Last week and this week I had a very frustrating experience at the Pep Boys in Exton, PA (Store 0158), and I want to share this as a cautionary note for others scheduling services here. I ordered tires online and had them delivered to this location, along with an oil change. Unfortunately, they didn't place an oil-change reminder sticker on my car, claiming they had run out. Then, I scheduled a vehicle inspection for 9:00 a.m 10/7 and rearranged my work schedule (I'm a nurse, so this was not easy). At the last minute, I was told the inspector called out and I'd need to come back the following day. I was promised a small discount and rescheduled again. When I showed up this morning, they had no record of my appointment and no emissions stickers available. The staff was unprofessional and unsympathetic. Overall, this location's communication and customer service were very disappointing. If you plan to use this Pep Boys, I'd strongly recommend double-checking your appointment and having a backup plan. Currently I am driving around with outdated inspection stickers but plan on finding another place today. read more

Dropped my van off for inspection knowing it was going to need suspension work because of a rattle that started in the front about 6 months back and tires needed replacing....They called me back in a few hours and said the bracket on one of the struts was compromised But it was not bad enough to fail inspection And my tires would pass but probably not last until the next inspection....Love their Honesty and the fact that they did not rush to sell me parts... I had them do All the work anyway which they did in a timely manner Over the Labor day weekend ...Also a strut Rod broke upon them removing it and they put on a new one Free of charge....Super happy with their work and the rattle is gone and I should have No problems in the snow this coming season...Highly Recommend!!!! read more

Took a 1 pm appointment online(www.pepboys.com) and reached the store sharp at 12:55 pm. I was shocked to hear that store has no respect or regard to online appointment booking system. They maintain their own booking system for which we have to call and book. They are not in sync or pay attention to online booking system. The guy at counter was so relaxed in asking me to complain about the online booking system. He showed my a white sheet with few names and numbers saying these guys have called and booked. I don't understand why online appointment booking system exists when stores are not in synced with it or have no respect for it. It was sheer waste of time and effort to drive all the way to store only to hear that online appointment booking system has no value. Please close your website and online appointment booking system. I read the negative reviews and admittedly I had reservations on past recommendations for repairs that were expensive. At this point I don't know if I was ripped off or not. However, I've taken my cars to pep boys since I was a kid and usually had faith that what ever they said was needed. That being said, I was ecstatic when they called me that my car was ready. When I got there they told me that I needed new rotors and brake pads but wrong parts were initially installed by them so they installed new parts at no charge! They could have told me I needed the parts and I would never have known and paid for it. So, whether the bad reviews changed things or different people, they are honest with me. read more

Pathetic service and a very RUDE person at the counter. I went for a flat tire and they charged (robbed) me of $538. They refused to fix it and forced me to buy a new set of tires and oil change. They deserve NEGATIVE STARS. read more

Went in for an inspection and was given a laundry list of items wrong with my car. Stated I needed tires (mine had less then 10,000 miles on them and under full warranty with another company), bearings, alignment (again covered by the company that did my tires). Was told it would be $1200 to pass without doing the tires. Took to another mechanic and nothing they stated was wrong and passed with an honest mechanic. Had a horrible experience. Was buying new tires for my luxury vehicle and being not so well versed with all things automotive, asked a bunch of questions to make sure I understood what I was paying for and what everything means. Was given all the confidence in the world only to realize a day after the service that WRONG SIZE tires were mounted. Had to go back in and get the right ones refitted. Was told an alignment and calibration is not needed when tires are just being switched out, but honestly if a simple thing is screwed up, how can I as a customer trust anything that's now being told to me? Suffice to say you've lost my business forever, and will tell about me experience to every friend and neighbor I know so they don't suffer in similar or different ways. The only saving grace was Andy who was helpful in answering questions (albeit at times irritable, which isn't called for - I'm spending $1000 at your place and I am ENTITLED to enquire about every detail). Especially when the people working under you make an obvious error and make you all look like amateurs. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

WARNING: CHOP SHOP. DO NOT GO HERE. YOUR CAR PARTS WILL BE STOLEN, AND PEP BOYS REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. My family member dropped off their car not even a few days ago to get the battery repaired. There was a snow storm. When we went to pick up the car -- in a historically SAFE neighborhood -- the catalytic converter and O2 sensors were gone. The car sounded like a bomb was going off when the engine was started. The lead "mechanic" named Antonio and had the audacity to call US "disrespectful" simply for asking him to wear a mask, and then HUNG UP on us before coming out to the car, of course, without a mask. He opened the hood was able to tell us that within 3 seconds of their "evaluation" that these parts were missing (HMMM...) but not after giving us an unbelievably rude, thoughtless attitude. The "manager" responded to this shocking event with an equally full-of-BS attitude that "someone cut out the parts, I guess." We then asked how something like this could have possibly happened, and their answer was "Well, there are no cameras on that particular spot." Sounds pretty suspicious to me. Let me add that not a single person at this FAKE establishment made any attempts to investigate how this happened or apologized for such a terrible incident. Because we couldn't afford to go to a REAL auto body shop, we had to go here. Now the car is stuck and not a single "employee" or "manager" is doing anything to apparently stop the so-called "thieves" from coming back and stealing more parts... AKA "Pep Boys" are at fault and no one can prove ANYTHING since security cameras were conveniently MISSING! Not even the police, who came to the scene, could help since there was no evidence. very bad customer service! there's a tall white guy that attends to people so RUDE and very ARROGANT!! I have tried him now for like 3 times with the same attitude. He doesn't address customer well and act like his always having a BAD, and throws that on customs. I had to even tell my wife turn back the car and not bring in the other car while I was there with another, because I was treated very rude, disrespectful and also threw my papers on the table without saying anything till I left. My advice... you really need to put someone with a good customer service attitude to this branch Exton pa. I have been to pep boys at brookhaven, and I won't mint to always drive 45min to the place everytime because they're all so nice there and have a very good customer service experience. If I could give negative stars I absolutely would, as I was giving my information the mechanic walked in with a bad attitude and then I got my car inspected and they failed me because my bumper supposedly has sharp edges which confused me and they didn't explain anything stayed silent and still charged me 71 dollars so I took my car somewhere else and they passed me with no problems and said the body work is a recommendation because it causes no danger what so ever. All the previous reviews about slow service are absolutely correct. Made an appointment for tire installation at 9 a.m., and they didn't even start working on my car until 11:30. I would like someone from Pep Boys to tell me if that's acceptable!? I'm sure I'll get an owner response telling me to " send details of your visit to pepsocial@pepboys.com" but that only routes the complaint back to the same unprofessional manager I dealt with for three hours yesterday. On top of all that, my tires were not filled to the correct pressure and I'm missing a valve stem cap. Extremely sloppy and unprofessional service. I made an appointment to have my car state inspection done, when I arrived there as per my appointment, they said I will have to wait 2.5 hours. Generally, this inspection takes 30-45 minutes at any other auto-shop, but anyway since I was there, I decided to walk around to the shopping center with 2 small kids. After 2.5 hours when I got back, they said the inspection had failed because my rear wiper blade was showing wear and tear and had to be replaced, but they did not have the wiper blade in stock. That is just poor customer service and lack of parts, anyway, they set another appointment Tuesday morning at 9 AM, no other day was available, especially on the weekend. Now this means I have to take time off from work drive 30 minutes, and knowing how fast they work, would have missed 2 hours of work. Anyway, I missed that appointment, went back after 31 days, on a Tue, the man at the desk said, you are past the grace period of 30 days, PA law, we will have to charge you $26 and do a full new inspection, I said ok, can you do it right now since I am here, he said, I will have to come back Thursday at 1 PM, once again I would have to miss work and waste 2 hours because they will need to do the whole inspection again, horrible, horrible customer service. I called Wed evening, to ask if I can come in at 8 AM, instead of 1 PM on Thursday, the guy on the phone said, "sure, but we will not be able to get to you car till 1 PM", because we are booked solid till 1 PM. My advice to PEP-BOYS, if you idiots cannot do an inspection within 30-45 mins and do not have a simple part like the rear wiper for a Ford Explorer, then please do not set appointments and waste everybody time, just tell your customers upfront, "although we am setting up an appointment", you will be waiting for 2.5 hours" for an inspection and we do not have simple parts, like a wiper blade either. I have gone to PEPBOYS before, never again. I also found out that later when I went to another auto shop for an inspection that there is no requirement/option for rear window wiper in the state inspection form, so basically their staff was just giving me a run-around for no good reason. Would give 0 stars if I could... came here to get new tires balanced and mounted . Guy said that they couldn't get my front left tire off after apparently exhausting all of their resources. Then basically alluded to the fact that he didn't bother trying to even take off any of the other 3 tires stating that this is a common problem with the make of the car. Been going to Exton Pep Boys for years with three different cars. Was in recently for an oil change and State Inspection. Was told I needed an inner and outer tie rod right front. I declined the almost $700.00 service as the parts were marked up 4 times what they sell for retail in the store for (inner tie rod store price $34.00) quoted cost was $117.98 and (outer tie rod store price of $29.00) quoted $102.88 plus the famous misc labor charge of $253.86. Went to the dealership (Lincoln) who said the inner tie rod was fine and the outer tie rod was just starting to show the slightest play and they would have never noted it. Had the dealer replace the outer tie rod, went back to Pep Boys for the follow up State Inspection and was told the inner tie rod needs replacement. They brought me out to the shop where the tech could barely get the tie rod to move (showing a worn part). I really should have gone to the Lincoln dealership from the beginning. Will never trust Pep Boys again. State Inspection was a pass at the dealership while Pep Boys still maintains that tie rods need replacement on my 2013 Lincoln MKX with 69k miles. From what I am told, inner tie rods do wear out and break but its not common on newer cars that have been well maintained. I should mention that the prior State Inspection was done just 10 months ago with the odometer showing just 61k miles. My family and three cars will never use Pep Boys again. Remember just because a mechanic says you need repairs on your car does not mean you actually do!!! Get a second estimate and question all repairs and quotes especially if you go to the Exton PA location, avoid this guy at all costs.... read more

Let me just start by saying if I could give 0 stars I would. I needed a quick tire fix and this was the only place open but I will never be returning again. They told me it would only be an hour wait and a the price would be $32. Long story short they lied. 4 hours later we were still waiting and what had turned into a quick fix was now a 2 tire replacement with a $280 bill. This was the only shop open in the area on the given day being a holiday and I had a flat tire. Went into the shop needing one front left tire due to the flat. I was quoted a hour wait. 2 hours later the front desk guy comes and grabs me- I knew there was something shady going on. TS informed me I needed 4 new tires due to putting a "10 on the front left when the rest of the tires come out to a 5". I believe, they were taking advantage of a female who they thought did not know what she was talking about. After minutes or argue I gave up and allowed them to put the new tires on the car. When my car was done all TS's present could not figure out how to turn my tire pressure light off. I, as the customer, had to come out and show them how to do this. They work on cars daily, shouldn't they know how to do this? After leaving the shop I got onto the highway to go to my destination when going over 55mph my stirring wheel was shaking and when letting go of my steering wheel for 10-15 seconds my car was drifting to the right. NEVER before did I have this issue. I called the shop immediately and they told me they could fit me in next week for a free balancing and alignment again. Today, Friday, I went into the shop for my alignment. After, while driving home my car is continuing to drift even more to the right now when letting go of the wheel. I called to discuss this and speak to a manger. I was told there was no manager in store and they could fit my car in the following week for an alignment again. Needless to say, I will never be returning here. You go in with one issue and leave with so many more. Good spot to waste a lot of money and get taken advantage of. read more

I scheduled a mid afternoon appointment for 4 tires the day before. Showed up the next day a little early. Was told by Jimmy (manager? & dbag) that it wouldn't take a long time and I could wait. After all, they have a sign saying "express tire service." Well almost 5 hours later, I was finally leaving with 4 new tires. They were under-inflated as my tire pressure warning light was on. And the alignment was not done. I had to come back. Ricardo felt my pain. I was patient and sad. I wasted a portion of my evening waiting. If Jimmy had been upfront I would have left the car there and gotten a ride. Ricardo communicated well with me whereas Jimmy was no where to be seen and was horrible. Supposedly they are short staffed at this location for a reason. Some sort of hiring freeze? And they have local trade school techs working at this location for $7.25/hour. I just needed tires. I wouldn't come to a Pep Boys for anything to begin with. Maybe not even tires again in the future. read more

Oil change. Probably one of the more easy automotive tasks; however, this place makes it a nightmare. Scheduling is done online and you're thinking great... looks like they will be able to do it today. Nope you go there wait in line for them to tell you they had several walk in appointments ahead of you and your 30min oil change will now take you an extra day. Pick it up tomorrow. Found my car had a dead battery, got AAA to come and jump it. They said I should probably get a new battery so I drove straight to Pepboys in Exton. I got there it was 7:30. It says they do full service until 9 PM and I knew my job wouldn't take long but was turned away. The guy even said "come back in the morning and I can do it". I said what makes you think it will start in the morning, he just shrugged. If I cant count on them to help me out with this I sure as heck wouldn't count on them to do anything major. The service center staff do not seem like they know what they're doing half the time, they make you wait a ridiculous amount of time for something that shouldn't take long, and they are not gentle or careful with your vehicle and parts. Few weeks ago dropped of my 2007 subaru legacy for inspection. Car had 90k miles on it and they failed it for an inner tie rod end. Brought it back to my shop to do inners and outers so find there was nothing wrong with them (no play, no ripped boots). Brought the old ones back in and to show there was nothing wrong and said they couldn't do anything about it except give me a discount on an alignment. Now the car has a pulls and they failed to give me the spec sheet....... Now i dropped off my 2003 Jeep grand cherokee for an alignment because i did tie rod ends. Dropped off at 9:30 AM because they said they were busy in the afternoon and it would be out fast if i dropped it off in the morning. I called back at 12:30 PM so get an ETA and it wasnt even in the shop. Finally at 2:30 PM it was done, asked if they road tested and they said its good. Could tell in the parking lot that the steering wheel was now off center. Car doesn't pull as bad but the steering wheel is off center. Never going back to this pep boys again. The only thing their consistent with is horrible service and poor repairs. Save your self the money and frustration and go somewhere else. read more

Went last month to get my state inspection. My car is relatively new and in good shape, so they called me within a couple hours to tell me it passed. On my way home I noticed my car was idling funny but didn't think anything of it. A few weeks later my check engine light went on, and I had guys at goodyear do a diagnostic inspection. It turns out when pep boys did the state inspection they left a bolt loose in the engine which caused dirt and air to enter. The whole thing cost me $250 for the diagnostic inspection and for the engine cleaning. Incompetence and shoddy workmanship from Pep Boys during the inspection they said most likely caused this. Ironic. Usually you get an inspection to make sure your vehicle is working properly. For anyone in the Exton area, GO TO GOODYEAR. If I could give my experience 0 stars I would. read more

Very rude employees, i was told it would take a short amount of time to replace ONE tire and i ended sitting in the waiting room for an hour and a half. It cost me $150 dollars to be treated poorly and for a dirty tire to be put on my car. They take advantage of their customers and i know for a fact that if i had been a man walking in to the store i would have been treated with more respect. Very unacceptable. I recently needed some brake repairs. I was EXTREMELY impressed with the service desk staff. Tylor was especially helpful during the entire process, as was the young man who was there when I arrived to pick up my car. The technician was also very kind and knowledgeable. I believe his name was Eric. At times, as a woman, I find that I am treated poorly by automotive service workers, but this was most definitely not the case at Pep Boys. The worst experience ever. They tried to remove my bumper change a headlight lamp. Are not experienced. They try to make up work that doesn't need to be done. I told them I was taking my car I went home and changed the lamp myself in 5min. I am young and Mechanically inclined I wrote this for people like my mom and dad older people that trust places like this and get ripped off. As for buying parts here, it's hit or miss if you get an associate who knows what they are talking about. But in regards to their maintenance department, do not deal with these people. We called to order tires and they told me that the tires I wanted were wrong for my car and that I needed to buy more expensive ones. I double checked and called back and stated that according to their own website the tires I wanted were correct for my car, he checked again and said yes but they had to order them in. They came in five days later as he said they would and I set up an appointment for the following day. I got there just before the appointment time dropped the key off and waited. It was an hour before they even pulled my car in, the guy driving my car clearly couldn't drive manual as he had a lot of trouble getting it in gear and I could hear him grinding it. He didn't make the turn into the garage on the first try and then proceeded to back out in front of a passing truck. Once it was in the garage he went back to working on another vehicle and the techs had to work around my car. Another half an hour or so went by and they finally got to my car. The techs found my new tires and threw them rather than carry them over to the tire changer, one tire actually rolled out of the shop into the parking lot and he had to chase it. Two and a half hours after I originally got there they were finally done working on it. I then overheard the manager telling one of the techs to save my old tires because they still had some tread left on them, but the fronts were nearly bald and one of the backs had a large gouge in the sidewall. read more

Been here three times for oil changes and have not been impressed. The first time my wait was an hour and half. The second time it was about an hour but they messed up my paperwork and thought that I had cancelled my appointment. Yesterday, I waited an hour and fifteen minutes before walking out because my car still had not been taken back. I make appointments every time. Why is the wait so long if they have me scheduled and know that I am waiting to have my car done? I'm done trying. Also, the employees are usually not too friendly.
