I absolutely love this little shop. The staff is super helpful and kind. The spices are very high quality, fresh, and make such a difference vs grocery store stuff. I can't get enough of their freeze dried chives. I enjoy buying their salt free blends. My favorites are Mural of Flavor, 33rd & Galena, and Arizona Dreaming. Their cinnamon is exceptional. You can smell everything they offer, and they will give you samples. They have truly amazing sales, and their emails are filled with light activism and good vibes. A real hidden gem on the Post Road. I often forget about this place but recommend it very highly. My new Vitamix calls for all sorts of crazy spices and I didn't feel like buying big jars of stuff I may never use again at Whole Foods. The spices are varied and fresh and you can buy small containers for very fair prices. It's as if you have walked onto an South Seas sailing vessel with exotic spices traveling to Europe and the New World. They also have a nice baking section and some interesting salt combinations I have not seen anywhere before - one with hot spices is truly delicious. As another reviewer said - it feels like walking onto a spice vessel of yore coming from the East Indies....the smell in the store is divine!! In the pre-COVID days I would just walk in and spend a few minutes just breathing in the smell.....the best spice combinations, the friendliest and elegant staff members... I cook a lot and their range and quality have definitely added to our cooking creativity! My daughter who lives in Denmark always stocks up at the Norwalk store before flying back! My Penzeys closed here in Jersey so now we road trip to CT- and hit Stew Leonards while we are at it--- cuz they are across the street from each other- I love the spice smell when we walk in they always have new stuff- and yes they ship spices but I enjoy going in and spending time there without any rush. My favorites are always in stock and the chili pods can be expensive for the small bags they are in - so I will still order mine from New Mexico-- but all in all the prices are prety good and any cheff will tell you good spices and seasoning fresh or dry -- do make a huge difference when cooking.. read more

First, I need to mention that I am a HUGE Penzeys fan! I have been a loyal mail order customer of theirs for years. Sadly, there is no brick and mortar Penzeys anywhere near my home in Portland, Maine. I was taking the drive from Portland to NYC to visit my 2 older children and decided that, since I love Penzeys SO much, to take a detour and make a stop in their shop in Norwalk Connecticut. I found the shop without much difficulty and parked right on the side. I walked in filled with happiness and enthusiasm and was greeted upon entering with "Hi, welcome to Penzeys". I then walked over to the seemingly nice woman behind the counter and said "I am SUPER happy to be here, i've been a customer for years and have ALWAYS wanted to walk through an actual store", to which the woman kind of shrugged and turned back to her paperwork. Feeling kind of deflated, I grabbed a basket and went through the store reading through each and every descriptor and not letting the low energy rain on my Penzeys parade! Ultimately, I did have a one-woman great time. On the other hand, I would reccommend an injection of enthusiasm in the staff considering they are selling such a GREAT product!!! read more

Love, love LOVE this Spicy joint! A little dash here weekly will bring your cooking to new levels! They offer every spice and combination of and the quality is exceptional. Some faves include Northwood, fabulous on salmon; Sunny in Paris excellent on eggs and chicken ... their barbere and bicentennial rubs are perfect enhancers to a prime rib or tomahawk. They have weekly specials where one can purchase special jars at 80% off. If you sign up fo emails, you get all the specials but you will also get a political point of view. Some tend to avoid this place because of that but this great country gives us freedom of speech, and the same way that you can choose you want to see in office is the same way you can choose where to shop but if you avoid this place because of their political stance, the only person who will lose is you! Any spice/herb that you can think of is here. Different sizes are offered as well as bulk bags. They also sell empty spoon able jars as well as shaker jars. Penzey's is a recent discovery of mine, and I don't know how I survived without her. They have a selection of spices that would rival any spice market in the middle east (ok, I admit, a friend was just in Egypt not too long ago and came back with more fresh spices than I ever imagined (I purloined a few vanilla beans) and I just want to have some ammo to fight back at him with in Penzey's). If you have a chance to visit the store, all of the spices are available for you to smell and understand what it is that you have been missing. Though, if driving to Norwalk, CT (or wherever else you find a store... www.penzeys.com), you can always use their mail order business, which is efficient and amazingly useful. As to price... I find them to be amazingly reasonable, especially when I consider that otherwise I would be going to the supermarket and picking up some McCormick's spice that has been in a jar for the better part of the last decade and has about all of the flavor of sawdust. Order and/or buy your spices in bulk, keep what you aren't using in the freezer... and you will have fresh spices on hand perpetually. Also, though I feel silly saying this on a foodie website... Penzeys Spices will make any cook a better cook! Their spices are without equal --the freshest of the fresh. Their spice mixtures are unusual and delicious! I like the chili con carne spice--chili with notes of tomato, cinnamon and cloves, but very little heat. Loads of different cinnamons and the best hot cocoa mix. read more

The spice selection here is huge! However, you definitely need a 3 figure salary to be shopping here. 3lbs of salt costs nearly 5$ for regular crystal which you can find at any supermarket for about 2.99$. Also, their prices on common spices are through the roof! You are better off going to your local indian or chinese grocer and getting the spices there. Get them in bulk and mix your own! What really made me angry at this store is that they had a Peri-Peri pepper powder which used cayenne peppers and not peri-peri peppers. That is preposterous! Anyone from South Africa would be very unhappy seeing this.
