I love Penzys. 98% of the spices in my pantry are from Penzys, and have been for well over 20 years. I sometimes buy their gift boxes for family because I want them to love Penzys spices too! Prices are reasonable and the quality is impeccable. The potency lasts much longer than any store brand or the famous red-capped spice company. Additionally, Penzys has many whole spices which last even longer as I can grind up only what I need. They also sell jars for storing spices, cookbooks, etc. I've been to other locations, but the 74th St location is my closest shop. I can't even remember when they moved in but it's always been well maintained and well stocked. Herbs and spices up front, baking goodies in the back. I love the little kitchen nook that baking items are displayed on, reminds me of my grandmas kitchen. They are staffed by friendly and helpful employees who love cooking and baking as much as everyone else. Don't hesitate to ask questions or for suggestions. I had the best experience picking up spices here! Once home, I put them to the test, making shrimp tacos and chicken tacos--both turned out *fantastic*. I also grabbed other seasonings that we'll be using for future meals, and I can't wait to experiment more! As someone with **celiac disease**, I was thrilled to find out that these seasonings are **completely gluten-free**. The entire factory is celiac-safe, even though there's no GF logo on the packaging. I'm *very, very, very* sensitive, and I can confidently say I had no symptoms whatsoever. The quality of spices are Penzeys are better than any other spice store or grocery. They have not just 5 different types of cinnamon, they stock real Sri Lankan cinnamon. Definitely my favorite place to get spices in Milwaukee! From the moment I step in the door, the (now) familiar scent of all the fabulous spices hit my nose. The coupons/ discounts bring me in more often than I probably need but the quality of the spices are far superior than any you'll buy at the grocery store. These are the spices you want to use when you want to have flavor and WOW people with your culinary creations. The spices are fresh and have full flavor so you won't need to add extra "just in case" because these will be tasted. You will find everything from pepper to garlic to vanilla to their own spice blends. The spices also make for great gifts with their boxed sets (from small to the larger crates), which include stickers, pins, towels, or recipe cards, depending on which box you choose. The staff here are also very helpful and can steer you in the right direction or help you with ideas how you can use some of the spices. The smaller jars near each of the spices allow you to smell them before you buy and usually you can buy in various quantities, depending on your needs (1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, etc.). I try to buy the bagged spices so I can utilize the nice jars I've kept from used up spices. There is even a small play area for children to color because you may end up browsing the store longer than you originally intended with the extensive amount of spices you'll find here. The hours are slightly shorter than the surrounding stores so be sure to check the hours before heading out. Once you get into Penzey's though, I promise those spices you find at the grocery store will seem so bland to you that you'll wonder why you didn't start buying Penzey's sooner! read more

About a year ago, I saw an online a from Penzey's. Although I've never bought spices online, their product descriptions were intriguing. I ordered some, and found them much fresher and tastier than my supermarket purchases. A feature I love is the small envelopes at reasonable prices so you can experiment without wasting money on a whole jar. Penzeys is the best! I have been going to them for a very long time. The Greenfield location is very nice. The staff are helpful and the location is laid out very nicely. There is plenty of parking. The quality is wonderful! I love some of their specialty blends like Justice, Taco, Chili, Fox Point Seasoning, Sunny Paris and Sunny Spain are great blends to use in a variety of dishes. I could go on for days talking about how great they are but you should stop by and see for yourself! They have salt from around the world. Their pepper is great too. I love making homemade salsas with different chilis. I have used chilis from Turkey, Thailand as well as the Southwest. It makes for a great variety of spicing. While I'll admit to liking the Spice House better (I think they have more selection and more unusual things) I can't deny that Penzey's is pretty great. We stopped today for no particular reason and ended up with a few jars of blends (frozen pizza spice, sunny Paris, etc). I like that Penzey's has pretty much any herb and spice on its own, but also that there are tons of blends to be used as rubs, marinades or bases for dips. Everything comes in multiple sizes, prices are generally less than the crappy grocery store brands and it's definitely fresher. Everything has tester containers so you can smell away and find your perfect blend. The real bonuses come with joining their email list - today, we got 2 free jars of blends, one of which we had planned to buy anyway. Basically we spent $11, and got $11 in free stuff. Two thumbs up! Staff is pleasant and knowledgeable - if you need help, they're there. If not, they're happy to let you explore. read more

I was quite surprised that pricing was as low as it was being a retail location in a mall! I was first introduced to Penzey's by a good friend of mine. It's easy to see why they are so popular. They have an amazing variety of spices to choose from. Whatever it is that you're looking for, chances are, you will find it at Penzey's. The spices are of very good quality and taste. I have amassed quite a collection over the last year or so. As a matter of fact, I just went there recently to redeem my coupon for a free jar of their roasted garlic seasoning. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the spices. Although I miss going inside and enjoying the delicious smells of all the spices, I get why they are only doing pick up service. I like buying spices in quantities that I will use in about 6 months, so I appreciate the small size option. Considering that the spices still come in glass bottles I feel I'm getting better quality and fresher spices than I ever would at a grocery store. The customer service is excellent; you just order online and scheduling pickup is very easy. I am very loyal to my Penny's! read more

Need any type of spice? Chances are they have it. You can smell a variety of different spice blends throughout the store. Three to four variations of each spice are available such as Vietnamese cinnamon or their 3000 chili blend named for the level of heat. I ended up with a bag full of spices for under $20. The staff was friendly and helpful. read more

This place is pretty good. We tend to go here for certain spice blends, especially the Sunny Paris which my wife adds to potatoes fried in a little bit of olive oil. It really adds to the taste. As far as the regular spices go, I really can't tell you. I may not have the most educated palate, but I really can't taste or smell the difference between these spices and other spices from grocery stores. Stick to the spice blends, that's where it's at. This place is a real life saver at Christmas. All those people that you have no idea what to get for them, most of them cook so the spice gift sets make sense and they won't set you back too much. It is November 10, 2018 and I just left the Penzy's in Greenfield. I just had one of those rare experiences in life where you are reminded that is a ocassionally negative and frustrating world there are lots of people who are incredibly nice. I went In to get the Chicken soup spice mix, highly recommended, I am not a social butterfly and it had been a stressful and sad day as I was driving home from the funeral of much loved family member. I could not find what I was looking for and approached one of the store employees who was organizing and restocking. She helped me find what I was looking for, asked if she could take it to the counter so I didn't have to carry them around and over the next 15 minutes the three delightful and kind ladies working this evening were as kind and charming and helpful a trio as I have ever experienced in a retail setting. They answered my questions, directed me to where I could find what I was looking for, carefully wrapped and packaged up my purchase so it was ready to go when I was done, checked me out (and I did the more complicated than normal part cash part charge to hide a Christmas gift purchase for my wife from the credit card bill). They even threw in free samples. I left feeling vastly better than when I entered, I don't know if I have ever had that happen simply because I went to a store before. Penzy's is great, they sell high quality spices, Their mailer is something I enjoy greatly; full of taxonomy and recipes. I have learned about spices I would never have tried otherwise. Beyond that the caliber of people this particular store has hired as staff members is truly exemplary. On the off chance someone from that store reads this please pass my thanks on the the fine folks I met this evening, they may not know it but they really did a kind thing for me today just by being themselves. I liked Penzy's before but this experience makes my thoughts about the company something well beyond just liking them. I owe you one. read more

They have numerous locations in the Milwaukee area. I go to this one the most though. Make sure you get on their mailing list because their catalog always has fantastic recipes and quite often there's a coupon. I don't want to bore you and list all their spices that are currently in my cabinet. Let's just say you can't go wrong. They can help your cooking go from average to fantastic with minimal effort on your part. Ozark is great for chicken and fish. The pasta sprinkle sets my pasta salad apart from all the others. I promised I won't go on too much about them so I will stop. Go here. Buy local. Find pretty much any spice your heart desires. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Lot's of spices in nice jars. There are catalogues where you can order for delivery. The catalogues have recipes so you don't have to use the spices from this shop. I bought a friend a 4 spice grill gift box for $15.95, but found if I got the spices individually and bought a box it would have been cheaper. No biggie. I'm excited to try out my ancho chili spice, will be great in chili. read more

If I am going to a town with a Penzey's, I stop. There spices are great! I have never been disappointed with anything that I have bought. I especially like Taste of Mural, Sunny Paris, Breakfast Sausage Seasoning (I use it with ground turkey), Vietnamese Extra Fancy Cinnamon and the chicken soup base. If you sign up to receive their catalog, sometimes they include a coupon to receive a free spice. Plus their catalog contains recipes and they publish their own cooking magazine. In the store they have clear jars of each spice so you can see and smell the spices. I always go to the cinnamon. read more

Whatever the weird family history between Penzey's and The Spice House, there's nevertheless a common thread of quality that exists between them, so much so that it's the difference between one and the other is quite imperceptible. The Spice House benefits from the quaint decor of its location on Old World Third, but Penzey's seems to have more convenient locations, which is why I've probably visited this location the most given it being in the Southridge area. Wherever you go, you're certainly going to end up with a much fresher and potent product than one you can find in the grocery store, and the difference will be obvious in your cooking. read more

Everything about Penzey's is amazing. Entering their retail stores is like walking into every good smelling childhood memory from your grandmother's house (as long as she was a good cook). The atmosphere is comfortable and warm, things are displayed well and easy to find, and there is a jar available for every single spice, to smell or even take a tiny taste. The employees don't just stand around either- they know the spices, and they know cooking. I've been to a few locations and talked to a few different people, and they have all had very useful advice that proved true in the kitchen. Penzey's is awesome! They have herbs and spices galore, as well as their signature blends and gift items. These are quality spices -- the stuff that elevates your cooking and baking. My personal recommendations: if you like hot, get the Berbere blend. It's great in hummus and other dips, add it to soups, stews, and casseroles, or use it as part of a rub. (I like it in mac and cheese, too!) Their Forward blend is not hot, but it is also a very good all-purpose seasoning. I recommend their curries, cinnamon, black pepper, etc., etc. My biggest tip is to tell you to make sure you sign up online to be on their mailing list, because Penzey's is VERY generous to their customers (and to the community). If you sign up online, you get e-mail coupons and offers, as well as their catalog mailed to your house. The catalog is filled with descriptions of all their spices, as well as stories, recipes, and other coupons or special offers. I LOVE Penzey's! The aroma when you walk in the door is outstanding. My cabinet's have nothing but Penzey labeled spices in them. The employees are always very friendly and will answer any questions you have. I took my Mom there for her first visit and when I told them she was a Penzey virgin the woman gave a bottle of her favorite blend for free to try. Mom is hooked now as well. Love the catalog, though I do not shop from it I have made many recipes from it and of course love the free gift coupons.
