Petco in Layton normally cuts my Shih Tzu's hair and grooms him. My dog is 2 years old and tends to naw at brushes and hands, but never bites hard. Today they wanted to reschedule our appointment 50 minutes before the appointment because a new groomer was afraid of the dog. Granted this is the first time Ive heard of a complaint. These groomers deal with dogs all the time, why are they afraid of a little Shih Tzu? Makes no sense and why did they hire someone so brand new to grooming, they cant groom a shih tzu sized dog? I understand being afraid of a Chow, but not a Shih Tzu. The poor planning on their part, the inexperience of their team, and their quick-to-shave my dog when they find some matted hair, have led me to cancel all business with Petco and seek grooming elsewhere. I live less than two miles away from this location and I'm not very pleased with this place. The associate that works in the fish department acts like they're too busy to help me and doesn't even acknowledge that I'm there. Plus this store charges 10 cents per bag if I want one for my purchases. I now take my business to Petsmart nearby because they at least ask me if I need help plus they acknowledge me when I walk in the store. I have driven to the Petco at the Farmington station mall to shop because they are friendlier and ask me if I need help. read more

I love Petco! I purchased a bearded dragon here, along with his supplies. I got a really good deal as they always seem to have really good promotions. The employees are very approachable and knowledgeable! I love coming in to buy my bearded dragon's food. The crickets are always alive and well taken care of. They also offer me water for the crickets which I really appreciate! I love the adoption days and coming in and seeing the adorable animals who are looking for their furever homes. See what I did there? ;) It is fun to bring my bearded dragon in with me when I shop for him. He is welcomed, and I always get asked if he can be pet or questions about him that I love answering. After dropping my dog off at the groomers in which they complimented how well his coat looked ( very little matting). I picked my dog up 5.5 hours later only to find him shaved bald. I got in the car and cried. I can't believe I paid $100 for this horrible cut. I could have shaved him bald myself. I took him to professionals to get a well styled and trimmed cut. I even showed them a picture is what I wanted. I'm almost speechless. I'm so upset. I will not return and would never recommend this service to any doodle owner!! If I could give this place a half star I would. My pet has been going to get groomed since he was 12weeks old he is now 2yrs and knows the drill when it comes to grooming. I have never had any problems with other PETCO locations. We recently moved to the area and this is the closest location to us which should serve as convenient unfortunately we've had too many poor experiences to be okay with taking him back in. The first was a bald spot left on his back leg in the middle of winter. The second was the nail being trimmed too short and him bleeding a bit along with skipping his dew claws after we expressed concern about them being missed as they could grow inward and really irritate and hurt him. And this last time (yesterday) the nail was trimmed down to his vein he was bleeding when picked up they put powder to stop the bleeding but we got home and immediately he was bleeding everywhere. I understand things happen, but my pet has never had a nail trimming issue before and in both instances it was this location different groomers which lets me know proper training is not being done. Very disappointed, and worse my pet might now face challenges with getting a nail trimming or even just going to the groomers in the future, because proper training was not done. I have two small dogs. One of them has a special diet due to a poultry allergy requiring us to buy food that isn't available at the big box stores or regular supermarkets. Petco always has what I need in stock. The variety of small pet supplies makes it a convenient one stop shop to make sure my dogs are taken care of. This location is easy to access off of antelope drive. The parking lot was not the easiest to navigate during the peak hours. The store is a bit smaller than other locations but seems to be well maintained. It seems a bit older than some of the other stores I've been to but the staff was friendly and helpful. read more

After the experience I had in the store, I will never go back to this store. I went in with my kids to get a pet fish after we'd studied about them. The lady would not let me buy a goldfish unless I spent $100 on the tanks. Since when can you not just buy some goldfish like they used to at the carnival. I had my arms full of products I planned to buy but because of her rudeness I left. Never had a bad experience at Petsmart! I was excited because I had a coupon for a free bag of dog food and when I got to the register, the cashier had the audacity to ask me why I was purchasing this specific brand of food. I asked if there was a reason I shouldn't and she went on to explain the "harmful" ingredients and recommended to get a bag of food that was close to price. I said no and wanted to go through the purchase. She then told me to go home and do my research on the food. I ended up leaving without purchasing the food. An absolute mess - boxes and product/supplies everywhere but on the shelves, employees talking to each other but not bothering to ask if customers need any help, and I'm pretty sure I was charged more for the items I purchased than the posted price. Received an additional charge at the groomer today. They said it was because they were unable to kennel my dog, mind you I was less than 5 minutes away from the time they called me to say he was done. When asking about the "Express fee" since we didn't discuss that when I dropped him off, one of the groomers stated they told me last time I had my dog there that I would be charged that fee. No such conversation was ever had. My husband was with me last time we took our dog there & he agreed that we were never told such a thing. The groomer wasn't about to back down though--full of the good ol "I'm right" attitude that everyone loves so much. I told them I'll pay their fee but I will never be bringing my dogs to them again. $12 charge has lost Petco hundreds of our dollars in the future from grooming, food, etc. Good work Layton team. read more

Ok, so this store is really 3 stars sometimes and 5 stars at others. They don't seem to have a consistent rating for me so I've averaged it. 5 star reasons: usually well stocked, clean, reasonable prices for a big chain, nice layout, SUPER nice customer service! (The customer service here has been the nicest out of the Petco in Layton, PetSmart in Layton, PetSmart in Riverdale, and the Petco in Riverdale! So, way to go Petco in Layton!!) 3 stars: they don't have enough staff. I've often had to search around and wait several minutes to wait my turn for someone who worked there to help me. If they fixed this problem they'd be 5 stars all the way as the 5 star points greatly out number the 3 star points. But having to wait 5-10 minutes when needing help will make many people walk out frustrated so 3 stars is fair for this consideration. read more

This is the worst Petco I've been to. There's stuff everywhere and a whole bunch of opened boxes with stuff in it like they're to lazy to unbox it and put it where it goes. Everything was unorganized and just thrown everywhere. My boyfriend had stepped in dog feces that had been there before we got there and it got all over the isle. Several people had told the workers but no one cleaned it up, one of the workers even went over there and just looked at it and then never went back to clean it. read more

I love taking my dog here! He has really bad separating anxiety, and gets really scared while he's getting groomed. This time was even worse then it had been before. He was so scared in the kennel trying to claw his way out he ended up hurting his paw a little. And instead of letting him say in the kennel and freaking out the groomer took him out and sat with until I got there. It's such a small thing that I think made such a difference with his grooming experience. I love Petco and there friendly staff and will continue to bring my dog forever. read more

I went to the store after searching all the other local stores for a certain litter box I needed that night. Found the in store price was twice what the online price was. I received a hair cut for my yorkie and the groomer was named Brooke. She was horrible. My dog had red eyes and I came home and noticed his nail was bleeding. He looked horrible. Nice store , employees treat you well , lots of things , only issue is sometimes if there's more than a few customers it can take forever to get help . Also there's no system to get in line to wait for help so you gotta follow the employee helping the customer stalker like and give other people dirty looks so they don't jump ahead , then you find something to look at and suddenly the employee is helping someone else ! Petco is the place to go for your pet related needs. I love how organized and compartmentalized Petcos are. It's as exciting as visiting the Zoo but for pets! There are sections for birds, fish, reptiles, and other critters. I like how there is information about the animals that lists things such as their scientific name and other details. I love how they have a grooming center. I am always taking my dog there to get its knots out in in its fur. He always comes back smelling great and seems like he had a great time. There is always such a variety of pet items to choose from for so many different kinds of pets. There are items there that I haven't ever seen at other stores. I am always checking their on sale items for my dog too. I have walked in to see employees cleaning cages and helping customers. They seem to respect both pets and people. Petco is a unique and cool place to shop at and I think you will enjoy the experience very much. :) read more

The pets are not cared for. They don't even know anything about the animals they sell. IV bought animals here twice just to save them it makes me sad. They definitely don't pay attention to there animals. A cat had been there for almost 2 months and one cat had a back paw that was bleeding. I asked how long the cat had been there and if I could buy all of the cats some treats and toys, I was declined and told the cats had been there for only a week. False, one cat had been there before I saved an animal there a month ago... It really makes me sad. For animal enthusiast's there lack of empathy makes me want to report them and take all there pets to a shelter who would surprisingly take better care of them. They don't know anything about exotic animals or ferrets which I prefer. I bought one a few weeks ago that was not well cared for and obviously was not around people enough and it showed on her behavior. read more

I usually take my dog to Petsmart grooming but the last two times his regular groomer missed a few toenails and a very uneven shave it's very unnoticeable and it looks like crap I mean I could've just saved 40+ dollars and shaved him myself because it would've looked the same crap penis that I received there so the same groomer has been kind of not paying attention or likes their job but either way and my dogs in the kennel there for a while my dog is special needs so I came across Petco grooming not only do they have a speedy service for special needs dogs like my copper meaning he will not be sitting in a kennel getting stressed out and freaked out to the point he might go into a seizure so with Petco they got them in the first in the morning and they try to make this service speedy or so instead of the normal four hours I get him in less than two which really helps his anxiety and they give him a free scarf bandanna Petsmart used to do that but they stop doing that years ago and they actually charge now for the bandanna so I love the little things that Petco offers and for the Holidays they have a gingerbread spray so I am very excited that my dog will smell like a gingerbread cookie coming out of the groomers with a cute scarf he got for free read more

So my mom is here visiting and my son(1.5 years) is obsessed with fish so we thought we'd get him a couple. We go to petco and talk to one of the sales guy about getting a tank and all the supplies we'd need and we are looking around trying to decide which fish would be best and the best tank and everything else. So after running around with my toddler and getting all the supplies we need we get the guy again to help us get a water conditioner and pick out our fish! Then he tells us and I quote "I can't actually sell you the fish for a month!!" We were in the store for an hour with my toddler getting all the perfect supplies and he then tells us we can't buy two goldfish!!! I used to work at petco and never heard of this!!!
