I found Penzeys when I lived in Madison 45 years ago and have never looked back! I was very excited to find a store about 5 minutes from my house in Brookfield when I moved here 10 years ago. The assortment of spices is amazing & the folks that work there all seem to be cooks, which I love because if you open the door a crack you can pull some great information from them! The store is always spotless, well attended and shelves full. I also love the kids artwork that is displayed at different times! The only thing I wish is BP would keep his political views to himself. My parents taught me to never talk politics or religion to anyone unless they were close friends and we agreed. I am 80 yrs. young & my best friend loves Penseys spices but I can guarentee she would never buy a spice from Penseys again if she knew his political views. That would make me sad! read more

The spices absolutely top tier. The politically drama not worth the top quality spices. It all comes down to this YES the business owner has a right to what they believe. BUT the consumer has a right to buy a product WITHOUT political drama!!!! The product is good but it is NOT worth having political opinions shoved down customers throats as the product has political claims on the back. YES I chose to go to the business for spices however I will NOT be back. The wonderful thing about being a consumer is I have choices and there is not a single business that is one of a kind. I can certainly buy spices that are just as good, even better without the drama. Not worth the drama read more

Great store that is very clean and well laid out. The staff are always friendly and greeting you when you walk in. I also don't know a time when I've not had a staff person ask if I need anything. They have a great selection of spices and seasonings, including many of their blends. I've really liked the Ruth Ann seasoning and Fox Point. They offer a lot of great deals and coupons via email. It can be pricier but the quality is worth it and you can usually save with their promotions. read more

I really enjoy that they have so many easy to access stores in the Milwaukee metro area. Stopped in to pick up some spices for a new recipe. Great service. Checkout was quick and easy with free magnets. The store was bright, clean and nicely organized. read more

Spices: High quality, fresh, pricy but worth the slightly extra price. Staff: Friendly, helpful, generous with samples and promos. Store: Comfortable, well-lit, easy to navigate. Company: Horribly divisive and hateful rhetoric, nearly incessant political rambling villainizing over half the country for not seeing eye to eye with the owner. If you make the mistake of signing up for emails (coupons), you will get nonstop emails filled with hate and vitriol from the owner of the company himself about how terrible everyone is and how the world is about two minutes away from imploding. This is so exhausting when I just want some vanilla for baking or some white pepper. Come on.. read more

I absolutely love Penzey's spices! I love the high quality ingredients that they use and only buy my spices from them. It is a little pricier than the store bought spices but it's worth it. For example, I only buy Ceylon cinnamon as it has the least amount of coumarin (a contaminant) and Penzey's is the only place I can find it so I buy it in the bulk bags. You can buy the spices in the small, medium or large jar or the bulk bag. I usually start with the jar and if I like it, I continue buying the bulk bag. There's always tons of sales and free giveaways too which gets me trying new spices. I also really like their spice mixes and they have these cute fanciful names. I was able to check out this store when traveling and the staff is always super friendly and helpful when choosing spices. The store is a little remote but there is plenty of parking. The inside kind of reminds me of a bookstore where the spices are displayed by category. Check out this store for yourself or to buy gifts for others! read more

Beautiful store with superb selection of spices! Excellent customer service in an inviting environment.

So, my wife and I were out and about on vacation a couple weeks ago. While out doing some shopping, we came across this spice place, and decided to check it out. She picked a few spices she wanted to give a try. So, since home she has tried them, and really basic. Just over priced spices you could do better at Walmart. Very disappointing. The staff seemed nice enough, but not worth the trip, or money for basic goods. read more

Always purchased my spices from Penzeys in the past. Recently noticed that the quality has gone downhill and the products are no better than the brands sold at Walmart. I have decided to purchase my spices at other places and save an awful lot of my hard earned money. read more

The pepper is absolute garbage. It literally made my food taste so bad I couldn't even eat my steak. If you want bad pepper get it here. They should literally just throw it in the garage. read more

I've been using their spices for a few years. I love their spices. Revolution is my favorite. The gift card is a perfect home-warming gift. Or something a little extra for newlyweds setting up house. Give them a try. read more

Ordered their popcorn seasonings and more. Products came fast, accurate and loved the salt free seasonings.

Penzeys produces some of the best spices around. I live that you can buy them in a variety of sizes based on what you need. Their stores are set up in a very organized and visually pleasing way. And, the sales people are very knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. read more

I've used Penzeys for 20 some years now, recommended by my sister in law. They always have great coupons too.

This place has the best and freshest spices that I've found. The staff is so helpful, offering recipe cards for the spices I bought. Really great choices for pepper. I bought several of their gift boxes that were on sale as they make the best gifts for those people who have everything! read more

Best spice store ever! Wonderful selection at good prices! I don't have a store in my town, but I order as often as I can. Thank you, Bill, for telling it like it is! read more

I first purchased Penzeys Spices a few years ago on a trip to Pittsburg. They are excellent and perfect quality spices! They offer many that are hard to find. I highly recommend them to anyone. There is a great selection and the prices are competitive with lesser-quality brands. I wish there was a retail location near me but I order many of their spices online. A fabulous company! read more

wonderful palce for spices. i wouldnt think of going any other provider. the sales staff know the products and the product line in huge.

What a horribly rude and thoughtless crew that work here. If you enjoy salt with a little salt, then you might find happiness here, but overpriced garbage with workers who have serious attitudes is not my kind of place. Stay far away. read more

Love this store. Seriously love it. Ordering from a catalog is okay, but there's nothing like getting something in a store and walking out with it right away. There's a tactile experience involved, I think. And, the stores smell incredible. Everything is organized by whether it's an herb, spice, or seasoning and there are cards nearby that explain the types of cuisines in which it's most often used. For anyone hesitant to spend a lot of money on something they aren't sure they'll use a lot, Penzey's stores, like the catalog, offers various sizes. I had no idea there were different types of some things, like vanilla beans or cinnamon. That was fun to learn. Some items are in small jars, others are in large plastic bags; some are whole seed, others are ground. There are gift-boxes available for others or if you want to splurge on something for yourself. Penzey's very cleverly places recipe cards throughout the store, but there's a real wealth of knowledge amongst the staff. Throw a question at them about a spice or seasoning, and they'll answer it. I picked up some spices I've been wanting to try, but instead gave them as a gift to a friend in exchange for a promise to bring me a sample of whatever she makes using them. The Mahlab, in particular, was intriguing and as I was checking out, the employee asked if I would let her know what I would use it for as they were always looking for new ideas. That's another nice thing about getting to visit a store and not shopping from a catalog -- real-time interaction. read more

You pay more for products at Penzey's but I think I'm getting fresher, better tasting spices. I pretty much use items from Penzey's and the Spice House now and I think what I make turns out better. I appreciate that you can buy plastic refill bags of items so you can reuse your glass jars. Staff is really helpful with suggestions too. If you buy regularly, definitely sign up for their email list. They regularly send offers for free items - just recently I got a small jar of garlic powder with my purchase. read more

So this is what fresh spices taste like. Amazing!! Really love the fact that I can use most any of them as there are NO PRESERVATIVES that would send me to the hospital. The soup bases are amazing and I had no idea there were so many types of a single spice- like cinnamon. Who knew? Apparently these guys do! Just wish I had more time to cook every day so I could try out ALL the fantastic spices & blends. Even had to make a dedicated spice drawer in the kitchen. read more

Well not sure where to start. Overpriced with bad customer service isn't a good combo. The gentleman working the register made some odd comments to my 12 year old daughter that I thought was inappropriate. I switched all my spices to Penzeys several years ago and I feel that my dishes and baked items taste so much better. I like browsing the different spices and it's nice they have jars that you can smell. The staff is always helpful and can make recommendations on which item to choose based upon what you like and are cooking. I was in a couple of weeks ago looking for curry powder and must have had the deer in the headlight look on my face when trying to figure out which powder to get; who knew there were so many different variations on curry powder. They helped me out and I ended up getting the sweet curry which worked well for the dish I was making. I get all my baking supplies at Penzeys. Love their cinnamon, vanilla and cocoa powder. They have gift boxes that are already made up or you can make your own. These make the best gifts that are always appreciated. read more

Very nice store, clean and I order. But........... A total rip off. Total. I bought a package os sesame seeds and was charged $9.00 and change. Quantity 2/3 of a pound. I happened to shop at Glorioso's the following day and bought a little more than 3/4 of a pound for ( are you ready), $3.31. I am sure that Penzey over charges for all their spices. I will not return to the thief. Also, he is a self righteous liberal. His politics are foolish and have nothing to do with his over priced spices. read more

Have been getting the majority of my spices here for years and considering my passion for cooking and the fact I have a few homes to stock, I have probably contributed quite heftily to a Penzey child's education! The quality of everything within their store's is exceptional and the staff has always been friendly (is it because I spend $150 + every time???) On my most recent visit, I have noticed packaging has become smaller and ALL prices have skyrocketed!!! I will continue shopping at Penzeys, however I do believe several products are completely over and mispriced. A great example would be the garlic salt. Another MAJOR grievance (so much so that I know several people who REFUSE to patronize Penzeys) is Bill Penzeys need to use a spice catalog as a forum for his whack political views. Enough already! While on occasion I may want to hear about the good old days, I have NO interest whatsoever in hearing about your misconstrued political views!!! Stick to peddling your spices and the world will be a happier place! read more

I lived in Brookfield my whole childhood and had never even as much as heard of Penzey's. I suppose that says something about how much food was valued in our house, but after receiving a fun wedding spice pack from a friend a few years ago, I headed over to check their flagship retail store out. First of all I have to comment on the strange industrial park location of the store, but consdering they process and sell spices there, it makes a little more sense. Nonetheless you will probably think you are lost on your way up the wierd hill off Bluemound Road. Once inside, the store is a homey place where you can wander through the crafty displays, smell samples of all the spices, read descriptions, histories and even serving suggestions for each spice. They have a great variety, as Maiko said, and the prices are very reasonable. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and you can even look out over some of their processing facility. I look forward to getting it every month - yes, there is a cheesy editor's note from the owner, but I think it's great. This is Wisconsin, we appreciate a little fake personal attention and midwestern charm here. I agree their food photography less than stellar, but for me that adds something of a local charm element. It's not totally polished and sophisticated, and that's okay with me. The long and short of it is, these spices are better than what you will get at the grocery store, they are often less expensive, and you can even learn something shopping there. They value a good meal and seem to genuinely value their customers. If you like cooking, you will like Penzeys. read more

Hmmm... what can I say about Penzey's?! I admire their vast selection of FRESH herbs and spices. I like my food well seasoned, not necessarily "spicy", because flavor is more important than "heat". Rarely am I unable to find what I'm seeking or, at least, something comparable. This day I was out of luck! I've bought this product at Penzey's before... it's a mix of crushed sun dried tomato and other spices. It works beautifully in all types of Latino inspired dishes. I asked a crew member who was working the floor if she was familiar with it and where it might be. She was very friendly but I got the impression she wasn't going to put any effort into helping me. First she said she'd never heard of it. Next she tells me they've never carried anything like that. Then she tells me it's discontinued. Now, if she'd walked away from me and asked someone, or maybe checked the computer, I'd have been more satisfied with my service. The other problem with this location is that it's in an industrial park and is hard to locate. There are no obvious directional signs nor an easily visible marquee indicating a retail establishment. However, when you do find it there is an ample parking lot... but watch out for herds of wild turkeys casually strolling amongst the parked vehicles! No joke... I just wasn't fast enough to get a picture!! Back to my tomato spice for a moment, I went back to my car and went, via my phone, to the website where I easily located it and ordered it. Here's the downside... I needed it today! read more

Penzeys Spices - Spicing things up! - Herbs & Spices Near Me - Brookfield, Wisconsin

Been hitting up Penzey's for my spices for many many years at the various locations the store has been housed at in Brookfield, as well as locations in the LA area. Shopping here is overall a really cool experience for those who appreciate great spices and herbs. They pretty much have jars of every spice they sell, so that you can smell them before purchasing. Some of my favorites are the curries, vanilla bean and the various types of peppercorns. Definitely grab recipe cards they have up around the store. I've tried several, and all have been fantastic. Many of the recipes were submitted by customers! Prices are on par with the grocery store, but Penzey's quality trumps anything you can find in your grocer's aisle. Like what many other Yelpers have stated, their spices will give your food much bolder flavor and taste better! read more

Great store and I'm glad they opened a store near me in the Bay Area. Fantastic selection of spices from everywhere. I like the fact that there are samples that you can smell. I purchased the Vietnamese Cinnamon, the Green Goddess Dressing mix and the Bavarian Seasoning all were fresh and first rate. Well versed and friendly staff, nicely merchandised and the prices very reasonable in comparison to Safeway and Cost Plus. I am a definite fan. For me it's easier and cheaper just to buy from their mail order than to drive out to the Peninsula from the East Bay Contra Costa but if I ever get out to Redwood City I'll definitely check them out. read more

Great products. Respectable politics. I love the variety. Was able to find spice mixes that I was not able to easily find elsewhere.

There are no better spice companies out there than Penzey's. Their offerings are always fresh, affordable, and well-packaged (I buy mail-order from them). A plus is how they feel about Trump. read more

Brookfield location has very friendly, helpful employees! I love all their spices, herbs and extracts.....their spice blends are great also! I don't shop at Penzeys because of any one's political perspectives....I shop because they have the best, freshest products. Since Penzey's hasn't opened a store in California (I don't know why they wouldn't come to a big food city like SF), I shop via their mailorder catalog/website. Penzey's sells spices--hundreds of different kinds--and spice blends, both whole and ground. You can get as little as a 1/4 cup in a small plastic jar, or a pound in a resealable plastic bag. Their catalog is thorough in describing the spices, where they originate, and for what cuisines it's used. For those who are into authentic recreations of various cuisines such as Mexican, Persian, Indian etc., this is a great resource. Their website isn't very easy to navigate, so I suggest you request a free print catalog. I've come to get most of my spices from them because the quality of the product is excellent and their prices are really good. For example, the supermarket charges $3-5 for a jar of thyme but at Penzey's it's $2.29. Some exotic spices like vanilla beans fluctuate in price according to what the market dictates, but I know that Penzey's is not gouging people like the robber oil barons. The opening rant to each catalog by Mr. Penzey can be cloying and touchy-feely in a simplistic, aw-shucks way. Sometimes, that's nice but sometimes I feel like I don't really need rocking chair philosophy from a spice company. They just launched a food magazine (Penzey's One) that is truly atrocious looking. It's like they've never heard of food styling or looked at current food magazines, and everything seems to be awash in yellow and earthtones like it's from the 70s. Guh. The recipes--interspersed between stories of couples who adopt children from developing countries (the homely, midwestern Brangelinas, I guess) and a suppposed super-cook whose repretoire never progressed since the 1950s--can include such clunkers like saltines sprinkled with chocolate chips tossed into the oven to instant ramen with spices and hot sauce. It's a shame because I think there are a lot of customers who are sophisticated cooks and/or people from other countries who could probably contribute a lot of great recipes using the spices sold through Penzey's. Oh well, just ignore the constant plugging of the magazine in the Penzey's catalog and you serious home chefs will find a great resource. read more

I just think this place is grossly over rated! The staff in the stores is not friendly or helpful and I think their spices are overpriced. I prefer the spice house on old world 3rd street downtown. I also get the penzys catalog and I think the owner in his letters at the beginning is preachy and condescending, it's just something about the way he writes that makes me feel like he's talking to a two year old. At any rate I'm just not impressed with the stores or the company. read more

I've been using Penzey's Spices for the last 10 years and ordering it online has always been easy even though their website severely needs improvement as far as navigating. Their spices are always fresh, plentiful, and better than any store brand with the exception of their onion products which cakes up in the jar when stored for a few days without opening. So I wouldn't buy any of their onion powders. The prices of their spices are fairly reasonable and their shipping costs are average. It'll take ten days for the product to reach your door if you're in California, however. As far as their customer service? Well, this is where Penzey's fails miserably. In order to get customer service to respond to an inquiry, you must threaten them that you'll send a letter to Bill, the owner, to get the problem resolved. In this case, Customer Service will respond immediately. Overall, Penzey's is still okay. read more

Penzey's spices locations form a chain of delicious taste jewels scattered around our community. One's first experience upon entry is to be enveloped by all sorts of comforting and delectable aromas. Immediate confirmation that we are free of COVID's effects. Each location is staffed by friendly, helpful and knowledgeable employees. Someone quickly greets each customer, offers assistance and then gives one space. No hovering. Have questions about cooking or baking? There will be someone on staff who is an avid cook and/or baker and who is happy to share his/her cooking tips and tasty spice recommendations. And management cares about people and social responsibility. A not-so-small business that still feels like your local small business store. I have always found their spices to be of the finest quality and their prices fair. But their sales prices are incredible, making it easy to make up customized gifts for friends and family. Get on their e-mail list for their flash sale offerings! Penzey's has been and continues to be a very happy find and shopping experience. read more
