This was unexpected and the anti-conservative hate speech on the back of the packet is highly upsetting/offensive. Asked customer service if I could return for a full refund and was told "the socio-political messaging on certain products and our website is a core part of our business" and that I had to eat the return shipping cost. Highly disappointed that Penzey's refused to do the right thing in this situation, and would rather lose a long time fan of your spices over the owner's personal socio-political beliefs - which have no place in a business model. As a customer I do not force my beliefs on you as a business owner, and I expect the same in return.

Between the winding driveway and the old, abandoned guard shack it feels like a giant trap until you park and enter the store to confirm it is in fact a spice store. Outside of that, staff was pleasant enough but not particularly interested in asking if you need any help. Since I had a general idea of what I wanted, I didn't let that bother me too much and found some small gift sets for my employees to serve as part of their Christmas gifts, though I do wonder how many other people just leave and end up at the mall instead? In the past they often had little deals or bonus items while you were checking out, but that didn't seem to be the case this time--inflation must have gotten them, too!

The person working on this particular Saturday afternoon (April 4th 2026) was so helpful as they made helpful recommendations while sharing about their faves. No pressure, just like shopping with a fun friend! I love that the store has tester samples that enable shoppers to get a vibe for the mixtures of seasonings via a sniff. I loved that they had some sale items ($1/small jar) because it enables one to test it out and maybe head back to get a larger size if they wanted to make the spice a kitchen staple. Even when not on sale for $1, the small sizes available are perfect for testing it out in the kitchen. The layout of the store is neat, with everything well-organized. This is a very fun shop to browse while adding to a spice collection.

I'm not sure I understand how everything is organized there, but they did have everything we wanted in stock. The person working wasn't particularly friendly or unfriendly, she was just there. The sales are always good. Personally, I respect and appreciate their political and ethical stance. The biggest downfall to this location is the lack of parking. If only they had a lot... Downtown Milwaukee street parking is such a crapshoot on any day.

I sometimes buy their gift boxes for family because I want them to love Penzys spices too! Prices are reasonable and the quality is impeccable. The potency lasts much longer than any store brand or the famous red-capped spice company. Additionally, Penzys has many whole spices which last even longer as I can grind up only what I need. They also sell jars for storing spices, cookbooks, etc. I've been to other locations, but the 74th St location is my closest shop. I can't even remember when they moved in but it's always been well maintained and well stocked. Herbs and spices up front, baking goodies in the back. I love the little kitchen nook that baking items are displayed on, reminds me of my grandmas kitchen. They are staffed by friendly and helpful employees who love cooking and baking as much as everyone else. Don't hesitate to ask questions or for suggestions. Penzys also has sales a couple of times per year. Sometimes it's free items with a specific purchase amount, sometimes a discount.

I stopped in at Penzeys looking for saffron and left learning so much more than I expected. The…read moremoment you walk in, you're greeted by the smell of spices, and it's hard not to spend a little extra time browsing. They have such a great selection that it almost feels like a candy store for anyone who loves to cook. The two ladies working were incredibly helpful and took the time to explain the differences between the two saffron varieties they carried. They had a Spanish saffron and a newer Afghan saffron that the owner had recently brought into the store. They described the Spanish saffron as having a sweeter, more floral flavor with a lighter aroma, while the Afghan saffron was bolder, earthier, and much more aromatic. I was specifically looking for saffron to make tea as part of my overall wellness routine, and after talking through what I was hoping for, we decided the Afghan saffron was the better fit. I've been really enjoying it. You only need about four to seven strands steeped in hot water, and it slowly turns the tea into a beautiful golden yellow color. The flavor is subtle and smooth without being overwhelming, making it a relaxing drink to sip in the evening. What stood out most wasn't just the quality of the products, but the customer service. They genuinely took the time to answer my questions, share their own opinions, and help me choose what fit my needs instead of simply pointing to me toward a shelf. I'll definitely be back to explore more of their spices. If you've never been to Penzeys before, it's absolutely worth stopping in. Even if you only need one ingredient, you'll probably leave with a few new ideas and a little more knowledge than when you walked in.
