I come to Pep Boys typically once a year, the Patchogue location is one mechanic/service shop that i trust. Each time is a good experience. On this particular occasion I was able to easily set up an appointment for a vehicle inspection on their website. I arrived a half hour early and was seen relatively quickly (might have been a fluke, someone came in late for their appointment). But either way I was in and out in a jiffy. *Passed with my 2023 Chevy*. Upon entry I was greeted by the desk clerk and informed about what steps they would take and approximate bill ($10). I was also shocked to see their newly renovated client waiting area, really nice. My appointment was at 11:30 by the time I left the waiting area started filling out. If I could leave negative stars I would My vehicle is a fleet vehicle I made my appt for 1 pm initially yesterday- my early afternoon appt cancelled so I change my appt and was able to bring it in at 11 Great Needed an oil change and inspection (I knew based on prior pep boys along with the inspection I was probably going to need brakes - last year was tires - year before brakes - etc) Oddly I got a text at 12:05 pm and my inspection report was there - but no tech assigned Wow - i can see passed - no light on... and I didn't see brakes - WOW- I did see a picture of the brakes though At 4 I called and they said it would be ready around 7 I got a call at 5:14 that it was ready and I went to retrieve my vehicle When i got there - the bill was $1700 I was shocked because all it went in for was oil change and an inspection and no one mentioned a word on anything else - I go to pull out of the parking lot - the car was bucking and the engine light was flashing - I called and drove it right back- they drove it into the back and came out a half hour later and said it was a loose bolt ? I went to leave again and didn't even get passed the front of the store and the issue is still happening . They brought it back into the back- after about an hour the front desk kid- I asked him what was going on- he said well we put in bad spark plugs ? What why are you changing spark plugs for an oil change - he said I don't know- he said you asked for an engine diagnosis and the engine light was on- I said no - there was no lights on at all- until after I went to pick it up. They said it would take a few minutes to get good spark plugs -they didn't have them in the store and had to order them from a different store ps it was not finished yesterday In the meantime I called my fleet company who told me that they were told I said that the car was misfiring and the engine light was on- which is a blatant lie- first of all how the heck would I know they car was misfiring ? And honestly it's a fleet car- the car is well maintained and taken care of by my company . Plus - I was back at my house at 11:14 pm(based on the uber logs) and according to the report from the communication thread attached with my receipt I complained about the problems or it was sent for approval at 1- which is an hour after I received the text with the diagnosis that no lights were on and I believe they were looking at brakes but it passed inspection ... I don't know what kind of scam you ( or your employees) are running over there - but my company and the fleet company are aware of the situation - of performing services that were not remotely necessary - fabricating 'driver complaints' .I did not ask for any other services other than oil change and inspection. I didn't even get a new message that my car was brought back in last night - because they totally screwed up a car that had no issues other than needing an oil change and inspection . I picked it up today and was told it was a clogged air filter ?!! What? I said what happened with the bad spark plugs from last night- the kid at the desk said idk he just heard it was a clogged air filter - and it was extensively test driven this morning (there's no miles other than the 1 I put on trying to drive out of the lot twice ). Went to Pep Boys for a SIMPLE tire plug because I had a slow leak from a small hole. That's it. I dropped the car off, went to grab food, and came back over an hour later just to be told all four tires were "dry rotted" and I needed a whole new set of tires instead of the simple plug I originally came in for. Meanwhile, they somehow made the hole BIGGER than it originally was and didn't even bother putting air back in the tire until I asked because I still needed to drive home. The second I left, you could literally hear the air leaking out louder than before, and the tire started making horrible noises while driving. And when I came back after waiting all that time, the guy goes, "Yeah, I was just about to call you." Sure you were. The funniest part? I got home, my dad plugged the tire himself in minutes, and now everything is perfectly fine. So clearly they absolutely COULD have fixed it -- they just didn't want to. It honestly felt like they were more interested in trying to upsell me into buying four new tires than actually helping me with the simple repair I came in for. If I wasn't out east and just trying to make it home, I honestly would've never stopped there in the first place. I know better. My options were either stop at the closest place and hope for a quick plug or end up calling BMW Roadside Assistance for a flatbed over a simple nail hole. I even tipped them despite them doing basically nothing for me because I try to be kind to people. Regret that now. My girlfriend went in there to get her alternator done when she left I had realized that they had robbed her. They charged her almost $1000. They didn't change the belt and it was squeaking when she returned. I went back with her and explained the problem and told him that they 100% overcharged her and then you're not even gonna add a belt so they said OK let us take care of this. They called us up and said they would put a belt in for an extra $500. The place is a scam everybody that works as a Scam artist they create problems and then charge you to fix them I would never ever ever bring my car there total rip off. Oh Pep Boys. I have so much to say to you. I've been working on cars for almost 40 years, professionally for 30. I mainly specialize in Imported cars with a concentration in emissions diagnosis and electrical repairs. I own an auto repair shop and I had skin cancer surgery in October. During the time I was recuperating, my sis had an issue with her Land Rover running poorly with a flashing check engine light. She thought she was being a good sis and not burdening me with the problems of her old Landy. For about $1800 and two weeks time, you, Pep Boys Patchogue replaced the spark plugs, a couple ignition coils and the valve cover gaskets due to oil ingress into the spark plug wells. All expected at the age and mileage and the cost wasn't far from what I would have charged had this been one of my regular customers. I returned to work middle of November and the Landy was waiting for me my first day back, running poorly with a flashing check engine light. Only my sis hadn't shared what had gone on the month prior. She was upset and embarrassed. I get through my diagnosis: one of the coils they installed had failed because one of the spark plugs they replaced was left loose and literally burned the coil. I took care of it for you Pep Boys! Except I went in and replaced all the cheap plugs and coils you installed. I was overwhelmed with jobs and never got a chance to dig into the rest of your work. I released the Landy back to my sis, but there was a persistent oil odor. Fast forward to today when I had to redo the right side valve cover where you broke two bolts in the head, attempted to seal it with extra silicone and then left the other bolts loose. Guess what else you did? Or didn't do? That's right, you NEVER TOUCHED THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE! But you charged my sis for it. So I went ahead and redid the entire job. And I actually replaced ALL the seals you should have, and extracted the broken bolts. And I replaced ALL the missing ones. And I tightened the grounds you left loose. See Pep Boys, you took advantage of my sis. And that's shitty. My sis works with autistic kids as a behavior therapist and has had cancer twice. She relies on this beast of a truck to get to her clients. And to doctor appointments. Answer me this, Manny Moe and Jack: Why would you do this? Why did you take this job on? I have been to Pep Boys Patchogue numerous times when I've had a low tire and they have plugged it. I was always happy with them until yesterday. Went there with a low tire again. They told me I needed Rear shocks, that one was leaking so bad that the tire was bald. I let them replace the tire which was close to $200 and I'm sorry I did. The total quote to me was $1108. I only did the tire and went to Toyota today, who informed me that there was nothing wrong with my shocks. They checked out the car at no charge. I'm assuming I was ripped off on the tire and possibly could've been ripped off on shocks. read more

I made my appt several weeks ago. I walked in today for my scheduled service at about 8 am (when they open) and the girl at the counter seemed very standoffish. All she said was I have to see if I have that. I am not sure what that meant. I booked my appt online weeks ago and even received a reminder about the appt. She came back a minute later and asked for my keys. I asked how long the service would take and she said an hour. I said ok, because I am going to need to wait for the car. There was one man waiting in the only seat available in their shop. I decided to go wait at Panera until the hour was up. I noticed they had texted a link for updates on the service status. It said approximate time ready 9:30 am. It was longer than the hour the assistant service manager had mentioned, but what could I do? At 9:30 I walked back over to see if the car was ready. The service manager seemed annoyed and said they've been working on your car and do you have somewhere to be or something? Originally she quoted an hour, I waited till 9:30 like the link suggested, so I didn't feel like I was rushing them. I reminded her she had said an hour and it had been an hour and a half so I was just checking. I noticed they did a free inspection too (which was nice but I didn't ask them to do that and that's probably why it took longer, and had I known I would have declined that). The girl disappeared into the back for at least 40 mins. The vibe I got was that she didn't want to be bothered with any questions about the car or updates on the service. I decided to sit on the only dusty chair and wait for an update or my car to be finished. The place was absolutely filthy I started to notice too.I noticed the link for updates about my service stopped working and it was never updated again. During this time I noticed another woman walk into the shop. She stood around with no one helping her for a good 10 mins. A man that worked there walked by her into the bathroom and didn't even ask if she needed help with anything. Finally she called their telephone number and that service manager came to the front to assist her. The vibe was that she was doing you a favor by acknowledging you. Finally I noticed my car was ready, when a man brought it up to the front of the store. The girl came back to the register to check me out. Didn't tell me an amount or anything I just inserted my card and she handed me an invoice and that was that. She didn't mention anything found in the free inspection they provided. This is poor customer service. What is the point of providing an inspection if you're not even going to discuss the findings with the customer? Confusing. When I got home I noticed that a bottle of the solution used to clean my headlights was JAMMED in my hood. I managed to get it out, and the entire bottle is full. I don't even think they used it on my car! This place is a total fail. By looking at it, it looks like they are about to go out of business. I said no and I would go elsewhere. I picked up my car when it was ready, after driving for 10 minutes, a very loud vibrating sound came from my car. I called them right away and they told me to bring it back. I did and the mechanic that did the inspection told me (without looking at the car) that I would need to fix everything outlined in the inspection report in order for the noise to go away. I would have had everything fixed if the prices weren't insane. I would have loved to upload the sound coming from my car but there is no option to. Went for tires and received a messed up car. My most reliable, highly recommended mechanic was booked solid (Hondaman in Ronkonkoma -- the BEST) so I went local for a simple oil change. They over charged ($112 seems high), gave 'complimentary' check of auto without telling me (rifling through the glove compartment, leaving items on the floor). Tried to up-sell for services I didn't ask for, forgot to put a sticker indicating when next oil change is due. Just overall lousy. Went to get an alignment on my car after I had replaced the steering rack/tie rods. Got a call saying the mechanic would not do the Alignment due to "rust" on the tie rods. The "rust" was light surface rust due to the brand new threads on the tie rod from weather. Easily could've been rubbed off with a wire brush. They tried to sell me new tie rods for $600, even though these are no more than 2 weeks old. "Mechanics" here are very incompetent and lazy. Be aware, they will try to get you to buy something that is uneeded if you don't know what you're talking about or are not mechanically inclined. Do not go here, find another shop. read more

Only one star because Yelp won't let me give 0 stars. On my way home from work and the tire light on the dash came on. Stopped at pep boys patchogue and went in and asked if someone could just check my tires. Was told "let me see if I have a mechanic" and the person disappeared behind a door. About two min later he and another man walk out talking about the service the second man just completed. They both look over at me standing there and the first man turns to the mechanic and says "oh, do you have time to check a tire" The mechanic quickly says, no, I'm busy. Then I ask if they could just put air in so I could get home, again he quickly says no, I'm busy. Thanks for nothing Pep Boys. By the way, I got in the car and drove slowly with my flashers on to GOOD YEAR in CENTEREACH. They were happy to check my tires for me IMMEDIATELY, even with two cars up on the lift. Added air to one tire that was low and offered an appointment for the next day should the light come back on. (Whic it hasn't 3 days later) All it need was three pounds of air. Took all of 3 minutes to check my tires and add a little air. I was so happy to have peace of mind to get home I handed the young man $10 and left. That's $10 in his pocket for 3 minutes of his time. I will list the positives first: it was easy to get an appointment online, and they finished working in my car much faster than I expected. They even beat their own estimate of how long it would take. Beyond that, the experience was pretty bad. I waited at least 5 minutes while the sole counter person, Fred, spoke to someone on the phone. When I was called up, I had to tell him all over again all the details of the issues I was having even though I wrote them all when I made the appointment. I was half way through telling Fred what was going on with my car, when the phone rang again. Fred spoke to this person (it appeared both calls were from other employees/other pep boys locations) for about another 3-5 minutes. When he finished, I thought he would get the rest of the story from me, but instead he proceeded to simply print up the invoice and then acted surprised when I told him there was more that the car needed. To make matters worse, they called me about 45 minutes later to ask me ONCE AGAIN what my car needed. When I arrived to pick up my car, Fred was AGAIN on the phone. If you want customers to return, at least pretend to care. Overall: very fast but very poor customer service. Won't be back. Update 6/21/19: taking off a star because the next day (today) I noticed that my newly purchased tire had been inflated to 62 psi. My owner manual says not to go over 35 and with the temperatures rising this will only increase. Very dangerous. I verified it with 2 different tire gauges (see pictures) and when I called back I spoke to Fred again who said "if it were 62 it probably would have blown". When I arrived to have the air let out Fred was again there and appearing to text on the phone (see pictures). Lauren was very helpful and Tyquwan the tech admitted he was the one who worked on my car the day before. He was apologetic and said he didn't know how this happened as he let the air out for me. You "inspected" it for "free" (whatever) and 1800 and two weeks later I had my LR "fixed?" in your parking lot with the check engine light still on, none of the work completed correctly , a "guarantee/warranty" for the parts or the work (who cares there's no way I'm bringing it back to you idiots) a bunch of explanatory fiction about bolts and how hard you worked blah blah blah. Truck didn't run any better and it was very disappointing Bottom line it's not the customers fault you did not have the skill level to do the job. Just be honest next time and say you can't do it. The service is always done and trusted, but always takes much longer then expected even with an appointment. If I schedule an oil change and service, they don't have my oil filter in stock (even though I booked the change before hand). My car ends up being there all day or I have to come back. My tires never get rotated as part of the service either. I just end up leaving because of how long I'd been waiting. I give the review four stars because they do the oil change with filter, explain everything to me, etc. I know my car doesn't have a common oil filter. The price is what it should be (not over charged). The staff are friendly and accommodating, they just need to get it together a bit. read more

Had an appointment set for 3 o'clock and I called today and they said that it was Okay if I came at 3 o'clock and I specifically asked for the technician Justen to work on my car and they had no problem and said it was perfectly fine and didn't tell me anything else besides that. I don't remember the persons name I spoke with on the phone but when driving ten minutes prior to there I ran into numerous issues. The person I spoke with I don't remember there name as well but when I got there and checked in they didn't even see my appointment In the computer which was the first weird part and after that the person who is not Travis told me that Justin wasn't able to to inspect it even though they said I was okay over the phone. I decided to let it get to me and after that I went to go grab my keys to give to the tech and after walking back in if not even 5 minutes the guy asked if I was dropping off or picking up which was also weird because we have just spoke. After all the weird occurrences they told me it would take an hour to do the full inspection so I waited patiently and when 3:40 comes which is 40 minutes after my original appointment I ask what is going on and they said Justin is working on something else and is going to start it momentarily which made me extremely upset because I didn't call and make an appointment for no reason and I never do that because the purpose of an appointment is so you don't have to wait but pep boys defeated the purpose. upset with this place but Justen perfumed an excellent inspection. read more

Inspection SCAM!!! I brought my vehicle in for NYS inspection. I was told the wait would be 15-20 minutes to get it in the shop. They got it in in 15 minutes, but then they had it on the lift for 90 minutes, and removed all four tires (NYS only requires one to be removed). Inspection should only take 15 minutes! Then they tell me I failed because of "uneven brake pad wear". That is NOT grounds for failing inspection in NYS!!! All of my brake pads are good, but I replace the pads on one rear wheel after a stuck pin, so that wheel's pads had slightly more meat than the other rear. They are just looking to sell unnecessary services. STAY AWAY!!! read more

Leaving for a friend. She picked her car up yesterday, paid for the repairs and New York State inspection that this facility claimed to have performed, and when driving last night discovered that her headlight was out. When she called today to bring it back in and have them fix it, they said they were booked up and she couldn't come in, and that it had worked when she picked up the car. None of us will ever use this service center again, and we will be reporting them to the NY DMV for charging for and clearly not performing a complete inspection. read more
