shouting his inventory troubles. He was short one meat cut and it was an emergency. He had too many of another and a third cut was unacceptable and had to be returned. Was really delicious bbq. Decided on Combo #1 - sign says "feeds 2 people", but it was WAY more food than my husband and I could eat! We chose the spicier bbq sauce on all meat. It came with 1/4 rack of Ribs, several slices of Tri-Tip, 1/2 chicken, 2 sides and 3 Brioche slider rolls for under $25. All meat was melt in your mouth - AWESOME. We took home the 1/2 chicken because it was so much food. The fries were yummy but the coleslaw was just ok. The toughest part of lunch was that the inside of the restaurant was 40*. We had to get our hoodies and furry vest jackets out of the car while waiting to eat. There was no outside seating, I would have preferred to eat in the sunshine. We passed by this place on our way to hike the Cedar Creek Falls and made a mental note to stop here after our hike on our way back home. It smelled great in the small parking lot, but we were a bit confused on where to enter and then realized it is housed inside the liquor store. There were some small tables to eat inside and they keep the liquor store and this place surprisingly separate so you are not ordering or eating your food as Cheeto addicted kids are coming in grabbing their supply. You order at the counter from a rather extensive menu option and wait for you food. The wait wasn't too bad...maybe 10 minutes. They also have maybe 7 beers on tap which was nice to grab a cold one as we waited for our food. We got the brisket sandwich with fries and the sandwich was delicious and the fries were good too. We ordered a side of macaroni salad that was just ok. Customer service was decent and the prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity you receive. I ordered the brisket sandwich and my son ordered the design your own burger. They have a fair amount of burger and sandwich toppings but could add quote a few more. He said it tasted like a typical burger like Carl's Jr....was good but not great. They definitely had issues with my order. First they forgot to give me mac and cheese as a side even though they'll still charged me extra for it. Second, I asked for the bbq sauce on the side. It came with no sauce at all. The sandwich was dry. The brisket was not fresh, in fact it seems like it was either reheated or sitting in juices of some sort. Meat was moist but only because it was sitting in liquid. This took away from flavor of the smoke and meat. When smoking, a smoke ring is supposed to me visible but instead the meat was all one color...dark brown. Not worth the $24 I spent. The BBQ sauce is delicious and the meat is fantastic without sauce. The portions are huge and it was a pleasant surprise once we got our food. The employees were really nice and helpful and we got served quickly. We tried the pulled pork fries, the Sue's sriracha burger, and the tri-tip sandwich. Ok, it's in the back of a liquor store. But take a chance and give it a try. It's very good. They provide generous portions of a variety of food. The burgers are 1/2 pounders and cooked to order. My favorite is Pete's Classic featuring grilled onions and cheese with thousand island dressing. I ditch the tomatoes but keep the lettuce. Super. They offer fry plates with a huge mound of fries and your choice of brisket, tri tip, or pulled pork. I tend to favor the tri tip over the brisket...slightly. Both are great and easily good for 2 eaters. They have beer on tap...and barn cider at $5 is the priciest item. Coors or Bud light are both $3. Oh man!!!! Football Sunday was super awesome with Pete's BBQ sandwiches and sides. Their grilled pastrami was the bomb. The brisket sandwich had sliced brisket that I compare to beef bacon. We ordered two "plates" and made the mistake of not checking our meals after the customer in front of us had to come back inside because his large order of barbecue was lacking any barbecue sauce... The ribs I had were definitely fall off the bone but had a weird "freezer" taste to them. The prices are reasonable but not for the quality we actually received. Five stars for a barbecue place? Yep... I was surprised as well. I must say...I have literally driven by Pete's over a thousand times and I am ashamed I am just now discovering it. Yes this BBQ joint is operating inside the larger bottle shop/liquor store. But, somehow they still manage to have half a dozen sit down tables, a giant digital menu board and several decent beers on tap. You aren't going to get a lot of frills here, but this is comfort food in a great pure form. The food is BBQ at the roots, with brisket, pulled pork, ribs and chicken. However, there are some outside the box options such as burgers and even loaded fries, barbecue burritos and loaded mac n cheese. On my recent visit I attempted to beat the pulled pork burrito, and I failed. I was pleasantly surprised that the pulled pork was not dry... and the addition of battered fries int he burrito gave it a great twist. I would go back just for that item. However, that last star or so was pulled in by the staff. There was a family ahead of me that had, apparently, never had BBQ before and had a million questions. The guy manning the register managed to get them moved along and still had the enthusiasm to try and talk me in to the peach cobbler. But the way one deals with that honestly is a chipped or "pulled" brisket sandwich. Not THE brisket sandwich. If you have that much leftover brisket, then you're smoking too much. Simple. And you charge less, a lot less. I won't be back. Because you charged me a premium price for a sub-par sandwich. AND you charged me $1.99 EXTRA for Mac and cheese sauce. This is the best BBQ spot in San Diego. I love Pete's. The portions are great, the smoked meat is great, the sides are great. There's nothing to not like here. Been here once before and took my kid for a motorcycle ride to Ramona for lunch. I knew we were going here no matter what! You can smell the smokers down the street and it just draws you in. Got the brisket plate with Mac, potato salad and cornbread. He got the tri tip plate with baked beans Mac and rolls. Brisket was a little tough definitely not fall apart fork tender, still killed it because you know, smoked meat is always delicious. Tri tip was amazing. We're from the birthplace of Santa Maria style tri tip over oak wood so smoked tri tip is a welcome change up. Baked beans are awesome. Smoky and spicy. People say the Mac is like velveeta but it's definitely not! I had to stab his hand to keep him from stealing mine! Potato salad wasn't mushy and Mayo drenched and had a great flavor and texture. I didn't try the rolls because the boy murdered them so they must be good. The liquor store they're located in has an epic beer selection. Give these guys the support they deserve!
