Saturday at 5 p.m.: My alternator failed as I was leaving town and I limped into the closest auto repair, which happened to be Pep Boys. I was told I should have a diagnosis by 6 p.m. All good so far. Forty-five minutes later, my car hadn't been touched. When I inquired, I was told I could blame the technician who didn't come in (and who was fired). I blamed the person checking me in for not be forthright with me, but I was assured that the next day (Sunday) I would be first in line. Sunday: The next day I was told that a technician had not come in and nothing would happen until Monday. I was told two master techs and the manager would be in. I calmly shared my disappointment at the inefficiency and misdirection I had experienced from Pep Boys. I considered towing my vehicle elsewhere, but it being Sunday decided to give it one more day. Monday: They worked on my vehicle, but had to wait for the part, so it wasn't ready. Tuesday: I got a call at 9:28 a.m. that my vehicle was ready, fully two days later than promised. I made an appointment for 1:00 on Thursday for a brake job. They estimated 2 hours to complete. I called late Thursday afternoon and they hadn't even started. I had meetings Friday and had to get my wife, who also had meetings to shuttle me. Very inconvenient. They lied to me and I didn't appreciate it. I'm slightly disappointed of the reversal of my review. Not one to normally do that. Not sure what occurred since my last servicing. Had set up an appointment to get my vehicle inspected a few days ago and had a 2:30 pm appointment. Given that I had some free time, I showed up at 1pm and was told the inspection would take 20 to 30 minutes. At 4:30 I returned to be told they hadn't touched my car yet. Looking outside I noticed it was in the same place. Was then told it would take longer to get to my car I decided to reschedule. Furthermore, I was also told that I would be charged twice for the same inspection as the inspection was for two different ride share companies. Next I left and proceeded to call both ride-share companies who then informed me that they would accept different inspection forms as long as the person inspecting it had a certain certification. Few days later I showed up early again, and about an hour and half later I was told my inspection was denied. Was told I needed new tires and subsequently quoted new tires. Slightly confused I asked the gentleman who wasn't rude by no means why. Looking bad he indicated my tires didn't have enough thread and the vehicle needed balancing to which i indicated that my vehicle had just been serviced. With a stern look he asked me by whom and I told him Toyota Limbaugh and had the paperwork as it had not been too long ago. The subject quickly changed back to tires and noted I needed new tires, to which I informed the gentleman that it was this business that had sold me new tires. Confused, one of the other employees looked it up and verified that 1 1/2 I had indeed purchased tires from this location with a life of 75k miles, and I had only put on 29k. The gentlemen then proceeded to change his story to tell me I did had thread, however not enough to pass the inspection. Found it slightly odd, that my tire mileage was less than 50% there, and I'm now being quoted another $1,200+. Seems a bit off. Again, they weren't rude, however I'm probably going to get a 2nd opinion and re-visit the Toyota dealership, because something doesn't seem right. read more

Overall a good experience. Purchased a new set of tires and price was decent and tires have been good. The only downside is when it came to a tire rotation, I scheduled an appointment and went at that scheduled time but was told they were unable to proceed with my rotation due to not having time in the schedule/day. read more

Had my truck towed to Homewood from the Summit since the starter wouldn't crank. Took to the end of the next day when I called asking if it was ready. They had to push it into a bay and complained the tow truck driver left the truck over the parking lot drain so it was uphill. I got it back the next afternoon and was told there were missing teath on the flywheel that was causing the starter to grind instead of engaging to crank. Took my new Jasper engine back to the installation shop. Flywheel was still pristine. Went to the Hueytown shop to have the new starter replaced. The Homewood mechanic failed to put the nut on the starter battery terminal. Very disappointed. read more

Arrived ten minutes late for an appointment, waited another hour and twenty four the car to go in. It then took them fifty minutes for an oil change. When we got the car back two fender liner wings were loose. True that they didn't have to be removed for the oil change but they were attached to the undertray and I would have noticed one flapping in the breeze, let alone both. They made only a perfunctory offer to help but I want interested in whatever wait was coming when I could make sure it was done right myself. They also said they rotated the tires, but mine are marked so I can tell that was a lie. Don't bother with this placer, if they can't do an efficient oil change I wouldn't bother taking a car in for anything at all. read more

Abandon hope all ye who enter here. We arrived at 6:50 and they close at 7. I quicklyfind my item but nobody can check me out because they close in 10 minutes. Yes, they close their registers 10 minutes before they close. We get sent to the auto repair register where a customer is angry because they're trying to charge him a different price for his tires. He yells for them to pull off the new tires and he'll drive out with his old tires. We stand there until 15 after trying to pay for a $5 tube of glue. Never again. read more

I towed my 2016 Jeep Compass to Pep boys, they started working on it after 5 minutes which is good. i came out to see what they're working on, they were doing scans and stuff like that then one mechanic told me about a wire that wasn't plugged, I told him that I know about it but I don't know where it gets plugged into. the mechanic told me "you gotta plug this in somewhere maybe the bumper" really? a mechanic told ME to plug something in, like I didn't just tow that shit to y'all to fix it. read more

They get the work done, although wait times are often longer than expected. Service has always been on par, but I'm not entirely sure making an appointments really make it any faster. I bring my car here for service, and have never been disappointed by the work that is done, but customer service isn't particularly exceptional, and speed is not their forte. Will I keep coming back? I scheduled an oil change early early, as soon as they opened on a Wednesday morning. I figured I would be there for an hour tops since it was just an oil change and I was first in line. I was wrong. After two hours of waiting I was getting restless and bit annoyed. I had finished all the work I could from their waiting area and was wasting time I could have used for work. I asked one of the associates when my car would be ready and all they could say was "soon". Fast forward another hour and my car is finally finished. But wait! They could get there POS system to work so I spent another 30 minutes waiting at the counter. One of the associates ended up comping the oil change (which is why they have two stars instead of one) but it was too little too late. Unless you have some time to waste, just go to Express Oil Change. It might be more expensive but what you save in time and frustration is $$$ in your pocket. read more

I took our car in because the AC was not cooling. They told us we needed an entire AC system, which would cost $2600. I told them we would figure something else out. A soon as I balked, they offered to lower the price to $1900. They assured me we needed every part on their estimate. I took the car to Car Care, where they told us we only needed one hose. It cost less than $500, and our daughter is driving a cool car once again. I don't like to give bad reviews, but I really don't appreciate being completely lied to and ripped off. He informed me that I would go to the back of the line and it would be an hour and a half before they could get to my car. I came into pep boys today because my battery had died and my battery that I purchased from pep boys was under warranty. They ran a battery test and said everything was fine despite my insistence that it wasn't since I had to jump my car twice that morning. I took it to a different mechanic and the homewood pep boys had missread the battery diagnostic, and my battery was in fact dead. When I called the Homewood location to tell them this and ask if they could put in a new battery for me, they told me to go to the Trussville location (where I was very satisfied). It seemed they just did not know what they were doing or they did not want to do a warranty replacement. After hours of distress, the Trussville Pep Boys met my needs and were much friendlier. I would choose any pep boy location over this one unless you want to waste your time. read more

I go in and drop my car off at 8:55am and am told that it would take them at least an hour and a half to get to my car due to the current backlog. What is the point of making an appointment if I'm still going to have to wait in line? Either limit your number of appointments so that I can be serviced when I arrive or do away with the system entirely. This will be the last time I take my business here. read more

This place is decent. I don't have any real deal complaints or praises. They do an ok job but I think the company as a whole lacks that human connection. They do offer deals/coupon for being apart of the rewards program. Honestly, I think that's what keeps me coming back. They welcome walk ins as well as appointments. Decent waiting area. I made an appointment yesterday to have a much-needed oil change. When I said I needed to leave and go elsewhere after being there over 2 hours and was given no progress/status of my vehicle, if my oil change had been done nor if they recommended any repairs and if so, no verbal/written break down of any anticipated charges, etc., was I told I wouldn't be "allowed" to leave until I paid $110 and was told I would not have my vehicle nor my car key released to me until I paid that amount. I was made to feel my car, my person and my key were being held hostage until I paid this unexplained fee that I never was told up front about nor what it was for until I got the receipt for my credit card. At that point I saw the receipt and saw I was charged $99 for a diagnostic fee, and to add insult to injury, was charged $9.99 for shop supplies (for repairs that never happened), then had attached to the receipt a long list of recommended repairs totaling over $1591! I was never told up front nor was advised I would be charged any fee, much less a $99 diagnostic fee nor some random fee of $9.99 for "shop supplies." There is nothing posted in the store either. After getting my receipt and the attached estimate I never got a verbal explanation except to be told "it was my starting point." Timothy, the rep who works behind the counter seems like he needs help, they have him working the phones and waiting on everyone coming in the store alone and with no help - very poor. It was only until I got my receipt that it had it spelled out what they were charging me for. If I could give this place zero stars I would. Only plus was they have a very comfortable customer lounge complete with plenty of places to plug in your phone/computer but they keep the t.v. so loud you'll have to go outside in 30 degree weather to be able to speak on the phone. I have never had such a horrible experience with any car repair place ever, anywhere. I am disgusted with what occurred. I have reached out to Pep Boys as well about my experience and my credit card company. Hopefully one of them will refund the $110 I was charged and this amount will be refunded to me. Don't go here, ever. They want to take advantage of you and your experience will be expensive and unpleasant. read more

I've tried repeatedly to give this place a chance but they seem hellbent on earning themselves a 1-star review, so here goes. There are businesses that disrespect your time, and then there's this place. I'm talking DMV and doctor's office levels of time-wasting here... ironic since the concept of Pep Boys prides itself on customer satisfaction. The first few times I came for an oil change without an appointment and it took two hours. At the time, I was willing to accept that was my bad. So, this time, I made an appointment a full day in advance. I checked in on time, was told it would take "forty five minutes". Okay, that's a tad long but this isn't Jiffy Lube, that's forgivable. I sit in the customer service lounge as I have some work to do on my phone. Awhile later, I realize an hour has gone by and no one has updated me on anything. No one comes to explain, "we're behind, we're so sorry". Based on my past experiences with this place (I once sat around for twenty minutes while my car was done and nobody bothered to tell me), I checked in to see what the status was (aka, Remind them I'm here and I'd better see my car in a bay or I'm going to explode). The guy comes back out from the bay, and says, "Oh, we have one more car to go and we'll get yours in." That was the final straw. I demanded my key and walked out. I have two theories why this place is so terrible: (1) They are incompetent. (2) They really don't want to be in the business of $20 oil changes as they don't make money on them -- so they push those customers to the back of the line, which defeats the whole purpose of the $20 oil change (quick/speedy service might mean I'll bring my car back to you for bigger repairs). And then there's the issue of the overbearing tire-fume smell in the customer waiting area -- I would advise pregnant women stay away, it can't be good for the unborn. Actually, I would recommend EVERYONE stay away from this place, and go somewhere that actually wants you as a customer. read more

Just had gotten off from work (7:30pm) and had my low tire light come one. I was trying to find a place to go and remembered they had just opened a pep boys in homewood in September. I cane in and they let me go through the back door since it was raining. They asked for my phone number and they told me I was a member. I had a nail in my tire and for a complementary tire repair! I went there today to get my tires replaced because the treading started coming off my front tire. After I explained what was wrong, Tim (who was great) informed me of what caused the treading to fall off in simple terms for me to understand (I'm not at all a car person) and then explained what needed to be done to prevent this from happening again. When it came time to give me the price of everything, he showed me his screen which displayed all my options and patiently explained what everything meant and why I was getting charged. He never tried to upsale me and was never forceful when I declined extra service. I was also in and out of there in about an hour and a half (which I was grateful for as I had somewhere to be after). Overall a great and safe experience for young women like me who are wary to go get your car looked at in fear of being over charged and taken advantage of! read more

This store has really gone down hill since they first opened. I used to get fast friendly service but not anymore. The service writers were all preoccupied with something and didn't even acknowledge my existence for several minutes and there weren't even any other customers around. When I was finally recognized the service man seemed to have a very smartass attitude. Then he took a call on the phone right in mid conversation without even saying excuse me or letting one of the other guys take the call since we were in the middle of writing up an order. I felt like I was treated very unimportant as a customer. Something told me that this wasn't going to be a good experience so I cancelled my work order and took my business elsewhere.
