I had about 5 minutes of time to kill before having lunch nearby, looked through Pepper Palace's windows, and was intrigued to see a store with so many types of hot sauces and rubs. I decided to head in. There were so many types of bottled hot sauces (like shelves and shelves of bottles!). I asked an employee if I could try the sauces, and he told me that there are sample bottles for every type of sauce that they sell, and cups of small sample spoons near each set of sample bottles. I only got to try two different sauces because I was looking specifically for medium heat, and I wasn't interested in trying sauces with fruit in them. I tried the Flavor of New Orleans BBQ Sauce (medium heat). It had a nice peppery (duh) flavor, that was just barely hot (to me). I tried another medium heat level sauce, but I wasn't interested enough in it to buy. Next time I'm in the area, I'd like to sample more sauces. If you like to spice up your foods, I suggest checking Pepper Palace out for their sauces and rubs. read more

I was so excited to come upon this shop in the market! Most of the time if you want specialty hot or wing sauces you have to order it online and it cost an arm and a leg for shipping. No shipping cost here! You will spend a couple extra bucks bc they've got your college Alma maters logo on the bottle, or a pic of cheech and chong, but it's worth it! I've stopped in a half a dozen times, and always bought something. Last visit I got some awesome garlic parm wing sauce that is great to use on wings, but also in stuff like your favorite buffalo chicken dip or pasta. Pepper Palace touts itself has having every pepper or pepper sauce one would want. So, stopped by assuming I might find piri-piri (also spelled, especially by Spatch as "peri-peri") and also some piquillo or sweet drop Peruvian, but no luck. No only didn't they have it but no one here had even heard of it. Apparently they never been to one of the Spatch Restaurant chains of have ever looked in the varying peppers of Peru, which pretty much being the motherland of peppers, one might think they would have done. However I'm going to downgrade them for these oversights. Overall this Pepper Palace, which is a part of a rapidly growing chain that started off as a kiosk in Wisconsin, is a great place for hot sauces of all kinds and sorts. OMG!!!!! Small shop at the end of the city market. They let you try anything on a chip! (No double dipping please). We tried about 20 sauces, BBQs and salsas. We discovered this place while walking on the King street and decided to go in. We were surprised and overwhelmed to see so many choices for hot sauce! You can try any hot sauce with the tortilla chips provided and we were in hot sauce heaven. Apart from the hot sauce, they also carry lot of other things - salsas, bbq sauce, drink mixers etc. We ended up getting 3 hot sauces (2 for ourselves and 1 for a gift) and 1 blood mary mix. I chickened out at the time of purchase and ended up getting medium hot sauces, which later didn't feel as hot. The bloody mary mix was okay and won't be buying it again. So many interesting hot sauces here. We wandered in here on a whim because we've been following the Youtube series "Hot Ones" with Sean Evans where he interviews celebrities with chicken wings and hot sauces. We were curious to see if Pepper Palace would sell any of the sauces featured on the show. The setup of the store allows you to sample some tortilla chips with various sauces already poured into squeeze bottles for easy access and control. You do have to be 18 or older to sample and some sauces require a signature to try because they're essentially extracts from ghost peppers. They have a " buy 5, get the 6th item free" deal and we walked out buy more than we intended including some seedlings for some datil and ghost peppers. The salesperson in the store was extremely knowledgeable and was able to give us some suggestions on what to try. They weren't pushy at all on selling us stuff because their products, including some sauces/salsas they make themselves, speak for themselves. Holy hot sauce, Batman! It's safe to say that I have never been to a hot sauce emporium before I stepped through the doors of Pepper Palace so I probably don't have much of a baseline for comparison. However, I do know that the experience I had here could not be beat! If you are a fan of hot sauce, salsa, or BBQ sauce, then this my friend is the store for you! The walls are bursting with all the heat packing goodies you could imagine. Plus there are free samples of nearly everything! The first time I visited here I was looking for a gift for a hot sauce and salsa aficionado friend of mine. The gentleman working there (who I believe is one of the owners) was super friendly and helpful as he answered any questions that we had, gave recommendations, and encouraged us to sample freely and liberally. Needless to say, I left with just as many "gifts" for myself as I did for her. The shop is very conveniently located on Market Street right outside downtown's City Market. However, this convenience probably also allows the owners to increase the price of their items to a degree given the large influx of tourists they must bring in (I'm assuming). This truly is a palace for us hot sauce lovers. They have every kind of sample lined up in the store with tortilla chips. There was so many sauces you could have imagined, this was my kid in the candy shop experience for sure! They have a Wall Of Flame they do, which I wont participate EVER again haha but.. They give you a Ghost Pepper sauce on a chip and I think a habanero sauce and right after, then they make you hold this Horseradish in your mouth and that is what sets it off! I was crying my eyes out afterwards and then they take a picture of you. I LOVE hot sauce, eat it with everything, but after that it literally took about 30 minutes to get that hot out of our mouth, we had to keep stopping for more water or something to cool the burn. The simple fact that they make you sign a waiver to try out a hot sauce called "flashbang" is enough. For me, I was sold that they allow samples of practically every product. I probably would not have bought anything if it wasn't for that. Let's be candid, these kitsch shops for tourists are all over the place, but this one's not half bad. If you love sauces, relishes, BBQ to hot sauces then this might just be your place. They rate the sauces levels 1 through 10 to 10+ and have exotic to joke bottles to your classic Tabasco. I'm a fan of mustard, and I tried a citrus Dijon mustard that was divine for as far as mustard goes if you like em sweet. I only sampled a few... some in my range, some a little daring. Be aware that you might burn yourself. I ended up with a few tiny ulcers. Haha. Nothing bothersome, however. They also have signs up that say 18 plus, but I'm unsure how hard they enforce that. Happened to walk past this place during my hunt for some Charleston souvenirs in City Market. I'm thrilled that my curiosity got the best of me. My wife and I must have tasted close to 40 different hot sauces, from sweet to tangy, to downright unbearable (beware of their house brand ghost chili hot sauces!) I found the right balance of sweet, salty and spicy in the "Mountain Q Honey Habanero BBQ Sauce", which has a spiciness rating of 8 on their 1-10 scale. I am completely in love with that sauce! Along with that, we took home a bottle of the "Southern Peach & Vidalia Onion Hot Sauce" and the "Slap Ya Mama Cajun Seasoning". I must say, home cooking hasn't been the same since. Pepper Palace is AWESOME! But, this 6th trip there, was disappointing. We showed up at 7:15 and they close at 7:30. The hourly employee was more concerned about closing shop that taking care of customers. He actually asked us to not make a mess when opening the few samples still out. We tried a few items, bought what we needed and left. The shame is that I've been to 4 other Pepper Palace locations and live to buy new stuff. I guess this location has lowered their standards for tourists during peak hours. read more

I have been to places that have impressive collections of hot sauce. None of them let you taste before you buy. And they have all the sauces rated by heat from 1 to 10 so that you don't accidentally hurt yourself. I don't think they have EVERY hot sauce in the world. I love that you get to sample everything before you decide on purchasing. I bought the house made Bloody Mary mix, Nasal Napalm Horseradish and Chipotle Mustard and I can't wait to use them at home. Bring your taste for all things spicey and a tissue. You will find things from mildly boring to blow your socks off hot, and everything in between. They have some interesting sauces, pepper jelly, bbq rubs, and anything else you can spice up. We tasted our way through the store, and ultimatley left with spicey pineapple pickles, which are really good, hot habenero salsas, other hotter than hell sauces, and couple of bbq rubs.
