All the current active staff working at this specific location have demonstrated & proven how extremely capable & exhaustively knowledgeable as trainers, dog behavior specialists, groomers, etc. They have exceedingly created a trustworthy controlled environment setting that makes me reassuringly safe to entrust the safety & wellbeing of my 4-legged son. They have gone above & beyond for my puppy & I could not praise/thank them enough for their time, energy & effort to nurture my puppy's confidence & needs. Including assessing & addressing his trauma triggers being bullied as the "runt" of his litter, that occurred prior to his rescue. I am thoroughly enthralled with their most adorable & transparently informative daily report cards that are released after their daycare reservation. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to cultivate & nurture their doggo-puppers development & overall wellbeing (with a heaping side of well deserved spoiled treatment)! Will definitely be a continuing member, as long as they will have Beemo & I, after we officially move to the PNW.

Her kindness in making herself available several times a week, along with her skilled techniques, has made a wonderful difference. Following Elizabeth's guidance over several months of walk and train sessions, I am now able to enjoyably walk my strong, reactive girl on a daily basis and look forward to exploring the world with her. I am a disabled combat veteran, but do not qualify for a 'service animal' from non-profits because I do not have the 'correct' diagnosis, even though I suffer from the same exact symptoms as those with PTSD. My wife's mother, who lives in Europe, recently had a stroke and my wife has been by her side since early August. If I hope to see my wife at all over the next several years, because of her and my commitment to ensure that her mother gets the care and attention she deserves, we needed to be much closer than the Pacific NW, hence our uprooting. In order to have Kemper fly with me in the cabin on a grueling 10-hour trans-Atlantic flight, he needed some several skills which he was lacking when we adopted him from the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society after six years of being abandoned and abused, for no reason, by one owner after another. Even with his unjust and unconscionable treatment early in life, he is one of the sweetest and dogs I have ever known. Julie and Kemper quickly developed a strong bond and she was willing to work with me one-on-one, tailoring a training plan for both of us to get us where we need to be with just two months before boarding the plane. Having a Master's in Psychology, I am an expert in operant and classical conditioning, but lacked the understanding of how dogs think, so Julie was training both of us along the way. Kemper picked-up on things quickly and me, not so much, but we were compelled to get the job done and succeed in our mission, no room for error. Paws Down is not exactly cheap when it comes to private training, but Julie did not charge for travel time to our home and routinely stayed after the allotted one-hour appointment times. Yesterday, less than two months after starting with Julie, Kemper passed his AKC Canine Good Citizen test and his certificate is on the way, arriving well before we need it for travel to our new home. Thank you Paws Down and Julie for helping me ensure that my support animal and I make it safely to Europe, reuniting our family after moths apart. My husband went to find an employee to help us with getting some crickets. As soon as the lady "IL" on her name tag walks up, she immediately told me I should have scanned a QR code if I wanted help. Not realizing there even was a QR code to scan, I asked how it worked. She responded "like any other QR code!". So whatever, I needed crickets. She asked how many and I told her we have one leopard gecko and I wasn't sure. She then replies that she doesn't have any lizards so how would she know? (I assumed that since I was at a pet store the employees would know about pets, and this store sells leopard geckos...) I asked for 20, then remembered the previous lady had dusted them with some calcium, so I asked about that. She was very short just telling me they don't do that. I left this store feeling like I had done something wrong for simply asking questions. I was treated like crap the entire time. I will go to Petco down the road from now on. Clearly PetSmart isn't interested in helping their customers, and has no knowledge on the pets they sell.

Things…read moretend to turn out looking off and we end up having to fix things on our own to the best of our ability- but not here! They have groomed our 2 coton de tulears many times at this point and every time they come out looking great! No weird long looking poodle ears like the people who like to keep the hair on the ears long, we think they end up looking silly when groomers do that. We told them we prefer shorter ears before their first groom and they have always done it without having to be asked ever since! No weird random chunks of longer hair like when groomers don't take the time to make sure everything is around the same length. A HUGE thing for us is neither have come back from Rustic Mutt with razor burn! I can't tell you how many groomers have ended up at bare minimum giving our little guy razor burn even when we warn them he is prone to it. I've even had to pay for urgent vet appointments they've gotten razor burn from other groomers so bad but never here. Our poor boy used to come home from grooming, appointments, totally miserable and would run from carpet to carpeted area and sit down to try to not feel that irritation on his skin. It was awful and no matter how many times I tried to make sure they were careful , it would always result in razor burn. When we moved here I really wasn't looking forward to finding a groomer again because it's hard to find one I trust because of this. Rustic Mutt put me at ease and the people have been very nice. I always appreciate the option to text them as well as I'm not great at keeping up with the phone sometimes. We went through a really stressful, prolonged time in our lives recently and when we were away almost all the time and when we were local it was busy. I was diagnosed with a very painful disease that has no cure, several surgeries, several rounds of IVF, I could go on. This resulted in my husband and my dogs needing to travel all the time, living in hotels for months while getting care and treatment and some of the surgeries. Since it was such a frenetic time we weren't able to get them in for a regularly timed groom and with all the walking and no access to regular bathing for them they ended up quite matted and dirty by the time we were able to get them in for an appointment. I really did try to brush them and keep up as best I could but at a certain point with them not shedding and their hair getting so long I'm ashamed to say I let it get away from me. They went to such great lengths to cut their hair and not give them razor burn, not shave them all the way down, and they left some of the matts on the counter to show us what they had cut off and how bad the matting had gotten. Contrary to what people might assume I was appreciated of the gentle visual chiding, it shows me they care for the animals. There are only 2 reasons I can't give them the 5th star and it is this: 1) as far as I'm aware they still choose to go off of verbal confirmation that an animal has been receiving their vaccinations & such. Almost every other groomer I've ever worked with (and I've had dogs all my life) required confirmation from an animal's veterinarian that they are up to date and while it's a pain in the butt to constantly keep that updated it also makes me feel safer knowing all the other animals they will be around in the establishment are up to date as well. Verbal confirmation is great but unfortunately I'm sure it's easy for some people to lie. I had a problem once when my dogs were around dogs that weren't up to date and it resulted in one of my dogs being hospitalized, a very heart wrenching experience and expensive mistake that could've been avoided. Just to be clear this didn't happen at Rustic Mutt but a previous place, I'm just explaining why the worry had relevance to me. 2) you generally have to schedule pretty far in advance in my experience to get in generally, especially in the summer, which I understand but unfortunately there are times where you really just need to get your dog in and can't wait several months. I wish that they would/were able to hire more people, even just for bathing services so during the times I can't bathe them regularly it would be great if I could rely on them for that.
