I wasn't sure what to rate this place. Ultimately landed on 4. As they do a good enough job on routine repairs and maintenance. They frequently have specials on tires and brakes. Also they've done well with fluid flushes. Local mechanics don't always have the equipment to completely flush brakes or coolant. I'm sure they're fine for other routine work like oil changes, filter, etc. Keyword here is routine. I've had less luck when it was an odd ball repair. Like a difficult to service gasket between an oil cooler and engine. The local mechanic did a better job on that. Those kind of repairs will be expensive too. I wouldn't let them near a transmission either beyond a flush. You're better off looking for a specialty shop if it's a tricky engine or transmission issue. Also noticed lots of complaints on taking longer than was promised. I always plan on leaving it half a day at least. I have gotten wrong time estimates before. Last time it was blamed on a stuck rusty bolt. I guess that wasn't their fault - but just know the time estimate can be off a lot. read more

The work done is fine but this is the second time I've been told that a repair will take a certain time and it's at least double. Last time was 3 hours to change a battery. This time 3.5 hours to change 4 tires. In both cases, I was told 90 minutes. It's less a problem that it took so long, as they lied about the time. I think the best recommendation I can give to this place is that even though I moved from the area, I still bring my Jeep here. Kenny at the front desk is super friendly. Filip the mechanic always gives it to you straight and seems to have a strong passion for auto repair. Last time my car took longer than expected but they were very apologetic, gave me all available discounts (without being asked,) and set me up with a rental car at Hertz for the trouble at no cost to me. I've been to pep boys before for service at this place. Never did I have a good experience starting from the door but said lets give it a try AGAIN. Walking through the door Kenny was the only one to great me. Everyone stayed on the phones and never once looked up. I have to say Kenny was very responsive, professional and with very good customer service. For the exception of Ken everyone that walked in the was treated like they were hanging on a corner. Now the service was a simple one and I won't go into the charges. Because one is dressed down shouldn't mean anything. No one knows who's on the other side of that counter and as a business owner I don't get it now a days if you don't want to work.. don't but don't treat someones property like garbage. The "tech" was one dirty person. He left my car stained everywhere. They put paper down on the mats. Why? I have no clue because he put his dirty boots everywhere but on those papers. Awful.... I go for a oil change and a tire rotation. I mark my tires with a sharpie. They call and say car is complete and ready. I go and oil change is done and tires never rotated. What a terrible experience !! No wonder they have so many 1 stare reviews. I wish I had seen this before going. Paul and Philip were the ones helping me and might I tell you they did not help me at all. When I arrived they asked me to have a seat while they work on my estimate to change tires. After a while Philip approached me and told me how everything was so wrong with my car and gave me an esitmate of $2000 - $3000 while I was just there to change a tire. Upon telling them to return my car keys and denying service they asked me to pay $170 just to inspect my car for 15 mins (which I had never asked for firstly) and get me the estimate. I asked them politely why they did not tell me about this charge before taking my car inside (where I couldn't even see it) and they respond saying we told you how much everything cost before and that I agreed to those charges(with no proof or authorisation proof at all). They charged me $1800 to fix the radiator leak and as soon as I got the car home I saw it had an oil leak. I took the car back two days later, they assured me the new leak was not related to the work they had done two days earlier (must have been a coincidence, right?) and that it would cost me another $600 to fix the oil leak that didn't exist before I took it to Pep Boys on 17. I went in last week due to a flat tire and it could not be patched. I had to purchase one here and they installed it, no problem there. Jonathan proceeded to tell me one other tire was also very worn and needed to be replaced. Knowing that I would get better prices online, I told him I would buy a new tire elsewhere online and return back when it arrived. He said no problem and said the labor cost would be $17+tax. No problem. I return today with my new tire and explained my situation and told them my interaction with Jonathan. The manager gets called and tries to up charge me $28+tax. I patiently explain to him what I was told by his employee last week that it was $17, what changed? He pulled up my record from the week before so he knows I purchased and got a tire replaced there already. The way this manager interacted with me was completely unprofessional and demeaning. I told them my issue before they checked my car and then they said the issue had to do with the transmission which makes sense if the shifter is attached to that. I noticed that my tire sensor displayed 23PSI in one of my tires. I keep all tires inflated to 35PSI. I inspected my tire and saw that I had a nail in the very center of the tread. I brought the car to the Hasbrouck Heights location. I told the technician that I wanted the tire repaired with a plug. He tried to upsell me with a patch. However, he did agree to plug it for $25. When driving home after the repair, I was very surprised to see that the tire pressure display showed all four tires had been inflated to 55PSI. I therefore pulled the car over and checked the pressures with my gauge, which showed 55PSI in all tires!!!! I immediately let air out of the tires down to 35PSI according to my gauge. I got back into the car and 3 of the 4 sensors accurately displayed 35PSI, but one sensor still showed 55PSI. I gave it a few minutes to adjust. It did not. I turned the engine off and then back on a few minutes later, and the sensor display was broken. It did not display any pressures for any of the tires. I read the owner's manual and pressed the reset button, but that did nothing. I returned to Pep Boys to speak to the manager, Frankie. He told me that the battery just wore out, and that it had nothing to do with their work. I explained that there was clearly a correlation between his mechanic's intervention and the damage to the sensor, since all 4 sensors stopped working immediately after his mechanic worked on my car. He also expressed doubt that my tires had been dangerously overinflated to 55PSI. He is a very dishonorable businessman and a very dishonorable man. Pep Boys damaged my car and he refused to accept responsibility. I will proceed with complaints to Consumer Affairs and the BBB due to their incompetence and dishonesty. read more

Brought my car in on Monday because the check engine light was on. I told them and said I think I need a tuneup. They couldn't check the light because it turned off before they brought it in. Car ran ok for one and a half days then the light came on again on Wednesday (today). Brought it back. They checked it and said it will cost me over $2100 to fix. Called my boss and he told me to bring it to his mechanic. I showed them the diagnostic paperwork and they said most of what is on it is most likely BS. Waiting until tomorrow to find out what it will really cost. I asked my boss's mechanic if we can do a payment plan and was told that we can work something out. Never going to any pep boys again. Terrible experience. Took two hours to perform routine maintenance (oil change and tire rotation). While the time it took to perform the service was a minor inconvenience, this next sequence of events caused true angst and frustration... Technician failed to re-secure the splashguard on the undercarraige of my car after it was ready (my car requires removal of a splashguard on the undercarriage of my car to access the oil release plug). I noticed a loud scrapping sound during my ride home and upon inspection, noted that the technician failed to secure 7 of the 10 screws holding my splashguard in place, causing the splashguard to drag along the highway. I called the shop to explain the situation, and they denied any wrongdoing in their mistake in improperly securing my splashguard to the car and losing 7 screws at their shop. They refused to take responsibility for their error and offered no apologies whatsoever. The rep, Victor, told me on 5/6 that they would view the security footage and call me on 5/7 to provide additional details as to how this occurred. I never received such a phone call. I contacted PepBoy's customer care and still have yet to hear from them. BEWARE and STAY AWAY!!! Poor quality workmanship, and poor customer service. went on 21st December for getting a quote on 2011 Hyundai Sonata for struts. They gave me a obscene quote, so I told them I need some time to decide. While coming back there was some sound from the engine. I felt odd, in the evening, oil smell started coming out of my engine. I couldn't believe. These buggers forgot to fit the oil cap back. I was stranded in a dollar tree for 45 mjns. Luckily Autozone was open they had the cap and oil. These buggers would have sabotaged my engine. Please don't go. Avoid strictly. I don't know any other way engine oil cap comes off. If it creates a problem I am going to sue these buggers.if this is negligence it would have costed a life. Just to let everyone know in March I had visited the same Pepboys for alignment check as I have a 3 yr package. I was made to fix 2 tire puncture. I had driven the car to Pepboys. I trusted and got it fixed. Now I feel even that was a sabotage. It has costed me 2 new Bridgestone tires. I trusted them then, but today I am 100% sure even that was a sabotage. I unfortunately took my car here after it broke down nearby because of convenience. They decided to scam me because they probably thought I was stupid/naive for whatever reason. I was told the fuel pump needed to be replaced, oil change, brakes and a bunch of other things. $1,600 later my car was able to start again but it was not completely fixed. I took it to a REAL mechanic and come to find out the oil wasn't changed and they had actually done more damage to the car probably to get me to come back like a sucker. My mechanic changed one thing, free of charge, and it's better than it was before I took it to these imbeciles at pep boys. If I could give them zero I would, but sadly, I cannot. My company truck was dropped off yesterday at Pep Boys Hasbrouck Heights for repair of the air conditioning system, condenser, valve and fans which we paid a very high price for. After picking it up in the afternoon the car was returned with the airbag light on. When I questioned them about it, they claimed it came in that way which is an outright lie. Obviously they must have bumped something while bringing the truck into the garage which caused the sensor to go off. I brought the truck back in this morning and the mechanic still insists it came in this way and refused to fix it. No manager is on the premises as well. I asked to see the video of its movement yesterday and they refused. So they are hiding what was done to the truck to cause this sensor to go off. The mechanic is rude and nasty, no customer service to be found anywhere on the premises. We have been bringing our truck to this Pep Boys since 2011 and this is now our final visit. They right away advised me to get the shield replaced at the dealer. It is the first time a shop ever told me to get things fixed at dealer. My suspicion is my request is just too small for them. Went there for a tire rotation and alignment and it took them more 4 hours. I scheduled an appointment at 1 pm, arrived there at 12:25 pm. Waited over an hour for them to bring my car in then another hour for someone to tell me that I need my brake pads and rotors changed. I told them I will come back for that. Took them more than an hour to "actually" touch my car. Around 3ish I had enough so I went up to them and ask when is my car is going to be done. The guy said another 15-20mins because they are working on another person's car who was also doing an alignment (who arrived 2 hours after me). I waited for another 15 to 20 mins, they told me that my car is done and no that is not the worst part. While during that 4 hours time frame that I was sitting there waiting for my car, 6 other customers came and left. I walked to my car and found out that they didn't even rotate my tires, so I had gone back in. Took that 10 mins to do the rotation. My question to the manager is what kind of works were done on my car from 2 pm to 4 pm when my car is inside the shop? How long does it take for your mechanics do a simple tire rotation and alignment? You guys wasted my entire day and I had to change my plan due to your unprofessionalism and irresponsible stuff.
