I am a huge animal lover and we currently own two dogs, both of whom were adopted. When I was recently running an errand at S Shore Plaza, I stopped into Pet Express -- the experience made me so sad and angry. First, I saw adorable puppies in cages, some of which were too small -- two larger puppies, in particular, one a Labradoodle and one a German Shepherd puppy. No matter what the size of dog, they all had water dispensers the size of those in a gerbil or hamster cage -- how they got enough water was beyond me, especially the larger dogs who had water dispensers the size of the small toy breeds. I watched a Shih Tzu puppy trying to repeatedly get water from the dispenser and it did not look like anything was coming out. I asked to play with the Labradoodle just to get him out of his cage for awhile. When he was put back in his cage, he fought to stay out and did not want to go back in...the staff member closed the door on him several times trying to get him back in. When I asked the staff member who assisted me how puppies were placed in homes, they informed me that if I could pay for the puppy, I could take him home that day -- no pre-screening to ensure that the home and family situation was a good match for the puppy. The entire experience made me so angry and frustrated -- in this day and age, how can anyone be so out of touch to be unaware that all of the Pet Express puppies come from puppy mills, the staff did not seem to care in the least about the puppies, I saw one puppy being "returned" by a couple who decided they didn't have time for the dog and I could hear quite a bit of barking from dogs behind the scenes who were not in the cages - I can't imagine what it must be like being cooped up in the small glass cages with little to no water, little room for exercise and nothing to do -- it's incredible that businesses like this have not been outlawed. read more

This place is horrible. As anyone can see, those poor YOUNG puppies in there are bored out of there minds, stuck in those tiny crates reeking of puppy pee. Do those dogs ever get out of their crates? Have they ever been out of the MALL for exersise? Doubt it. And as you venture farther into the store, things only get more horrible. The male and female small animals are all together. So if you pick up a bunny- she just might bring some friends! If you've ever bred anything before, you know well enough that a litter would never survive so short notice. Once I saw a litter of seven baby mice being attacked by the other five or six mice in the cage. So I go over to to the only employee I can find, some bored looking teenager behind the counter, and say, "Um, you know theres a litter of mice in there... right?" So he goes, "Uh, yeah." and doesn't do a THING!! God, people! You would think that the pet stores would have the sexes SEPARATED- but not doing anything about a litter of mice in a community cage? This is the most inhumane pet store I have ever been in. PLEASE, PLEASE PEOPLE- don't support this place unless you are doing a code-red rescue!!! We have GOT to run this place out of biusness! read more

Please dont assume every dog that is created is from a puppy mill. Did you know, in New England alone, there are no real requirments for breeding. So that means anyone can be considered a "reputable" breeder. Most puppy mill states are along the eastern coat or down south. Unfortunatly, other pet stores (some that are no longer in business) only cared for the quick buck instead of the general well being of the puppies. All of Pet Express puppys are loved and cared for to the highest potentional. If the dogs were all sick, then they wouldnt be for sale. Pet Express actually cares. and it shows through with their customer service and how they can talk about some of the dogs. Just because its another pet store, doesnt mean its the same as all the others ones. Also this... How many pet store sells dog...? Answer is, VERY FEW. Reason why, Others, they went out of business. Why do you think Pet Express is around...? Maybe its because they actually care for these dogs inturn, making a profit and continuning business. I am writing to complain about the Danvers Pet Express.. we were just kicked out of the Danvers Pet Express because the store manager heard us talking to a man about our dog rescue, Red Hot Rescue, and the benefits of adopting a rescue dog over buying a store dog.. We were approached and questioned by the man because of my vanity plate on my car and because he was admiring the official Service Dog of the Army veteran who adopted her from my rescue. The reason were removed from the store was because "promoting animal rescues in HER store will only hurt HER puppy sales" so were to told to leave and NOT COME BACK!!! no worries, I will happily NEVER return and I will make sure everyone I know or adopt to refrains from visiting ANY Pet Express in the future! I guess you prefer slinging puppy mill dogs rather than truly being their for people's animals and pets. How do you think people who own rescue dogs feel about that when they visit your store? In 2010, I purchased a sick black lab from here in Danvers for $1000. A few weeks later, our vet found out that he was born with a liver shunt. Which is a liver disorder that had been passed down from either his mother or father. Our black lab lived for 2 years until he died, in the end it had cost us about $30,000 in vet bills. I tried contacting the "breeders" which were on the paperwork given to us by Pet Express, but was unable to find an address or phone number. I also contacted the owners of Pet Express and I never received an answer, they could care less. Bottom line is that Pet Express is no different than any other pet store, despite the lies, the false paperwork, etc......they get their dogs from puppy mills in the midwest where dogs are in horrible condition and are forced to breed. Please google "puppy mills" and you will see where Pet Express puppies come from, please do not make the same mistake I did. read more

First of all, I joined Yelp strictly to review Pet Express based on the experience I had there. I had a totally different experience then everyone else. I know that a different pet store was here before so perhaps that is why others experiences were different. The staff was excellent The service was fast and friendly I regularly shop at pet express for all my pet supplies. I find their prices to fair and on point with other pet stores in the area. I recently purchased a dog and I am having a great time with him. Although training a puppy is hard, it always worth the results. I wanted to mention that I had no issues with the papers for the dog. I had read a review about people not being able to track the papers correctly. When I did my research I found a respected breeder and have had no health issues. Overall the experience was excellent and i would highly recommend. read more

I had an equally bad experience with this pet shop. The parakeets are overcrowded, they have no idea how to take care of reptiles and I encountered several green anoles who were so close to death, suffering from dehydration and mouth rot, that I didn't think they would survive the day. Their puppies are kept in deplorable conditions: tiny cages without beds to lay in and they have the dogs so overpriced that none of them ever find homes (so they are doomed to grow up in tiny, uncomfortable cages!). I could go on with rants on this website but it won't effect any change. All I can say is: PLEASE, IF YOU FIND (AS I DID) THAT THIS PET SHOP IS ABUSING ANIMALS, REPORT THEM TO THE MSPCA. This place is a sad excuse for a pet store. These puppy's are produced at puppy mills and sent of to pet express to flip and make money. It's like the Mafia, dog style. I had gotten a dog here a few years back with my mom and after 10 months of training, behavioral therapy, obedience classes and vet visits and help we had to surrender him to MSPCA who later told us this dog was not adoptable and a danger to anyone around him (he was also going to be VERY large). After they worked tirelessly with him they had to put him down because that was his safest option. We tried contacting the breeder info we were given by pet express and found out it was a spam number and Pet Express themselves would not return our calls. if I could give this ZERO STARS I would. After looking at the bad reviews, I think it's obvious that these people are PETA weirdos! I bought my puppy at the Lynn location, and couldn't be happier. My girlfriend loves him! I was in the area so I went into the Danvers location for some dog food and ended up getting a toy for him too. I had to wait for help for a few minutes because it was busy, but other than that it's a great store. My sister is looking for a pet bird I'm going to send her to Pet Express, no complaints from me. Extra hint, the Panera Bread is really good and close, but avoid the Target! Very unhelpful people at Target. read more

I wrote a review for the Lynn store and figured I would also update the danvers store as well. I have had nothing but excellent service at Pet express. After recently purchasing a puppy from the Lynn store I was able to retrieve all the correct papers for the dog and I am happy to report my dog butchy is doing well. My GF asked for a dog for hannukah and I will be checking out the Lynn store as soon as we can. I am excited to have another member join our family. I know our experience with the Lynn store will be just as good at the Danvers Location. Thanks to guys at Pet Express! read more

I recently purchased a puppy from Pet Express. I was hesitant to purchase from a pet store, and I wish I had stuck with my instincts. First of all, I looked up my puppy's "breeder", only to find that is was undoubtably a puppy mill. Expired medications, maggots in the food, etc! Then, I took my dog to the vet where he was diagnosed with kennel cough and ear mites! Honestly, while the puppies look appealing and cute, don't buy from this place. It's obvious to me that these poor babies are not getting the medical attention they deserve. read more

I am definitely a fan of Pet Express. I recently moved to this area and got an apartment of my own and thought it was the perfect time to get a dog to keep my company. I've been wanting a puppy for a while and the minute I walked in I fell in love with Maverick (my dog now!). The employees were friendly and gentle with the animals and I was able to pick out some awesome toys and treats for him there as well. I'm so happy to have my dog and I'm grateful for them for giving him to me! read more

I am so happy with my new puppy that I got from Pet Express. This is now my 2nd puppy from them and I cannot say enough great things. My puppy is happy and healthy. The experience went very well and the staff were excellent. Staff answered all of my questions and made the transition very easy. If you are looking for a puppy, I would highly recommend Pet Express. This place is just awful. It's your typical mall pet store made miserable by the horrendous staffing: A bunch of rude and disrespectful, loud mouth school girls. My wife and I went in on a dead Tuesday afternoon and were kicked out because we had no intention of buying a dog that day when we played with one.
