Hate to do this ... but…read more Awful service. Like, catastrophically bad. We were seated all nice enough (we had reservations). Drinks took ten minutes. Appetizers were on time. Then we sat ... and sat -- two hours for the entrees. During the wait, the untrained waiter asked for our desert orders. I mean, WTF! Food ok. Drinks ok. Nice menu. But the untrained and disengaged servers / kitchen / management... So shoddy. Do not come here.

You can definitely taste some Cantonese influences. Corazón: Very unique. The beef heart was grilled very tender, and the spicy and tangy dipping sauce was refreshing. I've also never had such large kernels of sticky corn before. Lomo Saltado: Similar to Cantonese black pepper and beef cubes stir-fry, but noticeably coarser. The meat was a bit tough and dry, the sauce didn't coat it well, and it wasn't very flavorful. Chaufa Mixto: Chaufa = chaofan 炒飯 (fried rice in Chinese) A very straightforward transliteration. Similar to Chinese fried rice, it had plenty of wok hei 鑊氣 (wok aroma), which is rare in the US. The beef and chicken were quite tender; however, the shrimp wasn't fully cooked, and you could clearly taste the raw texture inside. Vegetales Salteados: Seasoned exactly like Lomo Saltados, it's even stranger to use it for stir-frying vegetables... It was entirely for the vegetables' benefit; otherwise, it was completely unnecessary. Suspiro: Dulce de leche custard, meringue, and passion fruit glaze, sprinkled with cinnamon powder--it was far too sweet.

The Ceviche Carretillero was fresh and flavorful, but it was a bit too salty for my taste. That was the main reason I decided to give 4 stars instead of 5. The fried calamari was excellent--crispy, tender, and cooked perfectly. The picarones were outstanding and easily one of the highlights of the meal. The alfajor, beautifully shaped like the map of Peru, was the perfect ending to the meal and absolutely delicious. Overall, I enjoyed the food, desserts, and atmosphere, and I would definitely return. With a little less salt in the Ceviche Carretillero, this could have easily been a 5-star experience.

What made the situation even more concerning was that the beef did not seem fresh. In addition, while the empanada looked properly baked and golden on the outside, the dough inside was still undercooked. I also tried chicha morada for the first time, and I can already tell it's going to be a new obsession. I love corn, and I've never understood why the U.S. doesn't take better advantage of it in our cuisine, considering it's one of our biggest crops. It's definitely more of a casual vibe. But my Peruvian friend assured me that the prices are extremely reasonable for what we got, so I can't complain too much.
