If you are a foodie that loves to cook you need to check out Penzeys!! Penzeys is a store full of spices. They have the store organized into little sections so it's easy to find what you're looking for. They have little jars of each seasoning that you can smell so you don't have to solely rely on the description of the product. Oddly enough my favorite seasoning is the Sandwich sprinkle. Ever since I've discovered sandwiches sprinkle it's been a staple in my kitchen and the most sought after ingredient of any sandwiches that I make! The employees are always super friendly and ready to chat about all things spice related! They also have a few spices deals going which makes gifting and trying new things easier to do. Check them out.

If your political tastes run a bit far to the right, this review could potentially cause a range of feelings from disappointment to rage. It won't matter to me -- I've already voted by absentee ballot, a nice straight down the ticket. When I was still watching the news, I saw a story about a spice company targeted after a visit from our vice president and current lighthouse for democracy. Yes, people in red hats were trying to sabotage this rather middle class sounding business that trades in pure vanilla and a hundred varieties of salt. Its owner, Bob, also happens to use the business platform to promote truth, freedom, democracy. I like those things almost as much as tacos. So I was thrilled to find out we have a Penzeys sitting on a corner in Carytown. I really did decide to visit because I planned to make tacos and needed some good seasoning. It is the kind of place that makes me slightly overstimulated. What do I look at first? Oh, they have bumper stickers! Wow, some vanilla costs almost as much as a car payment? (I kid.) The place is a home cook's fantasy and I loved it. Because I felt confused by abundance, I decided to buy a small gift box. They have so so many choices, but I opted for the January 6th box. The set includes a small (22 g) jar of the aforementioned justice, season salt, and outrage. These jars are adorable, relevant, and rage-inducing, the spices are fresh and taste good, and I felt vindicated buying from a brand putting its values right out there in people's faces. I also really liked the service. The person who helped me was super nice, assuring me that their mild taco seasoning was not spicy. When I explained that my 83 year old mom can't really tolerate much spiciness, she reassured me and gave me one of their "hug" coins to take home for mom. Really really great vibe. Highly recommend checking out Penzeys. I made the tacos and they were amazing!

Found a spicy little store today hidden in plain site!!! The service was awesome. The aroma when you hit the door makes you want to find that exact spice. I will be back!!!

My partner and I were going on a walk in Carytown and walked by this store. We decided to stop in to see what it was. ***LOCATION*** On the more west side of Carytown next to Crenshaw ave and close to Kroger. ***EXPERIENCE*** This shop has all your spice needs! We came in to explore and ended up leaving with a tiny bottle of turmeric that was on a great sale. I love the way this shop is set up. Any spice you can dream of is probably here. They had everything from dry rubs to baking spices to simple kitchen spices. Another great feature is there are tester jars by every spice so you can smell it before purchasing it. They also have amazing descriptions of the spices on these jars. Not sure how I missed this awesome spot in the past. ***PRICE*** Most of the smaller bottles started at $5. We got a small bottle of turmeric on sale for $1. ***CONCLUSION*** Instead of going to the grocery store next time I run out of paprika or turmeric, I'm gonna stop here! I'm also hoping to buy some more cocoa powder and vanilla extract from here when I'm out.

Store front. If you blink you may miss it.

The single best place to stock up on spices. I love that Penzey's uses the same style bottle with varying sizes. This keeps my spice cabinet looking neat and well organized. With spices from Penzey's you will want to cook more and be more adventurous with cooking and eating new foods. The spices are fresh. You can taste and see the difference in color. Penzey's is consistent with their quality. We have been using Penzey's for over 15 years and we haven't been let down once. Thanks to Penzey's my family and I have tried dishes from cultures around the world that we had not heard of. Penzey's has such a wide variety of spices you can't go wrong shopping here for spices and herbs. This location is a quaint. Located in a historic part of town adds to the rustic appeal of Penzey's. Don't forget to ask about their specials. Happy Eating Yeeps!!!

What to get: A Prosciutto sandwich with Fresh Mozzarella added, maybe What else: Expect an upcharge to add Fresh Mozz How to improve: Don't upcharge so much for Fresh Mozz (sigh) Nick's is a little run-down grocery store which sort-of feels like walking into a check-cashing shop or an urban convenience store that just happens to have a wonderful old-school NY-NJ style Italian deli inside. The deli itself is great, and makes a lot of awesome sandwiches for decent prices. As I said, I don't like the weird upcharges for certain ingredients, but so be it. It makes the prices of a sandwich soar from decent to ridiculous. The sandwiches aren't altogether authentic Italian NY-NJ style, but they are very good. I loved the parts of it that I had fresh, however when I had the rest of the sandwich a little later it had gotten extremely squidgy and soggy because they use a regular loaf of bread rather than anythng hard or Italian. Again, makes it less authentic but still very tasty. Despite these remarks, I haven't had a sandwich this good in the Richmond area before, so you should give it a try. And if it were Niche Produce, then they'd only sell unusual and hard to get hipster vegetables and sandwiches. Whereas if it wer Nix Produce, it would close down soon. And if it were Knickers Produce then I would have torn them down a lot more quickly and intensely than I did in this review.

In short, it was a nice place for lots of unique or convenient goods. Unfortunately, I'll be crossing Shield's Market off the list, as they will not return products that were opened before being sold, decline to stand by their own policies concerning refunds, and steal from customers by accepting return of a products with the promise of an upcoming refund and then refusing to issue a refund. The short version of how I found this out started when I purchased of a bottle of vermouth and was not offered a receipt. The manager told me on a phone call that the store policy is to accept returns without a receipt for defective products returned within 24 hours of purchase, which should have meant that a receipt was not necessary. But the same manager nonetheless refused to refund my money even though they did take the product back. The longer version involves two additional trips to the store after the initial trip when I purchased the bottle (totaling three visits in as many days), assurance by the store's cashiers that a manager would be able to issue a refund (which is why I made the second additional trip during a time when a manager would be present), the store taking the bottle back on the promise that a refund would be issued (apparently I had bought the last bottle, otherwise I would have simply exchanged it), and then a stunning phone call from the manager (who had been too tied up with phone calls to speak to me when I visited the store while she was there). That phone call was stunning because the manager both advised me of the policy of issuing refunds (even without receipt) when a defective item is returned within 24 hours, yet then (when I reminded her that I had, in fact, attempted to return the product within 24 hours) refused to act on that very policy. It's worth noting that it was abundantly clear that the product's damage--what appeared to be a clean cut around 90% or so of the seal, so not exactly something one immediately notices when just trying to make a quick purchase--had occurred before I purchased it. No one else had touched the bottle after I purchased it and it hadn't been jostled or exposed to any unusual environmental elements. My credit card company recently completed its investigation of this matter and found in my favor, refunding the payment. Shield's Market apparently did not dispute the information I provided to the credit card company, despite a lengthy window in which it could have done so. Normally, if the return policy of a business seems irrational or simply customer-adverse, I would mention that in a review and, if it's a particularly obnoxious policy, would dock a star or two. However, that is not the case here. Shield's does have a reasonable return policy in theory, the problem is bigger--they simply refuse to abide by their own, stated policy. I can therefore only conclude that it is not a reputable nor even ethical business and have rated it accordingly. I recommend avoiding this business.
