This is the worst mechanical service that I have ever had in my entire life. I never (ever) gave a public review before for bad service, I usually just chalk it up and get over it, but In this case, if I can save just one person from wasting their time and money at the Hampton PEP BOYS, I will feel there is some justice out of my experience. I took/drove my vehicle (Audi Q7) to pep boys in Hampton Thursday morning 6/20 to diagnose a small coolant leak, (literally drops on the ground and I saw the coolant level was a little below the minimum, which is how I knew it was a coolant issue instead of the AC refrigerant) this was actually going to be my second diagnostic in the same week. The first test, a mechanic who did a visual test, the leak was so minor, the mechanic could not tell exactly where it was dripping from, but determined from the driveway drops, that it could be coming from the small radiator hose at most. I decided to give pep boys a try to diagnose where the exact location of the leak was coming from. Drove the truck in Thurs 6/20 in the morning. Friday evening 6/21, which was the first call I received, (two full days, for a coolant diagnostic before they called me) the manager Rebecca, advised me that my coolant pipe needed to be replaced before they can even test it, because the leak was too bad. With that statement, I'm thinking to myself "that's odd, they can't do a pressure test through a few drops of coolant??" At this point, I knew the wrong establishment had my vehicle. I advised Rebecca I was going to pick my vehicle up and take it to a Audi specialist who I felt more comfortable with. I arrived at pepboys within the hour, I paid the $40 for the diagnostic fee, Rebecca handed me my key. I went to my vehicle which was parked in a different location, I popped the hood to make sure the coolant level was at Max and I saw water spraying from two places, the engine and the radiator hose (which was completely disconnected and just sitting on top of the engine, the water drained out within seconds, (meaning that they just put water in it before I got there) Rebecca advised me this is how I drove my car there, IMPOSSIBLE! A straight lie! I ensured the coolant level was at Max before I drove the 10 mins , there were no low coolant warnings and the coolant needle was between the H and C, never going close to the H, like it has been for years, also no visible leaks in the spot I was parked in at pep boys. I complained immediately to one of the mechanics, (well, someone with a pep boys shirt) that this was not the condition they received my vehicle and I should have been able to drive it out like I drove it in.. Rebecca convinced me that coolant pipe repair/replacement (1000.00) should fix the issue (with a C. Y. A. DISCLAIMER about if it overheated and damaged something else, they were not responsible). I know for a fact my truck never over heated in my care). With my truck in that condition, it couldn't be driven and to avoid extra tow fees, I authorized the repair. 6 days later, Wednesday 6/26, I received a call that my truck was ready for pick up, I was advised it was tested and there was no more leaks. After retrieving my vehicle, I reached home (10 Mins away).. with the exact issue I took it in for, coolant leaking in the EXACT same driveway spot. I let the engine cool, checked the coolant, and again below minimum. THIS IS THE EXACT ISSUE I HAD BEFORE THE DIAGNOSTIC but at this point the leak was worst than when I took it in. (More than drops) I called pep boys, advised Rebecca my issue wasn't fix..she advised me to drop it off again. I had it towed back to them Thursday 6/27 morning (to decrease my liability). (No call or updates for the entire day) I called Friday 6/28 morning and was informed by the manager Rebecca, the leak could be coming from the super charger and it will be almost 600.00 more just to diagnose it. WHATTT??? the dealer don't even charge that much for a diagnostic! Especially after I just spent 1000.00 the day before and they also charged me 75.00 extra for the labor warranty. Rebecca advised if it happened while it was with them, they would have been able include it in the repair, but driving it 10 mins away AFTER they said it was good, They will not do anything to help me (in a very nasty/nice attitude and tone, the kind that say go "F" yourself in a very polite manner). I immediately picked up my vehicle and made an appointment with dealer. Now, I'm back at my original issue which is now worst, $1000 out of pocket, $300 out of pocket for a Rent-A-Car, a entire week of time wasted, and my original issue has not been touched. this is unacceptable! I will never take a foreign vehicle (or any vehicle) to this establishment again to try to save a few dollars. My time and peace of mind is priceless. 29 minute oil change is a joke. Arrived at store when it opened at 7:00 after waiting for some time was notified that the oil change tech did not come in until 8. Was 1st for oil chain and still not finished until after 9:00. Only explanation on what happened to 29 min guarantee was that it was busy. Extra 15 min to wait on checkout. read more

Worst auto experience I have ever had. Their mechanics are slow, unmotivated and they do their job half assed. 3 trips and 4 hours of my time to have 4 tires mounted and balanced. First trip took 3 hours to just put the tires on the rims. 2nd trip the next day was to put the proper amount of air in the tires and reset the TPMS. Sure I could of done it but the damn car tells you when the tire pressure is low! And yet the mechanic still pulled the truck out and gave me my keys. Lets not mention how slow their check out is. 15 min in line just to pay. Screw this place, go to a different auto parts store for parts and a better mechanic for everything else! read more

My truck breaks down on a Friday nigh, I had to have it towed and my insurance decided to send my truck to Pep Boys. All I needed was my gear shifter cable and bolt replaced. The next day, it took me hours of calling and being left on hold for the mechanic to tell me I needed all of these expensive diagnostic tests done prior, adding up to about $700 not including the only repair I actually needed. It took me 10x telling him "Do NOT run those tests. I WILL NOT pay for them. Replace my gear shifting cable and bolt please." I continue to call for updates and get no response. Finally Tuesday the mechanic, last minute, calls to tell me my truck is ready. I wait in line for and hour to get my keys and find that my truck has been broken into, my sun glasses are broken in half everything in my console has be thrown on the floor and stepped on and my jumper cables are missing. The mechanic didn't put my console back on properly, threw my cup holders on the floor and left my air conditioning dash hanging by a cord. The manager, Larry, gives a BS speech, says he will watch the vide, pay for my sun glasses and contact me in a few days. It's been over a week so I give Larry a call. He tells me he watched the video and didn't find anything, his mechanic found my truck like that, and has so answers. Why wouldn't the mechanic mention this to a manager or me, the owner, when we spoke on the phone? My truck, clearly, had been ransacked. Larry should be ashamed of his service and his mechanics service. My truck may be old but service is service and my money is exactly the same and someone with a 2017 BMW. I Cant even begin to say how mad I am right now . Monday I took my truck in to have an inspection done. They told me it wouldn't be today and that would be Tuesday and that I could pick it up then . So I rolled my windows up and dropped the truck off. I received a call that I had missed and got a voicemail saying that they had a question about my truck and give them a call back. Since I wasn't expecting Monday and I was busy with other things I didn't get the message. Here's where things went bad. So I call Tuesday to pick up my truck and they tell me that it's ready and it did fail inspection due to a wheel bearing . Okay no big deal I can do that myself and I'll bring it back another day. Tuesday was a giant rainstorm and when I went to pick up my vehicle the mechanic had left the passenger side front window a quarter of the way down. Needless to say rain soaked my entire passenger front side seat, door ,and floor. When I went inside they were like do you want a towel or something? A. NO. The manager named Al called the mechanic out and he came and looked at the door and said everything was working fine. I said I understand everything is working fine now but I would like a guarantee that if anything goes wrong with in the next few weeks that you will fix it. Reluctantly he wrote a note on my receipt. I then had to ask him to sign the receipt to make sure that this wasn't just something I wrote down on this receipt. Today I get in my truck and I'm hit in the face by a pungent smell of mildew remotely nasty wet rain smell. This has really kinda upset me this morning being this is the first newer vehicle I've ever had. So I'm going to go up there again today and speak to them again about what they wanna do about this old water smell and I will return here with all the details and see if we can raise their star level from a 1 to at least a 3 . read more

I brought my car in at noon for 4 tires, and was told 2 hours as there was 1 person in front of me. 6 hours later and the vehicle was still not seen. Asked several times how much longer and was told "you're next" as I watched staff slowly bring in thier buddy's cars one at a time ahead of me. Was ready to spend a 1200.00 dollars here on new high end tires. Guess they don't like money! God, why are people so lazy? "Lavar" at the front counter possesses a nasty, truculent, a mocking attitude. He is totally money-hungry in the way he treated me this morning. As well, he affirmed he does not need to show any consideration for customer's interests and concerns in performing his work. He treated me personally in a quite mean spirited manner ... and that is what he got back from me. "Brian" on the other hand is a nice person and possesses great customer skills. I was willing to have my work done at Pep Boys because of his caring attitude after being ripped off at a Pep Boys on the Va Beach Hilltop. But customer service begins at the first contact and LAVAR DESTROYED my confidence TOTALLY in how Pep Boys hires counter workers. DONT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY!! If I could give zero stars I would. I have been using pep boys for 20 years and the pep boys in Hampton, VA is extremely sub par. The store is dirty, cluttered and all around unpresentable for a professional establishment. The employees are slow with no sense of urgency, the maintenance and the production levels are subpar. I came at 0700 to do a Virginia safety inspection, a 30 minute inspection. There were 4 cars in front of me and was told that my car wasn't going to be ready until the end of the day. Supervisors and workers are not productive nor do they consider efficiency as a priority. The store only has one inspector and a slew of maintenance personnel. I was told the inspector needed to do maintenance to pass the inspections. I'm sorry but, If you have one inspector and four maintainers you need to shift rolls as soon as a problem is discovered and move to the next inspection. Production is a very easy concept to grasp but, these people just don't get it. I am a dedicated pep boys customer who has used many pep boys locations around the United States and have always been happy in general but, this by far is the worst experience I've ever had, it's so bad here, the manager, the owner and the franchise should be embarrassed by the quality of this location. If you have time go to Portsmouth or Newport News locations go, it is everything a pep boys should be. Went to pep boys to get my car inspected at 7 am. Around 9am they tell me I need about $400 worth of work done to my rear breaks to pass inspection. So I reject it about 11am they finally come back with my keys . I ended up going to a break specialist who said they told me false information and that what I needed done would only be $141. So I go back to pep boys to get reinspected. That takes another 3 hours. Once they say it's done I come back with my dad and he tells them about me going to a specialist who said they were trying to get over on me . Then the girl at the desk starts arguing with him and being a smart ass instead of giving us my keys so we could leave . Needles to say PEP BOYS TRIES TO GET OVER ON PEOPLE AND TELL THEM THEY NEED ALL THIS WORK DINE WHEN THEY REALLY DON'T. Something fishy is going on there so BEWARE! Never going back again . read more

I made an appointment on the website for 11 am, which was accepted. I arrived at 10:45. At 11:40, I am still waiting for the service to begin. Very misleading, as they do not tell you that the appointment only means that you are next "when and if a tech becomes available". They do not tell you when you come in that your appointment really means nothing. They should not allow appointments, if they are not going to honor them. Poor business practice. read more

Slow and a rip off. Got my radiator fan replaced for 350. Found out later it was less than half to get done someplace else. Drove the car 3 blocks and the fan popped off. My most recent experience was the absolute worst customer service. I have completely made up my mind to only go to the location in Portsmouth. The location in Norfolk moves slow and the location in Hampton has horrible customer service. Prior to January 21st I called to schedule an appointment for my tires to be changed. I was told that I couldn't schedule an appointment but if I were to come in they would be able to help me with hopefully no more than an hour wait. On January 21st I enter the store and was told that they couldn't help me but to return tomorrow and I should be okay. On January 22nd I entered the store and was told they had an unexpected meeting so I should try tomorrow. I explained to the gentleman of the advice I received previously which his response was he currently has 3 cars that needs to be completed by closing and no one knew about the meeting until a few hours ago. Meanwhile, he didn't know that prior to me entering the store I stopped a technician that told me that there were no cars in the bay, no service tickets were in but he was about to complete an online class for the job. He stated he was unsure of how many guys were going to complete the class but I should be in and out because they didn't have any open tickets. read more

When I got there at 1245 the said they couldn't keep my appointment because someone else already had that appointment time. What is the point of an appointment then? Thought I was in an episode of Seinfeld. When they finally got to my vehicle it took them over an hour and a half to change the oil and rotate the tires. Ridiculous. I brought my truck in because of low voltage issues (alternator going out) and my rear brake redone. They gave me a reasonable price for the service and I left. They had my truck in the shop for 10 days. When I went to pick my truck up the price had gone up and when I went to ask if they fixed my alternator. The worker stated "you have 2 batteries so it should last longer then most vehicles" basically saying they hadn't fixed the issue. When I went to start my truck the voltage was still down and my ABS light and check engine light were on and also my speedometer did not work at all. When I arrived home I noticed that my transmission speed sensor was completely disconnected/cut. When I called pep boys they said that "they don't mess with that stuff and I should take it to the dealership" when I asked how it got cut they said "it was cut before I brought it in". I had no lights on before I brought it in and my speedometer worked prior so I have no idea what they did. They were disrespectful and didn't even care to try and help me. read more

I would like to give this store a good review but unfortunately the service I received was truly bad. I when in for a brake job which cost me over 1500.00 with the verbal guarantee that this work would take care of the problem. Well, job was not done right the first time. I call next day for an appointment to take my vehicle in as the vehicle was unsafe to drive and the only way they would take care of me was on "Stand By". I made an appointment and the said the problem was fixed, well on my way to work the next day the front end of my vehicle was shaking and smelling like something was burning. When I stop and I look at my front wheel the brakes were smoking hot. I call again and the told me to bring it in so I did, once I got there the mechanic took it and drove it because he did not believed that the vehicle was not working properly well 6 hours later and after the mechanic replaced everything he had installed before the supervisor informed me that to get the vehicle road worthy I had to pay them another 750.00. WHAT!!!, he said that they needed to replace two other parts. Sorry but those parts were operational when I brought it the first time. Anyway, after a long debate with the supervisory team (they tag team on me) they agree to drop the price to 350.00. I made an appointment online to have my state inspection done. When I showed up at the appointed time, the man at the desk gave me some nonsense about how I would have to wait nearly 6 HOURS before my car could be seen because they weren't allowed to make appointments for state inspections, and it was first come, first serve. What is the point of having an online appointment scheduler with an option for state inspections if you can't make appointments for state inspections? Nowhere on the website did it warn me that this would happen. Needless to say, I took my business elsewhere. Edit: I'm changing my rating to 3 stars instead of 1 because the manager of Pep Boys called me yesterday and did everything in her power to fix the problem for me. I really appreciate the apology and explanation. Apparently the online appointment service is very new, and they're still working the kinks out of it. I'd already gotten the state inspection done elsewhere, so she offered to send me a free oil change certificate as an apology for the misunderstanding. read more

Nope.... juuuuuuust nope. You don't get my business if you're rude. Period. Three employees standing at the counter, NONE of them helping a line of 3 customers, all of whom were in uniform. Once ONE PERSON finally did help, he was nothing but snappy to everyone in front of me, as well as customers on the phone. Then he'd go back to not helping people in the store. 2 folks in front of me and I was in line 15 minutes. When it finally was my turn, all I needed was a state inspection - and I legitimately needed one, because I had come straight from the DMV with Virginia plates that were brand new. The inspector - his name was Andrew - snapped at me "No. I don't have time for you. There's two people in front of you and you came too late. I only have a half hour." There is NO sign designating that inspections need to be brought in until 4pm, and when I explained that I had no inspection sticker and that the DMV has no grace period, the other employee gave literally less than an ounce of care. I was ready to throw my money at you because of an urgent situation. As a result of your unprofessional behavior, I'll never set foot in your store again. read more

The service sucks I went in for an oil change and they told me i get a free tire rotation with it but they never did it I can see that the tires were never rotated and I watched them the whole time. Then they parked my truck outside and told me I need a new air filter so I told them to go ahead and do it and it sat there for and hour and I asked how long it was gonna be they told me it was done and didn't do nothing. Dropped the car off early (@8:30) and went back at just before 11 only to be told it wasn't done but was the next one in and one was coming out then. I asked if it would be ready by 11:30 and was told Yes! I had my friend continue driving me and went back, not at 11:30, but at 12:20. It was STILL not even started!!! I was told if I could leave it another hour or so they could get it in. When I said no, they continued to lift it like they were going to do it anyway!! I've taken my cars to Pep Boys for over 15 years and have probably spent several thousand dollars there in repairs over the years. I took my mini van there last week for an oil change and they told me my front brakes were installed wrong and I needed new pads as well as rear brakes. Something didn't sound right, especially since my van recently passes an inspection. So I took my car for a second opinion and they told me my brakes were fine and had at least another year of life left on them. I just wonder how much money I have wasted over the years on bogus repairs they said I needed. Will never let them fix a thing in my cars ever again. read more

I was told an hour and a half for an oil, I waited two hours, when I went to check on my car, it was still in the parking lot, no one had touched it. I went and asked what the wait was, and he told me it would be another hour and a half, to 2 hours. When I told him that I was told it would take an hour and a half, he said that was impossible. I took my mother's car in to be serviced and Stacie was more than kind and patient in addressing our questions and thoughts concerning the maintenance work I thought should be done for my mom's car. I really really appreciate the kindness of people when you are trying to ensure your parents are getting the best treatment with out taking advantage of the situation. So I went in to this location Tuesday October 20, 2015 because my 2007 VW Jetta was leaking coolant. After paying $39 for them to look at it and determine the issue I was told I needed a heater house assembly which runs anywhere from $180-$220 and that the labor would be $200 as well. I thought that was a little steep for the labor but I understand my car is difficult to work on so I didn't complain. They gave me a part number and said they wouldn't get it until Thursday. I decided I wanted to find it so I contacted BAP-Geon in Newport News who said they could get it the next day at 9am. All went well getting the part and I went back to Pep Boys the next day. After waiting about an hour I was told I got the wrong part. I showed them that the part matched the paperwork they gave me and they seemed confused. After making a few calls to try and get a diagram from their partner techs it seemed like they weren't making progress. A simple Google search later and I found the part they needed which was a $50 hose. A hose they had the entire time in the back. After the mistake they offered me nothing for my time and if it weren't for the professionals at BAP-Geon (who I highly recommend) I would've been charged a restocking fee on that $200 part. All in all I missed a day of work for no reason and did some of their leg work. I hope BAP goes after them for that restocking fee since the gentlemen there remembered the call where they were asking for that part even after finding out it was wrong. read more

So last week I scheduled an appointment to bring my car in for an oil change and inspection and two other people had the same appointment time as me and then they tell me when I get there that they do not do inspections. I ended up spending three hours there with an appointment. After I vent to an employee about my previous experiences they told me to bring my car in he told me to bring my car in at 7 AM the following Saturday so he could do my inspection. I come in today only to find out that they don't start until 8 and that employee does not even do inspections, he doesn't come in until 11and there are still two other cars in line left over from last night. So, failed accommodation effort and another wasted Saturday. Oh and the guy at the counter told me I should have read the fine print...whoa....yeah. Its December 21, i go into pep boys in hampton looking for 2 battery jump boxes to jumpstart cars. Look around store i dont see them but thats cool cause till today i liked strolling thru pep boys. Very few customers so they were not busy!! Two guys behind the counter guy (a) was helping customers at a register. Guy (b) was a young man just standing behind the counter facing the back of the store. I figured id go to the counter and just ask guy (b) where i could find the jump boxes. I approached the counter and he looked and me and i said "hey man, where can i find the jump boxes, ive seen them advertised so i know you sell them"... guy (b) looked at me and said "your gonna have to go over there and ask him, im about to clock out"pointing to the line for guy (a).. i didnt ask him to do any work at all, just point me in the right direction. . But because he was "about to clock out" he didnt feel it was nessessary to help me.. i was planning to buy 2 jump boxes at about $130 each.. thats a $260 sale they lost tonight. WORST SERVICE EVER!!!!!! IF I COULD GIVE THEM ZERO STARS I WOULD. I had an unforseen issue with my brakes last minute before i was supposed yo go out ot town.I dropped off my vehicle at 7am requesting break service on a Sat morning. I explained to the gentleman who serviced me, I needed to be out of town for a wedding at 5pm that day, and he assured me that he would do his best to work in an appt and have my vehicle ready by noon. Later on that morning I called and he told me the damage to my brakes would take longer to repair and the vehicle should be ready by 1pm. I explained I needed to make it to the wedding which was 3hr drive away and if the car was not going to be ready by 5, then i would need to get a rental. He assured me the car would be ready by then. I show up at 1pm and they tell me it would be another 1.5 until the car is ready. I frantically run to the closest car rental place up the road only to find out they have no rentals available and all the other rental places were already closed. It tool several more hours until they had my vehicle ready, and i missed the wedding I had to attend. I wish they did not keep telling me they would have my vehicle serviced on time, so that I could have made other arrangements early on in the day, to get a car rental. I moved to Hampton over 20 years ago and used Pep Boys on Mercury Blvd from time-to-tme........But after my last experience, NEVER AGAIN! I dropped my Mitsubishi Eclipse off at 7:00 a.m. to have a timing belt replaced.......When I stopped by after work around 5:00 p.m. to pick up my car, there was a "problem"???!!! They "claimed" that they had to wait for parts, etc, but, I had to wait until "9:00 p.m"!!! after working all day, until they finally finished! But, the worse part is that the next couple of days, I kept hearing a noise in my engine......When I took it back, they could not hear it, even though you clearly could! I took it to another repair shop and they laughed!!......Why?....."ONE" - because I took it to Pep Boys.........and "TWO" because when they took off the timing belt cover, the belt was so loose that it could be taken off by HAND!......And to top that, there was a 3-inch BOLT loose inside just tumbling around and could have really damaged my engine!!!....... I paid a whopping $785.00 to Pep Boys for nothing and had to have the work RE-DONE by another shop. And PEP Boys never reiimbursed me for their shoddy work even though I had a 30-day guarantee!!.......... So, thanks to Pep Boy's "INCOMPETENCE", I had to pay to have my timing belt installed "TWICE"!!.......TWICE!....CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT! I WILL NEVER USE THAT SORRY PLACE AGAIN!........AND I DO "NOT" RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO EITHER!! P.S. - THEY HAVE THE "RUDEST" AND MOST "UNPROFESSIONAL" SALESPEOPLE AT THE COUNTER THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN! read more

Went in for and oil change yesterday and was told I need a new power steering pump and was told they had it in stock. So I said go ahead and replace it. I was to it would take about two hours to complete. So a waited. They started working on it at 10:30 am . At around 1 I had a employee go ask what was taking so long. He came back and told me the it would be another 2 hours. So I waited at around 15:30 I was told they had to order the part that the one They and in store was the wrong one. So I asked why took so long for them to figure out that the part they Had on hand was the wrong one. And their was no way for them to know this till they got the part of my car . So they ordered the new part . And they would have my car done today. The is a udder disregard for the customer. And is completely disrespectful to the me to have me waste my who day waiting for my car . I will never patronize this establishment Agin! read more
