The puppy was very sick when we brought him home, we've spent over $1200 so far on vet bills. After learning more about this puppy mill operation it makes sense that he came home sick. Horrible review after review of puppies dying at early ages from genetic defects. My heart is absolutely broken to learn this about my newest family member. We purchased two Shiba Inus from this pet express back in 2014. My babies are everything to me, and I don't regret shopping instead of adopting. We first purchased Chief in September 2014 and the day we brought him home he wouldn't stop coughing, and he had diarrhea, among other things. We brought him to the vet and after $1,000 vet bill he was much better. November 2014 rolls around and we get an email from pet express highlighting the new dogs that are at the store and immediately notice another Shiba. We instantly had to go see if she was sick and if she was related to our first Shiba. Of course I noticed her coughing immediately and while we were playing with her we asked them to see her papers. Same fake "breeder" name and they also provide you with a family tree that our current dog was on, he was her uncle. How does an uncle and niece end up being two months apart????? Anyways we purchased her on the spot, picked her up the next AM and immediately took her to the vet. Same issues and same vet bill. One thing the dogs do come with is some type of warranty within the first 7 days or something that you can get your vet bills paid, I ended up getting reimbursed for most of the cost of their initial vet bills - but it took months. I don't support pet express and the horror show they put these puppies through. If you have a chance take a ride by the Lynn store to see all the grown puppies in cages that no one buys from the other stores. It's sad. I did however find the two loves of my life who have ended up being amazing. read more

Just awful. This is as any other mall pet store can probably be expected to be, though I have seen one mall store that wasn't so bad. The puppies are kept in their little kennels, which is expected, but they look pretty miserable. The staff is generally uneducated, and some are rude (there are a few exceptions of course), and they don't take proper care of their animals. Both male and female guinea pigs are housed together in one little hut WITHOUT ANY HAY. Guinea pigs need hay to survive, idiots. To make matters worse, when you want to pick up an animal to consider for adoption, whether a bunny or guinea pig, they preface it with "well if you get a female, we just need you to be aware that the males and females are housed together so you may get a pregnant female". That's responsible. Chances are the average soon-to-be guinea pig owner is a parent with a screaming whining 6 year old that wants a pet, and they will have no idea how to even feed the thing much less deal with a litter. Despite my dismay, I adopted a guinea pig here because when I picked the poor thing up he looked at me like "Please, PLEASE get me out of here." You can argue that I'm furthering the evil nature of stores like this, but I rescued that one little guy and he now has a big home with plenty of hay and fresh veggies. God knows where he would have ended up otherwise. Long story short, don't give these people your business unless you're on a rescue mission, or just don't allow yourself to consider adopting a pet that day. I'd hate to think of how many animals have gone to homes that don't know how to care for them because the people here don't prep you with information whatsoever. I'm under the impression that the puppies come from puppy mills as well, and are often the most disobedient or runts of the litter. Stay awayyyy. read more

My younger siblings desperately wanted to look at the puppies when we were in the mall. Based on my last experience (see previous review), I was not thrilled and though I vowed never to go back here, I told them we could take a quick look (I have a soft spot for my little brother and sister!). Unfortunately, the situation at this place has not improved. Still bratty, borderline rude teenage workers who ignore customers and respond to questions with attitude. If you approach a worker and ask to see a puppy, you will most likely be given some excuse as to why you cannot. Between my last visit and this one, I have overheard and been given many excuses including "you have to be 18," "you have to be 21," "you need to have a legal guardian with you," "you need to have a parent with you," "the NEW puppies can't be brought out to visit for play time because they are too tired," "visiting with any puppy is only for serious buyers, not for play time" and so on. Workers were more focused on talking to friends or avoiding customers than answering questions and being helpful. Saw one employee yank one dog out of the pen to let a few women visit with it. These poor animals looked exhausted, scruffy, matted, and miserable. It is well known in today's day and age that one should not buy a puppy from a pet store, as 90% of the dogs sold in pet stores are from illegal puppy mills. They will more than likely be diseased, inbred, and unhealthy. Do not waste your time or money, and do not give your support to this business -- please adopt from a shelter instead! read more

The girl with the long black hair and glasses who was working on Dec. 27 at 1:00 PM is super rude. She spouting off all the things the puppy package comes with and I mentioned it's similar to Petland's and she got all high and mighty saying they're not the same and that Pet Express is a family-owned business and they don't get their dogs from puppy mills. So is she accusing other stores of that? Why should I believe her over the people at other places? They all say the same thing. Also, she kept saying how it's a family-owned business, well hello, so is Petland. And, if this is family-owned, you're not doing a good job representing the familly well with your piss poor attitude. I asked to see one of the puppies and I was allowed to have about 5 minutes or less of time with her while she stood there staring on before she said she has to go back in. Poor dogs. Hardly any time allowed out and jerks for customer service people who don't know any better than to ramble off some list of things in a package that IS the equivalent to what other places like this offer. My husband and I purchased a beautiful Husky puppy from the Danvers location about six months ago. We had no idea the mess that we would get ourselves into! We love our dog, but unfortunately, when we first got her home she had pneumonia. Her nails were also so long that they seemed to be curling underneath her toes. We were shocked, because we were told that all of the puppies were being fully checked by a vet every week. Our vet suggested that maybe that isn't the case. She encouraged us to look up the breeder, and when we did, we were truly upset. Michelle Sonnenberg is her name, and she seems to be a rather neglectful kennel owner... We have yet to be reimbursed for the medical expenses, and the managers never seem to be around to talk. This family owned business always provides quality service and quality products for my pups. Like most people I had my doubts about the puppies here upon first experience. Anna was horrible. I was interested in a puppy I saw on their website. Due to covid you can't meet the dogs prior to buying so I requested additional pictures. After several email and phone requests I waited over a week to receive one picture that looked very different from the pic on their website. I was concerned with the health of the puppy's eyes. I expressed these concerns to Anna who told me his eyes looked different because he was in motion. This made no sense since the rest of him looked normal. Once again I requested additional pics. I didn't think this was an unreasonable request given the circumstances. She had a horrible attitude, told me it's not easy to keep a puppy still and that's the best she can do. Your job is to sell puppies Anna, figure it out. She also declined to do a video chat. How do you expect a customer to spend over $3000 on a puppy based on two pictures that look completely different from one another? She ended up pawning me off to another employee who never got back to me. Big surprise. They're either extremely lazy or they don't want their customers to see the truth. Later that day I noticed the puppy was taken off the website. They don't care about the health of their puppies, they don't care about accommodating their customers, they're only interested in making a quick buck. read more

This store is appalling. For years, every time I go to this mall, I walk by and look at the puppies. Within the past few years, I started working at a shelter and realized that pet store pups don't go outside... Ever... And they don't get to be around people unless they request to see that specific one. About 1.5 years ago, I decided to get a dog, but I wanted to get it from a reputable breeder (My mother is severely allergic, so I needed a hypo allergenic breed). While deciding on breeds, I decided to use the pet store to see a couple of the breeds. The first dog they brought out almost left me in tears; she was emaciated, petrified and silent. I couldn't leave her there. They asked for no proof of age (i was 19 at the time, but look like I'm 12) and I took her home. She was severely under weight, had kennel cough, ear mites and giardia. DO NOT BUY A PUPPY FROM PET EXPRESS IN DANVERS! My fiance and I bought a black lab from Pet Express in Danvers in the summer of 2010. He was acting very quiet there and a little goofy, but they said he is just being shy for a puppy and he doesn't have good enough balance yet. Later that week, we went to the Vet in Lynn that is "free" because they work with the store and said our lab was very healthy. LIARS LIARS! What a scam. A couple weeks later, our poor lab become very sick and lethargic. We then took him to a real vet and they found a liver shunt in his stomach. They said he would need surgery or he will die in a month. He was born with this liver shunt due to his mother having a liver shunt at the PUPPY MILL that Pet Express uses. The surgery would cost us 7500 dollars and we had to go to New York City to get it done. 7500 was only the surgery, with the meds and all the late night ER trips, Pet Express in Danvers has cost us upwards to 20,000 dollars in total. We did get the "warranty" from pet protection and got 1000 dollars back, GREAAAAAAT!!!!!! About 19,000 short. Thankfully thanks to our bank account, our lab is now doing good but PLEASE BOYCOTT THIS PLACE AND DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THERE, PLEASE PASS ALONG OUR STORY TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. P.S. My daughter works at the Danvers store and loves it! So we can assure you they take great care of the pups! They are very VERY sanitary and brush and clean the dogs daily. Before purchasing a dog from pet express, please read the warranty carefully, and decide whether you will be able to afford a dog that may not be healthy. I recently purchased a beagle from Pet Express. The following day (Sunday), the five month old dog had a seizure; in twelve days there were at least 4 more episodes witnessed. We brought the dog to his free vet visit at the animal hospital that was affiliated with the pet store (on Friday, 6 days after purchase). When we voiced out concerns to the vet, she said that he looked healthy, and brushed away our concerns. We called the manager of the store, voicing our concerns about seizures, and that we would like to return the dog. He said two things: (1) if we had had a vet write a letter stating the dog was having seizures, he would take the dog back, and (2) he would call us on the Tuesday after the holiday. We waited; he never called. Concerned, we took the dog to another vet, who confirmed the beagle was having seizures, and he would treat him for epilepsy after some blood work. The vet wrote a letter to the manager. We went back to the pet store on the 14th day of the warranty- the manager would not accept our letter, hassled us, and questioned our integrity. He would only take back the dog for a "non medical reason" called a "compatibility issue" under the warranty, and would take back the dog with a 35% restocking fee. I asked if he could possibly extend the warranty or work with us so that we could try the seizure medication with the dog, and see if he would get better-if so we would keep him. But he refused this suggestion. My heart was broken. I wanted the dog to receive the medical attention he needed, but I could not afford it financially and emotionally. My first dog, a Jack Russell, had passed away suddenly in May after 9 years. He was gradually paralyzed over the course of two days; I had to hold him upright so he could vomit. I could not go through caring for a sick dog again so soon- if I had known the beagle had epilepsy, I would have known that I would not have been able to handle it, and I would have never purchased the dog. I brought Henry back to the store. A sales girl took him from me and put him in the back room; he started howling and my heart broke again. In the end, I was required to sign a paper that stated the dog was returned for a "non health issue"; I was livid, angry that this manager could be so cruel. He said the dog would be given blood tests on Monday, and if there was noting wrong with him, he would be resold. EPILEPSY CANNOT BE DETECTED FROM BLOODTESTS. But he didn't seem to listen. I realize now that I made the wrong decision. I should have kept Henry. I will call the pet store affiliated vet on Monday to make them aware of the situation; if they administer the blood tests, they need to know that another vet is already confident that the dog has seizures and should be on medication. If Henry does not receive medication, he will only become worse. I hope that this post will help others making a decision to purchase a dog from pet express. I am sure that other dogs sold there are healthy, and several of the sales girls there were helpful and caring. But I have very little respect for the managers there; they twisted their words, and did not follow through with what they said. I know that seizures/epilepsy in dogs this young is hereditary and rare- so maybe ours was an exceptional case. However, I wish that pet express had acted with greater integrity. Some of the reasons we had purchased a dog there were the supposed strength of the warranties (these covered pet tore related illnesses and hereditary conditions) and the fact that the store was supported by the Boston Herald and CBS 4 news. Please consider all of the posts concerning this store before purchasing a pet here; find out about the complaints issued against the store through the Better Business Bureau; bring the dog for his/her first vet visit to a family vet not the vet affiliated with the store. Then with all this in mind, make the right decision for you and your family. I am not one of those people who equate pet stores with puppy mills- even the dogs in pet stores need homes; they cannot help being born, and so they too need homes. If anything, legislation needs to be taken against the breeders and brokers that breed multiple types of dogs for profit. I hope this will help even one person- if I had read something similar, I may have done things differently from the beginning. read more

My husband and I walked past this pet store, and an Italian Greyhound caught us off guard. Immediately, I wanted to adopt her. When my husband approached a poor tempered staff member, she ignored us. Finally, my husband was like "We'd like to see a puppy. How do we go about it?" The staff member started mopping one of the empty puppy rooms while telling us there are many people ahead of us and it takes at least 10 minutes for the rooms to sanitize. The store was busy, but there were no customers occupying a puppy room. We decided to leave for about 30 minutes and revisit the store. When we returned, I approached the same staff member, and I told her I was interested in the Italian Greyhound. She barked back by saying, " Are you here for playtime or serious about adopting?" I replied, "Very serious as I have an Iggy at home, and we're interested in meeting the puppy." I asked how long, and she said 10 minutes. There was 1 room being occupied, and the empty room being mopped earlier was still free. My husband and I waited 30 minutes while staff members played on their phones and continued to repeat the same lines to new customers...."It is a 10 minute wait and are you here for playtime?" The same staff member kept mopping the same EMPTY puppy room. My husband and I were disgusted by this POOR customer service and decided to leave. I truly hope this store finds nurturing, friendly staff to take care of those poor puppies. I will be sure to keep my friends FAR away from this place. Unacceptable! read more

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Pet Express Danvers. Everyone that works there is extremely patient, kind, and helpful. The crates are spotless - whenever I am there I see them cleaning one or another at any given time. Any time someone takes a dog out to play with in one of their pens they sanitize it immediately before anyone else goes into the same pen. We got our first dog there and love her so much. We are now in a search for a second dog, and they have been extremely patient as we just cannot decide what kind to get! They love their dogs, and anyone who says otherwise should visit the store before they knock it. They also feed their dogs the best type of all-natural dog food. I have already sent several of my friends there and those that bought puppies are thrilled. Anna is our favorite although everyone there is awesome! read more

Probably the worst place you can get a pet dog from. While I didn't believe the dogs came from a puppy mill, it's pretty evident that they do. They're very lethargic, malnourished, and unhygienic. Whoever is cleaning the puppies should ensure they are not matted down, and their butts are properly cleaned. I don't mind playing with dirty puppies, however feces can contract different diseases etc. The managers and employees are very disrespectful, inattentive, rude, and very selfish. Some puppies tend to have water bottles and some don't. Not sure if the people in the back know or they just don't care? Poop isn't properly cleaned from the kennels, the glass is always smudged so bacteria can always be transmitted, and puppies tend to be tossed into their kennels. Should I add that the people in the back can be loud, and when they are its usually about a puppy. The employees make it clear that they much rather spend their time on their phones and gossiping, rather than tending to people who would want to purchase an animal. Play time is not longer than 10 minutes or whenever the employee decides to take the pup. If you approach this store and consider purchasing a puppy, just turn the other way. Otherwise, you may just get attitude from their prissy little manager. read more

I haven't bought a dog but one of the young girls that work here told me about the new breed called an Alaskan Australian. She said it was a newly recognized breed. Then I found out from the other girl working there that the dog was an Australian Shepherd and a Alaskan dog. Giving them a star is being generous...I went into the store today and saw a sad looking pup. Decided to ask if I could spend some time to meet her, just so that I knew someone was giving her the love she deserves as a living creature. I spent a few minutes with the very excited pup and gave her belly rubs and got lots of kisses in return. But, when I had to leave and the associate came in, the dog cowered in the corner and started whimpering. WHY ARE THE DOGS AFRAID OF THE PEOPLE WHO WORK THERE?!?! Hiding in the corner is NOT a normal reaction for a puppy unless he/she is being mistreated. UNACCEPTABLE! I want to take all the animals home with me and have the place shut down. The customer service is awful! My dog (who we got from a shelter) recently passed away due to cancer, so we've been thinking of getting a new dog. While I was in the store with my little brother, we saw a dog that we were interested in. So before we called my parents over, we wanted to meet him and see how he would with people. So I went up to one of the workers and simply asked him if we could meet one of the puppies, he asked which one and then told us we needed an adult (I am an adult) so I told him my age and laughed it off because it was an honest mistake. He then asked how old my brother was so I told him my brothers age and he was unsure if we could meet the dog since my parents were not with my brother (which I totally understand) but that is when the female worker got involved. This girl (who was smacking on her gum and on her phone the whole time yelling out how she gets to leave in an hour) decided it's okay to yell at people who are interested on one of their dogs. The girl made a scene in front of about 20 people and was rolling her eyes the whole time. I wish I got her name so I could report her poor customer service but I guess if the managers really care, they could easily figure out who was working on 12-4-15 around 8pm. Long story short, do not go to the Danvers location unless you enjoy being talked down upon by high schoolers. In all honesty, I would recommend going to a no kill shelter (there's a great one in Salem) if you are looking for a pet. Adopting a pet is ALWAYS better than buying a pet. read more
