Honestly, I was disappointed at the bare minimum amount of products for cats, especially kittens! The entire store seems dedicated to dogs and there's one tiny section way off in the back right, with just a few aisles of cat food, litter, products and almost nothing at all specifically for kittens. Also, most of the canned food is sold individually instead of in variety packs and only limited amounts from select brands. In a pinch, I would go there because it's not far and the only pet store near me, but I'd rather take the drive to the PetSmart in Downers, on 22nd (or Butterfield), because they have a lot more to offer and have several brands specifically offering kitten food, and the canned food, for several brands of kitten food, comes in multi/variety packs. Also, the guy at PetCo who was working that area, not sure if he was a manager, it seemed like it, he was VERY rude! Basically had the attitude of "well, that's all we have, so..." he might as well have told me to go elsewhere, which, as I said, I will. The cashiers at PetCo on the other hand, were very friendly and greeted everyone as they entered, and were friendly to each customer at checkout. Other than the PBS cartoon Martha Speaks I don't know of any talking dogs so I can't understand why put me & my dog in a room only to then take my dog in the back away from me to be seen by the doctor where I can't ask questions or provide further details, then I'm at the mercy of a tech to accurately convey the doctors findings, & should I have follow up questions the tech has to run back & get an answer. This is the problem with these types of chain veterinary clinics. You don't develop a relationship with one vet who knows you & your pet, but just random vets who obviously don't have the time to meet with you as they hide behind a closed-off area. This is an updated review! I have now been shopping at this location for several years and have been consistently happy with the service and selection. The staff is friendly and helpful. When I took one of my dogs there for one of his Bucket List trips (he was diagnosed with terminal cancer) I told the staff about the reason for his visit and the staff member teared up (so kind and caring). It was probably one of the most frustrating experiences I've ever had. I went into Petco to purchase a few community fish and was subjected to intense questioning about the contents of my tank and the species of fish I have. I told the salesperson I wanted to replace a few guppies, but he refused to sell me any fish since I wouldn't divulge the specifics of my tank. Moreover, he also prevented another woman from purchasing fish because, in his opinion, her tank wasn't large enough. She explained that she had bought the tank from Petco just a week earlier. His response was simply to tell her about a sale on larger tanks. She, too, walked out in frustration. I would recommend seeking out a more customer-friendly fish store, one with less arrogant salespeople. Because of this experience, Petco has lost my patronage, and I'm a customer with both a 160-gallon saltwater tank and a freshwater tank. Overzealous upselling can have significant negative consequences in the long run. read more

I was shopping for a brush for my puppy and was walking around for a while trying to find someone. I finally found the section, and the man working there was doing inventory or something. I asked him about the brushes, and he mumbled something and said to ask someone else rather than finding someone to help me. I walked around and couldn't find anyone, then came back just to look at them myself. I politely asked the man if he would mind if I looked at the brushes (because he was in the way). He ignored me, and when I said excuse and that I was going to grab one to look at, rather than take the hint and move away, he let me grab the brush, and then literally moved to the left right in front of me, directly cutting me off. I know some people don't like to be interrupted when they're working, and clearly this man is one of those people, but he needs to be in a different line of work. In a store, customers should be part of the job, not treated as if they're in the way. I actually had to go to the front desk and tell them that the person working there was preventing me from looking at the brushes and asking if someone could help. Someone did walk over there with me, and as soon as we approached, the guy moved out of the way. The person who did help me was very nice, which is why I didn't give one star. Usually I look at store reviews before I go shopping. This time I didn't because I was in a hurry. Had I read about the manager everyone's writing about on here I wouldn't have gone. Unfortunately had to give a 1 star rating to leave a review. Came into petco today looking for a female short haired teddy bear. Asked an associate to assist to view the hamster. I didn't get his name, he opened the enclosure and lifted the house. Not attempting to move the bedding for a small animal I could've purchased but put it back down and stated it wasn't happening right now and that the hamster was "hissing" under the bedding so he couldn't take it out. Petco, where the pets go! Once upon a time I had one sweet boxer dog and she loved to shop at Petco...like literally pick out a new toy and sample the treats. Well, since she got 2 little dog brothers (yes, i have 3 dogs...yikes!), she really doesn't get to go shopping much anymore since it would be a huge headache to take 3 dogs to Petco. Stopped in to buy Natural Balance dog food, which was on sale...woo hoo! At the checkout, Pam remembered my boxer dog even though she hasn't been there in a couple of years! Amazing! I love a store that stocks our special dog food and remembers me and my dog. 5 stars for great customer service. I like shopping here. It's a tidy store, products are organized and there is a huge selection of everything. Lots of toys on sale too! **TIP- Luv My Pet vaccinations comes to this Petco every few weeks for super low cost vaccinations. You do have to wait in line for a good 45min with your dog or cat which can be a hassle, but the doctors are nice and it's great to pay a fraction of the price for vaccinations. During my most recent visit I was really pleased and impressed with the service I received in the fish department. A young man by the name of Reese was working and was very knowledgeable and patient. I went in with my nephew and we had a variety of questions, which Reese was able to answer quite adeptly. I'm adding an extra star to this review for its prime location. First off, for corporate, these pictures made me laugh. Those are so far from what this store looks like. Maybe update the store or don't have those on your yelp page. I couldn't look at the animals. Just read the other reviews. I saw a ferret and got sad for him. My cousin just rescued a ferret. Not from here obviously but she needed nail clippers so this is where I went at 7:30 on a Friday night. I decided to check out their prices for my dog's food and coats/boots. He's a 2 yr old Great Dane. I normally go to a small place in Lombard, Ruff Life, for his food and they are fantastic but he eats a bag of $30 food a day so I wanted to check. First I was looking at the clothes and a lady with short hair, like Kate plus 8 vibe, and normal clothes was putting stuff back I thought she was a customer because she looked at me and said nothing not even a smile. They only had small stuff so I went to look at boots which were mainly rubber, if there were more I wouldn't know because there was no one around to help. So I went to look for the food and I noticed the lady putting cat cans on a shelf and she sees me walk up and down the back twice clearly looking for something I notice her zip up says petco so I say "Excuse me do you have Primal?" She says no never stops messing with the cans, so I ask "do you have Stella and Chewy's" she goes "What" Apparently she was done with the conversation after my first question so I ask again and she's says "no you need to go to a boutique store" and that's it back to the cans. Boutique store... like Pet Supplies Plus? Lol these aren't crazy small brands I'm asking for. I'm assuming she's a manager of some sort by how she was dressed but yeah thanks for reminding me one of the 1,000 reasons I never come here. I spend $300 a week on my guy I'm more than happy to give it to Ruff Life they appreciate when you shop there. I regret trying to save a buck. I wish I didn't buy the ferret nail clippers here. They can respond all they want to this. Take it as constructive criticism and seriously change your attitude you work at a pet supply store store in customer service/retail no place for that. I've been extremely happy with Petco's grooming salon. This was either the 3rd or the 4th time we've been there with my senior Golden Retriver. Lots of reasons why: the parking is ample for Payton's ramp, I'm able to take her on my lunch break and pick her up after work, everyone has been pleasant and seem to care. First incident happened on a Saturday, I chalked it up to, it's Saturday and crazy busy... maybe over booked even. Ok, we all have our bad days. They never called to tell me she was ready, and it was especially hot that Saturday, so I didn't want her to be there any longer then needed. We weren't home an hour before the itching started.... and never stopped. She felt dirty, that doggish residue, that all dog owners are familiar with. So, I called about 4 days later. I was ticked and still didn't want to come off as rude, but I paid around $85.00 in treatments and tips... I expected her to be clean. Meanwhile, the itching hasn't stopped. Jamie who took my call, was extremely helpful and kind, but she didn't actually put me on "hold" when she stopped to talk to (later identified as) Candy. I could actually hear the "eye roll", when Candy was asked if she remembered Payton the Golden Retriever from Saturday. (no verbal response) Jamie then explained she's (Candy) will have to rewash her, I then heard Candy say "I guess". However, I'm going to give Candy the benefit of the doubt, because that's just who I am! Second bath with Candy.... The worst decision I've ever made for my child... to date. The unscented, aloe, and oatmeal bath was the reason why Payton was itching, has to be, right? And also the knicked anal gland, thought the vet. Candy's last words to me... "I really let her soak in it!" We were't home an hour before Payton was covered in a 1,000 little blisters. A week later: $95 in grooming & tips, $250.00 in vet bills, panic & fear. This particular Petco seems to be a step above most of the others I've visited. Ever since the Evil Puppies™ entered my life, I've been shopping here for toys, leashes, treats and other assorted things. The variety of items they carry is very good, and the friendliness of the staff is stellar. Prices are a little heftier than I can find online, but to actually have the items in front of you instead of waiting around a week is always a bonus. Once I had the anti-shed bath treatment done on the girls, and they were very thorough and gentle with them. They came out looking fluffed and polished and smelling of doggie perfume. The young lady who took care of them obviously had a love for animals and it showed in her work and her treatment of our little bundles of evil. Pixel and Fedora definitely approve. read more

I've been going to this petco for as long as i can remember. From fish supplies to bearded dragon food and live worms. I am done. I purchased 5 fish 5 days ago, and about a day after i bought them, 2 angelfish died. I called today.. Because i work a lot and had no time to go.. And they said i need to bring the dead fish to get a refund.. Well.. Im not sure how 2 decomposing fish would help them decide what happened. *Update* BEWARE. Everything went downhill after Eden left. Even though it's included in the price of a groom, my dogs anal glands have not been expressed since Eden left!! This resulted in an expensive and painful anal gland rupture. Since my dog isn't the type to ever scoot across the floor, or even lock his butt, I didn't realize he was having any problem till it was too late. It was HORRIFIC!! I will never take my baby here again I can say that they did admit fault and they paid the vet bill. But that far from makes it better. ______________________________________ Today was a very sad day. Ever since we moved to the area, my dogs favorite groomer has been Eden at Petco in Elmhurst. However, today was his last groom with her as she's moving away. She's the only one he's ever willingly, and joyfully, gone to! But no worries, because the whole staff here is wonderful! I came into your store in Elmhurst to get a collar and a helpful staff member, Christina was great. She was the first person I met that was friendly and didn't seem inconvenienced when you had a question. At that time, she also told me about your training classes. What a life saver. I enrolled my puppy at 8 weeks in a class and was delighted with how much he learned so I enrolled in 3 more classes. In the last 3 months I told 3 friends about your training classes and my experience with Christina and when they went in, they were told she was gone. So they chose to go somewhere else. I too have chosen to go back to pet supplies plus. You allowed or let go of your most helpful salesperson and a outstanding trainer. Herbie is usually very well behaved and hasnt pee peed in a house or store until this tragic day.It started off with him jumping out of car in the parking lot, tearing off his collar and running for the petco door. This store gave me the absolute worst service ever. I went in there on a Saturday night at 8pm to buy some fish. It took literally, 20 minutes to get some service. I bought 5 neon tetra fish and a rainbow shark and was on my way. By the time I got home (a 10 minute drive), two of the neone tetra fish were already dead. But whatever, fish die. Sooo, the very next morning, I went to return the two dead fish. I got to Petco as soon as the store opened, at 10am. I got service right away this time, but the girl had the worst attitude ever. This girl demanded a water sample from my tank, EVEN THOUGH, I never even put these two fish in my tank to begin with since they were dead before I even got the chance to put them in my tank. She was very rude and acted like she was doing me a favor by replacing the two fish. I was actually going to buy more fish, but I didn't want to deal with this horrible employee anymore. And the worst thing is, is that the two replacement fish died too! Don't buy fish from here!! Better yet, don't come here at all. You're better off going to a mom & pop shop where they actually take care of their animals, and the service is 100% better. read more

I recently started taking our precious golden retriever to Petco. I too had Eden and loved her for the first grooming and was sad that she left. Last week we had Jamie as our groomer and she is fantastic! She is very nice, reminded me that I needed to buy the aloe shampoo I mentioned when I called, and finished in a few hours. Chloe looks gorgeous! She could be a show dog, she smells wonderful and her paws are perfectly trimmed. I could not be happier with Jamie and look forward to seeing her again. I just checked my receipt from a week ago and saw that there was a $2 donation made when I bought the collar. The manager said I selected it on the PIN pad and selected $2. I love Petco, just not this one. As the proud owner of three adopted Brittanys, I particularly admire their corporate commitment to adoption from shelters and rescue groups through their Shelter Partner Program, so I go to Petco before Petsmart, even though the two competitors are almost always located within a block or two of each other! This particular Petco however, is the worst pet shop of any kind that I have ever been to. The store is so filthy that it smells bad, the merchandise is in a shambles, and they are nearly always out of whatever it is I am looking for, things like beef knee bones or braided bully stix, that any other Petco always has in stock. If you look at the tropical fish area, there are often dead, rotting fish floating in the tanks. I know that fish die, but I'd expect the staff to remove them before they start to decompose! The staff seems nice, and certainly well-intentioned, but rarely has a clue if you ask them about a product or service. They seem both poorly-trained and over-worked, since the place seems to be perpetually short-staffed. Although this is the Petco nearest my home, I go to the one in Darien for whatever I need for my dogs and fish. read more

I'm a small business owner fan, but the store is always stocked up with all I need so whatevs....it happens. The have coupons, sales, and a points system that gives you $ back, and almost anything you are looking for. I like anyplace I can bring my dog so this works for me. Petco in Elmhurst is always clean, plenty of food choices, toy choices, bedding....its a treat for my little Ziggy anytime we come here. She sniffs to her hearts content! The customer service is good, it's either high-school or college kids, or management and they have always been helpful. We have been a 5+ customer of this store and I've never had a bad experience. Great PetCo location! Way better than the PetCo in Wood Dale that I used to go to. The layout at this store is really shopper-friendly. You can find what you're looking for fairly quickly. I like that they divide up their toys and beds in relation to what kind of dog you have and their activity level. For example, they have beds for older dogs, snugglers, dogs that sleep on their side, etc. It makes it easier for you to narrow down what kind of bed you should get. Same thing with the toys. They have toys that are good for chewers, toys that promote teeth cleaning, training, address boredom, and again, some for snugglers. Now I don't have to waste time in the store trying to guess what my dogs might like. We did buy a pretty expensive toy that claims to be durable, but my dog tore it apart in five minutes. This isn't PetCo's fault since they just sell the product. I have contacted the toy company to see what they can do for me. But I did talk to a cashier who said they might be able to refund us if we call the next day and ask to speak to a manager. We bought a new toy in the meantime that has been working great for our big chewer so that's a relief. I'm glad to finally have given this PetCo a shot. It's much closer to PetsMart and is really clean! read more
