Stopped in today to pick up some Frontline, they were out of my weight category in the locked case, so sweet register girl went to the back to get for me. While waiting I went to play with the kittens in the front encased kennel. Omg, the stench of ammonia and feces was overbearing inside. The tiny litter box being used by three kittens was overflowing with feces and urine, so much so it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a week. Petco, if you are going to sell live animals, take care of them. This was appalling. I see a new comment from Petco, regarding following up. Please see other remarks from reviewers regarding same issue. This is an ongoing issue. I won't be back as a Customer. My view of Petco has diminished greatly. This took too long to write because it shouldn't have happened in the first place. So back in March my mom and I took my dog to the groomers to get his nails trimmed and buffed, I normally come here as I felt it was safe and he could hope up on the table himself as he doesn't like being picked up. So first I walk in there was a lady in there grooming a dog she didn't even bother to say welcome or even acknowledge us it was off putting and rude, so we sat their for about 5 minutes still nothing and there was a lady behind us waiting to pick up her dog also until a girl walked out from the back (she just started there not too long ago) she was really friendly and greeted us and processed to ask the other lady if this was one of her dogs she said no that was the only time she ever spoke. So I told her I was just coming in for a nail trim, she said ok had me sign the paper work and stuff and I handed off my dog she said it should only be about 5-10 minutes max so I said ok and told her I'd be back. (NOTE he wasn't acting crazy he was excited and playful he's still a puppy) We left out the store to wait in the car but like 3-5 minutes later the lady from before knocked on the window she told us that the girl asked us to come back in because supposedly he tried to bite her. First off it was definitely unprofessional of her to tell another client's business, secondly we've only been gone 5 minutes what happened? So we walk back in the brings him out a processed to tell us that she took him to the back and tried to get him on the table he turned back at her so she tried again and this time he supposedly tried to nip/bite her and that's where she drew the line. I said ok that's never happened before we always come here and he always see someone different.She recommended that we take him to the vet to get MUZZLED to get his nails done I then told her, he's never been muzzled for anything but no she keeps insisting. Eventually she apologized and said she tried. When we left my dog was really reactive you could tell he was irritated , he isn't this jumpy it was really strange. This is where I thought did something just happen and she just swept it under the rug. He was irritated for like 3 hours I was now getting panicky, he eventually calmed down but I could tell he was just not ok. I called up the next day asked to speak to the grooming manger guy on the phone said we don't have one but you can speak to the store manger so I did I explained to him the situation my fear of what happened, he asked for my name and number and he would talk to the girl review the tape and call me back. About 15-20 minutes later I received a call he basically said the same stuff but explained that if the dogs try to bite them they have to refer them to the vet. Honestly I think the situation was swept under the rug and something happened to my dog next time I'll be going to pet smart at least they tell you if they did something wrong. read more

Very unhappy with this petco. Had set an appointment for my fur baby for Vetco. Told me to wait in the car until called. Two hours passed, never got a call. I was super upset. Went in to confront them, they say it was out of their hands. I already paid for all my baby's shots she needed her second sets Bc she's under 15 pounds. Had to reschedule. Wasted my time. I don't know how my allegiance to petsmart came about, but it seems like I never give Petco a chance, so I thought i'd go in for a particular dog treat that i've not seen elsewhere. Unfortunately I didn't find it, kind of a let down, but I wont judge a store on one product. while here, I did go check for dog food, to save a trip and the prices were slightly more expensive. Ray the dog trainer is awesome and to say she knows what she's doing would be an understatement. My dog and I took the puppy class and it was fantastic experience. Rude and Dismissive "Supervisor" Joshua sold me a broken filtration and once I tried to exchange it for a working one he decided to implement the "no return" policy. Even though it was on the same day. Now, I understand with the situation at hand returns shouldn't be accepted due to cross contamination but in this particular situation the device was broken therefore it couldn't be put back on the shelf, which wouldn't interfere with COVID-19 guidelines. I know for a fact y'all are willing to do exchanges to other customers that have had moldy seeds sold to, but for some odd reason Joshua decided to make it seems like it was my fault for buying a defective device. " You took out of the store, there's nothing else I can do " those were his words, so basically is my fault for giving y'all business? Good to know, I will make sure to not make that mistake again. I make a special trip to Petco for dog treats because of the bulk selection they have over other stores. Their prices on most items are fairly close to Petsmart's and their p.a.l.s. card program offers some savings too. My biggest complaint is that the Lawrenceville location closed so I have to drive out of my way to either Duluth or Buford. I give more of my business to Petsmart since it's right down the street. If only they sold these teddy bear treats my dogs love. :-/ read more

Let me preface by saying that until today, I have always had a wonderful experience with Petco in the Duluth location. It has always been by go-to place to buy toys, food, and other necessities for my pets. I have given Petco a lot of business over the years. Today, I had one of the worse customer service experiences, not only at Petco, but at any retail location. My puppy, Skye, was due for her 2nd set of vaccines. I've heard great things about the VetCo vaccine clinic held most weekends at all locations. It's convenient and economical. And while this is true, the veterinarian (Dr. Hypolite) did not display the behavior or customer service expected during a visit to Petco. The first thing that Dr. Hypolite said to me when I brought Skye up to get her vaccines: "So you plan on abandoning you puppy?" There was no "Hello" or "How are you doing?" or any affection shown towards my puppy. Dr. Hypolite choose to greet me with the accusation that I will one day abandon my dog. At first, I was taken aback and clarified with what he said. And he told me "Well, based on the vaccines you have chosen, it looks like you plan on abandoning your dog." And of course told him that was not the case. I did tell him that I planned on placing Skye in doggie daycare on somedays or boarding her if I have extended travel planned. And his response was, "That's the same thing." At this point in the conversation, I was incredibly irate and actually upset that I was paying for a service and having these things said to me. Hindsight 20-20, I should have walked away and asked for a refund. But I politely but firmly asked Dr. Hypolite to give Skye the vaccines I paid for at this point. And he told me, "You don't pay me. I don't have to give these shots." Then I asked for a refund at which time he then decided to give the shots with no problem. For every Petco, there is a PetSmart where all employees care about their customers and their pets . For every Petco vaccine clinic, there is a vet's office that will show clients respect and kindness. I hope Petco will encourage Dr. Hypolite, like all of their employees, to establish good rapport with all Petco customers. This will be my last visit to any Petco location. read more

I've been coming to this Petco since it seems I am always in the Duluth area for some reason or another. I wish that there were more convenient locations, but I guess due to the recession a lot of their stores have closed. Bummer because lately I go to Petsmart just out of sheer convenience. This Petco seems very blah lately. When you come in, there are tons of areas that could use a bit of cleaning and sorting away. I am glad that they are on top of cleaning up after animals there though. The prices can be a hit or miss. I usually scan the barcode from my smart phone app to make sure that I am indeed getting a good deal and several times we have found the same item/size at other stores for cheaper. The selection here for things like leashes, collars, toys and aquarium decor is really limited. The service has always been helpful, but don't usually initiate asking customers if they need help with anything. read more

Dog Trainer Ray: We received dog training from Ray in her Adult 1 class and she is great to say the least. She is flexible with training times and if she needed to reschedule she gave us plenty of notice ahead of time. After about 3 weeks we could really see the difference within our dogs behavior. We are planning to take a second class with Ray soon. The store staff is great as well when ever I have had an issue someone actually listens to what I need and make helpful suggestions on how to rectify my issue. This is an update and again a 1 star rating, tried giving them a second chance and ... well I didn't want to go there but the person upfront was stand offish to me the first time and the second time I went in there as I waited in line to check out he was very talkative and polite and recommended certain products and such to the gentleman currently checking out.. who seemed to be Caucasian as the employee at the register was... after that customer left two very nice African American women were up next and as soon as they were up he's entire demeanor changed and was of no help to any of their questions and not polite or wished them a good day or anything and I (a Latino male) recieved that same treatment. I hope I read the entire situation wrong and I hope that man is not the person I think he is in our current time.. and not only that but my wife went in today.. she's Asian american and unfortunately again recieved no help or felt welcomed by the same individual.. sadly we will no longer shop at this petco read more

Do not go to this store. It is dirty. Twice I have gotten food items with worms / larvae in it. On a third visit I witnessed a long haired Syrian hamster who had such awful hair mats that he could hardly move. I found an associate and the woman acted like I was being unreasonable in expecting her to do something about the poor hamster. This was not the occasional matt that all long haired animals get. This was binding his legs and head. There is no telling how long he was like that. It should have been noticed in cage cleaning and feeding. I will not go back to this store. Other Petco's in the area are not like this one. I would drive to the one on State Bridge Road or Holcomb Bridge Road. read more

Worst customer service ever! Not just compared to other pet stores, I meant in general. This is not the 1st, 2nd or even 4th time that this has happened to me. The aquatics department sucks. Some employees are polite and some are not so polite like you are in their way or something. I can somewhat deal with that but to not get any service at all? In the past I have had to wait more than half an hour for even someone to show up in the department. Twice I got there with 30 to 45 minutes to spare before closing and went home empty handed because the staff that was there was busy doing maintenance duties? Tonight really was sooo disappointing because I was planning on buying fish to surprise my daughter with when she wakes up tomorrow morning for her birthday. I got there with 20 minutes to spare before 9PM. The staff that was there was again busy doing department maintenance. He saw without even acknowledging that I was there. Then he disappeared. The couple that was waiting there decided to leave and I was the only customer there. He reappeared and passed me and the Aquatics area without saying a word. 15 minutes later he finally reappeared at 9PM just to let me know that the store was closed. WTF. I got there way before closing time. If he wasnt planning on helping me at all, he should have just kicked me out first he saw me and just tell me he couldnt help anymore. That way I could have just went to Petsmart down the road instead. i wish I could give this place negative stars. read more

This was Prince and Phoenix first time getting groomed at this Petco. Ashley did a great job! The boys looked great when we picked them up. Phoenix has a hard time holding his bladder and had an accident and she gave him another bath; and that was amazing. They will definitely be going back to groom with her. read more

I have been taking my Shizus here for a grooming for five years straight never had a issue, but last Friday I took my little one there to get groomed at 11am. I call at 2pm asking if he was done the lady I spoke to in the department had an attitude and said he was now just getting washed (at 2pm but he was dropped off at 11a) and that they will call when he was done so I waited and waited all day so therefore I wouldn't have to leave my dog there for so long, he gets anxiety when he doesn't see his family for a long period of time and I did not want him to think we abandoned him. Five o'clock comes and at that point the grooming department went home and never gave me or anyone on my contact list a call. They left my dog in the backroom and went home. The groomer who was suppose to call name started with a T. I cannot believe a company that stands for loving and caring for animals would do such a thing! Will not be returning here read more

I don't recommend this Petco for fish, Its terrible I have only met 1 person in the fish department with good communication skills and manners. Note that I just started my saltwater fish tank in October of last year. 75 gallon tank my water was tested and its perfect. I spent about 2,000 dollars over saltwater fish at Petco. Which was a horrible idea all my fish were sick and of course there is a policy of saltwater fish that doesn't give you a refund at all . Me and my family are so upset. Plus it takes about 40 mins for you to get help in the fish department don't recommend it at all. read more

I am posting this review with concern for the cats in the care of this petco. The cages are extremely dirty, and when asked if anyone ever takes them out, was told, "sometimes ... when someone is thinking about adopting them... these two have been here for awhile though ..." I took photos and will post soon. I'm so sad that the kitties aren't a) getting attention or affection, b) are living in filthy cages, and c) that they never have the opportunity to roam in a play area and stretch their legs, as other petcos and petsmarts do. If I could give this place zero stars- I would. My poor mom had my sisters dog for Mother's Day. She went to Petco to make a return and brought Berkley (the dog) with her. There was one guy working the cashier who was obviously new which caused a long line. It was finally my moms turn and the guy was manually entering the numbers for what she was returning and a woman behind my mom said "your dog just pooped!" And my mom looked down and saw Berkley had diarrhea all on the floor. My mom started freaking out and asked where the cleaning stuff was. They told her in the back of the store. So as my mom is trying to hold Berkley (a hyper puppy) she is grabbing cleaning supplies. She gets back up front and starts to clean while not one, not two, but THREE employees WATCHED her clean up the mess frantically. No one offered to hold the puppy! The spray bottle didn't work, which they didn't really care about. There was not even a trash can for her to throw it away. So she walked down around the plaza until she found a trash can. We will NOT come back here and I would suggest to teach some common sense to the employees who watched her...but then again common sense ain't so common! read more

I have been to other pet stores in the area, Petco is my store of preference. Some of the prices are a bit higher than competitors but the sale items are always well below. The best part is, if I buy something to try and it doesn't work out - I can return it even if open. I recommend Petco over others. read more
