I recently brought my dog golden retriever to the Petco in Southington. I had Kyle as a groomer. Before I left my fur baby, I told the staff about an injury that she had on her back leg. My daughter and I went to check back in on our dog and saw something heart stopping through the window. She was falling off the table that the groomer had her on and he was not being very patient with her trying to grab her good back leg. He wasn't even paying attention that her bad back leg was raised in the air. My daughter was crying in the store and wanted to intervene. I will not be going back there again! This is the only place that I have ever taken her to be groomed and will be looking for a new groomer. read more

2 weeks ago I decided to add some fish to my 55 gal tank at home. I bought 7 tetra's and 2 pleco's. A few days later I started to lose some of my fish that I have had for many years. And then every day after I lost one o 2 more. I had to empty and clean my tank completely to clear any sick fish. I am very careful when I add new fish to my tank. I won't be buying anymore at this place for sure. read more

This is my go to spot for my pup's food, clothes, and treats! Every time I come here, I am greeted and asked if I need help with anything. They are always so good with my dog and even offer her a treat. Bambi loves her Whole Hearted Foodie and Core chicken shreds. They are decently priced and always have sales on their clothing too. I got some great deals on raincoats and just some silly clothing for my pup. They even do curbside pick up during COVID. The one downside I would say is that they don't offer that much Foodie with grains in them. Everything is grain free! But, overall, they will have your basics and you can find a cozy outfit too! read more

I brought my puppy Snickers to Petco in Southington, CT for the first time and it was the worst experience for the both of us. His groomer was JESSICA, she's been a "certified" groomer since 2019. I made an appointment for 10am. I got there before the store opened so naturally he was first in line to get a bath, haircut, nail trim (the works). The girl who signed me in said the full service would take an hour and a half. He didn't want to leave my arms and I didn't want to let him go, but he was scruffy and needed a trim. Anyway, 1 1/2 hours, I figured no big deal I dropped him off and ran errands. 11:30am rolls around and I go back in the store and see the second dog brought in was being given a haircut. I figured she may have been a little bit behind so I walked back out and waited in my car. 12:30 comes and I'm annoyed at this point; I make my way back in, walk into the office and ask if my pup is almost ready. JESSICA says, "Actually no, I just got back from vacation and I'm the only one here and am completely behind so he's got about another 45 minutes to go, but since he's bathed you can take him that way". I thought, that's not my fucking problem I have shit to do, but I told her no, that I'd wait but reminded her that I brought him in at 10am. I quietly walk out and wait another hour before she actually calls to let me know he's ready. 4 HOURS LATER. Keep in mind, my pup is small less than 10 pounds and he's a relaxed little guy unless he's made to feel uncomfortable. Fast forward to check out; I didn't notice my puppy's back left foot was bleeding profusely until I saw blood on my sweater while reaching down to get my wallet from my purse. I brought him back to the groomer, and asked why his foot was bleeding and she claims because "he's a puppy, his nails are soft after a trim and will bleed if he's scratching too much while excited". She wouldn't admit she cut his nail TOO MUCH. His hind legs didn't need a nail trim, only the front. It blew my damn mind that she couldn't tell his nails were aligned with the paw; no need for a trim if the nails are. Who gave this girl a certification?? Anyway, she cleaned him up and put something on his foot to stop the bleeding. She was nonchalant and careless as I expressed how frustrated I was. I spoke to the store manager and got a full refund. I should've trusted my pet and my gut instincts. He didn't want to go and I didn't like leaving him there, it didn't feel right. I hope this is dealt with appropriately. Brought our dog Millie in for a bath and trim. I liked that you could make an appointment online and that we could drop her off and run errands for a couple hours. She needed a bath and this location had an opening right away at 9:30AM. Jacqueline was our groomer and really sweet! She took the time to learn about Millie and ask specific questions on her first visit there. Like any dog in a new place, she was a little hesitant at first. The grooming area is pretty small at this location and it was Jacqueline and another groomer there that morning. We were told it would be about 2hrs. We got breakfast, did a little shopping and came back to check on her. They have a window so you could see into the grooming area but the dogs will get nervous/too excited if they see you, especially if they're on the table getting trimmed. We peaked in to see how she was doing and Millie was calm and looked very comfortable as she got trimmed! It took a little closer to 3hrs for her to be done but all in all, a great experience! I do think they could have trimmed her face a bit more but we didn't notice until we were home. We will definitely be back to Petco when we need a quick bath & trim! 0/10!!! ANIMAL ABUSE. My girlfriend and I stopped in and were both horrified at what we saw. For context, we are both long time reptile and amphibian owners. I nursed a dying hatchling tortoise back to health a few years ago who had shell rot and a respiratory infection. My gf has been a snake owner for years. First we saw a snake that had shed stuck over its whole face, eyes, and patches down its body. I couldn't get a good picture of it because by the time the worker left he had gone into his hide. But we alerted the worker and she said they had tried everything for weeks trying to help him get it off. Not sure if that's true or not because it's really not that hard to get shed off, and it was concerning that they were selling him in this state. The worker even encouraged us to buy him?? Anyways next we looked at the tortoises. One of the workers handed me a yearling tortoise and I held him for a minute. I almost started crying because there was a thick white film over his eyes, he couldn't even open them. He was barely moving while I was holding him and his shell was very obviously severely rotting. His shell even felt soft to me when I was holding him. The other tortoise in the tank looked better, had his eyes open at least. But not only the fact that they think these animals are okay but that they're selling them like this!? We brought this up to the same worker asking if his eyes were okay (they're obviously not) and she said he's fine just needs to soak. I am so disgusted and saddened by what I saw today. I'm not even sure what to do or what will help. I downloaded yelp just to leave this review because I know I have to do something. If anyone knows who I can report this to please let me know. I hope this helps someone, and can help prevent this from happening to another animal. This is NOT okay. read more

I wouldn't even give it a star. I hear so many stories about them mistreating their animals and I just witnessed it. My boyfriend and I were looking at the reptiles and we saw the bearded dragons had poop covering the bottom of the cage and then we found a dead baby bearded dragon laying on his back behind a tree. We told the lady working and at first she ignored us and was rude when we told her but she didn't seem surprised at all. My heart is hurting for those animals. read more

We brought my dog here because she needed her nails clipped and a little trim. Keep in mind we said a trim, not a full cut like the groomer, Jessica did. She cut my dogs fur in a weird way too. She cut off the fur on her chest, her paws, her underbelly and the fur on the back of her arms, but didn't touch her tail. It also took her 2 1/2 hours for her to take care of my dog. Will not be returning after that experience. read more

If I didn't have to get my dog his food at Petco I would avoid the place. When I got my dog the breeder had him on Natural Balance and I was never able to switch him off because of his sensitive GI system. I hate going to the place because they have special prices for "card holders" and no matter how many times I sign up I'm never in the system. I went to buy some new vines for my gecko's terrarium and crickets and the lady working asked if I needed help and I asked for crickets and she told me my gecko doesn't eat crickets nor do they feed theirs crickets. She then had me wait 15+ minutes and I saw the geckos for sale consuming said crickets. Another customer asked for crickets and she paged someone for him. Then after waiting she comes over and shows me food and says this is all they eat while there was a sign above her listing crickets as a main food source which i pointed out and she continued to tell me they don't eat them. She was very rude and I left empty handed and dissatisfied- I'm concerned for the animals giving the employee's false knowledge. read more

My amazing dog (I'm not one of those delusional people- he really is amazing and haaaandsome...) was literally ignored by the staff that I encountered. if i could give this place negative stars i would. brought two of my dogs here to get the breed specific cut and when the two of them came around the corner i wasn't satisfied at all. later on after getting them home and taking a closer look you could tell the heads were uneven on both dogs all over the place, the cut was not the cut my dogs are supposed to have, and the cut in general was super choppy. not only did was this bad enough, they had the dogs for over 5 hours and did not get a call, and every time we called them it would ring until it went to voicemail. very disappointed, never coming here again and would NEVER recommend them to anybody either. Do not take your cat here for grooming. One star bc my pet was ready within the time frame specified. He had several mats on his stomach, which I knew were going to have to get shaved off. I did not expect to get him back looking like someone who had never used clippers before had shaved him. His ruff around his neck (which was not matted) is also uneven now. My cat is shy, so this was not the ideal place to get him groomed (lots of other dogs, staff using a shop vac). When I picked him up he had urinated in his carrier and I ended up having to bathe him at home. I will be seeking out a privately owned experienced groomer if he mats up again. read more

I had an appointment to have my dog groomed today. I went and was told that the groomer was on a break. I tried calling thinking maybe the groomer would pick up the phone while on break. No such luck. So I waited for 15 minutes and then I left. There was only 1 line open with 5 customers at the front counter and no one else to ask a question so I called the main store once I was in my car. The person who answered the phone found the groomer and asked what happened. So they confirmed I DID have an appointment, but no one told her before she went on break. I asked if there was an appointment book or electronic record and was told 'yes'. SO how do you take a lunch/break without checking to see if you have any appointments? They did offer me to come back at that very moment. I said no thank you. How do I know you are not going to forget my dog in the bath or tied up somewhere? No offer of a coupon or a discount. And no real explanation. It's sad because I live right down the street but I will be exclusively using their main competitor from now on. read more

If I could give this place a zero I would. This place has finally lost a customer for life. This was not my first negative experience here, but I've finally had enough of the incompetence at this location. Went here tonight to buy crested geckos. Went home empty handed due to the fact that the people working here at 8pm on Monday night 9/16/19 had absolutely no idea what they were doing or talking about. It's really a shame when people who work with animals (after all petco is a pet shop, so it isn't unreasonable to expect the employees to know something about animals) defend themselves and other employees for having absolutely no knowledge about the animals they are supposed to be caring for and selling. I dealt with a girl who didn't know how many geckos were even in the enclosure, told me that an enclosure (with the same exact dimensions as the enclosure with "crested geckos" labeled on it) would not fit a crested gecko when in fact it would, the enclosure they were being kept in wasn't the proper height for the 4 they had enclosed to begin with, didn't know if the two I wanted were healthy or got along but then seemed to decide in her head that wait, yes, they are healthy and get along, as if she magically found answers to my questions based on how I reacted, and also did not know if the adult pair I was about to purchase was male or female when I inquired. After 4 months a crested gecko can be sexed and at the age these ones were, it would have been as simple as me looking if I were given the opportunity. Instead I was told that I would need to be an expert to know, and also that if I checked on google it would be simple to find, which is clearly contradictory and an excuse for being unlearned in the area this employee is intended to work. If a parent comes in to buy a pair, isn't it important for those parents to know before bringing a breeding pair home to their unsuspecting family? When asked this question Bob told me that in his 24 years of working at petco, no one has ever known the sex of the animals. That is amazing and impressive that a person can go that long working in a field without ever learning basic information about their livelihood. And Bob went on to defend the unknowledgeable staff rather than agree that they could all use more training, due to the fact that this is their job. I'm disgusted that instead of trying to learn something, the staff is complacent in being ignorant and untrained, and believe defending their behavior is more important than the customer, and more importantly the animal. The animal is truly the only one that will suffer if people like these two are allowed to continue working with animals they know nothing about. It would have been so simple to say hey, you know, maybe our staff could do a little more training, and become more educated about the animals we sell. Instead Bob excused and defended his employee, and because I have experienced this same behavior here before, and have seen knowledgeable employees get fired from this corporation, the last time I spent $ there was the LAST time I'll EVER spend $ there. Petco is just that, a company. It's not about the animals, it's just about the dollars. read more

Went in about 8:30 on a Sat. night. Only customer in the store. Spent 15 minutes looking at fish. (No employees available) I noticed many dead fish in various stages of decomposition. On my way out, an employee asked my if I found what I needed. I told her about all the dead fish. She said "There shouldn't be any dead fish, we check periodically." Well.... let me show you. They paged the fish guy to come over, and he said "I wasn't here this morning." It's 8:45 at night. These fish have been dead for hours. By the way... two out of four employees in the store were too busy playing with their phones to care what was going on. (One of which was the manager on duty) read more

Wow! Amazing staff. My dog Toots and I went into the store on 01/18. i was greeted as soon as we walked in. We were offered help multiple times. When we were checking out, the young lady with short hair told me about the Petco rewards program and gave me a coupon book for Toots. Saved me a bunch of money. We also talked about Toots food and what food would be good for his sensitive stomach. I will definitely be back. read more

I had bought crickets to feed my reptiles which were overly priced but i was feeding a steppe runner that i purchased from them that was on clearance because "it had been there for 3 years" but i thought it was odd because i am a regular costumer and had never seen him before anyways i feed him the crickets and he started acting very weird and his arms got stiff and was very bloated, he was dead the next morning also i fed my fire belly toad some of the crickets and he got very bloated and also passed away at the moment i did not think it was the crickets but a month goes by a get more crickets to feed my bearded dragon and he started having a seizure and pooped uncontrollably then was dead shortly after and he also got really bloated i soon then realized there must be something wrong with the crickets but i was very sad to have lost some of my reptiles because of this i never called and complained just will not go back there for crickets again. :( read more

Bought a bird here and it died in two days. I have had birds all my life and they openly accused me of putting it by a drafty window and that must be why it died. They also said that it had been there for a while so I had to have done something wrong. They offered to replace it but after that accusation, I just got my money back.
