It's really hard to find a groomer that knows how to give a good puppy cut to our cotons. Things tend to turn out looking off and we end up having to fix things on our own to the best of our ability- but not here! They have groomed our 2 coton de tulears many times at this point and every time they come out looking great! No weird long looking poodle ears like the people who like to keep the hair on the ears long, we think they end up looking silly when groomers do that. We told them we prefer shorter ears before their first groom and they have always done it without having to be asked ever since! No weird random chunks of longer hair like when groomers don't take the time to make sure everything is around the same length. A HUGE thing for us is neither have come back from Rustic Mutt with razor burn! I can't tell you how many groomers have ended up at bare minimum giving our little guy razor burn even when we warn them he is prone to it. I've even had to pay for urgent vet appointments they've gotten razor burn from other groomers so bad but never here. Our poor boy used to come home from grooming, appointments, totally miserable and would run from carpet to carpeted area and sit down to try to not feel that irritation on his skin. It was awful and no matter how many times I tried to make sure they were careful , it would always result in razor burn. When we moved here I really wasn't looking forward to finding a groomer again because it's hard to find one I trust because of this. Rustic Mutt put me at ease and the people have been very nice. I always appreciate the option to text them as well as I'm not great at keeping up with the phone sometimes. We went through a really stressful, prolonged time in our lives recently and when we were away almost all the time and when we were local it was busy. I was diagnosed with a very painful disease that has no cure, several surgeries, several rounds of IVF, I could go on. This resulted in my husband and my dogs needing to travel all the time, living in hotels for months while getting care and treatment and some of the surgeries. Since it was such a frenetic time we weren't able to get them in for a regularly timed groom and with all the walking and no access to regular bathing for them they ended up quite matted and dirty by the time we were able to get them in for an appointment. I really did try to brush them and keep up as best I could but at a certain point with them not shedding and their hair getting so long I'm ashamed to say I let it get away from me. They went to such great lengths to cut their hair and not give them razor burn, not shave them all the way down, and they left some of the matts on the counter to show us what they had cut off and how bad the matting had gotten. Contrary to what people might assume I was appreciated of the gentle visual chiding, it shows me they care for the animals. There are only 2 reasons I can't give them the 5th star and it is this: 1) as far as I'm aware they still choose to go off of verbal confirmation that an animal has been receiving their vaccinations & such. Almost every other groomer I've ever worked with (and I've had dogs all my life) required confirmation from an animal's veterinarian that they are up to date and while it's a pain in the butt to constantly keep that updated it also makes me feel safer knowing all the other animals they will be around in the establishment are up to date as well. Verbal confirmation is great but unfortunately I'm sure it's easy for some people to lie. I had a problem once when my dogs were around dogs that weren't up to date and it resulted in one of my dogs being hospitalized, a very heart wrenching experience and expensive mistake that could've been avoided. Just to be clear this didn't happen at Rustic Mutt but a previous place, I'm just explaining why the worry had relevance to me. 2) you generally have to schedule pretty far in advance in my experience to get in generally, especially in the summer, which I understand but unfortunately there are times where you really just need to get your dog in and can't wait several months. I wish that they would/were able to hire more people, even just for bathing services so during the times I can't bathe them regularly it would be great if I could rely on them for that. read more

Wow, what a place! The folks behind the counter were so pleasant and understanding, and really cared for our dog! Their work is incredible! They tailor to your specific request, but also incorporate the breed standard. Nash, our doodle, has not looked better than when he finished here. They did some scissor work, and that really set this grooming appointment apart for the others he's had. Pricing is fair, I'd say. Since he was manually "clipped" or scissored, there was a slight up charge. Paid a little over $100 with tip. Oh, and they're quite punctual, and give a good estimate of the time they'll hold your pet. Overall, great place! read more

I hate leaving poor reviews, but in this instance it has to happen. We chose Rustic Mutt based on the good reviews and the first couple of times we had a good experience. Last month we had an appointment for our dog and they called last minute to cancel because a groomer called in sick. It happens from time to time so I get it and we were able to get her into another groomer same day (PetSmart). Rustic Mutt never called back to re-schedule so we did and were supposed to have her cut today. We confirmed our appointment yesterday and we got another text this morning letting us know that the groomer called in sick so they can't take our dog. They never offered an alternate date or time. Our doodle is very much in need of a cut so we just had to call PetSmart again. I hope they are taking better care of their other customers and their chronically ill groomer gets better soon, but we won't be back. Our older golden girl Penny was overdue for a bath and groom after recovering from a leg surgery. Taking her to Rustic Mutt was the right choice for her to get some extra TLC! The place is clean, calm, and friendly, with lots of fun dog toys, art, accessories, and treats to browse while you're there. The groomer was helpful and accommodating when I explained what I wanted done (almost everything, with a short haircut to match the fur on her leg that was growing in). When she was finished, Penny had been transformed from a wild, curly, red "sheep" into a beautiful, showy golden retriever again. I can't say enough good about Cayly and Rustic Mutt. I have followed this groomer from Gresham where she has been my girls groomer since January of 2011. I have lost several and rescued more. Each new rescue she has made room for in her schedule and has welcomed with open arms. I am a die hard standard poodle lover and these dogs take a lot of work, which she does with a smile. My girls look forward to seeing her and look great when done. The staff is amazing and her brother who helps in the mornings is always to kind to me and the girls. The shop is clean and perfectly decorated...so so cute! Having multiple groomers and all the space is truly perfect for this location. I look forward to my drive to see everyone tomorrow. Oh added bonus...Cayly does the cutest little temporary tattoos on the girls hips. Cayly is a joy and such a talent. We (my mom, our neighbors and my husband and I) have been loyal customers of Cayly's since she opened her dog boutique in Gresham. We always booked Buddy, Sofie and Yoshi's appointments in advance. She and her team are the BEST and once word got out she remained (and still is!!) in high demand Sadly our last two furbabies passed away about the time that Cayly opened Rustic Mutts. I was in the Vancouver area today and stopped by to see her new shop and say hello. The shop is clean, comfortable and oh so stylish! The three goldens that were being groomed when I stopped by looked calm and happy (just like our pups were when we dropped off and picked up!). My boyfriend made an appointment to get our 15 year old dog groomed. We brought her in ten minutes prior to her appointment. I introduced her and we were taking about service when a woman, I suspect the owner chimed in asking how old the dog was. I told her and she immediately said we needed to reschedule as the dog was too old. I asked why and she told me it was their policy. I again asked why as I've never heard of anything like this and she stated they "liked to do them in the morning all the way through". I explained that no one ever asked the age of the dog when scheduling the appt. Additionally, I have never heard of this ever before when taking my dogs in for grooming. I felt it was very unprofessional, and disrespectful of my time. I suspect that she just didn't want to groom our dog, as an older dog came in right after I walked out. Needless to say, I believe the previous five star reviews weren't treated as poorly as we were. I will not recommend them to anyone I know for this reason. read more
