This review is for their same day delivery- Be careful if you order more than 1 of the same item. I ordered three different items and a count of 2 for each item. I received only 1 of each item. It seems whoever packed my order just assumed I ordered 1 of everything. I had to contact customer support a few times to get a refund. This Petco is terrible. I saw dead fish and a dead hamster within the first few minutes of my visit. You would think a business based around animals would care, especially when its products include what should be living, healthy animals. We've had such great experiences here! We adopted our dog in January and have taken him through two levels of Petco training (Adult Dog 1 & 2) as well as gotten him groomed here. He's super nervous but LOVES coming to Petco because everyone is so gentle and knowledgable. We work with Sarah for training and I highly highly suggest requesting her!! She has made a HUGE difference in Sunny's attitude and comfort level even just within a few months. You also get tons of coupons if you sign up for training, and when you first get your dog you get a huge packet of coupons. His dog bed was literally free with how many coupons we had #ballin. There are also great seasonal sales for cute accessories and toys. You need this place in your pup's life! read more

Update: Petco left me a message on my cell phone today regarding my review and my dissatisfaction. I feel pretty bad because the girl sounded nearly in tears and they offered to give some complimentary services. My prior review was accurate, but definitely fueled by frustration. In writing reviews I don't think to think of the individual's feelings and perhaps that is unfair, since clearly this groomer takes pride in her work enough to be near tears. I appreciate that she cares so much about her work and wish her all the best in gaining more experience with squirmy pups. I did previously not mention how nice the groomer was. My guess is that she doesn't have much experience with squirming puppies, where as Dan mentioned he had been grooming for years. I'd just like to clarify that I do appreciate that she refused to clip the nails rather than hurt my puppy with her squirming. Also, I know they were busy when I came in, but I do still wish the nails and sanitary trim were done. I will give them a call later in the week and give it another go hopefully with less trauma for the little one. Will write an update after. read more

I love that the staff here are so friendly and interested. It's also fabulous using my Petco reward dollars here, that accumulate and can also be used on the website. Last time we used ten reward dollars towards our purchase! That really makes a difference when you shop here as much as we do. It's also terrific to be able to return online purchases here. How nice to not have to wrap them up for return mailing. We were able to get a refund on treats that our kids didn't like. Sensational! Customer service like that keeps us coming back. This is a good place to stop by if you are in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come to this Petco when there are places like Pet Food Express who I feel truly love animals and believe in/are knowledgable about all of their products. I come here to buy my dog her favorite toy - a fox with no stuffing. I took my golden retriever here for grooming last week and we were the first appointment at 9:30 am. I gave my dog to Kristen which I have been told is the manager/lead for their grooming salon. She told me my dog should be ready in 3 or 4 hours. 3 hours later, Kristen called me saying that my dog is ready, over the phone I asked her how did it go and how was my dog. She said everything was great and he was such a great boy. So I went there, picked him up and again asked the same questions and Kristen said everything was so easy and smooth as my dog was so cooperative and all, so we went home. In two hours after we got home, I see my dog is making this weird noise like he is in pain and tries to reach under his right ear. I just went to check on him and to my surprise I see that under his right ear, he has been shaved all the way down to his skin and there is a bite sign there. I was shocked as I never asked to cut his hair this much all the way shaved to his skin. So I was thinking, why did they shave this area so much. I decided to call and ask them but it was late and I thought I will follow up next day. Upon my follow up I'm talking to Andrew, their store manager as I couldn't get a hold of Kristen. I was feeling so mad and disappointed as they never told me what really happened there when all I wanted was clarity and being honest. I sent Andrew the pictures and he said he will ask Kristen and get back to me as he also thought the pictures looked like a bite sign too. However I needed to take my dog to a vet because at this point I don't know what happened to him and this bite sign has NEVER been communicated with me when I was over the phone with Kristen nor when I was picking him up. The vet also confirmed it is a bite sign and it looked to him like they shaved him this much to his skin because probably he was bleeding and they wanted to see how bad the damage was. I couldn't even believe why they have never told me this. It could be very easy telling me what happened and I would take my dog to emergency immediately. Not that I had to figure that out on my own and be surprised about it. So I'm going back to the store just asking for truth and what really happened to my dog but no one would give me that truth. Andrew told me Kristen will call me either today or tomorrow but to this day I've never received a phone call from her. PetCo district manager Keith, called and said he talked to Kristen and she assured him that it didn't happened there. Seriously!? Do they think I went home and shaved under my dog's ear to his skin on my own? Why would I even do that? I don't even have any dog grooming tools to be able to do this. And while he was with me, he has never been bitten. I asked them to check their cameras and they agreed to it but then Keith told me they don't have cameras inside the salon but only outside by the salon entrance. Even though it was not what they told the very first day, I asked them to check that only camera they have outside as I have been told Kristen was the only one working in grooming that day. I asked to check what were the other people working in the store that went to the salon (obviously not customers but whoever else who was working that day and got to the salon using that entrance) but they never did check even those. All I wanted was honestly and being truthful telling me what happened to him as I knew that state of my dog when I brought him in. I trusted these guys giving my baby to them but never told me what happened to him. They did refund the cost of the grooming and the cost of the visit to the vet. But they would not admit or explain what happened to him. I don't understand why they would pay for a vet if they are sure that nothing happened in their care. I really just want to know the truth about what happened the same as any parent would want to know how their child was injured. Since their version of what happened does not mesh at all with what I know happened when my dog was in my care to make sense, I can not trust the groomers or the management at PetCo. All I wanted was: 1- Clear communications being truthful and I would completely move on but it's obvious you are hiding something that you are willing to do anything but telling me what happened. 2- I asked you to check the cameras either inside or even outside but you guys never did. You could only check who else was getting into grooming area other than normal customers, I mean from people who are working there. If you really care about your pet, I would highly recommend considering other places because they do not take responsibility for what they would do to your pet. Just do a simple google search about what happened to so many dogs after grooming sessions at PetCo which I had to do before taking my dog there. Awful experience with the grooming now twice. Clearly I had an inexperienced groomer who was unable to do my dogs back paws- then asked me to hold her then had another groomer come out and scold her for doing that. Extremely unprofessional. It wasn't the new groomers fault- she was unsure. There needs to be a more experienced groomer to help. In addition there was a huge dog throwing a fit which was stressing my little Gal a ton, and for some reason that dog had to stay there. Never coming back, it caused my old little ga a ton of stress. read more

Although it's a huge store, the variety doesn't match that of Pet Smart. Some of the treats that my dog likes, don't exist at this store. On the plus side, the clothing for my dog is cheaper here than the competition. Plus the dog cookies are a nice touch. My pup only likes one of the cookies but it's nice to see the variety to choose from. I also like the clearance section (when there is one). I've bought items for less than a quarter of it's original price. read more

I love the newly remodeled store! I bring my dog Chewy here and he loves seeing the other dogs and the friendly staff. There is an open bar of treats. You can mix and match. Everything is the same price so dig right in. The real bonus with the newly remodeled store is the HSSV Satellite Center. The center is located in the back left. I love to rescue and adopt small furry creatures (hamster primarily). The center is really nice and the HSSV staff is very knowledgeable. You can walk in and say hello to the kitties too. They are sooo cute! Great place to bring your furry companion. Just keep them on a leash and watch out for the busy parking lot. There are lots of cars zooming by due to the surrounding stores. Not a terrible place to get your dog groomed in my opinion. The only thing I believe they are lacking is toys for dogs, I've been to smaller stores that have a better variety. Every time I have taken my dog here for a cut they have been really good about not overdoing it on the first time. The people who work with the animals all seem to be pretty nice. I pretty much come here just for the groomers now and go elsewhere for some of my other supplies. read more

Took my golden retriever in for a bath and drying grooming service. 4h later, and he's not only soaking wet around his tail, butt, legs and ears (when they told me to come pick him up an hour earlier because he was "a little wet" but ready to go according to the groomer), he was visibly dirty and his hair on his butt, ears and tail was matted (more so than when we came in). I was given additional fees to pay and had to pay and give a tip before I saw the final result. 100/10 would never recommend. I could have done a more professional job in 2h at home. They said he was nervous about hair drying. Well, he is nervous about big noises like most dogs, I cover his ears and dry him at home and he cooperates. A professional groomer never had to leave him soaking wet (or dirty! Did they even give him a bath? or with matted hair. Did they even brush him?), because they know how to handle these situations. Worst grooming job ever, and they even brushed me off when I tried to give them his vaccination records (they are not checking vaccines as stated on the website). I would be fine if he was just "a bit wet" as they told me, but dirty, soaking wet and with matted hair? How can you charge almost 60 bucks for that? read more

My five stars are not for this Petco overall, but strictly for the Grooming Salon and groomers. They are wonderful here. I have tried several Petco grooming salons on the Peninsula and at this one they are always nice, do an excellent job, and keep the place clean. I haven't found it as consistent at other locations (Santa Clara comes close, and gets points for being located at the front of the store, while Sunnyvale is at the back of the store, but the overall experience is better at Sunnyvale). I've been here twice already and they are (a) consistently terrific on the phone when you call to make an appointment, and (b) also consistently terrific in person. Now when you compare Petco grooming to PetSmart, I have found in several cities across the country that the Petco groomers are a little nicer and dog-loving than at PetSmart. I'm not saying this is the case for every store and in every city, but that has been my experience. The downside of Petco grooming, however, is that it is a full $10 more than PetSmart! So I originally was inclined to just settle for PetSmart, since it's just a brush & bath for my lab, rather than, say, a poodle clip, but finding the great folks in Sunnyvale has sold me on this Petco. To clarify my first line above about the five stars being for the Sunnyvale Petco's grooming only and not the overall store: PetSmart just has a better handle on the pet goods business than Petco. I'm not referring to solely the Sunnyvale store, but Petco overall vs. PetSmart. For what I need for my dog in food, treats, rawhide, biscuits and some other items, PetSmart has everything I need whereas Petco has almost virtually nothing -- and of what they do have they are WAY overpriced above what PetSmart charges. I will give Petco huge kudos for finally now having a "Natural Foods" section, which they've done a good job designing. But, folks, they're EXPENSIVE! I can get the same of most of those "healthy" brands at Pet Club for quiet a bit less. (PetSmart is behind in this market.) Someone at PetSmart really was planning using their head, and from a pet owner's perspective. Petco used to be the better of the two chains -- YEARS ago -- and although it is the larger of the two chains, they are way behind on what makes a business like this good. Despite the fact that our boys are super excited and hyper (and it seems Buddy likes to show his gratitude by peeing), they still do their jobs with a smile on their face. Do not bring your pets to the Vetco. It is very unprofessional, it is just a table out in the open of the store. When they weigh your pet they weigh in the carrier and just approximate the weight poorly. They obviously don't care about your pet and are not trained in handling them. Instead of using a leash like most other Petcos they grab your pet by the scruff. Your pet will be scared in the new location so they will pin your pet down by their neck onto a metal table. They will not be gentle with your pet at all. My pet has never cried so much during a vaccine visit. I have been to other Vetcos; they have designated rooms and wear scrubs, wash their hands and are much more gentle with your pet by guiding them with a leash. read more

BEWARE WORMS IN TREAT BAR. I would give negative stars if I could. I came here to get some fresh dog treats from their treat bar. When I got home, I poured the treats inside of a brand new container I just bought and cleaned. When I looked at the treats, I some worms moving around. I didn't notice this when I initially bought the treats and left the store because I was just grabbing and moving along as I usually would. This is the worst thing to possibly find in your beloved pets treats. It's like they never cleaned the treat station in order for something this disgusting to happen. The dishes at the treat station are very hallow and should be easy to clean. This is disgusting and extremely upsetting because if I didn't take a second look at the treats, I could've fed this to my dog. I was very upset and disturbed by this. Do not go to this Petco as they are not sanitary and you could be at risk of other things going terribly wrong. I called the store manager and she said she would throw out the food and clean the station but the fact that this happened in the first place is enough for me to never go back to this store again. read more

Lots of empty shelves and employees didn't look like they were happy. Was here during the pet clinic hours and for the most part wasn't bothered by it...but one large dog was extremely aggressive and territorial. Barked and lunged at every dog that was in sight, scared my poor boy and made him overly reactive when normally he's happy and sweet with other dogs. Employees should have tried to handle situation instead of just standing around watching an aggressive dog make everyone else uncomfortable. read more

So my wife was in your store today Francine the cashier she made a big deal about wife bringing up to the counter a full tray of dog cookies and a big bag of high end dog food ... over 80 fricken dollars worth. She acted like it's a big deal to bring up a tray of COOKIES! Wow ! She was very rude and argumentative to my wife. She done this in the past with my wife over store coupons as well. Seems weird that a retailer like Petco would argue and bitch about a tray of cookies brought up the cashier and a bag of dog food.... you should be DAMN happy we the customers come in and spend money there and help you stay open and pay employees so they can keep a roof over there heads. Though they charged me incorrectly for my grooming, it was promptly fixed by the manager, Sarah. I was charged for a medium dog, even if my dog is a mini schnauzer/terrier. She had matting and needed TLC. Our groomer took very good care of her and shaved her completely, and was able to save her cute face. She was knowledgeable and very sweet and kept me updated on how she took the grooming. I was very happy with my service and will continue to take my precious love here again. read more

I was just in this store shopping for toys for my puppy. My friends and I were being kinda loud and playing with the toys. This is because my puppy that I've been waiting for since December is finally coming home and we're supper happy and excited. Everything was fine but when we got there the cashier straight up asked us "Are you guys stoned? Because everyone here thinks you are." I called the manager and complained. Didn't say the name because I don't want them to get fired but it's pretty infuriating to assume that because we're young and loud we're on drugs. I mean I have low expectations for a place like this but this was just the last straw. This is NOT the first thing you ask someone when checking out. I haven't had an issue in this store but I'm never shopping here again. I have lots of pets and willing to spend a lot of money on food and toys but I will bring my business here no longer. Absolutely pathetic grooming service for cats Rebecca ,the cat grooming associate gave us an appointment at 3 pm but left for lunch at 2:45 pm only to return at 3:30pm . From the beginning it appeared she was reluctant to take any pets for grooming and our assumption was right . Hardly 5 secs after she held my cat,she tells us she is unable to trim the nails of my cat as she tried to bite her This is ridiculous as we were standing right next to her and we never noticed anything like this. Yes my cat was scared a bit because another dog who was being groomed started barking loudly but she never tried to bite anyone . This was just an excuse to take a break from work . This is usually my go-to place for pet supplies and food. In spite of the remodel of the complex to accommodate the new Safeway location, the store inside is pretty smelly and on a few of my visits, dirty and disorganized. Sometimes the stock can be depleted and sold out, especially if they're running an ad or coupon special. This can be frustrating at times. Their prices are competitive to the surrounding stores and sign up for their PALS card for discounts, mailed coupons and after every 10 bags of pet food purchased within a certain time frame, get a free bag. I've never had problems with customer service here, other than long waits at the check out line or lack of cashiers on occasion. In fact, I've found the employees to be helpful and some are quite knowledgeable of food/special dietary needs and OTC medication recommendations. Most of them are very friendly to the animals that come in and you can tell they love pets! Today during a visit to purchase cat litter, which is very heavy (Especially the larger boxes), one of their employees saw me struggling to get it into my cart and rushed over to help. He told me to not lift it onto the check out counter and called someone to put it in my car for me. I truly appreciated the help and initiative he took! I'll return for supplies as needed! read more

After a year and a half of making my own food, suffering through wanting to throw up in my own mouth for making a concoction so VILE that I don't question why I am growing my own maggot farm. I think I was culturing these little buggers SIX MONTHS PRIOR to having my little poison dart frog! ...... somehow, I ended up INFESTING my flightless fruit flies with MITES. WHAT?!?!? How does this even happen? Does anyone even care? Why bother for this beautiful creature that I can't even touch? It's because I love my little Clyde Frog. This is the only location that sells flightless fruit flies from The Fruitless Fly Company. Small, inexpensive, easy to use .... and not infested with mites. I'm not saying that I won't ever culture my own again, I'm just taking a break from maggot breeding. I'll leave that to the experts. read more

I go here almost daily to play with the kittens in the adoption center. My review is based on Carrina, an 18 yr old salesgirl with a little power and a lot of acne. Tonight I went in to buy an Oranda goldfish. I have a large enough aquarium with a fantail and 3 guppies in it. I bought all fish at the very same Petco. Nobody would help me when I came in (I've NEVER been asked if I need any help when I go into the store) and I could not find an associate. After 10 minutes I was frustrated so I started to get the fish myself - I have been an aquarist for years - and Carrina came up and yelled at me. Telling me I can't do that. I explained I was almost done and wanted one of the fish to take home for my 26 gallon tank. She then proceeded to get angry and refuse to sell it to me. I asked for the manager. When I found JJ he was up front with two other sales associates already pulling tills for the night. JJ was the guy that sold me my original goldfish and guppies. I explained the situation and told him I just wanted to buy the fish. He backed up his employee and proceeded to tell me that Petco has policies about selling goldfish and tropical fish together. I asked for a copy. He said he didn't have one. What bull crap. I've had my guppies and goldfish living in harmony for years and the oranda I want actually has ammonia burns on his fins. If I were to take him home he would be fine within a week. You give an 18 year old a little power.....and she thinks she knows everything. Rude. Sad that someone who knows what she is doing is refused service. read more
