I can only vouch for the cheesesteak but this has to be the best cheesesteak in chester county - great for us suburbians. I've ordered here several times with work and even with the travel time the food is still very warm and it travels well so don't be afraid to stop in for take out. I have been there to eat in and take out more than a few times. The food is hit or miss, depends on who is doing the cooking and prep. Yesterday ordered 3 hoagies for take out, no oil or spices, very little meat or cheese, is was very bland. I wish the person providing the training for the employees there would be consistent with the food prep. Also, in the past ordered a cheese stake with extra cheese, when the sandwich arrived couldn't see the cheese had to send it back. I think the Pepper Mill could use some competition. read more

Really go here for nostalgia anymore. This place has been around for as long as I can remember. They make good cheesesteaks, milk shakes, and crinkle cut fries; everything else on the menu is hit or miss but you'll never go wrong with this. It's gotten pretty expensive over the years but unless you're willing to travel a bit, this is your best option for a cheesesteak in the area. The pizzas are great (if they still have the four-cheese pizza, it's amazing) and the chicken cheese steaks never disappoint (except for the one time they forgot to add cheese to mine...but I'm willing to overlook ONE mistake out of many, many successes). I agree with some of the reviews here. Peppermill used to be my favorite spot to get cheesesteaks (regular, chicken, and buffalo chicken). However, recently, their portions have become much smaller than in the past and the quality is just not the same. I still go here occasionally because the food is decent and it has a nostalgic environment. read more

The best meat, fresh produce, and great rolls. They also have great pizza, cheesesteaks and meatball subs. Again you won't find a much better hoagie than at Pepper Mill anywhere. I have been ordering from peppermill for years and am really disappointed in the last 4 times I have ordered a chicken finger platter I have not been given the honey mustard with the order which is supposed to come with it. I even ordered extra in hopes to get just one. I know its a small issue but 4 times messing it up is crazy! I have ordered during the week and weekends so business isn't an excuse and I spoke to a manager each time afterwards in hopes that it would be corrected. They used to be a staple in the community but if they can't get a simple order right 4 times their quality is obviously slipping. read more

Moved to West Chester thirty years ago. Can't even imagine the money I've spent there over the years. Back in the day Pepper Mill had by far the best cheesesteaks around. Always has been a little on the pricey side but it used to be worth it. Now the food is still more expense than local competitors but it's wildly inconsistent. The employees used to be great, now they're, on a good day pleasant, but not that competent. They have done very little in remodeling or upgrades over the decades. Really tired anymore. On top of that the cash only policy begs the question of tax evasion while annoying customers. After another screwed up order, I'm done with them. read more

This place is a West Chester institution. I grew up about two miles from here and always loved getting their cheesesteak stromboli (SOOOOOO GOOD!). Whenever I'm home from school, I ask my mom to have a Pepper Mill pizza waiting for me. Whenever I have friends visiting, I always take them here to get pizza or cheesesteaks. Probably the best place outside of the city for a good cheesesteak. The bread is just perfect, soft, but still firm enough to not fall apart under the delicious grease of the steak. The meet is so flavorful (especially with grilled onions and mushrooms!). And you are not going to find a slice of cheese put on top of the meat, they cook the cheese with the steak, letting it melt and permeate every single bite. I am so disappointed with this place ... pizza is ok, as there are not a lot of good options in West Chester in the first place BUT last two times we've ordered delivery with them, it's taken much longer than they said it was. For example tonight, they said 45 mins and in reality, 1 hour and 20 mins. Very hungry, very disappointed kids here, and our play date guest may have to go home with an empty stomach!! read more

Plus, they only accept cash. They need to get with the times and get a credit card machine and I feel they will increase profit greatly. Not the Peppermill I used to remember. The Buffalo chicken cheesesteaks were fabulous, but the hamburger was extremely bland with no flavor at all. Service was OK but overall pretty slow. Fries were the big hit. A bit overpriced also. read more

I really want to love this place. Unfortunately, they seem to have very challenged people taking orders. My Mom orders there all the time and has for years...so I can honestly say that 3/5 times that she will order her Turkey Club, she will be asked something like 1) What kind of meat do you want on your sandwich? Or 2) I'm not sure that we can do toast. (In the background: She wants it toasted. Can we do toast?) I promise...these are literal examples that are too much to make up. You don't have to be rocket surgeons...but this is your business...and it's toast. Overall, decent food (even if they can't seem to consistently deliver toast) and nice people...but I will try to find a replacement neighborhood pizza joint for my Mom...hopefully one that has mastered the culinary challenge that is toast. read more

Like some of the other recent reviews, the Pepper Mill has slipped from being a great place to grab a cheesesteak to a restaurant that I'll be avoiding in the future. I've had problems on three different occasions in the past year with the accuracy of pick-up orders (you ask for "no onions", and when you get the order home, you expect it to have no onions). Mistakes can happen to the best of us, and in the past, they've offered to make it good. Tonight, however, when I asked the cashier for my money back, she went to the back and spoke to whoever was in charge (Sunday night, not sure any management was in the building), who quizzed her for a couple of minutes about the order, and eventually he came around to the register to ask me what happened. I told him about the wrong order, and that I wanted a refund. He rolled his eyes, asked me for the receipt (I found the order slip that was attached to the grinder), and he rang up the refund. He handed me the money without looking at me, and just said sarcastically "Have a nice night." He asked me if the bag I brought in was the grinder, I said yes, and he turned and heaved it into a trash can six feet away, and turned away without further comment. He gave the impression that I was inconveniencing him, not vice versa, even though I had to make an extra trip to resolve the problem. He never offered an apology, or any recognition that I was put out in any way by their mistake. I guess the only good news, from his perspective, is that I'll never inconvenience them again, since I won't be going back. I wonder if I would have gotten the same treatment if one of the owners was in the restaurant on a Sunday night to see what happened. I think the earlier comment that the place is being run by high school and college students must be true, at least on weekends. read more

Have a look at the years worth of grime on the doors as you leave, and take a look at the restrooms - if this is what they tolerate in those places, it makes you worry what the kitchen cleanliness standards are. I just got off the phone with Peppermill and have decided that will be my last interaction with them. I have been going to Peppermill for the better part of 15 years and this was the worst experience I have had. I had been thinking about my cheesesteak all night. I don't have them very often, so when I do, it is a big treat. I drove out of my way on a stormy Friday night during rush hour to feed my fix. I ordered the Grid Iron with onions and mushrooms and unbeknownst to me, marinara. After finally arriving home, changing into my pjs, putting in a movie, and sitting down to eat my big, old cheesesteak, I discover it is slathered in marinara. Ugh. Gross. I tried to eat it; the Peppermill is not close to my house but it was awful, I couldn't choke it down. I was craving that steak so bad...the disappointment was heavy. I decided to call and ask if I could drive all the way back and exchange it for one without sauce, (I never, ever saw any sauce written on the menu, I swear). The girl that answered the phone was a complete inexperienced and a rude excuse for customer service that ever existed. I could almost hear her eyes roll to the back of her empty and entitled head. She told me that it wasn't up to her and that I should have ordered the right steak. I asked her incredulously if that was really how the Peppermill chose to handle their customer service and she asked if she was supposed to replace everyone's orders that were complained about. Really???? After over 30 years in the hospitality industry, I assured her that yes, that is exactly what she was supposed to do and that I won't be coming back. I'll drive the extra 10 miles to get great service AND great steaks at Lorenzo's in West Chester. Fuck off Peppermill. Hire some kids without attitudes and entitlements...and it wouldn't hurt for you to clean up that dump either. read more

We have been able to try a couple things on the menu but consistency with food is a problem. Things have been good but not necessarily skyrockets in flight good. One big drawback is cash only, which they advertise or tell you about until you're ready to pay the bill. I understand that this is just how they roll and always have but they are not necessarily any cheaper than other places and probably even a little more expensive than competitors. $9.00 for pepper and eggs sub? Only stating bc relative To the same price as having a steak sandwich. I mean how expensive are eggs really? The building is apparently the same as it's always been so they're not putting that extra money (from not taking credit cards) into capital. Doorways haven't been washed in years, bathrooms are most likely in violation of health code and the place has a unique odor but the Bottom line is that the place has been around forever so they obviously have something good going on. read more

I only have one complaint about the food, which generally pretty good. Located within miles of the mushroom capital of the world, they still use rubbery, canned mushrooms. There's no comparison to the real thing. My main complaint is about the cleanliness of the restaurant. It needs a good scrubbing... floor to ceiling, wall to wall - the carpet (in a restaurant?), salt and paper shakers, backs of seats, walls, ceiling tiles (look mildewed), window sills, menus, etc. Thankfully, the staff is always friendly. read more

I ordered Pepper Mill to be delivered - and sadly it will be my last. I forgot lunch and couldn't leave work since I was the only person on duty. Had to make the $10 minimum for delivery so I ordered a cheese steak and some mozzarella sticks. My total was outrageous for just these two things, and came to over $17.00. The mozzarella sticks were burnt and half of them didn't even have cheese in them! Before I could even finish my meal - I got sick. Not only was my issue with the food and and the illness I got from it but... they took an HOUR AND A HALF to deliver no more than 2 miles down the road. They never indicated they were running behind or it would be that long of a wait. It was also a late Sunday afternoon - not the weekday lunch rush. Terrible. read more

Outside of Tony Lukes outposts, this is the best cheesesteak you can find in the suburbs. In fact, the best buffalo chicken cheesesteak I have ever had. Everything here is done right - the steak is juicy and slathered in cheese, the rolls are perfect, and the portions are large. It's hard to pinpoint how one spot can have a cheesesteak so much better than others, but Pepper Mill delivers. Just be advised, cash only. read more

Terrible customer service! The manager is sooo rude! My delivery order took over 1 hour and twenty minutes and they forgot half of my order. The food that they did bring was ICE COLD! I called to speak to the manager and he basically told me "too bad, we are busy". I will NEVER go back there! read more
