They often have specials significantly discounted to encourage experimentation. We also use their trial packets for a small amount of a new spice. Went to Penzey's spices today with my son. Went to see what else they had after my son bought me 6 salt free spice combos for my birthday. I am on a low salt diet. They have tons of no salt options both individual spices and combos. Definitely the place to go. They had containers of each spice you could sniff so you could tell if you would like that particular spice or blend. Wonderfully arranged inside. The ladies staffing the store were extremely helpful and pleasant. Had quite a variety of spices, hot chocolate mixes, some extracts and unusual spices. I cook a variety of ethnic food and have a cupboard full of exotic spices. I was able to purchase sumac for Persian food, lemongrass for Asian food, and also five spice blend. Every time I place a delivery order it turns into such a debacle. Navigating the website is horrible, especially if you have a cell phone only. Then they have things that are named the same but are different. How is that OK and then to do a return they want you to mail it back instead of just bringing it to a store to exchange it. Makes me not want to shop here. I used to shop at the Spice merchant, I really miss them. If they hadn't closed down, I would've never stepped foot into Penzey's. Offers more sections than the Charlotte location. 3. Has happier employees and that's saying a lot because of all the locations I have visited this is the perky one 4. Won't harass you to pull up a coupon when they know of said coupon floating about. 5. Beats the Durham location for parking and employee joy and floor plan layout. "the Spice House" has the BEST spices! They sell flatpacks that ship for free which is great if you want to try a new spice. They also have commercials that celebrate there professional chefs spices they've added to there spice line. No political commentary and great sales. I've been trying to get the Rojo seasoning for over a month now. When I called around to the stores a few weeks ago I was told just took the Rojo off the shelves because they expire in MAY! Seriously?? I would have used 3 bottles by the time they expire in May, do these just go to waste? 4 weeks later and none of the stores have Rojo. We won't be supporting Penzeys anymore knowing they take products off their shelves 4 months before they expire. What a waste! read more

My go to local source for spices As a cooking enthusiast, I'm thrilled to have a Penzey's location on the Near West side of Madison. I almost exclusively rely on their products for dried spices and seasonings. Other than some eclectic Asian spices, I can pretty much find whatever I need there. While things are sorted by alphabetical order, they do have separate sections for things like baking ingredients, chilis, pepper etc., which can be a little confusing when you get to the P section and can't find pepper because it is in a separate section. But it's not a large store, so eventually you'll figure it out. The staff is generally pretty laid back. They greet you when you enter, let you do your shopping and are available when you have a question. They sell spices in various quantities, but remember that spices have a shelf life of six to twelve months, so the half pound bag of cumin may seem like a bargain on a per ounce basis, but if you are going to use an ounce per year, stick with the smaller quantity. Even though Penzey's can be a little more expensive than your local supermarket, the quality level of the product is consistently high and because it is a specialty purveyor, the product on the shelf is fresher Some of the products I really love: * Pure vanilla extract - the gold standard for vanilla * Ground chipotle pepper - infuses a wonderful smoky flavor to my Mexican dishes * Extra Fancy Vietnamese Cassia Cinnamon - The cinnamon choice of America's Test Kitchen, 'nuf said * Dutch process high fat cocoa powder - make a chocolate cake with this stuff and you'll have the unconditional love of your kids, trust me * Whole Special Extra Bold Indian Black Peppercorns - the "Bold" is in the description for a reason, these peppercorns pack some serious heat. read more

Fresh spices and great spice blends. Fox Point is awesome on avocado toast, Sandwich Sprinkle for deli sandwiches, Bangkok is tasty in stir fries. I've contemplated writing this in the first place. While I'm a firm believer in our freedom of speech, I also believe that you reap what you sow. I loved going to your store. I would discover things I've never heard of and honestly the only place that I could find that sold genuine Mexican vanilla. I'm not exactly sure when your first politically charged email came out, but I do know how it made me feel. Why did someone who doesn't know me, hate me? Before anyone says, "Another conservative leaving a 1star review," I'm independent, Hispanic, and a woman. Honestly speaking I read each email several times over. Everything that you "claimed" the right/conservatives are, you failed to notice that it is exactly who you became. Intolerant, an unwillingness to listen, a lack of genuine understanding, and most of all a loss of empathy for your fellow American. I'm pretty sure there are other adjectives I could use, but why go there. Recently, I tried visiting my local store only to discover that it closed down, I can help but think that it was partly because of the divisiveness you have perpetuated. Your company preaches, "choose love." How is anything that you have written "choosing love?" If you truly believe in "choosing love" can I suggest instead of pointing fingers, try open arms. I usually go there when I get an unbeatable great coupon, usually for a free box of spices. If you sign up for emails, you'll get discounted offers with an often very lengthy, politically charged subject or a reminder to go out and vote from the owner, Bill. Articles and reviews of naysayers and yayers can be found online if you want to know what's going on. Me, I'm ok with it. He's entitled to an opinion and knows he either loses or gains followers for it. As for the store itself, most spices are arranged in alphabetical order and come in various quantities. There are staff around to help if needed-although I have heard from personal friends that some staff may very much be following too closely. There's not very much diversity in staff and the clientele is mostly middle-aged to seniors. I currently have a lazy-susan that is 60% filled with Penzey's spices. My go-to-spice at the moment is Fox Point, a delicious blend of shallots, onions, garlic, salt, which is great on hard-boiled eggs to using it as seasoning on meats. Is there a difference in other spices found in the grocery aisles, I am sure Penzey's quality is fresher, as I really like the smell and use of the Italian herbs mix. read more
