Came in to this location with my 2y Son, my wife and my father in law to spend a gift card we got a while back. My son needed to use the potty, and My wife asked one of the sales associates (older lady with short white hair) if they had a restroom our son could use. She replied very sharply and with attitude "we do in the back but someone has to go with him he cannot go alone" obviously my 2 year old wasn't going to go alone. After my wife exited the bathroom she quickly ran in there to check it out. It was so bizarre. She kept giving us such side eye the entire time we were in there. My son was walking around with my wife and he barely touched a wet sign that was in the middle of the store, and again, she said quickly and with attitude "can you leave the sign alone we've had an incident there" there was nothing there. we used up our gift card and quickly got out of there. She clearly didn't want us in there, which is crazy because we were the only ones in there. She's definitely the reason people aren't coming in to that store. Just visited to pick up some spices. Many of the spices were close to expiring without a sale or discount and the sales clerk said they didn't have anything with a longer expiration date. The sales clerk was also very short and rude. Seems a bit ridiculous when you're paying top dollar for fancy spices but they are expiring..... read more

the spices are wonderful. overpriced? yes. quality? yes! the low rating is for their customer service and strong company views. we've reached a point where we cannot purchase from penzeys anymore in good conscience. The political agenda is so strong and harmful. The promotions are almost always centered around bashing the Republican Party. I dont have strong political views, but it's clear that theirs can be very hurtful. There's literally a tab on their website titled "about republicans" and though several places they say it's not about hate but the Message inevitably comes across that way. Ouch guys. there are ways to positively address passions and views in a respectful way without pointing fingers. You can stimulate critical thinking without slandering. That's the best gift of all, to be given the right to think critically and make decisions based on your personal views. We cannot support penzeys close mindedness and harmful views anymore and we will purchase from other companies. Store and service - living in Denver, we would visit the Littleton store often and nearly always interacted with grumpy cashiers. sometimes I was left with feelings of shame for asking questions or once trying to use the bathroom. maybe it's the kind of person they hope to employ but for us we prefer a cheerful, engaging customer service experience found elsewhere. change ownership, change your name, and change your attitudes and we'd love to come back. read more

Fantastic store with great products and helpful people. Great place to get gifts that you know will be appreciated and used by the recipients. So tough to buy for certain people, but who doesn't like great dips, rubs or blends for taking that dish to the next level?? Reasonable prices for neat gifts!! This Penzeys location is a big, beautiful, new looking store. As I walked in after noon on Friday, 7/22/16, I was immediately greeted by store manager Owen. I peppered him with questions about Penzeys' products and he answered them patiently, graciously and then shared some knowledge about seasonings for BBQ/Smoking (my forte) that were new to me. He also showed me two different, personal books of his that included discussion and directions for what we were talking about. Owen obviously believes in and loves Penzey. He is an impressive "face" for the company as well as a tremendous asset. This was my first visit to a Penzeys store; I've been wanting to go inside one or another store for many years. On this visit, I was curious if Penzys carried BBQ rubs, in quantity; i.e., large jars of at least 8 oz. or more. To my surprise, they don't! When I shared my disappointment with Owen, he showed me and had me smell a "salt" product by the name of 4/S Special Seasoned Sea Salt; a mixture of coarse sea salt and sugar (the base) and black pepper, paprika, onion, garlic and a bunch of other spices. I haven't tried it yet, but it smells GREAT and I will try using it the next time I smoke spare ribs. read more

Have you ever shopped for spices in Marrakesh? Okay, shopping at Penzey's is as adventurous but some of the smells are the same. Are you looking for Justice? It's in the seasoned salt section. Goes great on asparagus. Not in anyway like other boutique bourgeois spice shops. I love this place. But shopping here does make me feel a little guilty. My mother was Japanese, my father from Sri Lanka. Growing up in an Asian immigrant family in 1960s America meant trying to adapt groceries from the local A&P (the fresh produce was iceberg lettuce, Idaho potatoes, hard red tasteless tomatoes, yellow onions, carrots and celery) and stale, old spices mailed from relatives to imitate traditional meals. We never did figure out what to do with Uncle Ben's racist perverted rice but we did like the fiber-free Wonder Bread. When the end of the Vietnam War brought America a new wave of Southeast Asian immigration and then the digital technology developments of the 1990s coupled with information age outsourcing resulted in a new wave of South Asian immigration the turn of this century ushered in a welcome shopping experience for us. The Asian Grocery Store. Life became so much better. So, so much better. And those of us who came here by way of Asian countries like Thailand, Laos, Pakistan, India or Canada quickly learned that the only place to buy spices are Asian grocery stores. Frank Zappa once asked "...is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?" ("Cosmik Debris," a reference to "Camarillo Brillo." Please ignore if you're under 55 years old I'm just working on a metaphor here). Well we might wonder if that's real chili powder or is that Kroger chili powder? Yes, you can sometimes get fenugreek from Whole Foods but not without a preposterous White know-it-all attitude and you sure don't want to ask anyone there where the Aji-no-moto is because they will give you some serious ethnocentric judgement. Asian grocery stores would never give the whole range of spices used on the continent, being specific to a subcontinental region, but they are also places to catch up on community news and gossip. And THE freshest ethnic-specific spices until....Penzey's. The variety of fresh spices found in a combination of Far East, Southeast and South Asian grocery stores with fair pricing. Add the full range of European herbs and spices. Knowledgeable staff without ethnocentrism or pretension, combining the best combination of competence with friendly customer service. The only problem with this location is that to get here you need to survive a scary suburban roundabout that in some ways reminds me of driving into the aforementioned Marrakesh. read more

One of the joys of visiting Wisconsin is shopping at Penzeys Spices. We were making a meal for our hosts and stopped by the Delafield branch of this wonderful spice emporium. We needed Justice in our main dish as well as our lives and as always Penzeys came through. The manager was polite and engaging while directing us to the proper shelf where the Justice blend stood. I find this salt free mix to be the perfect seasoning for many dishes from roast chicken, to zucchini, to sautéed mushrooms. We couldn't leave with just one item so we grabbed some more staples for our kitchen and left with smiles on our faces as the wonderful cashier added a free jar of a new spice blend to our bag. There were bugs in my spice. I notified via FB and never heard back. I would add the photo but it is disgusting. Sometimes things happen but something like that will make me not go back. I buy a lot of spices and have never found a bug in anything from modest to high-end products ever. Not for me! Do not recommend. read more

My wife sent me out for some multi-colored peppercorns for our Christmas dinner with family. Not knowing better I purchased a jar of peppercorns for $45. I could have bought the same jar for half the price at the local competitor. 1/4 the price online. I will never set foot in Penzy again. read more

I have bought from Penzeys for years and have never received anything except high quality product. The person who said that they found bugs should have taken it immediately back. I am suspicious of someone who complains and doesn't do anything about it at the time. Perhaps they are just trying to discredit Penzeys. read more

I love it when my computer decides to erase the extensive review that I've written about a particular business just before I post it. Since I feel that I've already completed a review for Penzeys, I am basically just going to say that it is fricking awesome. You would think that it would be some kind of douchey expensive spice place, but it's not. Go get some double strength vanilla extract (with actuall alcohol in it), and you'll never go anywhere else for your spice needs. There are tons of locations all over the area so you don't have to go far. So just go already! read more
