got new tires for my car. techs were friendly. so was the service advisor. after my service I was washing my wheels and found a 12" scratch on my driver front wheel from the mounting machine. looked at my side skirts and found scratches from the lift. I originally thought my driver side tires were backwards and was corrected on that when I came in to discuss the damages. however, the manager was coming up with every excuse as why his shop didn't cause the damages to my car. this is the first time new tires have been put on. the damages to my wheel are clearly from his shop and my side skirts have matching scratch marks on driver and passenger sides. not pleased with how this shop handles their mistakes. horrible experience from beginning to end. Walked in to two unwelcoming faces behind the counter. Got an oil change in my car, then my car had a stutter in the engine that wasn't there before service. Walked back into shop and they said they would look at it. they took it back and found nothing wrong. I asked the guy at front desk if he noticed the stutter, and he said yes, then I asked him if he noticed it when he pulled it in for the oil change, then he just decided to crack a mischievous smile and regurgitate a lie and said "yes". lol never again will I step foot into this circus and I recommend you do not either. if they mess up routine inspe and oil changes hard telling what could happen in more complex jobs. Update 2 hours after service: went to a Meineke down the road, and it was indeed a sloppy complimentary inspection. Cables and casings were loose which was causing a stutter in the engine. Boys at meineke cleaned up the mess for free. Will be going here for my next car appointment. read more

I needed two truck tires. Mine were bad. Although they try to upsell a lot, I'd done my calculations online. No, no unneeded alignment. No, don't need the road hazard warranty. Do please, apply all possible discounts. Took 45 min start to finish. Fine tires, good price. Will they last? Very likely. My tips: 1. Make sure you have the price correctly negotiated before you start. There are a lot of trainees here, and they can screw up-- they're new. Ask what will be done. Make sure that what they tell you is what you need before you proceed. 2. Do your research on their website, which is better than other tire stores and repair shops online. You can even go to the local library, ask to use Mitchell Online, and know exactly what they'll charge based on Mitchell's estimates, which are thorough and easy to make on the library's license of the software. Mitchell estimates a bit to the high-side, but any mechanic will tell you that stuff happens, and Mitchell gives them some leeway. Example: if you want an alternator changed, there are different steps for different vehicles; some will be more stubborn than others. This lists the labor steps needed to do the job correctly. Print it at the library and take it with you if you want. The Mitchell Online software isn't too tough to use, although the first time you use it, you'll scratch your head until you get used to it. Remember that the estimator also scratches their head in the same way. 3. Have realistic expectations. No one likes to pay the repair costs, just like few people like to pay preventative maintenance. Some people live one pay check to the next. Automobile safety isn't just for the owner or driver of the car, it's for all of us. Not trying to preach, but taking responsibility for one's actions is important. Tires, brakes, steering, all of these are safety items. When I took it to another mechanic, they told me that my car was fine and did not need to have that work done. I will never go back to pep boys! read more

My wife went in to get her tire looked at because it kept losing air. While there they told her that she needed to buy 2 tires even though one of these tires is brand new. I told my wife to leave. I took it to tire barn to get a new tire and they told me I didn't need a new tire just had a nail in the tire and they could patch it. Saved us $475! Went in for an oil change. Tried to inquire about the price prior to the oil change because I had a coupon. They said don't worry about it, we will take care of it afterwards. It was approximately $20 more than what it was supposed to be. When I got in my truck to leave, they had not done any of the courtesy check...tire pressure, tire rotation, etc. When I asked the manager about the service, he said, "Oh, he (the guy that did the oil change) did everything." Tire pressure was 10 lbs lower in 1 tire and there was no mention of needing new TPMS in the other tire. Pep boys service was terrible. Won't go back. read more

I used their (obviously flawed) website to select tires for my truck and create an appointment at the Bloomington, Indiana, store to have them put on. I pre-ordered the brand, style and specific size of tire. Pep Boys sent me an email CONFIRMING the tires and date/time of the appointment. When I arrived, I was told there were no tires in that size in stock! As a matter of fact, there were no other all-terrain tires in that size at all! The poor schmuck behind the counter told me they were special-order only and he could order them! That's what I thought I had already done! I made the appointment several days in advance. They should have had those tires there, ready for the appointment! I certainly will never shop at any Pep Boys and would warn anyone off dealing with such an incompetent organization. My Jeep Cherokee's "Check Engine" light came on a couple of days after Christmas. I went to the Jeep dealer and they refused to check it out. Their answer was we are too busy. I went to Pep Boys and one of the techs (Gary or Greg, I forgot), came out to the Jeep with the portable diagnostic reader. Two minutes later I found out it was my O2 Sensor bank and that the Jeep will run with the error. He said that when I was done travelling I should have it physically looked at. He did an awesome job. Please read in full.... Pep Boys is extremely convenient if you're in a bind to get work done quickly, especially on the weekend. That said, that was the highlight of my visit. Since all other service shops, except for Wal-Mart, are closed on Sundays. I would advise to pay attention to everything you pay for and make sure it is completed. Upon visiting the location in Bloomington, IN, a less than eager man behind the counter reluctantly took my information and entered an order for the Manager's Special (69.99 for synthetic oil change, tire rotation, brake check, fuel cleaner additive). After advising me that they are considerably behind and if I still wanted it then they would do it, I agreed as this was the only time I had available to get it done. About 40 minutes later, Keith P. calls and let's me know that I need an air filter also. Reluctant, I requested to see the air filter to make a decision. He completely understood and took me to my vehicle where there air filter sat and appeared to be in poor condition, so they replaced it for an additional 23.00. Then I asked Keith if I could to go ahead and pay for the services to help speed things up. He obliged, ringing up a ticket for 113.00. I asked why the difference in price and he said my vehicle takes 6 quarts instead of 5 of the synthetic oil and my filter is 6.00 instead of the 2.00 ones that come with the special. None of which was stated or disclosed on any of these signage. Keith P. was very cordial and did provide me a coupon for a free oil change on my next visit. Then they pulled my vehicle around. They did not complete the tire rotation... What else didn't they do? Did they use the right oil? Did they actually change the air filter? Did they put the fuel additive that I paid for in the vehicle? Did they do the brake inspection? All this I paid for, but now am unsure how much was completed correctly or at all... I advised Keith P. again of the issue and he apologized. He made a public display of reprimanding the workers for not reading the tickets. I guess, buyer beware... Keith was very nice about everything, but I just don't know what I got for my 113.00. Next time I'll be sticking to my trusted service station. read more

I've gone to Pep Boys since I have moved to Bloomington. Though I live very close to Meineke, my experiences in Franklin, IN and Columbus, IN have made making an appointment there abhorrent. I've only gotten an oil change each time, but they aren't pushy for me to get every single thing. They suggested the loyalty card, and mentioned my husband's alignment needs tweaked a bit, but when I explained I was not interested, they took it at face value and still kept a cheerful and friendly disposition. My only issue tends to be with the regular store staff being generally unfriendly, but at least they don't chase me down either. Overall, a pleasant experience! read more

My car started making an odd noise right before a cross-country move last year, so I brought it to Pep Boys to be evaluated. They told me I needed over $1600 worth of work done, which was shocking. When I pressed for specifics, it got even more shocking. They said that both my front struts AND my front shocks needed replaced. I don't know much about cars, but even I know I don't have both struts and shocks on my front wheels. I took my car to another shop, showed them the estimate Pep Boys printed off for me, and the guy there actually called the mechanics in from the back so they could all look and laugh at it. The actual cost of my repair ended up being less than $200, and it didn't involve shocks or struts at all. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

These people really are the worst. I'm a female and they tried every trick in the book to take advantage of me and pay more for auto repairs. Every question and need for my car was met with pushback on why I needed to spend more and replace this, this, and this. I was out of town and when when I told them how ridiculous all their suggested repairs were - I only needed a simple part that could be replaced that night - they basically shrugged their shoulders and told me I could have my car towed and leave. But they knew I was a captive audience because all the nearest auto shops were closed, and I needed to be back in the road that night. They saw my situation and took advantage, this was a horrible experience. The only way I could leave and get back on the toad was if I replaced and paid for all this other crap that had nothing to do with the issue at hand, nor were things that my car didn't even need. They kept saying they won't provide the main service until I agreed to fix the other things "because that's our policy." This was by far the worst auto repair experience I've ever had. read more

Went into the Pep Boys store on a Saturday morning. Was not acknowledged when I walked into the store, or did anyone offer to assist me. I was looking for items for my car, so I walked every aisle looking, and reading signs to see if I could find the items I wanted to purchase. I noticed that I was the only customer in the store at the time. I went to the front service desk to as the tech for the items that I wanted. He stated "if we have it, it's near the front of the store, and if you don't see it we don't have it" he then looked away continuing to read whatever he had before him. With frustration as I was leaving the store, I saw another service tech on his cell phone. I must say the name of the store does not represent the staff inside...indeed a lack of "pep". Had my car towed in because it wouldn't start. I was called a few hours later and told that they knew what the problem is but they didn't have the tools or part to fix it and that I would have to take it to the dealership. They also told me that it started for them. It still wouldn't start. I was charged $142 for them to tell me that they could NOT fix my car. Thats how much I would expect to pay if they actually FIXED my car. We complained to the manager and asked who his supervisor was and he said that he IS the supervisor. Horrible experience to say the least. Last time I ever use pep boys for parts OR service. Update: I was refunded my money after contacting customer service after posting this review. So these swindlers broke our car and are now trying to make us pay an additional 300 dollars to fix what they broke. We brought our car to them on Tuesday morning and they said it would be ready later that day. They called later in the day and said that it had been repaired and was running well. They then called again and told us that the car wouldn't start, a problem we have never ever ever had with the car not once, and one they openly admited had nothing to do with what we brought the car in for and that they probably triggered themselves. They have had our car since Tuesday morning and we have had to rent a car to get our son to daycare and ourselves to work. When we dropped it off they said we could pick it up that day. We really can't afford to keep extending our car rental and every time we call they have been very vague and won't tell us what is going on. We finally got a call from them this afternoon (Thursday) and they told us that they are going to charge us 300 dollars to fix whatever the problem was that they created. We obvioulsy had a problem with that and told them we aren't going to pay for their mistake. They said that they would have to call us back (for the millionth time) and we never heard back from them. We called them back after a few hours and they said that they couldn't talk to us and they would call us back....again. We had to call them back after a couple hours because they never called. They then had my wife almost in tears. They started to just flat out straight up lie to us over the phone. I spoke with the mechanic that first day and he told me, what was wrong with the car, how much it would cost, and that I could pick it up later that day. I spoke with him later and he said the car was running fine and we planned to pick it up after work. I spoke with them a third time and they said they must have triggered the theft security and that the car would start. I told them that our car has started, literally, every time and we have never had a problem with it. He said it was something they did and had nothing to do with what we brought the car in for and that they wanted us to drop off an extra set of keys. Which we did. Now they are changing there whole story and straight up lying not only about what is wrong with the car but about the timeline in which we spoke. SWINDLERS. LIERS. Do not bring your car to them. I needed two front tires, and wanted Consumer Reports' top pick. I called Pep Boys; they said they could get the tires in a few days; the price was reasonable. After reading Yelp reviews on this place, I was hesitant, but gave them a try as they are close to Starbucks, Lowe's, and a bookstore. I also signed up for a synthetic-oil change. When I took the car in, they had the tires; they called about a special keyed lug-nut my car apparently has on each wheel. I didn't have the key socket. They managed to remove the nuts, and got me two non-keyed replacement nuts. After they were done, I checked the tires, and the tire pressures (35 psi, both wheels). Checked the oil level--OK. Checked that the 'maintenance required' message on my dashboard had been cleared. Took the car for a high-speed spin to check wheel balancing--all good. No tire pressure error symbols. So what's to complain about? read more

I have gone to the Bloomington IN Pep boys for years and gotten satisfactory service until today. After leaving Bloomington, I have continued to use Pep Boys even though it was inconvenient due to the drive. I scheduled an oil change and signed up for text alerts. When I arrived, I was told that all of the techs had called in and they could not provide the service. The service desk person( Brandon or Keith) said they tried to contact me. But I had no voice mail, text messages or missed calls on either my cell or home phone. When I explained how I had driven in from out of town (over 40 miles round trip), I received an insincere "sorry" and a shrug. If I could give negative stars I would. The customer service and care in the auto repair area rates among the worst I have ever encountered. Scheduled an appointment, dropped off my vehicle BEFORE their business hours on the day of my appointment. At 11:30 I called for an update and was told that they hadn't even retrieved my keys from the drop box. When I told the "Service Manager" that I had an appointment and asked if my vehicle would be ready for me to pick tonight his response was "Doubtful." 1 star, they are more like a black hole of snake oil salesmen. We took our car in for a routine tune up. Change the oil, plugs and all that little needed stuff. They called to say our car was ready and before we even got out of the parking lot the check engine light came on. We took it back. Well, long story short they had our car for 3 days for a routine tune up and oil change. We went in 4 times to pick up a car that was supposedly fixed but wouldn't even make it out of the parking lot. Filed a complaint with their corporate office and got a service manager calling us that was nothing but rude. They reluctantly refunded $285 of the almost $600 they charged us on parts and such. Did I mention this was for a routine tune up and oil change? Today we took it into the Chrysler dealership for service and told them what had happen. Within 3 hours the service center called us to tell us Pepboys had put the wrong spark plugs in, damaged our coil and broke our oil dipstick, how is it even possible to break a dipstick? Also our alternator bearing were going bad. So that's another $800 to fix all the things Pepboys messed up. Really a dipstick? Pepboys refused to talk to the dealership or us. So we've filed complaints with the BBB and the state consumer board as well as on their fb page. DO NOT go to them unless you enjoy your car getting trashed, running like crap and having some slime bag try to sell you stuff you don't need. read more

Zero stars. These guys are super friendly during first contact. Then, their mismanagement and stupidity take over. I checked on my vehicle for four days, and they hadn't even touched it. Then, they said they checked the cooling system, and that I needed a radiator. I had it towed to the radiator shop. They determined the radiator was just fine. AVOID this place !!!! Two days ago, my mom called to make an appointment for two new tires and an alignment. Today we went in for said appointment, and we're told it would take 1-1.5 hrs, depending on the alignment. Okay. After two hours, my mom asked what was taking so long. The staff, who's name I believe was Keith, snapped at her, claiming that the alignment was really bad (aka blaming it on our car) and huffily telling her he could just stop them from aligning it. She said no, to finish, and he walked away. After almost another hour, the guy actually working on our car came put to talk to us. He said the system they use to do alignments was malfunctioning, and they had had problems with it the day before. This meant the guy earlier had lied to us when saying our car was at fault. He offered to keep trying but we said no. Then he tried to convince me to pay for the alignment, and come back another time to have them honor it. I of course refused. So after nearly three hours and my mom being snapped at, we had two tires and no alignment. I try to give the benefit of the doubt when receiving poor customer service. We all have bad days and I know it's not an easy job. But today was unacceptable. He should not have spoken to my mom that way and there was no reason to lie about the issue. This was my first and last time at any Pep Boys. read more

These people are completely incompetent. I took a vehicle there on 9/1/2012 with two primary issues. 1, Something wrong with the brakes, 2:, A/C Control panel (that they replaced less than 5 months earlier). We picked it up 9 DAYS latter, only to have the brakes still sticking to the point of almost causing a fire. A/C issue not addressed at all. Took it back - When I brought it back in one of the people there knew the brakes were still sticking, (oh well, not to important I guess). I then got charged $ 164.00 dollars more to fix the brakes, A/C issue still not corrected. In addition to that, when I picked it up, it was wet all over inside. I complained to corporate, got a vm from the manager, tried calling back numerous times, to no avail. DO NOT TAKE YOUR VEHICLE HERE, I GAVE THEM PLENTY OF TIME TO MAKE THIS RIGHT. read more

I gave this place a star because that's the only way I can write a review. They don't deserve even a negative star! I paid nearly $1,300 cash for wheels and rims back in March. Even got the warranty and road hazard. So, it's November and I get a nail in my tire. So I go in and they tell me it's gonna be $52 to get a new tire!!! I'm a single mom and I didn't have that kind of money at that time. They send me down the road (with my child, and they knew that) with a nail in my tire! And did not care! Thank God it was a type of nail that didn't deflate my tire, but still...it's the principle of it. After calling and having a fit with all the higher ups, they FINALLY agreed to change it for free like they said they would when I purchased the warranty. So, here I am 2 WEEKS LATER getting my new tire. And, by the way, I've been here 2 hours and my car still isn't in the garage!!! And, they are being so rude to me about it, too. I had new tires ordered and installed on my SUV two at a time. Didn't notice any issue with the first pair, however, after the second pair were installed on the front and an alignment done I noticed my truck was pulling a little to to the right at high speeds. After a few days it got worse. I decided to check the air pressure prior to driving all the way back to Pep Boys. Not only did I find that my front passenger-side tire was quite low (20 psi), when I checked the others I was shocked. The front drivers-side tire was a little high (39 psi) but my rear two tire were extremely high (66 and 72 psi). I thought my guage must be bad so I bought a new one and checked all four again. Same. I then inflated or deflated each tire as needed and set them to 35 psi each. I get that a tire may loose some pressure occasionally but this was ridiculous. read more

On Wednesday April 13, 2016, I stopped by Pep Boys in Bloomington to have my power steering fluid leak repaired. The technician said that a hose needed to be replaced. I agreed to that. After 3.5 hours of waiting and $150, the hose was replaced. Fluid still leaked for two more days. I went back on Friday April 15, 2016. I waited another 3.5 hours. A different technician said that there was no leaking even after I showed him the pictures on my iPhone. He said it must have been an oil leak. I left and drove my car to Winslow Marathon. In 30 minutes they diagnosed the leak as coming from the racking pinion steering. They ordered the new part replaced it the next morning and I was on my way. So, this leaves three options. Pep Boys could not properly diagnose my problem because they didn't know how to, or, Pep Boys knew what the problem was and did not want to deal with it (in which a case honesty would have worked for me.... just say we don't work or want to work on these type of issues...fine, i get that) or, most likely, Pep Boys saw me in my off-work-duty clothing and my 20 year old Honda and made a judgement call that I could not afford the $800 to $1000 bucks to repair it. Needless to say, Winslow Marathon has earned my trust and they got $800+ bucks. I wish I could leave them tip in a tip jar. DO NOT GO TO Pep Boys. Once upon a time they used to be excellent. My parents loved them for years but this location can't or will not do certain things so beware. read more
