This place has the BEST spices I have ever used. I also love that Penzey's in general is very anti MAGA. I love supporting businesses that support my people. I love the southwest and resist spices. The staff here is always helpful and friendly. read more

Very well organized : herbs, seasonings, baking. I needed vanilla extract since I ran out and they have way more sizes than most places. 2/4/8/16 Oz options are perfect for serial bakers lol It was raining off and on so day and I was offered to stay until the rain let up a bit, welcomed to the bench by the door. Friendly staff, and even though vanilla is expensive, reasonable pricing read more

I was in Carytown this weekend and a woman asked me where the Penzeys store was. After pointing her in the right direction, I decided to check it out myself. I'm not a great cook, but I do like using high quality spices with my food, and I was able to find quite a few good options. The woman who worked there was super helpful as well. If you're looking for spices, put this store on your list. read more

If you are a foodie that loves to cook you need to check out Penzeys!! Penzeys is a store full of spices. They have the store organized into little sections so it's easy to find what you're looking for. They have little jars of each seasoning that you can smell so you don't have to solely rely on the description of the product. Oddly enough my favorite seasoning is the Sandwich sprinkle. Ever since I've discovered sandwiches sprinkle it's been a staple in my kitchen and the most sought after ingredient of any sandwiches that I make! The employees are always super friendly and ready to chat about all things spice related! They also have a few spices deals going which makes gifting and trying new things easier to do. Check them out. read more

If your political tastes run a bit far to the right, this review could potentially cause a range of feelings from disappointment to rage. It won't matter to me -- I've already voted by absentee ballot, a nice straight down the ticket. When I was still watching the news, I saw a story about a spice company targeted after a visit from our vice president and current lighthouse for democracy. Yes, people in red hats were trying to sabotage this rather middle class sounding business that trades in pure vanilla and a hundred varieties of salt. Its owner, Bob, also happens to use the business platform to promote truth, freedom, democracy. I like those things almost as much as tacos. So I was thrilled to find out we have a Penzeys sitting on a corner in Carytown. I really did decide to visit because I planned to make tacos and needed some good seasoning. It is the kind of place that makes me slightly overstimulated. What do I look at first? Oh, they have bumper stickers! Wow, some vanilla costs almost as much as a car payment? (I kid.) The place is a home cook's fantasy and I loved it. Because I felt confused by abundance, I decided to buy a small gift box. They have so so many choices, but I opted for the January 6th box. The set includes a small (22 g) jar of the aforementioned justice, season salt, and outrage. These jars are adorable, relevant, and rage-inducing, the spices are fresh and taste good, and I felt vindicated buying from a brand putting its values right out there in people's faces. I also really liked the service. The person who helped me was super nice, assuring me that their mild taco seasoning was not spicy. When I explained that my 83 year old mom can't really tolerate much spiciness, she reassured me and gave me one of their "hug" coins to take home for mom. Really really great vibe. Highly recommend checking out Penzeys. I made the tacos and they were amazing! read more

My partner and I were going on a walk in Carytown and walked by this store. We decided to stop in to see what it was. ***LOCATION*** On the more west side of Carytown next to Crenshaw ave and close to Kroger. ***EXPERIENCE*** This shop has all your spice needs! We came in to explore and ended up leaving with a tiny bottle of turmeric that was on a great sale. I love the way this shop is set up. Any spice you can dream of is probably here. They had everything from dry rubs to baking spices to simple kitchen spices. Another great feature is there are tester jars by every spice so you can smell it before purchasing it. They also have amazing descriptions of the spices on these jars. Not sure how I missed this awesome spot in the past. ***PRICE*** Most of the smaller bottles started at $5. We got a small bottle of turmeric on sale for $1. ***CONCLUSION*** Instead of going to the grocery store next time I run out of paprika or turmeric, I'm gonna stop here! I'm also hoping to buy some more cocoa powder and vanilla extract from here when I'm out. read more

The single best place to stock up on spices. I love that Penzey's uses the same style bottle with varying sizes. This keeps my spice cabinet looking neat and well organized. With spices from Penzey's you will want to cook more and be more adventurous with cooking and eating new foods. The spices are fresh. You can taste and see the difference in color. Penzey's is consistent with their quality. We have been using Penzey's for over 15 years and we haven't been let down once. Thanks to Penzey's my family and I have tried dishes from cultures around the world that we had not heard of. Penzey's has such a wide variety of spices you can't go wrong shopping here for spices and herbs. This location is a quaint. Located in a historic part of town adds to the rustic appeal of Penzey's. Don't forget to ask about their specials. Happy Eating Yeeps!!! read more

My daughter gave me a delicious variety of Penney goodies for Christmas... Hot Chocolate mixes ( regular and mint) and a boxed set of a variety os spice mixes. I recalled reading about Penzeys Spices on Yelp when I walked by the shop en route to another spot on Cary Street. I had to circle back and ended up leaving with four different, high-quality spice blends. They definitely recommend masks here and are very focused on cleanliness, which is good. I asked if I could set my four spices down on the counter while I did one last perusal and was given a basket instead. There wasn't anyone else in the shop at the time, so I wasn't sure why I couldn't set them down, but that's fine. She then said she sanitizes all the baskets before putting them back out when I handed it back a couple of minutes later. The store is stocked with every type of spice you could possibly want. I've used two of my four spices so far -- the parsley and the lemon pepper, and I really enjoy both of them. I will definitely be back once I need to replenish them. Prices are reasonable but expect them to be a tad higher than the grocery store, of course. read more

I couldn't imagine a better company for spices and seasonings than Penzey's. The quality and quantity of their products are excellent without being terribly high-end. The staff are always friendly and knowledgeable and I've found this all to be exactly the same even when I've been in another location in another city. It really makes me think the owners and the culture of this company are something I want to support with my business and my money. For years and years I've been impressed with this company. They pivoted and adapted quickly during the pandemic and continued to serve their customers with no issues. My hats off to Penzey's Spices. *As if it needed to be said, there's nothing in common between any spice I get from Penzey's and what I might find at the grocery store or elsewhere. It's well worth my money to support such a high quality company. read more

This is destination shopping if you want high quality, moderately priced spices, herbs, and mixes. We find ourselves at the store once a month or so. The ingredients I need for my barbecue dry rubs are bought here, as is everything you could want in the kitchen. Thoughtfully sourced and a good variety. For instance, if you want cinnamon you can choose between Penzey's regular, Vietnamese, or Ceylon varieties. The store itself is spacious and smells heavenly. You may walk in tired and cranky, but you will quickly become intoxicated by the "aroma therapy" of all the spices in the air. Friendly staff, frequent email coupons and in-store specials. read more

I recently got their deal of a $50 gift card for $35 and got a lot of good stuff!! I got a various combo of full and sample size custom spice blends, salt, and almond extract. Their customer service was top notch, too read more

Everything! I blew in there 2 minutes before closing (I knew exactly what I wanted) and they could not have been more pleasant and helpful

Terrific spice selection with a lot of great mixes. Terrific service and even better politics. God bless Penzey's.

My go-to source for spices was Ellwood Thompson, but when COVID-19 shut down its bulk section (it's back up now), Penzeys was just blocks away. It's a small space that is not allowing customers in store, but it has an excellent contactless pickup system in place: order online at Penzeys.com, make an appointment, pick up order from crate in front of the store, easy peasy. Because I prefer to replenish smaller quantities of spices more frequently, I don't shop Penzeys as much as I might, but its products have never even remotely disappointed. Its peppercorns, saffron, and cardamoms are without peer, as is everything else I've ever used from here. Plus the staff is knowledgeable. Get on the mailing list for special promotions - the magnet, pin, and two jars of Revolution (a versatile peppery turmeric seasoning that adds crunch and zest) seasoning were free with a $10 purchase. I'll confess the design aesthetic is not for me, but the promotion was made to express solidarity with the racial-justice demonstrations for which RVA is a focal point. As another reviewer mentioned, the CEO isn't shy about sharing his political opinions. Whether or not you share them, Bill's newsletters are worth reading. read more

I ordered online after seeing the VP's visit on FB. I love to cook and bake so I'm always looking for good spices and extracts. So thankful I saw the FB post for a few reasons and placing my first order was one of them. I am very pleased with everything I purchased. I had my order shipped and received it quickly. Well packaged. I highly recommend Penzeys! Placing a second order tonight to include my donation of hug blankets. Great buying experience and heart warming. Thank you Bill! read more

For the price the quality of spices are not good. Was happy to try them but not worth it.

I was leaving Tipsy cupcakes Located just across the street from Penzys and me being a passionate cook, I'm always looking for new spices to try out in the kitchen with familiar and new recipes! This was the place for me! When I was walking in, there were many aromas in the air as you could imagine and I just followed my nose and some of the little signs located above the sections. I found a few things I had been wanting to try out. They take it a step further to give a brief description of the different spices and blends and their uses. It's a gem of a place! Looking forward to using my spices and returning to explore what other things I may be able to get my hands and my nose on next time! read more

I absolutely LOVE this place!!! I don't live near here but anytime I'm in the general vicinity of Richmond I just have to pop in! They have all of the spices and herbs that i love to cook with that are really hard to find. Everyone I've met who works here is so friendly and helpful, it's always fun to visit. read more

Best quality and best service. They are the only place to buy quality spices. I also appreciate a business that is socially conscious.

Penzeys spices are the best quality! They offer an amazing variety of spice blends as well as the kitchen essential basics. They are great on chicken, fish, meat and vegetables. I especially like Mural of Spice on oven roasted vegetables. The Fox Point seasoning is my go to for chicken and pork. Sprinkle it on, rub it in and roast. Just perfect! read more

Trustworthy- you know you are getting the best quality spices without additives! Service is always super friendly and helpful!!

I love this store!! Considering another 3 hour drive (round trip) to buy some items (they're THAT GOOD). I first found them while patronizing a nearby vet and, I'm now a believer in spice specialty shops. Their curry was fabulous in my chickpea salad and I want some holiday flavorings, pot roast flavorings and chili flavorings. I have an online order not yet placed, but I can't wait!!! read more

We love this store!!! I wish I was able to go in and smell it all... darn covid!! But, ordering pick up worked out so well! They were fast and efficient and were so polite. They have deal on their website, I highly recommend. Right now due to covid you can order online for curb side pick up. They will cal you when it is ready and then you call them when you are a few minutes from arriving. Then they place it in a box outside their door. We have always found their prices reasonable, and their spices fresh! They also stand by their product. Buying bulk is so much cheaper than buying a normal jar or McCormick read more

This is hard...I like the store itself and I like the spices. Most recently I was able to stock up on $2 hot chocolate mixes which are delicious. Unfortunately, along with my hot chocolate, the employee threw a bumper sticker in my bag that told me to "remember January 6." Umm I'm sorry but no matter what my politics are, I don't care for stores, restaurants, etc showing their partisanship. I mean, if you want to use your store to push your political views on people I guess that's your right but I likely won't be returning. read more

I used to pass this place by because I thought surely a spice specialty store in Carytown is bound to be expensive. Well, the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" exists for a reason, my friends. To me, it wasn't outrageously expensive at all! Most of the individual spices were as much or maybe slightly more expensive as you would find in the grocery store. When I walked in, I got a whiff of the most amazing, fresh spices. They're easily organized by spice type and I was able to navigate easily on my own. I came in looking for spices for a Christmas gift for a person in my life who has recently gotten into cooking. I loved that Penzeys had so many gift sets in the back of the store and I found the perfect one for a variety of meats. There's seriously something for everyone! If I cooked more, this place would be a staple in my shopping routine. Because I don't love cooking, I likely won't be making special trips to the area just to go to this store. I'm looking forward to popping in when I just so happen to be in Carytown, though! read more

You HAVE to stop in this store!!!! The 2 awesome people that were working on 10/8/22 could not have been nicer. Chatting with us, out of towners, as we looked through hundreds of spices, was so calming. After we checked out they gave us some free samples which is a great idea. I will definitely be buying online from them since we live over 330 plus miles away. You HAVE to stop at their store!!! read more

Mmmmm, seasons greetings... the aroma pleasantly smacks you in the face as you gingerly walk into this treasure trove of herbs and spices. Your olfactory senses will have a field day as you meander by the coriander. Take your thyme in each section, as the store is grouped by each spice or herb with multiple variations-I had no idea how many different paprikas there are! And so many salts... kosher, grey, pink, Himalayan... I bought the flaked salt. How'd you like to be a pepper? Well, pepper galore! I bought the Lemon Pepper which smelled heavenly! Even their everyday dried spices and herbs smelled fresh and pleasingly pungent. And that ain't no chive (which I purchased!) Adding to my basket, basil, dill weed, celery seed, garlic salt, turmeric, minced onion and more - until it was full! I can't wait to try the Sandwich Sprinkle seasoning I also crammed into my basket. At Penzeys, you can easily get caraway, I mean, carried away. In the back, there are loads of great gift boxes and ideas. I got the yellow box where you can make your own selections which came with nutmeg, cinnamon and bay leaves, plus recipes which I got as a gift for my newlywed daughter. I love the jars at each shelf so that you can smell the spices for yourself... ahhh, the cloves!! Don't miss the cloves! I found the prices to be comparable to name brands at grocery stores, but they definitely smell, look and taste fresher! Upon check out, DO give your email! No, not to curry favor, but to receive 2 free jars of spices! Then you will receive coupons etc. for even more savings which will have you cumin back thyme and thyme again. read more

Penzeys Spices - Specialty Food Near Me - Richmond, Virginia

Despite this place having quite a variety of spices, if you come here looking for something very specific, you probably won't find it. In that sense, while being able to come here is useful in terms of being able to actually smell the spices before purchase, shopping online is otherwise a preferable option. I came here with a friend, myself looking for Baharat and her looking for a specific kind of sea salt. The employees there were polite and helpful, though we quickly learned they had neither of our desired items. We perused the store anyway and were reasonably impressed; the selection of vanilla sugar was really nice, and if I ate breakfast more often, I definitely would have availed myself of a jar. The trouble with stores with such a specific bent as this one is that you go in expecting them to have EVERYTHING and of course their floorspace doesn't allow that. So, you approach it logically: if you can buy general spices from the grocery store and hard-to-find spices can only be had online, you get squeezed away from stores like this on both ends. Add to the equation the high prices that come with having to pay for a brick-and-mortar shop and you realize that this place is only really for locals who want to try something fancy and support local stores at the same time. If you fall into that category, this place is for you. If not, well... Check online instead. Overall: 3.0 stars ---------------- Pros: - Store has an attractive layout, and all the spices are all available for smelling. - Employees are polite and helpful. - Some unique offerings will impress you. Cons: - Since many spices are far cheaper at the grocery store and many hard-to-find ones simply aren't here, you may leave empty-handed or having paid too much. This option is for locals and internetphobics only. read more

There is something about Penzeys Spices which I enjoy going into. I think it is the fragrance of all the spices which makes you hungry. I am a TRUE lover of spices in my food and this is a great place to spend an hour. I go from spice to spice and testing many in how they taste. They have a sample jar there which you can pour a little in the palm of your hand, I it gives you an idea of what it taste like. In addition, it is worth signing up to get their magazine as it has many wonderful recipes, including a Free Offer on a new spice coming into the store.... Also, a lot of good background on the spices they have and where they come from and how to use them.... If you have not been, this is a great place to go. The people in there are extremely wonderful and they are willing to help if you need them. I do not go often as I am not in that part of town often, but when I do.... I seem to walk out with a bag full of spices. They have their spices in varies sizes. I try to buy the bigger size since I cook with a lot of spices because you get more "Bang for your Buck" when you do. I uploaded several photos of just a very small portion of this place.... Great place and a great place to visit. They have specials for gifts as well.... Who does not enjoy good Spices.... Make it a visit..... read more

The best smelling store in town for sure! They have spices from around the world and there are sample jars everywhere so you can take a sniff. While gourmet cooks are familiar with all of these sophisticated spices, those of us who are novice cooks love the free recipes and the signs that explain what each spice is, how hot it is, what you can use it for, etc. You can also get a free catalog that has recipes and coupons and the staff is really friendly and helpful, if you have questions. read more

I have been in here multiple times over the years but have never bought anything until recently. The main reason why I have never bought anything was due to the price point of some of spices and seasonings and it didn't justify my purchase since I was cooking that much. I have been cooking a lot more since last summer and needed some new spices to help elevate some of my cooking. I came in here looking for salt based spices and asked one of the workers there where they were and got very helpful information. I wish I knew her name, but the employee was extremely nice and knowledgeable of the store and all the spices she showed me; she recommended what spices to use with what protein and even described how they tasted. I walked away with a jar of 4s spice and Garlic salt which I highly recommend and have been using on a weekly basis. The only thing I wished this store offered was samples of each spice/seasoning.. but maybe that isn't possible? They have everything from gumbo seasoning to celery salt, and vanilla extract and curry powder and many more. Come here for an awesome spice experience! read more
