Wish there were 6 stars because that's what PBHA deserves. My wife and I decided to invest (heavily) in a mini splits system for our house. The process was incredibly fast and professional! Jacob and his son arrived on time. Jacob (owner) knows his s##t. They listened to our requests and investigated inside / outside with game plan. They discussed cleared what was / was not possible. They delivered a quote on site - a huge savings in time. We continued getting other quotes most were higher by as much as 2x. Jacob followed up with us after a week and we awarded the job. They started within a few days with a staff who were true professionals (Juan and Anthony) knew the trade and quality was paramount. They kept us updated all the way. They were interrupted by a 6ft snow storm and when possible came back to finish. They kept us informed all the time. We were so so so impressed. They finished when the snowed subsided and made sure we completely understood how to work, maintain and what to do if the unlikely event of an issue to do. Weird company and owner to say the least, got his contacts through Mitsubishi website to install one ceiling cassette and heat pump at a second store master bedroom, Jacob came in, looked at the project for 3 min and said "This is something I don't want to take on, it's going to be a nightmare" this is his extend of customer service for a basic job. Just weird. Oh well. Response to Jacobs comments Jacob, you looked at project for 3 min before you told me it would be a nightmare and refuse even provide opinion as you just did on Yelp and explain why and have a conversation. The responses as followed: the ceiling cassette I told you I want to install parallel to the window, which is recommended location and if would blow air to the whole room, not even sure where you got this idea in will blow into wall and suck its own air. The heat pump I want to put next to the already installed HVAC condenser coil and it has plenty of room, recommended 4ft from each other, no snow there in this area so not sure where this idea came that it wouldn't heat, and heat pump doesn't work that way anyhow. The second unit connection to meet Mitsubishi recommendation for a min 2 units connection, I told you I am planning to build two more rooms there and second unit can be run to that area and placed there so later can be permanently moved in the new room. Again, you didn't even took time to look all, talk, to listen and to explain. read more

I have been using this business to service/repair my AC and Heating device. My AC failed 8/6/2025. Inspection found oil coolant failure. I signed up to purchase a replacement unit. The service team showed up as scheduled. Got to work efficiently. Day 2 returned as agreed, completed the installation. Team is very customer based. I now have a system that offers separate zone ac/ heat control. Recommend that if your system is 25 years old, don't wait for a major failure. No AC during the front end of August heat wave was no fun. read more

I recently purchased an older house that had a very old central ac unit that was very inconveniently inconsistent especially during this heat wave. I called one company for help who left me on hold for 30+ minutes. Other companies say it's old and try to sell me anew unit. Performance said they'll send someone right away. Then magically my ac worked 10 minutes before Jacob arrived. He charged me a modest fee, gave me some trouble shooting tips and maintenance advice. The ac soon stopped working again that very night. I called back and they sent Jacob back free of charge. You can tell he's very knowledgeable and I'm glad I had him working on my ac. He threw everything at it and after about 1-2 hrs he gave up and said he couldn't figure it out. Refuse to charge me. When he was packing up I tried to turn the ac on and it worked! Even Jacob was surprised. Ever since the ac has been working perfectly. I definitely recommend this company and definitely appreciate the professionalism, honesty and punctuality. Update June 16, 2021: In a total mafia move, the owner sent me a text saying, in part, that he would blackball us with all local contractors to get back at an honest Yelp review. From the owner's text, "If you don't know you'll figure out at some point. This is a very small community, most contractors know each other. I know someone from every HVAC company up here. Probably 10 electricians, plumbers, General contractors, etc. We all run into each other all the time. I could easily contact people and advise them about you. That would be a dick move...." Update June 14, 2021: Jacob Klein, the owner, actually made a YouTube video on his personal YouTube site violating our privacy and making up something about a contractor lawsuit that does not even exist. He also filmed a YouTube video in our house without our consent for commercial purposes. Do not let this guy in your house. Original post: We had these guys install a large 5-ton mini-split heat pump system in 2020. When I asked them to install a small 0.75-ton mini split in an outbuilding recently, the owner gave me a quote. And then he chastised me for wanting a building permit and said it was $750 for a building permit, which is far beyond market rate for a small system like this. After scheduling the job, he stalked me on Yelp and said he didn't want to do the job in the end because I hadn't given everyone a five-star review. The owner said I should try the following other places, instead of his shop to service the system *they* installed: Angels SheetMetal Aire Serv Gatewood Central Heating and Air Comphel Foust The owner also doesn't keep his politics to himself, which is annoying and bad for business. After my many years on this planet, I have NEVER had the experience of what I was subjected to by this company. They are not only rude, condescending, with a customer service that is abysmal...BUT their expertise is extremely questionable. Long story short, the system they installed never worked correctly and when I called them back, they simply refused to respond to any phone calls. That's right...they seemingly decided NOT to respond. Being new to the area, I was horrified by their lack of professionalism, but when this system finally broke down a few months later, I thought they should be the ones to fix their own errors. When they finally responded to my calls (months later), they came to see the issues and didn't know what the problem was. I was told they would have to keep coming back and try all sorts of different ways to 'fix' the issue until they figured it out. (WHAT?) I then called another company who immediately knew the problem and solved it immediately. Simple and far cheaper than PERFORMANCE BASED would have ever done! The final decision to hire this company is up to you, but I must say that you should stop for a minute...and think BEFORE ever hiring them. read more

Imagine the crisis. Our family showed up at our vacation home a few days before the Christmas holidays ready to host friends and family. Walking into the freezing home with a fresh Christmas tree and boxes of wrapped gifts, we learned quickly that something was terribly wrong: no heat. After trying all the usual suspects (replacing batteries in the thermostat, checking the fuse box, etc.), the heat pump remained cold and inactive. Christmas appeared to be ruined. Scouring the yellow pages in hopes of finding an HVAC technician on a Friday afternoon, we stumbled upon Jacob Klein of Performance Based Heating & Air. Jacob made an appointment to drive to Groveland on a Saturday morning so we pulled out the space heaters and blankets and simply settled in for a cold night. On Saturday morning, Jacob showed up and immediately went to work determined to find a way to get us some heat. Unfortunately, after exhausting multiple tricks to figure out the cause of the problem, he learned that the aged compressor had finally run its course and we would need to replace the entire heat pump. Once again, Christmas seemed to be in ruins as there was no way we could host a family get-together in the December cold. Yet, unbeknownst to us, Jacob learned that we had emergency heat strips that could offer some heat. I can't tell you how thrilled we were to feel heat emanating from the ducts in our bitterly cold home! Throughout his repair visit, Jacob explained every test of the system and never lost hope that he could somehow find a way to get us some heat to survive the Christmas holiday. Sadly, we will have to fork out the cost of a new heat pump - an unexpected bill awaiting us in the new year. However, we were able to enjoy our holidays and that's all thanks to Jacob. We will most definitely be asking Performance Based Heating & Air to give us an estimate for the new heat pump and can't say enough nice things about the service provided by Jacob and his wife, Rebecca. read more

With all this chill in the air it was actually a decent time to get AC (summer will come). Wanted to share a great experience with Performance-Based Heating and Air. From the start they were on the ball, great text communication about when they were coming, even sent their current location tracking as they came up the hill from Jamestown. Jacob was able to discuss numerous options and quote on the spot for various configurations, using a professional online system. The quotes were more reasonable than we expected, we ended up getting 3 mini-splits: in 2 bedrooms and the great room. The big one is remotely controllable over Wi-Fi and app. The install happened a week later, was all done in one day, the guys were great, explained everything and cleaned up well. I've been in touch twice with questions via email, and both times I got follow up within the hour, once with a phone call. Very helpful. Let me tell you the units are not beautiful but they really work well! I've been able to try them in both Heat and Cool mode, and both ways they are super powerful and really work impressively. read more

Needed a bid for replacing an almost 40 year old heat pump. I wanted to know what the running amperage was for the unit this company proposed so I could compare it to what I currently have and decide whether it is worth changing it out or not. I asked for this information up front but it was not provided with the bid. I called Trane, the mfg. of the unit they proposed to install, and Trane would not tell me either. I emailed Performance back again, asking for this information and indicating that the other HVAC company that provided me a bid did not have any problem giving me this information. I got an email back saying: "16.7 but I'm gonna pass on the work. Have the other company install it. " What is up with this? You provide me a proposal then tell me you do not want to do the work? Why bother me with your proposal in the first place? I will not be doing business with this company, I am afraid. They are very unprofessional. read more

We have used them a couple times, and then today came to our Cabin in Mi-Wuk, where it was 21 degrees outside and found our heater was not "firing up". Checked things out with no luck. Called and LM. Within 10 minutes had a call back from Jacob who explained the issue could be a frozen exit line (for water) and that I could easily remedy by cutting the PVC.. Treked outside, did so and BAM - IT WORKED. So, as we had them install an AC/Heater in one section of cabin, fix an issue with other heater - I highly recommend them. I have been having heater problems since October 2020. It is now February. The HVAC company my home warranty people sent out could not fix my problem. The other company came out 3 different times and could not figure out what was wrong. I saw Jacob (the owner) was recommended on NextDoor. He came out and fixed the problem in 15 minutes. I have a 25 year old unit so the other company just told me to replace it. Again, I am telling you, Jacob found the problem and fixed it in 15 minutes, then went on to look in the top panel and found a secondary issue and fixed that too. He knows his stuff. Called this company a few years back due to A/C not blowing cold. The owner came out and almost right away was criticizing the unit I had (oh those units are cheap, not good quality) then talking himself up about how great he was. At the time to access the unit you had to walk around the house, which the owner did the first time he looked at it, but when returning after going back to his van, he cut through our landscaping trampling through our photinia and rosemary, all so he wouldn't have to spend another minute walking around the house. He then proceeded to diagnose what the issue was, which ended up being the "cap" as he said or capacitor. He immediately said it'll be $280 to replace it and asked if I would like to proceed. I had no idea what this part usually goes for or how much labor was involved in installing it, so assuming he was honest I reluctantly agreed mostly bc he was already there and having small children in the house without a working A/C in 95° heat, I felt like I had no other choice. He installed the part, I paid him, the A/C was blowing cold again and all was well. However when looking up the part I found out it was only $20-30 and that installing it shouldn't cost anywhere near $250, but not wanting to deal with it I let it go, deciding just to never call this company again. Fast forward to the next day, the A/C wasn't working at all! I called this company again and the owner said "Im actually on my way home and can stop by in a few minutes no problem" perfect I thought, he doesn't have to go out of his way and is already nearby. So 10-15 minutes later he shows up and within 5 minutes tightens up a couple screws in the exact area he had been working the day prior, so I was thinking he made a simple mistake, glad he was able to quickly correct it. Then he goes "Thats be $90 for the service call" I couldn't believe it! Not only did I just pay $280 the day prior, now he's trying to get another $90 out of me for an issue it appears he caused. Im a very patient nice person, but at this point I had enough of his antics and finally put my foot down. I told him I wasn't paying for $90 for a service call bc that wasn't what this is. Again being the nice person I am, I said "I'll pay you half of that, $45 for your time" to which he agreed. My wife, very reluctantly and upset, wrote him a check and the last thing he said to us was "don't ever call me again." All we could do is shake our heads in disbelief and agree that wouldn't be an issue bc we would def never call him again. read more
