Really poor experience. After a long day driving, we chose this place because it had ok reviews and was close to our hotel. Alas- it was one of the worst eating experiences on our 2 week road trip. Biggest problem- only one server for the entire place and she had to do it all except for actually running the grill. She did try, but could not keep up with a full house on a Friday night for dinner. Took her 10 minutes just to bring menus, and at least a half hour to get food to us. When food was brought out we had an item missing- a shake that was never made or brought to the table even 45 minutes after ordering it. The Philly cheese steak was cold and had clearly been made and stood for some time before being brought out. The BLT was cold, as was the chilli. The chicken on the chicken salad had also clearly sat for quite a while before being delivered to the table. Another big problem was cleanliness. The floor was dirty. The room had flies buzzing around. At one point the server dropped a tray of coffee mugs and clearly broke several. She didn't sweep them up. A few minutes later, a busser came out from the back and kicked a broken piece of cup along the floor. He just left it there rather than picking it up. It was still there in the middle of the floor when we left. They did remove the shake that never came and the 2 items that were cold and not eaten from the bill. Decided to stop in for a quick lunch. Definitely has Waffle House vibes as far as the menu and food. The food was mid and the service was also mid, not the best but not the worst. Definitely not very clean and very dated (not in a 50s diner way) but rather ripped taped up benches, worn and dirty way with flies around the food. read more

Took a trip. This was the first place for breakfast. Open 24/7. Older place. It was not very clean. The bathroom was enough for me to walk out but we stayed to see. The waitress was more concerned with her phone and a tip then customer service. The food was basic at most and cooked on a not so clean grill. I also found a hair at the bottom of my hash browns. To say the least, if I'm ever in N Platte again, this will not be a place I visit. It has potential to be great as I'm sure it once was. read more

Welp ! We tried to support local business. Only the waiter there to make excuse after excuse about it taking 40 MIN!!! And still no food was served. She lied to us twice and said our food was on the grill. Then when we said it's ok we would just like to pay for the 1 soda we drank less than half of and leave. This place has all "Classic American Diner" written all over it: The greasy food... the shiny, metallic trim... the snarky-yet-kind service... the dingy ceiling tiles... I could go on. We sat at the bar, which stares directly at the exposed kitchen and watched the cook do her thing from a proximity close enough to catch a whiff of the cigarette she had smoked on break. I had the rueben, which was solid. Greasy, of course. The fries that accompanied it were golden brown and had the perfect crunch to them. My friend had the chicken fried steak and he raved about the potatoes and white gravy. We were in a hurry, so two shakes to go (chocolate and strawberry) rounded out an excellent stop on our road trip across Nebraska. read more

Went to this Diner expecting an exceptional experience. But... it turned out to be exceptionally poor. First off, the floor was dirty, but we ignored that. When we looked for a table, they were all dirty with only one or two tables occupied. A waitress cleared a table for us and told us the menu was written on the wall. I think I've stopped here about four times now on my drives across the country because it's the only place open at night besides fast food. The service is never attentive. It's always like they pretend they don't see you for a while, then once they get around to acknowledging you exist, you get a water and have to wait a little longer to put in your food order. The food takes kind of long and then it's always a good enough greasy spoon level omelette. It hits the spot but it's nothing exceptional. It's a dated diner and they're always understaffed, so it feels kind of dirty. Usually at night one person does the cooking, serving, cashier, and cleaning so it makes sense. Penny's Diner serves its purpose and I keep coming back expecting nothing more or less than what I described above. read more

Worst experience ever! Stopped at Pennys Diner in North Platte, Nebraska for an early dinner. It had good reviews and looked cute on the website. This cute....rather large....(not trained) dog came in and sat at the booth next to us. Only one guy taking orders, making change, cooking the food and serving .. all without washing his hands in between! (Didn't notice until he started making ours) We both ordered club sandwiches, husband said no mayonnaise. Each tables' order were made one at a time (the grill was right near tables) when our food came my husband took a couple of bites and said, "I guess if you order with no mayonnaise, you don't get any lettuce either!!" I looked at my sandwich, and I had both lettuce and tomato! If you know my husband he's not gonna say anything so he just ate it. We laughed! But the worst part was the dog... Every time it shook its hair would float over onto our table and my husbands arm. It was horrible. Guess we won't be going back. Cute dog though! And I brought half of mine back and gave the meat to our dogs! Oh, and one more thing! They were talking to this dog like he was a child, the whole entire time rather loudly. Then they actually told the waitress who came walking through about 30 minutes into our meal that their dog was cleaning off the table for her so she wouldn't have to wipe it! How disgusting is that! Great food in classic old-school diner atmosphere; the service is good and food hot and fresh! Coffee is super aromatic and bold but not so strong it's bitter. They gave me actual cream but not sure they always have that. But I tasted coffee black first. My family had dozens of restaurants (Home Dairy Cafeteria's and Bakeries in PA, NY, MI, FL and Canada 1916-2002) for decades and I grew up helping my folks in a two restaurants and taverns they operated. We've gone here three times, and each time has gotten increasingly worse. We stopped in for a quick shake and hamburger, and quickly noticed how dirty the kitchen was. There was grime on the grill and ground, and it smelled overwhelmingly like something was burning. We had a shake that took almost 20 minutes to make, and was not mixed well. We were originally going to order hamburgers, but after seeing the state of the kitchen, we decided against. The WiFi was down and we had to pay in cash, which was a bit of an inconvenience. The servers were very apologetic about the time it took to make the shake, and overall pretty friendly. We wished it was the classic greasy spoon experience we wanted, but sadly, we won't come back. read more

Drinks: sub par, barely any ice in my cup, but the soda tasted fine. 6/10. (7/10 is my average fountain soda score) Service: They cook your food in the area where you eat- open concept kitchen which is cool if you have polite cooks. Nah, they were yelling at each other and were very loud. - our server barely talked to us and used non verbals to communicate half the time. I was served my dipping sauce with it spilling all over the side of the dish. EXTRA HAIR IN OUR FOOD TOO Not to mention they don't have clean bathrooms. We are on a road trip and saw this cute diner from the freeway. We were excited to try it for lunch. When we entered no one greeted us or made eye contact. After standing there for a while a server came to clear a dirty table for us. After sitting down we checked out the open kitchen. It was very dirty and there was only one cook. The atmosphere was dull and dreary. The two staff members looked unhappy and over whelmed and they had unkept appearances. We were given a ratty paper menu that was stapled together. Delicious old fashioned diner in an airstream looking building located right off the interstate in North Platte! It is a small space with limited tables, but it's worth the wait if there is one. I will say it's not the cleaned place I've ever been too but the food is hot & delicious. One of the best if not the best club sandwich I've had, I decided to get mine on rye (sourdough, white or wheat were my other options) and it was delicious, I added mustard to mine. Tator tots were great, and my husband loved his biscuits and gravy that came with 2 eggs and bacon. We also had the cheese sticks (no picture) but would definitely skip those. If you're looking for a diner in the heartland of America this is most definitely it. Don't let anything about this place fool you especially with how friendly the staff were in the us mellow diner. Their cooks are truly chefs in execution and delivering a flavorful final product. On top of that both the cooks and waitresses are full personality and some conversation (if they have a lull since they stay busy!) We had the omelette and cowboy chili burger. The omelette we choose was full of vegetables cooked to perfection and full of flavor. The burger was everything you're looking for especially since you know the beef used is the real deal being in Nebraska.
